RUNNING OUT OF TIME (Tactical Crime Division Book #4) by Cindi Myers is the fourth book in this Harlequin Intrigue multi-author series featuring members of the FBIs Tactical Crime Division. This is a specialized unit of the FBI formed to handle the toughest cases at a moment’s notice anywhere in the country.
Family owned Stroud Pharmaceuticals is the major employer in the small town of Mayville. The TCD is called in to discover who tampered with the company’s best-selling herbal Stomach Soothers. The tampered bottles contained ricin and have so far killed six.
Jace Cantrell and Laura Smith are partnered undercover to portray a married couple working in the plant. The easy-going, rule-bending Jace is not sure how well this will work with the by-the-rules, uptight Laura. As they work to find the killer, they soon have even more to unravel as a bomb explodes by a plant door and kills an employee. They soon uncover that there were more bombs made.
The couple now needs to figure out if they have one killer or two and what is the motive before more people are killed. As the tension and suspense build to solve this case, so does the heat in their undercover marriage.
I enjoyed this addition to the series. It is a romantic suspense with a well written balance between the romance and the suspense. The ‘opposites attract’ romance is paced believably and both characters are fully fleshed for this shorter book. The sex scenes are short and just barely explicit. The suspense plot kept me guessing, not so much regarding who was guilty, but who was responsible for which criminal activity. I felt the romance was predictable, but I enjoyed the characters and the suspense kept me engrossed and turning the pages right up to ‘The End’.
I enjoyed this romantic suspense addition to the TCD series!
Someone has poisoned medications of Stroud Pharmaceuticals and six people have died. The Tactical Crime Division team is sent into the factory undercover to investigate. Jace Cantrell and Laura Smith are to pose as a mailed couple working at Stroud, a family owned business in West Virginia.. When an explosion kills another person it ends up a race against time to find the killer before they kill more people. The threat is that six people will die. Can Laura and Jace find the culprit and save the other five targets? Laura and Jace do not get along as he thinks she is tightly wound and a rule keeper at all costs whereas Laura believes Jace is too quick to disregard the rules and cut corners. How can they work together? This story moves at a good pace throughout. Laura and Jace are both likeable and yes, it makes for an interesting working relationship given their differences. Not to mention an attraction that flares up between them. On the whole an engaging suspense filled read. A couple of steamy sex scenes for those who enjoy them. I skimmed through them but enjoyed the rest of the book. Though this is book 4 in the series it stands alone fine. An interesting read that kept my attention. Readers will enjoy trying to work out who is responsible and why. Some of you might work it out early or maybe not?
Laura "Smitty" Smith and Jace Cantrell go undercover as a married couple in order to investigate Stroud Pharmaceuticals. Apparently, product tampering has taken place at the pharmaceutical company and this has resulted in several deaths. The local police was only too happy to turn the case over to the FBI, so the Tactical Crime Division (TCD) prepare a cover for Smitty and Jace.
Due to the fact that the business is run by a tight-knit family, Smitty and Jace have to tread carefully. The director of the TCD feels that someone at the company is knowledgeable about the truth. The deeper Jace and Smitty dig to find out the truth, the closer to danger they become. This works in their favor, however, because the last thing they want to do is to raise suspicion as to why they both suddenly took jobs at the company. Even with their strong cover, danger quickly is on their tails. It is hoped that Smitty and Jace can stay one step ahead of the culprits and get to the bottom of things before any more deaths occur.
Running Out of Time is the fourth and final book in the Tactical Crime Division series. This story, with a romantic element taking second place to intrigue and danger, is an excellent addition to a thrilling series. Whether or not Jace and Smitty have a future together depends on if they can stay alive.
What a wonderful and fitting end to this series. In this book I enjoyed Smitty and Jace and the sparks that flew, as with all the couples in the series. What this book and the others did was to create exceptionally realistic and dangerous stories that were riveting and impossible to put down.
