This review covers books 1-8.
These are a lot of silly fun, and more than a little addictive. They are decently well written (despite some continuity issues) but pretty much what you'd expect from a romance/mystery novel. Sookie's "voice" works better in some books than in others, and some plot threads are more compelling than others. Just when things started to drag a bit, there was a hell of a plot twist, and not one that I'd seen coming. I've enjoyed the whole series, so far, though book 4 is definitely my favorite.
I vote no on the Twilight/Southern Vampire Mysteries comparisons. Both series feature a human female who gets mixed up in what Sookie would call "crazy vampire shit," and both have some werewolf action going on, but that's about as deep as the similarities go. They are different kinds of stories, written differently and focusing on different issues.
And, while I'm comparing, I'll say that I like Sookie better here in the books than I do on True Blood, the HBO series inspired by the books. I say "inspired by," rather than "based on," because some of the changes are pretty substantial, though not necessarily bad - I like Bill better on the show, for example, and quite like the way Tara and Lafayette were changed/expanded. I love Eric in both versions :)
Looking forward to the next one (comes out in May, I believe)...

Okay, I should probably start by saying I love vampires. I've loved vampires since I was old enough to know what they were. I have dreamed a lot of dreams about vampires, even before David Boreanaz made them sexy as hell. The dreams changed a bit after that, of course.
I started TIVOing the HBO series TruBlood, and it started out a little on the strange side, kind of gross at times, and I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it. But because it was vampires (and quite a few sexy vampires) I stuck with it. I had no idea it was based on books until I came across the box set and picked it up.
The first book was basically the entire first season, so I knew most of what happened. The main character, Sookie Stackhouse, is a telepath and she can't "hear" vampire minds (when I first started the show, it seemed a take on Twilight, which might have added to my less than enthusiastic response to it), so of course she is attracted to one that comes into the bar where she works. And that's all I'm going to say about that...
I read each of these books (there are 7 in the box set) in about a 24 hour period. If I didn't have two rugrats that keep me pretty busy during the day I would have finished them earlier. The stories are dangerous and sexy, quite funny at times, and once I started one it was a challenge to put it down. Part of me was hoping that the last book in the box set was the last book in the series, since I would occasionally like to read something else, but when I got to the end of book 7 and realized that there is another book, I was just annoyed that I would have to wait to read it.
I would recommend these books to anyone who can suspend their belief system to encompass the supernatural, because the author doesn't stop with vampires!

Good ol' fashioned slutty fun! I have been addicted to these silly books from the moment I picked one up. There is no real arc to the story line accept when you find out why supernatural beings are so interested in Sookie, but each book is set up as an individual adventure in which our heroin is constantly getting the shit kicked out of her. Sookie just dusts herself off and moves on to the next adventure. I loved the southern perspective and the way she really captured the vernacular to a T. Growing up in the south you hear so many amazing sayings and one-liners that no one else really uses, but you can always tell a southerner when you hear them use one. Harris' books are chocked full of these. I read through book eight, and barring small disappointments along the way I thoroughly enjoyed the whole damn series and would recommend them to anyone who's just looking for a bit of campy fun.

I’ll start out by saying that the three stars are for the writing, not the entertainment value. And I’ll be the first one to admit that I’ve given some atrociously-written books all sorts of stars, but I just didn’t in this case. These books were lots of fun, though. I don’t really have enough to say to review them all individually, so I chose this extremely convenient box set option which covers books one through seven.
First, let’s talk about Sookie. I like old Sook – she says things that make me laugh out loud every now and again and she has an interesting love life. What I don’t like about her is that Harris goes out of her way to remind me that she’s poor, uneducated, and backwater; I feel like I wouldn’t consider her to be such if she didn’t bring it up so much. Also, Sookie pretty much gets the tar knocked out of her every single book, and that starts to get a little repetitive after the fifth or so time. But you do have to hand it to her for being a brave little toaster.
Next, the vamps. Bill has his moments, I suppose, but by and large he’s pretty uninspiring. I was perfectly content when we started thinking of him as “Nameless”. Despite the fact that he veers dangerously close to a number of bad romance novel stereotypes, I rather like Eric. At least he has a sense of humor and a little panache. I actually think I prefer the version of Eric from “TrueBlood”, who’s a bit less romance novel and more a very tall, put-upon bureaucrat who takes undue pleasure in making veiled threats and bossing Pam around. Speaking of Pam, I really can’t get enough of her. It’s that mix of dry literalness, Dear Abby, bloodthirstiness, perfect candor, and PTA-chic wardrobe. She’s my favorite character hands down.
I could pretty well take or leave most of the other characters besides Sam. Alcide and Quinn were both perfectly alright, but they didn’t do a lot for me. Ditto the waitresses and other persons about town. The fairies were not quite as entertaining as I wanted them to be, although I did enjoy Claude’s utter lack of social skills. I had a terrible time keeping track of the vampire hierarchy Harris set up – I couldn’t ever remember who was king or queen of what and all the underlings and petty rulers were even more confusing; I briefly considered jotting down a little chart, but then decided I couldn’t be bothered with the effort. Still, it didn’t really hurt my enjoyment of the books. I guess you have to expect a lot of characters to keep track of in a nine-book-and-counting series.
These books are pretty much what you expect them to be: entertaining, funny, full of Southern charm, and prone to moments of obvious writing. In that light, I would recommend them. They made for very enjoyable light summer reading, of which I was very much in need.

