I love supernatural stories. I love supernatural love stories even more. However, I read several of these books back to back, and they all seemed so... similar. All the women are the same: tiny, tapering waist, pale. Oh so fragile in some way. The men are all the same: Large frames, large penises, broody.
I completely understand if the Carpathians are characterized in such a way. But every single female who they choose look and sound the same. The only difference between each book, is that each person has a different hair and eye color. The rest remains the same.
I would love it if there was some sort of variation. I know it's just me, because I know many people who raved about this series. But in reading them back to back, as a queer, plump, non-white, non-male person, I found I couldn't relate to any of the women. I appreciated that the women were in some way different from regular humans, but I find that there is always that idea that the women must be protected, that they're always weaker (maybe its because of how skinny and tiny they are...who knows?) than the hulking, powerful Carpathian males.
I was told by my friend, who had recommended the series a long time ago to me, that in one book, one of the mates (who I guess is the protagonist of that book) is also a shifter. But in the end I, who like to read serials chronologically, was unable to even get that far (I think it was book 12?).
If you want to read a series which all feature the exact same metaphors and similes which describe sex and all that goes with it, a series which seems to feature the same personality with different hair and eye colors, but still heavily gendered, then this is the series for you. I also guess that all Carpathians are, by default, heterosexual, because by this point in Carpathian's history, a Carpathian woman is to be protected because of her ability to produce more Carpathian women, to make mates for the Carpathian men already in existence. Doesn't seem like much of a choice, and I'm not sure that any of the mates are given any, and if they are, they're somehow swayed by the entire thing. I know that I myself am blinded by my own subjectivity and ideas about reproduction and sexuality, but as the entire thing seems pretty one-sided, I think that at least this perspective is a refreshing one from the main, who adore the series.

This series is so freaking awesome! i love the spin this author gives on vampires and the Carpathian world is mystical and breath taking!