Many thanks to Harlequin Intrigue and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
An explosive tale of intense investigation and sizzling romance between two conflicted FBI agents who pretend to be married for the sake of the investigation. Jace Cantrell and Laura Smith and their conflicted relationship were mentioned in the previous book of the series, and finally, we found out what was aching between them. While Jace and Laura seem like the opposites in their approach to their careers and in their background, they have more in common than they expected. They both are dedicated, hard-working, smart, and capable in their jobs, and as they get to know each other, they have that in tune and harmonious soulmate type vibe that is so attractive in a couple. I loved the play between them, the attraction that was obvious, I kinda wish there would have been more flirt between them before the building-up-attraction turned into a scorching fire. The investigation of the mounting crimes in the small town is not easy. The suspicion and distrust and uncertainty is palpable, there's a strain in the air in the small community, as the blasts keep detonating. I truly enjoyed the story, the interaction of different characters, and the escalation of the situation, the developing of the flirty romance was engaging and enticing, so much so that I ended up inhaling the tale at once. A marvelous ending for the multi-author mini-series! ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Terrific mix of suspense and romance. A pharmaceutical company in West Virginia is the victim of product tampering and the TCD is sent to investigate. In addition to the public team that is sent, Jace and Laura are sent undercover as a married couple. Laura will be the admin assistant to one of the executives while Jace will work on the floor of the factory. Neither of them is especially happy about the assignment as they don't get along very well.
I enjoyed the interactions between Jace and Laura. The tension between them at the beginning was evident. Laura is very much a by-the-book agent while Jace tends to be a little more creative in his approach. Laura thinks Jace is a loose cannon and Jace thinks Laura is wound too tight. Both will deal with their dislike to catch the killer. I loved watching the changes they went through as they were forced into close proximity. On the professional side, there were several occasions when Laura saw the benefits of working outside the box. On the personal side, the development of their relationship was fun to watch. Previously they only saw each other as fellow agents, but living together gave them a whole different outlook. The sparks of antagonism that flew before now turned to sparks of passion. Jace notices Laura's long legs and softer appearance when she is dressed casually. Laura gets quite a surprise when she gets a look at Jace in a wet shirt. The more time they spend together, the stronger those sparks grow and the closer they get. As the case nears its end, both Laura and Jace have to decide what will happen with their relationship. A close call at the end opens their eyes to what they really want.
The suspense of the story was fantastic. It opened with a bang, literally, as a bomb detonated at the factory soon after Jace and Laura started their new jobs. Jace and Laura look for motive and opportunity from within the factory while the rest of the team looks at the broader picture of who might have a grudge against the owners or the company. There are multiple options for suspects and with each new attack, the number seems to grow. When a note is found that says "two down, four to go" the TCD is determined to find the killer before anyone else dies. The tension grew as the team closed in on the culprit. I was on the edge of my seat as my suspicions grew about one person. The final confrontation was very much a mind game between the killer and the agents until Jace figured it out. Then it was a race against time to save the last target.
Running Out of Time by Cindy Myers has Agents Laura “Smitty” Smith and Jace Cantrell doing undercover in Mayville, West Virginia. Someone has tampered with Stroud’s Stomach Soothers causing six deaths and two people to be hospitalized. Laura and Jace are going to pose as a married couple and will be working at Stroud’s. They are enjoying dinner out after their first workday when there is an explosion. Someone planted a bomb on one of the factory doors at Stroud’s causing another death. Are the poisoner and the bomber the same person? The Tactical Crime Division needs to find out before another individual dies. Running Out of Time is the 4th novel in the Tactical Crime Division series. Each book in this series can be read on its own. The four books go well together, and I enjoyed reading the TCD series. I thought Running Out of Time was well-written and it moved along at a quick pace. There was plenty of action in this romantic suspense with poisoning, bombings, and bedroom activities. Sparks flew between Laura and Jace. They say that opposites attract and that is the case with this pair. There are steamy intimate scenes between Laura and Jace (I am surprised the trailer windows did not steam up). I liked that we get to learn more about Jace and Laura. You get a better understanding of their behavior once you learn about their backgrounds. The mystery was intriguing. I wish it had been more challenging to solve, but I did enjoy the mystery and suspense. There was some humor mixed in there as well such as when Laura first sees their accommodations in Mayville. Running Out of Time has suspense, action, mystery and romance blended into one entertaining story.
In this action packed fourth in the series book, the tactical crime division of the FBI are in a race against time as they seek to discover just who has poisoned commonly used medications that have already killed people taking them. They were produced by Stroud Pharmaceuticals, but what is the motive? Two agents go in undercover as a recently married couple . . . two agents who really haven't got on well in the past! As the investigation starts, it becomes even more explosive as someone plants bombs. Will they uncover the perpetrator(s) before more people die?
