The Pinkerton Matchmaker #46

An Agent for Phoebe

Rate this book

She’ll risk her life, but can she risk her heart?

At forty-one, Phoebe finally knows what she wants in life, and it isn’t another husband. Her first marriage was enough to convince her that she’s done with men.

Becoming a Pinkerton agent seems like the perfect way to true independence, until she discovers she must temporarily marry her training agent. Of course, some women might find Jonah Hays’ good looks and kind nature attractive.

But not Phoebe.

She’s done with men.

When the search for a missing accountant amongst the mountains and gold mines of Colorado becomes a desperate struggle for survival, she and Jonah grow closer. And the walls around her heart begin to crumble.

Although she’s still done with men.

Maybe.

Lady Pinkerton detectives, their rough and ready agents, and a whole lot of excitement and romance! The Pinkerton Matchmaker series tells the stories of the women determined to bring criminals to justice, and the agents who win their hearts. Each book is a standalone story and they can be read in any order.

Nerys Leigh writes wildly romantic stories about American mail order brides, which could be considered strange as she is British and has never been married. But she thinks the old adage of writing what you know is codswallop.

She thinks cheesecake and white chocolate are mankind's greatest inventions. One day she’ll eat a white chocolate cheesecake and her life will be complete.

She loves nothing more than to guide her heroes and heroines to true love and then find out that other people adore her characters as much as she does.

If you sign up for her newsletter at http://eepurl.com/b-Gj2T she will he so ridiculously grateful that she’ll give you a free novella called The Blacksmith’s Heart, the story of a widowed single father who finds the love of his life a second time.

Nerys hasn’t ever used the word codswallop before. It’s likely she never will again.

I’ve reviewed Nerys Leigh’s previous contributions to The Pinkerton Matchmaker series, and have enjoyed them all (An Agent for Belle, An Agent for Clara, and An Agent for Kitty). I enjoyed An Agent for Phoebe as much, if not more.

Phoebe has already survived twelve unpleasant years of marriage, and has no intention of repeating the experience. As such, she is less than impressed when she arrives at the Pinkerton Detective Agency to be trained as a detective and finds the first requirement is that she marry the male agent who will train her. Jonah Hays is equally unimpressed. He has no desire to chain himself to a female.

(As an aside, I do wonder when the owners of the Pinkerton Detective Agency are going to realise the flaws in their clever plan: should their matched agents decide to stay married, the female will need to leave when she starts the inevitable family. And what happens if they don’t remain married? Will the agency owners allow the women to investigate alone? No matter. Thinking about such questions undermines the entire premise of this excellent series.)
It was refreshing to read about an older couple—Phoebe is forty-one, and Jonah is thirty-nine. As such, they are both intelligent adults who know their own minds. I’m getting too old to be interested in characters who behave like immature teens, and that’s one thing I appreciate about Nerys Leigh’s heroes and heroines.

The story itself was excellent. It’s set in the real-life Black Hawk, Colorado, and the book emphasised the working conditions in and around the mines, especially the smell. I’ve visited old mine sites here in New Zealand, so could well imagine the conditions, but had never thought of how noisy or smelly it would be.

The case itself ran about as smoothly as expected, and I was impressed with some of the small details in the plot (which I won’t mention, because #spoilers). But my favourite aspect was the fast-paced and witty dialogue. It was a pleasure to read, and I recommend An Agent for Phoebe.

An Agent For Phoebe ( The Pinkerton Matchmaker ) Book # 46
By: Nerys Leigh
An Agent For Phoebe is book number forty-six in The Pinkerton Matchmaker Series. This is a stand-a-lone read with no problems. Wow, I just love these Pinkerton stories. This is Phoebe and Jonah’s story. I cracked up laughing at these two. i did not want to put it down. I also loved James , he played his part really well. Phoebe and Jonah must marry before Phoebe can start training to become a Pinkerton agent. Now she has said she is done with men. Does she want to be an agent enough to do what they tell her to do . What about Jonah ,does he go along with the rules of training a new Agent? There is lots of action in this story that had me trying to read faster to see what was going to happen next.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive review. All opinions are my own.

This is number 46 in the Pinkerton
matchmaker series.
It has to be one of my favourites.

Phoebe, is anxious to become a Pinkerton agent.
Arriving for training, she is soon matched with Jonah, a seasoned agent.
Together they are sent out to a frontier mining town, one of the staff has disappeared.

Jonah, expected Phoebe to be a lady of her time, with social skills and sewing being her main skills.
Phoebe however was able to show that she was more capable than he expected.

Then there was the street boy, James.
He was a delight to read about & very funny.
I hope we see more of him in the future.

This book had some really delightful scenes, and some more serious scenes.
Some where very touching & others had me laughing to myself.

Nerys has written another delightful book, she is a talented author.
I look forward to reading more in this series.

This is probably my favorite agent book, I loved everything about it! The characters were so great. I have to say my favorite was James, he was one smart little kid. Phoebe and Jonah had me laughing at how much they loved to argue with each other. There is lots of action in this story which really kept me guessing at how things were going to turn out. With romance, mystery, and action this was one book any reader will have a hard time putting down!

Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

Determination becomes intrigue

Both Jonah and Phoebe have felt the sting of rejection and are determined to avoid marrying, but Archie has other ideas, giving an ultimatum of marry or leave.
From the first moment their verbal barbs and sparring are witty and entertaining, bringing a smile to your face even as they face dire circumstances.
An enjoyable addition to the series which I read on Kindle Unlimited

Fun author to follow.

I have now read many of Nerys Leigh's books. I like meeting characters from get other books at least in a small way in her books. Sometimes previous characters have a bigger role than others but no matter its fun to meet them again.
She writes Good clean novels which bring in a bit of Biblical values but not enough to stop a person who holds different values to be put off.

Phoebe and Jonah

Phoebe and Jonah are paired together to train Phoebe to become a Pinkerton agent but they must marry to work together. Neither one wants marriage but they accept the situation for the time being. It's an action packed romantic adventure. A wonderful story.

I enjoyed this book. Phoebe and Jonah are older than the usual romantic leads or Pinkerton agents. It gives them different perspectives and experiences. Nerys Leigh brings a story with intrigue, mystery, humor and of course romance. It is a very good addition to the Pinkerton series.

This story was well written and entertaining. In such an amazing series like this, it's tough to be in my top favourite list and this book just wasn't quite there. Still good though.
Phoebe is older than the other new recruits but the author did well of matching her to a more mature agent, close to her age.
I thought their initial interactions were funny. I wasn't crazy about their sort of banter bickering throughout the book, but I think that's just not my style.
They are in a mining town looking for a missing accountant. There was a lot of time spent in the woods and that felt a bit endless but I didn't get bored enough to skip ahead. A clean, sweet romance.
