I was so happy to get the latest volume of my current favorite manga from the library, but then I was shocked and saddened to see "final volume" on the back cover. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

All I really needed to see was the inside of the front and back covers to be ecstatic. The rest of the book was fine -- there was plenty to squee about -- but those two images just sum up the whole series for me.

Well, now I'm back on the hunt for a new stupid fun shojo . . .

Chef's kiss for the final volume of this lovely series! 🤌

It's peak volume of Tomo and Jun's ship. I love the final attempt to sucker-punch the readers, I was gloriously frustrated, lol. Tomo was all out, getting this honeymoon phase glow desperately wanting for a kiss only to be rejected because of a certain reason. Augh! I love them so much!

I was kind of hoping for the Tanabe and Gundou ship to finally sail, though.

In which it turns out that Tomo-chan was a girl the entire time.

A cute ending for a cute series. We knew from last volume that Jun had finally decided to pull his head out of his ass, but there are still a couple more obstacles in the way before these two kids kick things up a notch.

Just what happens as friends go from being friends to something more? That’s the big query at the heart of this volume and I do give this series a lot of credit for staying very true to itself up to the bitter end.

There are ways to answer the above question and there are the specific ways these characters would answer this question and the book smartly leans into the latter wholesale, accompanied by some fun bits and a lot of shojo sparkles (one of my favorite runners in this volume is how characters are drawn MUCH cuter than usual when the sparkles are out).

Outside of the last obstacle in Jun’s way, which is a bit silly (and which Tomo rightly berates him for not mentioning), this is a satisfying conclusion with some decent gags, a welcome bonus chapter, and a very on-brand first kiss.

I do wish there had been a smidgen more closure. Make no mistake, your Jun/Tomo needs are being served here, but they weren’t the only people around - Carol and Misuzu have carried the series just as much, if not more.

You could argue that Carol got most of her storyline resolved in volume 6 (ironically when Misuzu got very unpalatable), but there’s just so little else BUT Jun/Tomo here. Given how complex she was, I’d have liked to see more done with Misuzu at the end. For the rest, I especially missed one last appearance of the gyaru girls who were often hanging out on the periphery of things.

3.5 stars, which is pretty much where I would leave this series as a whole. It was fairly amusing and had some very funny moments but was far from perfect. Rounding down this time because of a couple story issues, plus the fact that it’s simply not as consistently humorous as the last volume.

This manga just hit the spot for me. It was hilarious, cute and had an important friendship aspect (I mean, I still think Misuzu and Tomo are goals so...) . Plus, I think all characters were well developed in the curse of the story and I was able to connect with their feelings and sometimes even identify with them.

The daily slice-of-life adventures of a fiery martial artist tomboy named Tomo, her goth ice-queen friend Misuzu, and her chaotically sporadic friend Carol. It mostly revolves around Tomo balancing her masculine personality and interests with her growing sense of femininity, her wacky antics with her two best friends, her embarrassingly awkward attempts at romance with her childhood crush Jun, and failing hilariously at trying to accomplish basic normal people things because of her rockheaded straightforwardness.

I definitely wasn’t expecting to rate this series so highly when I first started reading it out of the blue. It’s not a masterpiece of amazing storytelling or anything, but it turned out to be way better than it had any right to be just based on sheer fun factor. The comedy, romance and friendship dynamics are hilarious, wholesome and enjoyable from beginning to end.

The romance is mostly just a nice little cherry on top instead of being the central focus of the whole story. What really makes this series so good is the crazy antics between Tomo and her two best friends; Misuzo being the devil on her shoulder and Carol being the angel on her shoulder. Misuzo reminds me a lot of Wednesday Adams while Carol reminds me of Luna Lovegood.
The way their three personalities constantly clash and complement each other at the same time led to some brilliantly goofy and sweet moments.
A lot of the humor in the series is also surprisingly clever and subtle, making use of facial expressions, imagery and body language to deliver the punchline of a joke rather than just delivering it verbally. The chapters only being four panels each also helps with the precise and witty delivery.

On top of that, the romance between Tomo and her childhood friend Jun is just genuinely great. They’re both a couple of dopey athletic muscle heads who have treated each other like bros since they were kids and now convey their true feelings toward each other in adorably awkward ways. The dynamics between all the characters just worked really well.

A romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by people who don’t even normally like romantic comedies.

My rating: 4.3/5

I honestly like everything about this manga, except for the main romance. I love the comedy and the friendship between the girls, especially how each one has a personality that isn’t solely defined by liking someone. However, I can’t stand the romantic development of the main couple—it’s immature and borders on childish. On top of that, there’s no real chemistry between them. Ironically, I feel that a romantic development between Jun and Misuzu would have had more depth and chemistry 🙃. The only romance I genuinely enjoy is that of the secondary couple, where I found much more care and emotion in its portrayal.