This books in this series are all full of unexpected twists and turns and this is definitely no exception! As the investigation progresses there are plenty of red herrings, misdirection and clues to be uncovered. It is a suspense-filled read right to the end, with a dash of romance to sweeten it! I thoroughly enjoyed this and hope there will be more books in this series in future.
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest review after choosing to read it and finding it to be a real page turner!
I really enjoyed this story. For Laura Smith and Jace Cantrell were polar opposites. But that makes the story interesting. Cindi makes this story interesting by having two different plots going on. Who is behind these plots may/may not surprise you. I like the way she changes things in the story. You start out with one problem then another kind of situation roles in. It has a good mix of suspense and action plus some interesting romance as well. The way Cindi writes this is interesting. I found it hard to put down. I'm looking forward to the next one in this series. J
This final TCD romantic suspense finished the series with a bang - literally. But it starts with a poisoning, and I may be dating myself here, but I remember the tainted Tylenol that's mentioned in this story. I also remember the panic and worry people had until it was figured out. So, something similar being used here was interesting to me. Honestly, I read a lot of mystery, suspense, and thrillers, and I'm surprised that I haven't seen it before now, so I have to give props to the author for coming up with a mystery that will likely be original to a good portion of the book's readers. Then we have the opposites attract romance, which is always good for a bit of banter and fun. There's a fine line between love and hate, and passions run high when two people are butting heads. I liked Jace from the start, but he's one of my favorite types of characters - a bit arrogant with a heart of gold. Laura is a little cold but with good reason, and I liked seeing her loosen up little by little as she and Jace got to know each other. The story is full of action and has a great balance between romance and suspense. I've enjoyed this whole Tactical Crime Division series, and I'd recommend it to anyone who reads romantic suspense.
Running Out of Time by Cindi Myers Tactical Crime Division #4
FBI Agents Laura Smith “Smitty” and Jace Cantrell are sent with a few other team members to Mayville to find a killer using poison to murder with. Working undercover as husband and wife is not comfortable at first but becomes much easier as the two cohabit and spend time together. The poison is bad but then bombs start going off with more loss of life. Is there more than one person doing the killing? Who is doing the killing and why? That is the question Jace and Smitty need to figure out with their colleagues.
What I liked: * Laura: smart, dedicated, good at her job though some think she is cold. I liked her and enjoyed watching her work to solve the case and fall in love * Jace: a man who knew what he wanted, did his job well, and fell for his partner while working to solve the case * The rest of the team * The plotting, pace and writing of the story * The romance * That the bad guys were caught * That justice was served…eventually
What I did not like: * The people that I was meant not to like * Wondering if there will be more books in the series or if this was the end
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more books by this author? Yes Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Ooof. I was drawn in by the "let's pretend to be married so we can spy on this evil corporation and take it down" FBI romance premise but was completely let down by the lack of chemistry between the two love interests. The main brunt of the page count is on the mystery about who is poisoning natural medicine tabs and setting bombs to blow up at a factory that just keeps functioning despite HAVING BOMBS BLOWING PEOPLE UP and not much is developed on the actual romance. Sure they share a trailer and pretend to be married but that is about it. I was glad the heroine was rather growly.
Jace and Laura are going undercover at Stroud Pharmaceuticals to figure out more about some poisoned medications and then about the recent explosions at the company. There is there is something going on and they are going on the inside to see who is behind this and why before things get progressively worse.
Such a great mystery suspense novel. Readers will instantly get sucked up into this interesting case from page on leaving readers wanting more. I loved following along, getting to see the suspects and the people who were around. I loved making my guesses and changing my mind as things started to take a turn for the worse. Then there was the bit of romance between the two coworkers and wondering what would become of it after the case is solve. It wasn't much for the romance department which is fine for me being that I was in it for the mystery suspense. Overall great book highly recommend!
