Chapter One: In which Jared is forced to make a difficult choice. Chapter Two: In which Simon outdoes himself and finds an extraordinary new pet...then...Lost Chapter: In which Hogsqueal finds himself in a cage.
#1 New York Times bestselling author and illustrator, Tony DiTerlizzi, has been creating children’s books for twenty years. From fanciful picture books like The Broken Ornament and The Spider & The Fly (a Caldecott Honor book), to chapter books like Kenny and The Dragon and The Search for WondLa, DiTerlizzi imbues his stories with rich imagination. With Holly Black, he created the middle-grade series, The Spiderwick Chronicles, which has sold over 20 million copies, been adapted into a feature film, and translated in over thirty countries. He teamed up with Lucasfilm to retell the original Star Wars trilogy as a picture book and his collaboration with celebrated author Mo Willems created the bestseller The Story of Diva & Flea. The Norman Rockwell museum’s retrospective, “Never Abandon Imagination”, featured artwork from the beginning of DiTerlizzi’s career as a contributing artist for Dungeons & Dragons and broke attendance records. He has been featured in Time magazine, USA Today, CNN, PBS, NPR the BBC and The Today Show.
-Negative- 1)-The names of the characters were stupid (Flowerbutt, Hogsqueal, and Claw-Snotbelly.) 2)-There wasn't enough action at all. 3)-Could have been a bigger book. 4)-Needed more detail.
-Positive- 1) Looked like a cool book but it was very misleading.
Things get weirder and a helluva lot more dark for the Grace kids when Simon gets kidnapped by a pack of bloodthirsty goblins. One thing I really loved about this one is how disturbing the monster designs are. They look like something you would see in a 18+ dark fantasy manga, not a kid friendly adventure story. There were also scenes where the goblins cooked cats alive over a fire while making Simon watch as they planned to cook him alive next. Surprisingly brutal and scary for the age rating and I think I liked this one more than the first for that reason.
The stakes were higher and the monsters were impressive. The Grace kids seem to be growing closer to each other as they find themselves thrown into one nasty situation after the other. As Stranger Things would say, shared trauma brings people together.

What a horrible family. Not a single decent role model in the book. [return]The story line is a bit stale and cliched; I didn't care for these books at all.
I don't really like this book because I didn't think there was as much action as I thought there would be. I also didn't like the dialogue. 1 thing that I did like was the adventure.
Summary: This isn’t the first book of the Spiderwick Chronicles. I enjoyed the fact that the beginning few pages of the book are a map and a recap of the books that came before this book. In this book, James is rescuing his sibling Simon from a bunch of goblins that have him locked in a cage. He does this with the help of his sister Mallory and a hobgoblin named Hogsqueal. The three siblings end up getting away by tricking the goblins into being eaten by a troll. Then they end up back near their house where they help a griffin that is injured and keep a kitten. They get in trouble when they get back home with their mother because she’s been worried about them. There are illustrations in the book that really add to the story. Some of them adding expression through the scared or surprised look that is perfectly depicted on the children’s faces. I really liked the book. It’s a funny short read. That is perfect for introducing children the genre of Modern Fantasy.
Critique: Though it’s a short read and it’s expected to not take long to read. I felt like it was lacking important details. The pacing of the book was really fast which is great because they’re escaping but it could have been drawn out more to add more context and detail. I think that because this book is part of a series it's not as detailed as it otherwise would be. The fact that it's lacking those details makes it a short read but not as fun to read if it would have been if it was just it's own book and not part of a series.
Strengths and Weaknesses: The strength of this book it that it's a short and fun book to read. It's good for kids that don't like to read longer book and if they happen to like this book or any of the books in the series then it can lead them to read other similar books or work up to longer books. A weakness of this book is that if you read it out of context without reading the first two books first then you don't get all the information that you need to really connect with the characters of the book.
Use in Classroom: This book is perfect for a lesson on Modern Fantasy. It would be a good book to read aloud to the students and then pause periodically throughout the book to let them identify aspects of the book that are elements of Modern Fantasy. This will allow the students to identify elements of Modern Fantasy will also having fun listening to the adventures of three siblings that can now see things they couldn't before.