As far as silly vampire soap operas, the Sookie Stackhouse books are fun and entertaining. They are totally girl-centric, and by that I mean that each love interest for Sookie fulfills some stereotypical ideal fantasy man for all kinds of women. The sensible good looking romantic (Bill), the bad good looking boy (Eric), the strong good looking masculine type (Alcide), and the uber masculine good looking protective guy (Quinn). And they're all good looking, if I didn't mention that. Sookie herself apparently has beer flavored nipples, or blood flavored...to pull a quote Heath Ledger. Every guy, and most of the women, are coocoo for Sookie puffs. She is the pinnacle of what every man wants back home in his trailer park, re-stitching his confederate flag onto every wife beater. Ok that might be an exageration, but Sookie seems like an older woman's interpretation of what a classy but not ostentatious quaint young woman should be, right down to her awful clothes. I cringe at most every outfit description. She's so modern though, she likes sex, and gets turned on by all these good looking men throwing themselves at her! But she is not a one night stand girl, she requires non-sexual attention in order to give sexual attention...so she still withholds her sexuality in order to incur favorable behavior. Kinda like I don't give my dog a treat until he actually sits, a good quality sit and none of this half hearted butt hover bs. Clearly I got pissed during the scene when she almost has sex with Quinn. I need my vicarious tiger sex!
Despite the dated outfits and the stereotypical characters, there are some really originat characters as well. Eric is a good character, as is Pam, Jason and Amelia. Sookie's ok...we would just not be besties...

Though I'm not exactly proud of the fact, I will admit that I recently finished reading this 10-book series in about 8 weeks. For other TrueBlood fans who may be considering diving into the books, there is enough of a departure to keep the story interesting. The first few books are fun to compare against the TV series (perhaps that's why they were easily my favorites). While certainly far from great literature, the series was entertaining and helped keep my mind off some stressful things going on in my life. So, a good diversion.
Charlaine Harris does a nice job of creating a unique voice for Sookie, especially considering the amount of dialog Sookie speaks. Reading the books made me appreciate Anna Paquin's faithful portrayal. In fact, I'm kind of amazed by her. If I hadn't experienced Paquin's version of Sookie, much of the dialog and Sookie's interactions would've read as unforgivably hokey.
There are a couple of things that really annoyed me that I have to call out. First, throughout the series, Harris insults the reader's intelligence by discounting Sookie's. For example, we are constantly reminded that Sookie is merely a waitress and doesn't have a college education; the larger words in Sookie's vocabulary are always explained as being from her Word-a-Day calendar (gah!); and her entire knowledge about the world is apparently based on romance novels and mysteries, because she says so. Why can't she just be a smart, sassy heroine, damn it?
Second, so much of each book is spent recapping what happened in the previous books. Perhaps that wouldn't have bothered me as much if I hadn't read them back to back, but I do think explaining basic things in every book, like Sookie is telepathic and vampires are dead, are a tad overkill. No pun intended.
All that said, I'm still giving it 3-stars. I'm a fan of Sookie and I hope she gets her man troubles figured out soon.

These are the books that the popular TV series "True Blood" is based on. Having already seen the show I found the books hard to get into at first. I already knew the plot for the first two books and found it difficult to make my own images of the characters without automatically seeing the actors from the show. Once I got over that I really enjoyed these books. The stories follow the same basic guideline as the show but with some major differences. After reading the books you can see that the writers for the TV show follow the storyline of the books quite loosely, while adding their own flair. I loved getting to know the characters better through the book, I completely fell in love with some characters that meant nothing to me in the TV show.
On the down side, I did find the books to be a little annoying at times, in particular with the main character Sooki. I found that it got to be a bit much in the romance department and instead of keeping Sooki with a few admirers, every man she came across in the book HAD to have her. She seemed to be kissing someone different every time you turn around and she comes off as incredibly naive and wishy washy when it comes to the men in her life. I also could have done without the parts with Quinn entirely.
Regardless, these are some great books and I'd recommend them to anyone who enjoys romance, danger and the supernatural.

