As author Tahlula Rae has discovered; success is a double-edged sword. Leading a quiet and anonymous life, she isn’t prepared for the hateful backlash when her latest book hit the lists, propelling her into the limelight. No longer feeling safe in Denver, she takes her laptop and dog, Luke, and moves to the mountains around Durango, where her peaceful solitude is disrupted when a red-bearded man knocks on her door.
While one of the fire department’s finest, Evan Biel, is relatively content with his life, he can’t escape the sense something’s missing. When on fire-safety housecalls, he finds himself staring into a pair of soulful, copper-colored eyes sparking a deep interest. Discovering the striking woman may be in more trouble than he can handle, he tries—yet fails—to keep his distance.
When Tahlula offers San Antonio firefighters, Moose and Penelope Jacobs, temporary lodging, as they help fight seasonal wildfires, Evan’s relieved she’s no longer alone on the mountain. Yet when her troubles become outright threats on her life, his focus has to be keeping Tahlula safe.

Can you guys dial down the testosterone, please? I’m having an allergic reaction.
Sometimes I really detest the voice of reason.
As nice a package as you come in, it’s your indiscriminate kindness, your passion, your warm heart, and your beautiful soul that made me fall in love with you.
Stop making sense, you’re starting to annoy me.
My Review:
This was an active and entertaining yet easy to follow and engaging romantic suspense story with an interesting premise, likable and sweary characters, clever pets, intrigue, peril, humorous banter, a sweet and steamy new romance, scorched sheets, a radical fringe group, and fast-paced and eventful storylines. Insightfully and evocatively written in my favorite dual POV of a newly acquainted over-forty couple who felt interest, awareness, and unmistakable attraction at first glance. Pregnancy is one of my least favorite tropes but I’ll always make an exception for the crafty Freya Barker… unless she starts writing about pregnant zombies, which would be a definite no-go/hard limit.
I was so excited to get Evan's story. Poor guy got the shaft in Burning for Autumn. He not only didn't get the girl but, was also falsely accused of setting deadly fires. You could tell from his first introduction he was just a nice guy, and sadly nice guys don't always finish first.
As much as I loved Autumn in in that book, she wasn't right for Evan, but Tahlula was. Tahlula has had a pretty rough life. Even though she didn't know it, she needed a guy like Evan. One who would take care of her because he wanted to, not because she couldn't take care of herself.
Both Tahlula and Evan are in their very early 40's. It's so nice to see a mature couple find their happily ever after. Not that I have anything against books about 20 year olds, it's just nice to get a different change of pace.
I loved Tracking Tahlula and hope there are more Freya Barker and Susan Stroker pairings in the future. Both authors are queens at romantic suspense. They compliment each other very well.
TRACKING TAHLULA (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha Series, On Call #3) by Freya Barker is a GREAT romantic suspense addition to this series! Ms. Barker always gives me realistic characters that I would love to be friends with out of her books. This book can be read as a standalone, but there are several crossover characters from pervious books in this series and Susan Stoker’s Operation Alpha world.
Tahlula Rae is a successful romantic suspense author who is finding herself in a real-life suspense plot. As soon as she hit the NY Times bestseller list and had to do live publicity, she seems to be the target of a stalker for an unknown reason. After a break-in, she moves to Durango from Denver with her rescue dog, Luke to be closer to her brother and hopefully get away from any danger.
Evan Biel, Durango firefighter and paramedic is out making fire-safety house calls. As he rings the bell for a remote home in the hills, he is surprised by the exotic beauty with the soulful copper eyes who answers the door. Evan finds he cannot get the feisty, independent, pregnant woman off his mind.
As their relationship grows, Tahlula and Evan work to balance her independent streak vs. his protective nature. At the same time, the summer wildfire season threatens the city as the personal dangers to Tahlula increase. Can Evan and his friends keep Tahlula safe?
I always LOVE Ms. Barker’s characters! They are mature, realistic, smart and likable. The romantic suspense plots keep you turning the pages, but it is always the characters that make Ms. Barker’s books a “must buy” for me. I am happy when I find an author who writes about older characters finding their HEAs and Ms. Barker does it so well.