Note for those considering reading it:
This manga is worth reading for the comedy and the friendship between the characters. Even if the synopsis draws you in, trust me—it won’t be the main reason you stick around.

The first time I read it I loved it and I have all the books physical like I usually do. Second time read it I still love it and I'm so excited to watch the the show like I'm so excited. It's such a cute little high school Slice of Life romance manga if you're in too long and you're into Slice of Life is the perfect little pickup it's doesn't have what most people recall fan service thank goodness. If you like h o r i m i y a then you would love this short story cute little high school Romance and it's a slow burn too if you're into slow Burns and it's a strong female lead character her little group of friends they are strong females and it's just it's so good you have to read it.

As near a flawless ending as the series could have had. It hits every mark and wraps up every ongoing plot exquisitely without feeling rushed. After the pseudo cliffhanger at the end of volume seven I knew the ending would be phenomenal but it surpassed all my expectations. A grand conclusion to a fantastic series.

Alas, all quirky romantic comedies must come to an end. In TOMO-CHAN IS A GIRL! #8, readers will encounter roughly everything one expects from the wild-eyed and frequently flustered tomboy Tomo as she navigates the final stretch of emotional turbulence regarding her relationship with Junichiro. Tomo is eager. Tomo is reticent. Tomo is worried. Tomo is ambitious. Tomo is romantic. Tomo is overconfident. Tomo is happy.

The only real drama in this manga's closing volume rests in how Misuzu Gundou makes a conscious effort to resolve her guilt over accidentally convincing Tomo she needed to be someone she is not so as to find true love. Misuzu's efforts are duly rewarded, but it's worth noting both Tomo and Carol see and recognize the young stoic's efforts merely as another glimpse of a best friend doing what best friends do (meaning well but screwing up). Misuzu hates herself. And yet, absolutely nobody hates Misuzu. This is the most understated subplot of the whole manga, and it's a damn shame Misuzu herself doesn't find the happiness she longs for ("Love's great. Even if you cling to someone, cry on them, make a fuss, they'll understand. I'd like that for me, but . . . my feelings are incomprehensible."). Tanabe, sadly, is again relegated to background-character status.

TOMO-CHAN IS A GIRL! #8 pulls readers back and forth, between Jun's idiotic attempts to be a more caring male partner and Tomo's bubbly anxiety for how lucky she is to get what she wants out of life. There's little actual conflict in the way the two teenagers finally gravitate toward one another, but the journey, as expected, is full of awkward pauses, flying fists, and a friendly if somewhat surprisingly heavy-handed intervention from Tomo's parents.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl!, however much it bridges or supersedes the yonkoma format, is an exquisite manga. The characters are highlight inimitable, the writing is consistent, and the author's sense of humor is direct and unequivocal. It's a fun comic. Romantic comedies too often forget there's supposed to be humor in romance (as opposed to merely believing relationships can be funny, apart from being romantic). Fortunately, Tomo-chan Is a Girl! sets its sights on its characters' awkward ambitions and never gives it a second thought.

Finished reading everything in 2 days! Tomo and Jun’s friends to lovers story was a such a breath of fresh air. It was really sweet and their development and dedication to each other was amazing. I loved how they finally realized they could be friends, rivals, and lovers altogether. In fact, their friendship was the best part of the series and thinking about how far Tomo and Jun have gone since the span of their friendship makes you really cheer for them. They truly are best friends, even more-so than Tomo’s friendships with Misuzu and Carol. Those two were just so underhanded throughout the entirety of the series, and I get it, but it still didn’t sit right with me sometimes. Honestly, some of their actions were upsetting, and I was sitting there wondering why Tomo tolerated it so much, but I get it because they’re teenage girls. Apparently teenage girls are petty like Misuzu and Carol. Most people found them cute, but I just didn’t and that almost made me drop the rating to 4 stars. Nevertheless, it’s fine because that sweet ending with Tomo and Jun really saved the day and I can’t stop gushing over them as a couple.

Okay okay, there are actually some things that annoyed me about this series, the main things being how tomo and jun are so stupid, but that is completely overshadowed by how well these characters are written, as well as the beautiful artwork!!!

This manga plays out less like a traditional manga and more like a series of skits with an overlying plot, but I actually really liked that, cause it gave a lot of time to each character even if they weren't the protagonists, and this is really where the manga shines.

Even though tomo and jun are dumb as hell sometimes, they have good character development and are just adorable by nature. This is also a really funny manga. Like, I laughed ot loud multiple times. It just has alot of charm to it. This is something ill probably go back to when I just want to smile or feel good. The author does a great job at making the reader feel like they're part of the group!

You'll love this if typical shojou manga tropes are what you're into.