Review: RUNNING OUT OF TIME by Cindi Myers https://wp.me/p3d0RZ-bvU Publication Date: July 1, 2020 Genre: Romantic Suspense Reviewed by: Reading in Pajamas/ Donna Rated 4 Stars
I love a quick action-packed story, and this Harlequin Intrigue delivered. I was a little worried about Laura’s uptight behavior in the beginning, but she quickly warmed up with the help of Jace. They weren’t exactly opposites, but their individual strengths worked well together and made the sexy romance believable. This story is a fun ongoing mystery that kept me guessing. I love when there are so many suspects, incidents, and underlying intrigues. A perfect summer read.
*Review copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I don't want this series to end, this is the law book of this series and I'm not ready to say goodbye. Each book has their own charms and this one has captivating story, poisoning and bombing spiced up with enemies to lovers romance, yup complex and I loveeeee it and devoured it in one sitting. The suspects pool is not that big, so it makes everything more interesting, keeps me wondering who's telling lies, what's the motive behind all the terror. Great story, awesome chemistry between the main characters, the mystery and the romance has perfect portions, so totally recommended for a fast-paced suspense romance lovers.
The Tactical Crime Division has another case to solve. Someone has poisoned medications at Stroud Pharmaceuticals and people are dying. Is this an act of terrorism or is it an inside job?
Jace Cantrell and Laura Smith are assigned to go undercover at the factory to see if they can get any inside information. Jace and Laura are not happy with the assignment as they do not really see eye to eye, but they are willing to do whatever it takes to catch the killer. The rest of the team will be in the shadows investigating other leads.
As Jace and Laura pose as a married couple at the factory, things start to heat up when a bomb goes off. Is this the same killer or someone taking revenge for the people who have died? Everyone is a suspect and the clock is ticking. Can they solve the case before anyone else dies? Can Jace and Laura still pose as husband and wife without fueling the growing attraction they have for each other?
This is the fourth book in the Tactical Crime Division series and it was a fabulous, stay on the edge of your seat mystery. I loved the book and really enjoyed the authors writing. Thank you so much to Cindi Myers, Harlequin and NetGalley for and advanced copy to read and review.
I enjoyed this book. I just read it in bits and spurts during my lunch hour. Romantic suspense has always been a favorite of mine and Harlequin does a great job with this genre.
I've really enjoyed every installment in this series, including this one. As with the others, the romance is less important than the suspense, but I found this one to have a good balance between the two. It was fun to watch two characters who are in some ways opposites work together and grown a relationship. I felt this one was especially realistic in it's portrayal of events and relationships between people. All in all I really felt it was fitting end to the series and though it could be read by itself, I would recommend reading all four books.
I love this series and I loved this gripping and entertaining installment. It's well written, the characters are fleshed out and the plot kept me hooked till the end. It's a fun read that it's highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
A Pharmaceutical Plant is the Site of Ricin Poisoning
Stroud Pharmaceutical manufactures natural stomach remedies among other natural products. The company is well respected and a major employer in Mayville, West Virginia. Then tragedy strikes. Six people are dead from ricin poisoning and others are hospitalized. This could be the work of terrorists, but why strike a small town manufacturer?
Laura Smith and Jace Cantrel from the Tactical Crime Division (TCD) are assigned to go undercover in Mayville as newly weds. They’ll be working at the plant in the executive offices and on the production floor in the hopes of finding how the crimes were committed. The only problem is that Laura is uptight and proper and Jace is laid back. Can they actually put on a believable show as newly weds?
This a quick read. The budding romance between Laura and Jace is the highlight of the story. The perpetrators of the crime are fairly easy to guess given the dearth of suspects. However, the author handles the clues well to keep the tension high.
The small town setting is interesting and filled with unique characters. This is a good addition to the TCD series as Book 4.
I received this book from Harlequin for this review.
Running Out of Time is a unique romantic suspense where two agents go undercover and pretend to be a married couple. They are trying to investigate a pharmaceutical company and are surprised at all the secrets they uncover. It's full of unexpected moments in which one wrong decision can cost lives.
Jace and Laura are trying to figure out some secrets that a local pharmaceutical company is hiding and they are putting themselves in danger each time they uncover something. The book is full of adrenaline because of the time constraints they face.
It was so interesting and fun to see these two work together and keep their own secret of being a married couple.
I give Running Out of Time 5 stars. It's reads like a movie and it was thrilling until the very end. It was my favorite in the Tactical Crime Division series.