I recommend this romantic suspense and the whole series for great characters and stories. I highly recommend Freya Barker for realistic mature HEAs.
Holy heck, I love Evan!!! I swear this author knows exactly what I want in a hero and gives it to me…every…single…time.
When Tahlula’s career takes off in a way she never expected, or wanted, she moves to a remote mountain home in Durango. Not long afterwards, she receives a visit from Evan, one of the local fireman and a man she feels an instant attraction to. But when her past comes calling, her new life is turned upside down.
Tahlula is fiercely independent. She has some pretty quick come backs for not only her brother who is overly protective but for Evan who is more so. I loved her spark and humor as well as her sweet spirit. The fact that she had lived her life somewhat isolated for so long made watching her blossom under not only Evan’s care, but that of her new community, a beautiful thing.
I loved everything about Evan. He checked every single box I have for my heroes. He was instantly attracted to Tahlula and felt protective of her despite thinking she belonged to another man. His care and concern for her stole my heart, repeatedly. My gosh, this man had me swooning at some of his small actions. From the very beginning his heart was involved and his intensity only grew as their relationship did.
This couple was freaking amazing together. There was no real relationship angst and watching them fall in love was wonderful. The fact that it all happens while they are thrown into some serious danger and drama from outside sources only added to my enjoyment. The heroine has a bit of a surprise that only added to the beauty of this story. And holy heck did Evan prove he was everything she would ever need.
This starts off fast and never slows down. Everything about it feels authentic, with only one moment that I had to side eye the heroine. Otherwise, I was so engulfed in this story, once I started I could not stop. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a mature couple, a completely committed from the first moment hero, a strong heroine, amazing secondary characters, and some danger to round it all out.
Like I usually say after reading a new Freya Barker book; this one is my new favorite. This book is what I wanted to read in a while. Different and something I wanted to read about. It’s so good. I couldn’t put it down. The chemistry between Tahlula Rae and Evan Biel is hot since the first chapter. Love how strong and independent Tahlula is and every woman needs a Evan in their lives. The plot is amazing. Loved it. And so awesomely written. Had me hooked since the first chapter. Freya Barker writes characters that I can relate to. And with a bonus of delicious protective alpha males and with a suspense that I love in my books. Awesome to see characters of Susan Stoker and familiar characters of Freya Barker that I love so much. And that last sentence at the end? The hint about the next characters? Hell to the freaking yes!!!! 😁
Another great read by one of my go-to authors! Evan and Tahlula’s story had all the makings of what I love in her books; great characters, intense chemistry, a great suspense filled storyline and amazing secondary characters. In Tracking Tahlula we get Evan Biel’s story, we first hear about him in Burning for Autumn and things did not go so well for him so I was ecstatic to see him get his happily ever after. Tahlula Rae is a strong, independent and now a best selling author, but with this great accomplishment she is now getting unexpected backlash from her latest book. She decides to relocate and hide out near her half-brother in Colorado. Unfortunately her troubles follow her when she finally started to feel safe.
The attraction between Evan and Tahlula is pretty much there from their first meet, but misunderstandings and some personal hang ups do keep them apart in the beginning. But circumstances keeps putting them in each other’s paths. And once Evan finds Tahlula is in danger, he will stop at nothing to keep her safe.
Overall, I loved this story and seeing familiar faces is always a treat. I am now looking forward to the next in this series and any others by this author.
I loved everything about this story! The characters, the storyline the heat factor! Yes please and thank you. This author has a brilliant way of taking ordinary folks and making them into extraordinary characters. Evan and Tahlula’s story was so juicy and entertaining. The plot so genuine and relatable! Another must read from an author that has become an automatic 1-click worthy! By the way, even though it’s part of a series it can certainly be read and enjoyed as a standalone. 4.5 stars!