I do love the Spiderwick Chronicles, but it's been many years since I read the whole series and it was incredible to return to "The Seeing Stone" by reading these three books and it was interesting having the additional chapter at the end. This is the third book in the special editions of the second book in the series, "The Seeing Stone", where it follows on from the previous parts. The Grace kids befriend Hogsqueal and help a griffin.
I have a young cousin who likes reading, and she will summarize books for me as a type of conversation, and while delightful, her summaries are often so all-over-the-place that even if I've read the book I can't follow.
This book is a lot like one of her summaries. Kinda fun to watch, but not -exactly- a book.
"Great Escape," The Spiderwick Chronicles, #2 Part III" is a good story for children. This is an ongoing adventure series for young ones. The dialogue and characters are well presented. The illustrations are well done in all three parts of this book. Yes, I would recommend this series of books for children.
the refresher poem gave me no context i will have to read everyth again... but still enjoyed, flashback to younger days !! all a part of my childhood longing to move to the country... esp someplace marshy, with streams etc. to cross, forest to explore. well look at me now! Mallory Grace has my heart 5ever 🌹🫶
Love the characters, love the creatures, and love the world. I loved being back in this series. Didn't even know this short short story(?) existed before today.
I know it's just a short little exert with a "secret" chapter. But I do with we had a little more to sink our teeth into.
I picked this up at a salvation army store. I figured its a nice short story I can finish in a day (like while having a tag sale) and to keep up or help me catch up on the amount of books I wanted to read in the year!
This book is incredibly difficult to get a hold of ...I found a plot on a wiki page and I'm counting that as reading it. Lol I've looked everywhere for this book
I read "Great Escape," part of "The Spiderwick Chronicles" by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. I thought the book was pretty good. I liked the action in the book. A lot happened in a short period of time. They were being chased by goblins and the main characters led them right into a trap and a troll ate the goblins. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it was to short. I felt they could have put more information in the book or made it more detailed.
Jared, one of the main characters of the book, is basically the hero. He is the one who saves his brother from the goblins and comes up with the idea to lead the goblins to the troll. Simon, who is Jared's twin brother, is the one who is saved from the goblins. Mallory is the older sister to Jared and Simon. She is the sibling who likes to play things on the safe side. Hogsqueal is a hobgoblin, which I think means he is part goblin. I'm not sure they never explain that. Hogsqueal is the only reason the three siblings got away from the goblins. He was the distraction for them.
The setting of this book takes place in the wood, which is where all the mythical creatures lurk. The only way to see them is if they look through a magical stone or if they get hobgoblin spit in their eyes.
The theme of this book is that family looks out for family no matter what the cost may be. In the book Jared and Mallory put their lives on the line to save their brother, Simon, from the goblins that were going to eat him. Also, at the very end, they go back to save the other animals that the goblins had captured because Simon was going to do it with or without the help of his brother and sister. They also covered for each other when they finally got home and had to explain what had happened to their mother.
I would recommend this book to any gender of any age. It is a quick and easy book to read. I rate this book four out of five stars.
This book is short. Really short. It would be fun for a child to read. The characters are interesting and magical, the story is short and easy to follow, it contains a kitten.
But calling it a story is being kind. It's almost like a serial, that is, it's a very small section of a larger story (that probably isn't even that large to begin with). It's more like a scene.
At any rate, I don't want to pan the book too much because I am not a child, it's part of a bigger story, and children will likely find it fun and easy to follow.
In sprite of starting sort of in the middle of this series, I have enjoyed the first three books of the second series. I love the illustrations and like the three children's characters along with the fantastical circumstances they stumble into and around in. They behave believably and imperfectly- nice!
Also, the occasional feeling of dread is appropriate and the action described well. I'd recommend this book to children, definitely.
Great Escape was the final book that I've read in the Spiderwick Chronicles. I wished that the series would continue on forever but no. Everything was perfect; and by everything, i meant the characters and the plot.
