King of the Moon

"...the sun began rising just over the hill where the clouds would whistle a magical tune about an apple tree named Sam, Sam’s friendship with Clyde, and Clyde’s trip to the moon."

With the second of his series Mr. Kind's unique, at times off-beat, lyrical rhyme is once again complimented to life by the graphic expression of Zacc Pollitt's dynamic neo-visualization techniques. Clyde wants nothing more than to share with his friend. But an apple tree, you see, can not chew and so Clyde, for the sake of friendship, takes it upon himself to journey to the moon. He will have so much to do when he arrives there and with the help of a talkative white table he just might find something to share.

Mr. Kind uses an entirely unique lyrical rhyme coupled with the marvelous graphic imagery of Zacc Pollitt to weave the stories that last for generations:
With “four marbles, and a shooter quite fat,” a stranger teaches Bluff about the dangers of arrogant boasting; in The Tree we learn how the bird came to sit on the rhino’s head; King of the Moon outlines Clyde’s otherworldly journey all for the sake of friendship; and with The Princess and The Stool it is made very clear that the greatest of hero will many times come in the smallest of packages.
Spectacularly illustrated with read aloud rhythm, Mr. Kind Stories are a YouthWide jubilation produced in association with Prove Nothing.

“King of the Moon” is the second book in the Mr. Kind Stories series by Mr. Kind. It’s an amusing tale that’s exudes magical charm through an enchanting story about friendship.

The main character, Clyde, is a quirky young man whose bright and colorful attire match his whimsical personality perfectly. Clyde may appear silly, but he has a heart of gold and just wants to share his lunch with his dear friend Sam, the apple tree. When Clyde realizes Sam couldn’t possibly chew on a ham and cheese sandwich, he sets off on an adventure to the moon via a magical golden staircase to find something he can share with Sam. Along his journey he encounters a strange world with polka-dot skies and magical crystals. He meets many eccentric characters such as a talking white table, a beautiful Queen of the Moon, and finally, the King of the Moon himself! But will Clyde find something on the moon he can share with his friend, Sam?

This is such a fun story to read. The tone perfectly radiates magic and readers will feel they have been delivered to another world – the moon, in fact, right alongside Clyde. I can’t say the rhythm is perfectly metered – it’s more of an offbeat type of rhythm that absolutely matches the distinctive, charming characters.

The illustrations are vibrant and bold and just as magical as the words. Every spread has visual impact making the characters and scenes, and even magic tables come to life.

“King of the Moon” is a picture book that all ages will enjoy. It’s a magical voyage to a fantastical world that seamlessly incorporates messages about sharing and friendship.

Mr. Kind does live storytelling and I had a great time visiting his website to see all he has to offer. It’s obvious he has a passion for what he does – and doesn’t that just make all the difference in the world! I highly encourage readers to check his website on the links provided below. Mr. Kind will make you smile!

“King of the Moon” by Mr. Kind is an unusual adventure that starts with an apple tree named Sam and ends up on a golden path to the moon. Clyde the main character loves his tree he calls Sam, and when Sam gets sick Clyde goes on a journey to the moon to ask the Moon King for help to heal his tree.

First we want to say we loved all the brightly colored pictures in the story. The book is like a beautiful rainbow, and the main character of the book looks and acts very silly.

When we were reading the story it had a feel of the Wizard of Oz but not to the Emerald City, to the moon instead. My sister and I liked how the storyline had funny rhymes and unusual pictures and characters.

Our favorite character in the story was the Moon Queen, she looked like a silver ballerina up in the clouds. We only wished that the story spent more time in this world, because it was like a moon wonderland. In this world there were crystals all over the ground and the sky had polka dots and stripes. We liked how the author added a talking table to help Clyde get to the Moon Queen.

Our favorite part of the story was when Clyde drank from the bottle to get big and went up into the clouds to talk to the Moon Queen. My sister and I thought it would have been neat if the story took you inside of her castle in the clouds to look around.

“King of the Moon” by Mr. Kind is a fun story my sister and I enjoyed. It is a short story but full of adventure, and with likable characters. I think the readers would have enjoyed it if Sam the tree could have talked, or there were more creatures Clyde could have met on the moon.

This is a great book for early readers, because the pictures are so fun, and the words are easy to sound out. We enjoyed “King of the Moon” by Mr. Kind and look forward to more books by this author.