I've been waiting for Evan's story since he was first introduced in Burning for Autumn. He not only didn't get the girl he thought he wanted, but he was under suspicion of arson, which is a tough row when you're a firefighter. In Tracking Tahlula Evan comes into his own and not only finds the woman of his dreams, he may just get the family too. I love Tahlula. She's fiercely independent, smart and sassy, and more than capable of making important decisions like becoming a single mother. A successful writer, who moved due to the racist threats happening around her in Denver, Tahlula buys a secluded mountain home. She's had a tough life, the only anchor in her life has been her brother, Trunk. When Evan appears out of the blue to do a fire safety check, and meets Tahlula, he is enchanted by her and their chemistry sparks to life, much to her brother's dismay. When a militant racist starts targeting Tahlula, all hell breaks loose. When wildfires threaten the area, out of state help arrives in the form of Susan Stoker's characters Moose and Penelope. There are so many layers to this book, it's like finding a treasure as each is revealed. As with all of Ms. Barker's books, her characters are mature and past the playing games stage of life. They know what they want and make no bones about going after the love of their life with full commitment. Her characters are realistic, with real jobs and problems. The banter between the characters adds humor and emotion to an already amazing story, and the intricacies of her suspense plots are superb. The perfection of description and emotion in her words is lyrical. She is a writer who who never fails to deliver a great story and keeps me wanting more.
After being in a bit of a reading funk for the past few weeks, Tracking Tahlula was exactly what I needed!
Evan Biel is a bearded ginger hottie firefighter who is a genuinely good guy but who also has enough of a take charge attitude to ensure that he won't be one of those nice guys who finish last. He still feels the sting of being suspected in a string of fires by people he respected, but he is starting to move beyond it.
Tahlula is a fiercely private and independent woman who has been taking care of herself since her mom died when Lula was just fifteen. Her older half brother Trunk stepped in to help, and he is both the only family she has and one of very few people she trusts. She never expected to be thrust into the public eye when she wrote a bestseller but her publisher forced her to reveal her identity thanks to a clause in her contract. When nasty emails and threats started to roll into her social media accounts, Tahlula had enough and decided to escape to the Colorado mountains to be near Trunk.
Sparks fly the first time Evan and Lula meet but her interfering and overprotective brother runs him off in short order. The attraction definitely simmers and quickly reaches a boiling point when they are reminded life is too short to waste. It's not long before they realize danger seems to have followed her to Durango though, and Evan has to split his focus between keeping her safe and fighting the relentless wildfires that keep popping up all around the area. Now with multiple lives on the line, they have more incentive than they ever expected to fight to protect their future.
I really loved both these characters! Evan is that elusive man that knows how to pick his battles wisely, and while Tahlula can hold onto an argument, she doesn't take it to unreasonable lengths. The element of biracial romance and the ignorant reactions some people in this world have to it was well done in my opinion too. Love, family and friendship played an important role as Tahlula found the best parts of life thanks to her unexpected move.
I am going to be eagerly waiting to see Trunk and several members of Evan's crew find the partner that knocks them off their feet after the way they enjoyed poking at Evan, but in the meantime I am going to go back and savor this one a little more!
When it becomes apparent Evan's newest interest, Tahlula, has someone after her, his protective instincts are screaming at him. Can he protect this woman whom he's fallen so hard for?
Tracking Tahlula is a fast-paced, entertaining read. I loved both Tahlula and Evan - they're so great together. And I love that they're in their 40s. If you like your romantic suspense with fabulous characters and sizzling chemistry, I highly suggest you download a copy of Tracking Tahlula today!
Just finished Tracking Tahlula which is the 3rd book in this series. There is something about the series that completely encapsulates Freya's writing skills. It had me ensnared from the beginning. I absolutely loved Tahlula's independent, strong, sassy personality and Evan I had liked from the previous book but once I started reading his and Tahlula's story I loved him too.....I mean what's not to like, a hot, red haired firefighter with a heart of gold. (By the way I totally want to head to Durango now!!). It was no surprise that Tracking Tahlula had everything I've come to expect from Ms Barkers exceptional writing....but the thing that sets her as one of my go to authors is the fact she encompasses a myriad of unexpected too! The secondary characters become a significant part of wanting to keep reading too. The twists you don't see coming but flow so well, the feelings her characters convey across the page is fantastic.....I could go on and on. I literally can not wait to see which characters get their own story next in this series......but I also can't wait to revisit old friends too.