These books are addictive and just so much fun!
I was able to polish off each book in about 1-2 days, so the last couple weeks have been filled with vampirey goodness. The series reminds me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in its overly dramatic combination of romance, humor and bloody carnage. I'm sure the new TV show (True Blood) is going to feel similar but I haven’t seen any episodes yet. The dialog can be a bit, eh, lackluster and scenarios become increasingly outrageous but that makes it all that much of a guilty pleasure. I'm a fan. :)
The only thing that really annoyed me was the repetition of character history. I should think that the reader would be accountable for keeping track of some fairly basic information but the author apparently thinks we need the refresher every time she starts a new book (or chapter). Oh well. I guess we’ll never be confused about the particulars of how and why “Bubba” was turned.

I fell in love with the show True Blood, during season one, but ended up canceling HBO, to tighten the financial belt. When I heard it was based on a book series, I simply had to read them... The books... well... not very good. They are written like a 14 year old fat girl, who has never actually talked to a real boy, would write fan fiction... she forgets from book to book what she wrote in previous books, and when she refers to "history" of the story she gets it wrong... and she neglected fact checking... and while I can get down with the fact that Sookie's new boyfriend can turn into a Tiger... when said Tiger Man purrs... I've just lost all suspension of disbelief, she may as well have said, "Ha Ha Ha, vampires don't exist", because, I know, for a fact, that tigers do not purr... The cheetah is the only big cat that purrs...

I mean they’re not perfect but the amount of times I’ve gone back to reread, they deserve all the stars. They’re interesting, characters are rounded for the most part and even though it’s a long series the books stay interesting mostly. They do tend to trail off at the end but they’re still good!

I bought this boxed set knowing nothing about HBO's True Blood. Since then, I've become pretty much addicted to the show, but these fun, fast, quirky mystery/romance books have brought me hours of entertainment as well.
This series is set in a world where vampires have recently "come out of the coffin," meaning, their existence has been revealed to the world. They are fighting for legal rights, to be accepted into society, etc. The books follow Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid in Bon Temps, Louisiana, who can hear people's thoughts. This causes a major strain in her love life (who wants to hear everything your significant other is thinking all the time?). When she meets Bill Compton, a vampire, she finds she can hear nothing he's thinking. So, basically, she falls head over heels for him. However, their relationship and Sookie's useful ability causes her to be unknowingly plunged into the world of the undead and other dastardly supernatural creatures.
So begins this series. I'm not going to lie and say these are some great literary accomplishment, but they're fun, light reads that are consistently entertaining. The characters are very likeable, and the mysteries are interesting and inventive. Boredom won’t be a problem here.
I think the problem people have with these books is they watch True Blood and then come to the books. The world in True Blood is a little more complex than the world in these books, simply because the books are from Sookie's perspective only. Many of the subplots that are explored in the TV series are only touched upon in the books. However, that's fine with me. These books are addictive and fun enough on their own.

You know why this series is great?? Because its lazy, no effort reading! Everything is just so. Even the secrets are so plain & in your face that it makes you wonder: am i a moron for being soo hooked on these books? But you aren't! Not by any means! If you want a simple escape into a fantasy world where you have everything pretty much thought out for you, this is the collection to read!
For example: Bubba. We all know who Bubba is don't we? But the secrecy of bot saying his name is so (dare i say it) suspenseful!
This series is for pure entertainment, when you want to allow you mind to roam in another dimension. Its not the kind of book you sit back & ponder over. You read it & move on to the next one. Why? Because you have to!
We all know Sookie is going to meet someone new, whether its a new supe or a new 'person' & the plot pretty much is the same: she's in trouble, she's out of trouble, she knows of trouble, or trouble is headed for her, but generally the same plot!
These books can be likened to candy. It's sweet so you eat it ,And you enjoy it. Thats it. No benefit just simple leisure enjoyment with minimal brain involvement. :)

We all know Sookie is going to meet someone new, whether its a new supe or a new 'person' & the plot pretty much is the same: she's in trouble, she's out of trouble, she knows of trouble, or trouble is headed for her, but generally the same plot!
These books can be likened to candy. It's sweet so you eat it ,And you enjoy it. Thats it. No benefit just simple leisure enjoyment with minimal brain involvement. :)

#1 Dead Until Dark- included a brilliant description of someone we all know, "Denise wasn't truly pretty, but she was so flashy and confident that it took a while to figure that out."
It was written a bit too simply to hold my attention. The sex scenes were more Cinemax, not imaginative. And the character Sookie has an interesting talent but is otherwise incredibly dull.
I continue the series because my friend said it got better.

