"Dance, warriors! Life gets no sweeter than this!"

Wild, reckless, Kahvi is a natural leader for the pugnacious Go-Backs, northern-dwelling elves who aided the Wolfriders in their quest for the Palace of the High Ones. On the surface, she's simply one in a long line of elfin chiefs who laugh at danger and whose lives are short and violent. But Kahvi's ancestry holds an amazing secret, one even she does not know.

As an added bonus, this volume also contains an extended tale of long-ago Wolfrider chief Two-Spear, whose madness nearly destroyed the tribe. What is the link between long-dead Two-Spear and Go-Back chieftess Kahvi?

I write. I teach. I teach writing. I write about teaching. I read about writing and write about reading and teach about both when not dealing with the paperwork being a high school educator demands in our current political clime. I'm National Board Certified in my discipline (English).

I've won awards, published constantly since 1989, and just wrapped up a two-year tenure as the editor and designer of Pine Whispers (the newsletter for the North Carolina Poetry Society).

I make time for reflection, which comes in handy with all of the hats I wear. I also buy, sell and collect pop culture items ... from books and comics, to lunch boxes and action figures.

And if you've read this far, please accept my humble thanks.

Read for my Great ElfQuest Read of 2025, on ElfQuest.com (because I'm not sure I have all the issues in physical form).

I read Two-Spear first, showing how the tribe split between Two-Spear and his sister, Huntress Skyfire. In general I liked this story, but sometimes there were plot points that weren't very clear. The artwork is black and white and the lines are rougher more like a pencil sketch, which I liked. I think the art is by the same person who was doing New Blood, and I thought this looked much, much better.

As for the Kahvi storyline, I may have read this many years ago, but I didn't remember it at all. I'd completely forgotten Kahvi's origins. This series also takes some unfortunate turns like spending two pages making Tyldak look like an idiot, and also having Kahvi go on a ridiculous quest to make a baby with Cutter - apparently she thinks he will just have no problem with that. I liked the part with the trolls, actually.

Sometimes the art made it tough to tell who a certain character was and the story didn't explain it either - so I'm still confused who took Two-Spear's tribe back to the Cafe. Might have to do some googling to try and figure it out.

Anyway, it's a good pair of stories with a lot of backstory/lore that's definitely worth it.

I had to read this on Elfquest.com because apparently people are stealing this book from libraries.

This contains the Kahvi miniseries and the Two-Spear miniseries.

In the Two-Spear series we see Two-Spear as one of those toxic males who disappears for long stretches at a time but then insists that he's in charge when he shows up. He's obsessed with killing Humans after the events in Blood of Ten Chiefs, and has no interest in the cultivation that the elves are starting to develop. He's clearly a douche, but not enough time is spent developing the character of Skyfire, his sister, who challenges him for leadership.

In the Khavi miniseries, set while Cutter's Wolfriders are asleep, Kahvi decides the Go-Backs need a new purpose. She travels to Blue Mountain and finds the Great Egg, which reveals secrets of her origin and the origin of the Go-Backs. This knowledge just seems to make Kahvi more restless.

The Kahvi series felt like a monthly series which could easily have gone longer. The Two-Spear series had a definite end goal, which we knew going in because of other Elfquest books, but the ending wasn't as strong as it could have been.

The next series that I've read online in the ElfQuest archives featured Kahvi, the Chieftess of the Go-Backs. I had always admired her courage and quarrelsome nature. She's reckless and a force of nature. To learn her back story and ancestry is just a little bonus nugget.

I also read the tale of Two-Spear, and how he divided the wolf rider tribe. This was in the online archive as well, but it appears that it is included in Kahvi's graphic novel. It was done completely as pencil sketches, which was interesting. I found it compelling, however, and it added to the primal feel of the early wolf riders.

Khavi wants to make the Go Back tribe rise up, become strong again, and goes on a journey. At the ruins of Blue Mountain, she not only discovers an elf long thought dead, but her own true history. And is it a doozy!

it's harder to keep track of the story line in this one, but it does fill in some of the gaps..