5 star Review Tracking Tahlula (Police & Fire: Operation Alpha) by Freya Barker
Freya Barker is a relatively new author to me. This is author Tahlula Rae and fireman Evan Biel’s story and it was one that captivated me from the first to the last chapter.
Seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Denver, and her loss of privacy since becoming a successful author, Tahlula has moved to Durango. The writing was descriptive and I found myself easily imagining Durango, a place that I would love to visit.
This was a a book filled with some danger, intrigue and suspense which added an additional layer to the story.
I loved how caring, protective and supportive Evan was with Tahlula, totally swoon worthy. I think the fact that they are in their 40’s made it easier to relate to them.; it’s a refreshing change. Tahlula is spirited, independent and feisty, I loved her.
When Tahlula’s past catches up with her, Evan will do what he needs to in order to protect and keep her safe.
Evan and Tahlula make a fantastic couple and I was cheering for them to get their happily ever after.
This book is a little gem and I cannot wait to read more from Ms. Barker.
I absolutely LOVE books that keep the angst out of the main characters relationship and keeps it in the plot around them. Tallulah was a bit too independent for my general taste in a female main character (trumping Luna who is still my favorite Barker character of all time) but her know what she wants attitude and total confidence were perfect. She was a delight to read, and having Even as a foil was awesome. Once again, a man whose thoughtful, protective and not overbearing. This is a man you'd actually want to live with. Best part is the lead in to the MC series! I've been waiting since Ouray and Luna for the rest of the club :)
There's not much I love more than a thrilling realistic love story...and Freya never disappoints. I really enjoyed the guest appearance by Penelope and Moose. That was super cool and a really nice wink to their fans. Now I can't wait to get to know everyone else through the On Call Series... all the men and women that face danger on the daily, with a dose of true love....yes, please. Although, now that I've met Trunk...I'm hoping for an MC series in the future. 😉
Evan has been accused of things no Firefighter should be, he is still trying to find his way when he meets Tahlula. Tahlula just moved to the mountains for quiet and peace for her newest book, when her friend goes missing. Together Evan and Lula find their way through a suspenseful, intriguing story! This book is everything, I always wonder if Freya can do it again, SHE DOES IT EVERYTIME!!
I wasn't sure about this one going into it, all due to Evan. In the first book it was made to look like he might have been the bad guy. He wasn't, yet it colored how I thought of him. But he was so good in this one, a genuine good guy, helped his mama, worked hard at his job, helped his co-workers. I loved how smitten he was with Tahlula from the start and how he let her know he was interested in her. Sure he was a bit high handed at times, but those were usually right after Tahlula had been in danger and at that point everyone in her life was like that. But what really won me over was how accepting Evan was about Tahlula's surprise, how even at the end he wanted it and again let Tahlula know.
The drama that happened to Tahlula in this one was so wild. As things happened I kept shaking my head. I was glad that things were figured out and the bad guys dealt with, becuase Tahlula and Evan deserved to live a happy life.
One a side note, I really liked Tahlula's brother. He was surly and rough around the edges and for some reason I cackled whenever he called Evan a cracker and Tahlula yelled at him.
This is the third one in the Police and Fire Operation Alpha Series. And its fine. I have problems writing a review, because Freya’s style of writing clicks perfect with my brain, and the cinema in my head. I can’t just read her books. Five Pages and — Whoop — I directly stand on main street in Durango. I feel so familiar especially because they all live here. Keith and Ollie ( P&F 1+2 ) , and also characters from the Rock Point Series . It’s amazing for me to just click so into a style of writing that I m far away and totally in the story. And believe it just happened with every damn book Freya Barker wrote.
So I m useless to an honest review……*smile*
Let me say that everything feels perfect in this book. The characters are enchanting and the scene is well described. And sure there are some scary moments in this book. But Evan is a protective one, so don’t be afraid.
And now I yearn for “ Edge of Reason“ and Trunk and Jamie ( Release 09.12.2019 ) One personal wish might be that Freya’s books may be translated into German, so many more people could love her Story and visit Durango.
Freya Barker became one of my automatic one-click authors in 2018, when I discovered and devoured Cabin 12. Until then, I hadn’t read a wide range of romantic suspense books that spotlighted first responders, but Freya has a real gift for writing them. This latest release is another fantastic addition to her ever growing catalog of entertaining and thrilling books.