This is about a teen girl who loves competition, fighting, sports, and other things of the sort. She's very pretty but because of the way she dresses and her personality she's often confused for a guy. 🤷‍♀️ she also happens to have a crush on her guy best friend. She confesses and it kind of back fires. Not giving up after her failed attempt she vows to make her bff see her as a woman!

I like the main female lead. I had a crush on her by the end of this series.

I would have probably given this a higher rating if the main guy wasn't so dense. Or if one of my most hated shojou manga tropes wasn't used. (The accidental kiss\boob grab\PDA with another random girl that isn't the main girl happens. 🙄) Or if more of the actual relationship was explored and not just the getting there part.

Wow! What a great series!

I finally got around to reading Tomo-Chan is a girl, and plowed through the entire series on my manga-reader app. So glad that I did. This book was funny, ridiculous, and so full of heart. It made me smile, laugh, and even get a little nervous. Instead of just writing a straight romance, there were so many little subplots mixed in, and all of the background characters were interesting and funny. There were lots of plot twists and little surprises that I didn't see coming. It was just a good series.

I loved that everything was told through four-panel comics. It made the story more interesting, and easier to read, since I could dive in and enjoy each little chunk.

Highly recommended.

A fitting end to a fun little story.

I'm sad that it's over after only 8 volumes. I really have enjoyed it. Tomo is my kind of girl. I like my girls sassy, tough as nails, able to fight, and aren't afraid to get dirty. Yep, I love Tomboys. Why? The World may never know. I was raised & still live in an upper class white-collar world, yet down & dirty blue-collar tough girls are what make me smile. Love is funny that way. I'm glad they finally got together, & with the blessing of Tomo's parents. Nice to see them kiss, something she's waited 10 years for. Good for you, girl! Go get him! Art, very good. Dialogue, very real, very true. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable, adorable.

Overall series rating 4.5⭐️
Tomo-chan is a tomboy and all she wants is for her best friend (the boy she has a crush on) to see her as an girl and not one of the guys.
At first I did not think I was going to love this but after the 2nd volume I was invested to see how the story would play out. The characters are so charming and funny and they really make the story. Overall the plot is very sweet and a coming of age sort of vibe as Tomo-chan comes to realise she doesn’t need to change who she is for the boy she likes to like her back. ALSO no random red flags or weird plot points, it’s just fun and sweet story.
This is a great series (only 8 volumes) if you’re looking for a fun romcom to fall into and enjoy yourself.

More of a 3.5 star rating;
A cute and wholesome ending to a cute and short manga series.
That said, I am very confused on Misuzu’s behavior regarding Tomo-chan. I know it was stated in the manga that she was just really opposed to the changing of their relationships along with being left behind, but a part of me feels like there were more romantic feelings involved. To me, Misuzu seemed secretly in love with Tomo-chan but saw Tomo & Jun’s connection then chose to be the supportive friend. But then again this could just be me overthinking along with some wishful thinking.

Chapters 876-954 completed!

If you haven't read the last volumes. Do it. This was very well written with complex characters and lovely storylines. All the arcs build character not just for the main characters but also all of the supporting ones. My only wish at this point is to get another 900+ chapters for the after-story. Tomo and Jun I wish them the best of luck and many happy years of rivalry, friendship and finally being lovers! Thank you Fumita Yanagida for all your hard work and years working on this absolute masterpiece! I can't wait to see how it will be adapted!

The last volume of Tomo-chan is a Girl! It made me cry because the two of them are finally hitting off as boyfriend and girlfriend but Jun needs to fight Tomo's Dad to become lovers. I like how it ended like no rush and no stress from the author. Again, the characters journey is already done and I'll read it again next time. I wish it'll have a sequel or spinoff to see the characters having kids and stuff.

Fave parts:
-Tomo and Jun kissing.
-Misuzu telling Tomo that be true to yourself and never change.
-The Valentine's chocolates and Misuzu getting drunk hehe.

Noooo it's over?!!!
I want to read more about Misuzu-chan, Tomo, Carol and even Jun and karate senpai. Ah, I love these characters so much, and it's been such a great ride.
The dynamic of the characters are so good. I especially loved how the girl trio evolved. And if love to see them make this series into a tv show or a movie, but the acting had better be excellent haha

Read all 8 volumes in one sitting if that tells you anything about how much I loved it! All the characters are so well developed and compliment each other so well. I genuinely laughed out loud for some parts. Tomo, Misuzu, and Carol are friendship goals. A feel good, adorable friends to lovers story that I’ll definitely read again!

This was a decent conclusion. I'm glad this series didn't drag on. Carol is still my favorite and wish she had more parts in the last volume, but it still made me laugh and I enjoyed it. It's a ridiculous series and it's be fun to see it animated.

I loved that it ended with the same theme as it began and that dating hasn't made the two main characters unrecognizable. Good enough that I recommended the ending to my daughter in the midst of her first "real" romance.