1. Dead Until Dark

I never read something like this book. Never. It has everything I wanted!
It was so amazing! I was also scared, happy during this book. I was scared together with the characters. I loved and fought with them. I suspected and resolved mysteries with them.
This book is the best thriller, horror, fantasy book I ever read in my life. This book was something new in my entire reader life and I’m so happy I picked this up.
If u love vampires, then this book is for you. Horror, thriller, mystery and romance, this book is perfect.
2. Living Dead in Dallas
Amazing!
Charlaine is an amazing author! She is surprising me every time.
After I finished the first book I didn’t thought that the next one would be as good. But I was wrong. The next one was way better than the first one.
The relationship between Bill and Sookie is getting closer to a normal human relationship. They have fights, they buy gifts, they do human things together.
Eric is a much important character in the second book, being more active on this book. He has an intense atraction for Sookie, which is good for me, bcs I love him so muchhhh, and I really hope there will be something between them.
New characters are making an entrance, each other in a different way.
Not many things to say, but just this book, it’s worth it! It’s amazing and short and way better than the first!

First, I ship Sookie with Eric.

Sookie was getting in trouble more than in the first books, she discovered what she likes, she was making new friends.
With Bill absent, this book was my fav. Sorry guys, but I do not like him. Eric is my heart❤️.
Back to the book now. With Bill’s absence, Sookie became closer to Eric, something got born between them. I really love how Eric did everything in his power to protect Sookie, to heal her and keep her safe.
Alcide was such a nice boy and I’m feeling so so sorry for him, because Sookie didn’t started dating him. But I hope in the next books Sookie will meet Alcide again and they will become closer.

I’m so happy of Alcide’s decision😏 and I know that he did what was the best.

Guilty pleasure reading, for sure! The character of Sookie is much sassier and funnier than on the HBO series TrueBlood. I like the Southern Vampire type books...easy, quick, fun reads, especially during the school year when I'm bogged down in Dickens or Sophocles!

I really liked Charlaine Harris' writing style. She kept me guessing, it was unpredictable and I like being kept in suspense. Her characters are well developed and interesting. She's very creative in how she comes up with each creatures abilities, especially as they relate to Sookie.

I loved the ongoing story in this series, although I could have done without all the sex! It kept me hooked throughout so that I was just obsessed with getting the next book. Of course, it is all fantasy and fiction, but thoroughly enjoyable to pretend some things exist!

I rated this series with 3 stars, because some of you may reasonably get into the story. As well, the writing style is great. IMO the story got a bit redundant; the main character always looking for Bill, having to bully her way around many other characters to find him. And then it turns out later that things in the main relationship between the main characters don't turn out as planned anyway... And then fairies are introduced... in a vampire/werewolf story. I wont give any more away than that. I did have a fun time, for the most part, reading through the first few books, but I just couldn't get into them overall. You may like them, especially if you are a teen female reader. Not trying to stereotype.
Personal side note-
I am into male/female equality. In fact, it has been proven that, on an emotional level, males and females have the same kind of brain. The difference lies in the types of details that males and females notice in a general way. Males tend to focus on fewer things at a time, not implying that males are 'incapable', it's just a fact of focus. And females tend to acknowledge a broader array of details... tangent, sorry. Please continue with you perusing of other Good Reads reviews... Thanks

Took me three months to get through reading at a slow pace. I have the next four (or 5?) books purchased separately, so I will continue on.
I'm not generally a long series fan, so it's a credit to these books that they do stay interesting. I've got to admit, the constant fighting is starting to wear thin, though, and I do miss the earlier simpler stories, so it will be interesting to see if my opinion changes on these last few books. Sookie is a really good character and I like it better when she's in normal settings than attending big supernatural events. The fairy twist was also a turn for the worst.

I liked the books so much more than the TV show. Sookie's story makes more sense, and rather than a sensationalist erotic fantasy, the books tell the story of a young woman who gets drawn into a magical, sometimes scary and violent, but always interesting world, where much more is possible than she had thought. She also realises her place in this world and is gutsy and loyal.
Some of this essence was picked up in the TV show but it could have been so much more if they'd stuck to the story in the books.

I originally found out about this book series by watching the HBO Series True Blood ...
That said ... The books ARE WAY BETTER! I actually had to stop watching the show because they strayed so far from the well written books.
Loved it! The Books are WAY better than the Show True Blood! Each book gets better and better!

All I can say is the books are so so so much better than the HBO series True Blood. I have read each of this series of books over and over again. I will read them again too, and then again. Thank you Charlaine for making me stay up till dawn many nights in a row so I could continue reading. I want to be Sookie.

Loved all the books, the first one seems badly written but once I got into the second, I was hooked!!
Don't make the same mistake I did and attempt to watch the Tv show, all your bill and Eric fantasies will be ruined for good.