“Tracking Tahlula” is Freya’s third book set within the “Police and Fire: Operation Alpha” Fan-Fiction world. As a Twilight FF alum, I’ve been ticked to see that Freya has written several stories using one of more of Susan Stoker’s characters, and with the enthusiastic support of Stoker herself. And although I’m personally unfamiliar with Stoker’s works, I’ve enjoyed the tie-ins to her work. In this book, we’re treated to the brilliant combo of Stoker’s characters - Pen, Moose, and their pet miniature donkey, Smokey. They’re a trio you won’t soon forget!
For me, there are several refreshing elements when it comes to reading Freya Barker’s novels. I always enjoy the suspense of unfolding mysteries at the center of her novels. Her plots are always well-paced, with tensions that build to a fever pitch, and well-written action sequences.
I also love that Freya prominently features a compelling and diverse set of characters, including Native American heroes, Hispanic professionals, and in the case of Tahlula Rae, a highly successful African-American romance author. Readers looking for diversity in their fiction will be pleased with the complexity of these well-crafted individuals.
Additionally, Freya’s characters are mature adults – often in their forties. Given the combined stressors of navigating demanding careers along with unresolved personal issues, it’s refreshing to watch how these wiser characters deal with the strife hurled at them.
I’m thrilled to give “Tracking Tahlula” 5 stars, and am already eager to see what Freya publishes next!
Tracking Tahlula by Freya Barker is beautifully written romantic suspense novel that is just to die for. With a strong confident woman determined to remain independent and a gorgeous firefighter that wants nothing more than to protect her from the evil that is trying to get to her. Barker does a great job with descriptions of the breath-taking scenery in Durango Co and the story that she has brought to life on the pages of this book which is part of the On Call series. A standalone read with interesting characters that will be continued in the next book code 10-Code. 5 stars for the hotter than a forest fire book Tracking Tahlula.
Tahlula Rae has finally made it onto the New York Times bestseller list. With this great accomplishment comes some notoriety that she was not expecting. After a break-in at her apartment and threatening messages, Tahlula decides to leave Denver and move to the mountains of Durango, Co. While on routine fire warnings, firefighter Evan Biel knocks on the lone house up on the mountain to warn the owner of the upcoming dry season. What Evan did not expect was the beautiful woman that answers the door. Circumstance after circumstance push Evan and Tahlula together to the point they can no longer deny their attraction and their inevitable relationship. Tahlula slowly becomes aware of the dangers that seemed to have followed her from Denver and are threatening her secluded retreat from the world. Now Evan and the rest of the rescue squads in Durango must work extra hard to not only fight the summer’s wildfires but to keep Tahlula safe from hidden dangers.
By now, you must know that I absolutely ADORE everything that Freya Barker writes! Tracking Tahlula is no exception. If anything, this book is amongst my FAVES from her, full of all the suspense and drama that I've come to expect from her....and soooooo much more!!!
We first met Evan in Burning For Autumn, the first book in the Police and Fire: Operation Alpha crossover series with Susan Stoker's Badge of Honor series. Evan was unfairly and unjustly suspected of being an arsonist who also didn't "get the girl" (Autumn) BUT, he was not meant for Autumn....he was really waiting for Tahlula all along!
Tahlula Rae has run from Denver to Durango to escape her growing fame after writing her first bestselling novel and all the unwanted attention (both good and bad) and some frightening incidences that make her want to hide out near her only family...her brother Trunk. Little does she know that things are about to get even more scary and Evan Biel (along with some of the best people you could ever meet, including Moose and Penelope from Susan Stoker's Shelter for Penelope) will be the only things standing between her and certain death!I
As always, Ms. Barker's STELLAR writing and beautiful prose settled into my heart and soul with this INCREDIBLE, well-written and UNFORGETTABLE love story! I can't WAIT for what's coming next from one of my TOP FAVE unicorn authors!
We first met Evan Biel in Burning For Autumn, the first book in the On Call series. I was so happy the big hearted firefighter and sexy ginger was going to be getting a book.