In “Running Out of Time” by Cindi Myers, FBI agents Laura Smith and Jace Cantrell are tasked to find out who put poison in medicine and is now setting off bombs at Stroud Pharmaceuticals. To do so, they pose as a married couple, working at the company.
Laura is the buttoned-up, hair-in-a-bun, serious agent, while Jace is the rough-around-the-edges, bend-the-rules type. The two manage to find common ground as they work the case and fall in love at the same time.
Opposites attract in this classic whodunit, book four of Harlequin Intrigue’s Tactical Crime Division.
Nooooooo!!!! I did not want this series to be over! I have really enjoyed all four of the books in the Tactical Crime Division series. I loved the collaboration between the authors and the fun book trailer that was created for this series. This last book, titled Running out of Time, by Cindi Myers is about Jace Cantrell and Laura Smith. Jace is definitely the hot alpha military type and Laura is the uptight behind the scenes researcher. They both work for the Tactical Crime Division and are sent in undercover as a married couple. That right there was a great beginning. Who knows what juicy things will happen when forced to live together???
Jace and Laura are being sent in as the new employees at Stroud Pharmaceuticals to figure who is behind a string of poisonings linked with tampered packages of the company’s best-selling herbal Stomach Soothers. As possible suspects are rooted out, the tension and suspense rise in this story along with the sexual tension between Jace and Laura. There are several secondary characters that add a lot to the story that readers will enjoy. I also love the small-town setting (Mayville) which adds to the connections between victims and possible suspects. There are multiple bombings which adds to the urgency of getting this crime solved. The author did a nice job working in some humor to some of the scenes. I particularly enjoyed it when Laura got to their trailer and saw just one bed. She was already distracted by Jace’s presence. Her reaction will have you laughing. I love that the author was able to add this humor to otherwise serious and tragic events. It added a lot to the story. I’m a sucker for a happy ending and this book will not disappoint. Read the whole series. If you are not currently a reader of romantic suspense, this series might convince you otherwise.
I bought this book as part of a set. I’ve enjoyed all the books so far including this one. The suspense was really good. FBI agents Laura and Jace are sent to a small town to pose as a married couple. Neither of them liked the idea at first, but the two fell for one another throughout the story. Someone had poisoned medication at a pharmaceutical company and people have died. The two started working at the company to get to the bottom of it. Not sure if it’s related but bombs exploded targeting some of the people that worked there. I guessed one of the key players early in the book, but had no idea the extent of what this person was capable of. This was another great book in this series. This series can be read out of order. So far none of the books have ended in cliffhangers. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Running Out of Time by Cindi Myers is another exciting read in the Tactical Crime Division series. I love how each of the books in this series was written by a different writer. This was my first time reading a book by Cindi Myers. It was great. The plot had plenty of action. The suspense didn't really begin until a bit more towards the middle of the story. The danger did escalate as the book built up steam. The team members were amazing. I liked the pair that were setup together in this particular novella. They suited each other perfectly. The leading lady wasn't reckless but still new how to adapt in order to get the job done well. This book is similar to CSI and Criminal Minds.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
One of the Tactical Crime Division series in which two TCD agents go undercover as a married couple in order to learn who might have added poison to several bottles of pharmaceuticals made by the company. Shortly after they arrive, bombings begin as well, but it's unclear if the person doing the poisoning is the same person doing the bombing.
As Jace and Laura begin to collect clues, they also get closer to each other, an unexpected result they hadn't anticipated. But how close becomes crystal clear when Jace realizes how close to being killed Laura is. Can he get to her in time to save her?
Running Out of Time is the fourth book in the multiple author Tactical Crime Division series. It was a fast-paced, suspenseful read with great characters. From the first page until the last I couldn't put this suspenseful thriller down. It was full of action, suspense and danger. If you like Romantic Suspense, you will love this book.
You know a book is predictable when you figure out who was the mastermind of the plot on page 15. Normally I enjoy my HQ books for a fast read. Not this one. I finished it but it was to much like work.
This was a pretty good book. The story was well paced. The main characters were really exciting to follow on their journey. I read the other books in this series and I thought this was the perfect conclusion! I highly recommend. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
When product tampering leads to several deaths members of the TCD are sent in to figure out who's responsible shortly into their investigation bombs are going off can they are going to have to work quickly. I honestly enjoyed reading this continuity series.