Tahlula Rae is an author who has relocated to Durango to be near her brother and hide away from being in the public eye. She is sharp, witty and fiercely independent.
This book has everything that we love from Freya Barker, strong, independent female characters, hot protective alpha males, exceptional secondary characters, a fast paced suspenseful storyline, and amazing chemistry between Evan and Tahlula.
The storyline flowed and had twists and turns that kept me turning page after page. I loved these characters so much and did not want the story to end. It was great to reconnect with characters from the FBI and Arrows Edge MC, Freya always weaves them in masterfully.
I don’t want to give away any of the story, trust me, just dive right in, sit back and enjoy the ride. 5 stars!
This author gives us stories with characters we can relate to and life experiences that many have had...and this story is no different.
I loved the strong, but not domineering character that was Tahlula. I don't usually pay any attention to physical descriptions but Ms Barker had me picturing Tahlula in my head, a unique and beautiful woman. Evan is pretty much her opposite and an absolutely wonderful character. He has a wonderful relationship with his mom and is a true friend to those in his circle. There was one character, okay two that helped enhance the story for me - Luke and Smokey! I especially loved where Luke came from.
The suspense in this story kept me enthralled even though I figured out the "bad guy" pretty early on. We get to see some familiar faces (and learn to love them more) and get a couple of new ones too! Overall this was a wonderful reading experience that I highly recommend - I actually recommend the whole series.
Freya Barker's #3 crossover installment into Susan Stoker's Operation Alpha features the long awaited story for fireman Evan Biel. Evan has been lingering in the background of previous installments and isn't a stranger to us loyal fans of Barker's series, in addition she manages to loop in several key elements from her other Durango based stories including the FBI, the local police and Arrow's Edge MC. It makes for a full cast and a broad range of characters but it all falls into place with Barker's skillful writing. Tracking Tahlula has the perfect balance we've grown to expect from Freya's stories: intriguing characters, mounting suspense, a slice of ordinary life and a hot romance all melded together in a book you won't want to put down.
Oh my!!! Hello Evan!!! I never tire of reading about ALPHA men and their equally strong counterparts.
I loved Tahlula’s strength and determination. She knew what she wanted and she set out to achieve her dreams. She packed up everything and made a move that would forever change her life and brought her into the path of Evan....
Evan....imagine I’m writing this with stars in my eyes.....he was a dream! He saw Tahlula and my immediate thought was him staking a claim....She is mine and mine alone !! He knew right away that Tahlula was going to have a big impact on him and boy did she ever!!!
I loved everything about this story: Evan, Tahlula, the setting....everything! Another must read from Ms. Barker!!

Freya has once again given me exactly what I love about her stories. She incorporates that right amount of romance, mystery, suspense and steam. Her characters have depth, personality and real life problems. This is Tuhlula and Evans story. Tahlula is a best selling author that has decided that the city life full of hustle and chaos is not for her anymore . She has recently discovered that her agent is missing and she now feels that she needs to get out of the spot light. She has taken up residence in Durango. Evan is a firefighter and has had his share of heartbreak. He may have gotten a raw deal in the past but he is a great man .They have an immediate attraction but it soon becomes apparent that her city life may have found her!! Loved it !!! ~~Michele McMullen ~~
Another page turner meet Hot Fireman Evan Biel and Strong independent also pregnant Author Tahlula Rae. When she moves to Durango to hide from the public eye and the Sexy ginger fireman meets her while doing wild fire patrols, he can stop thinking about her, and when he finds out that someone is trying to kill her, he’ll stop at nothing to keep her safe. This story involves stalking, murder and so much more. It ‘s the kind of book when you start reading it you can’t put it down till the last page and you just can’t get enough of the characters it will put a smile on your face cause the guy always gets his girl.
Another great addition to this On Call series! I’ve been wanting to know more about the firefighter Evan since first meeting him in Burning For Autumn. When meeting Tahlula I thought she was a perfect match for him. Strong, independent, witty, loving...all the things that make for a great female lead for me. Their story kept me entertained from start to finish. We were introduced to some new characters in this book and I can’t wait to get their stories, especially Jaimie and Trunk! I have a feeling their book will be explosive!
