Finally finished! I had high expectations for this book, especially since it comes highly recommended in my feed. However, it proved to be quite a challenge to get through, not only due to its substantial length of over 1000+ pages but also because I struggled to maintain interest as I progressed. I admit I even considered giving up when I was about 60% through. Nevertheless, I persevered and managed to read it till the end, though I did end up skimming through the last part.
The concept of the book is undeniably superb, but unfortunately, the flow of the story felt dragging at times. There were certain scenes that could have been omitted, as they did little to contribute to the overall narrative and only added to my occasional boredom.
I dunno but I cannot emotionally connect to the characters, to the main leads (I tried, I really tried) but the supposedly "kilig" moments is kinda forced. Maybe bcs the story wherein they developed for each other is kinda off. The flow is kinda off. Like, awkwardly developed.
Moreover, the excessive and unnecessary deaths throughout the story felt unrealistic and unreasonable.
On a positive note, the twist in the last part did leave a sad impression.
In summary, I would describe the book as just okay.
Romance aside, this is such an interesting read. Felt like I was Carmelita watching how things unfolded. Marks how great and effective the narrations were.
Given that this was loosely based on Philippines history during the colonial period, I wish they had this in my AP Philippine History classes.
Napakahusay ng manunulat. Damang dama ko ang mga pangyayari sa librong ito. Simula palang sa unang libro, hindi ko na kayang ibaba pa ang istoryang ito
The book was not well executed, and was poorly written. The months and days are not mentioned in the story therefore we have no way of knowing just how far along are we in the one-year quest or mission of Carmela.
I also noticed that the story was very fast-paced in this one. Parts or, should I say, the days in the storytelling are not concluded properly. The author just jumps or skips into the next day after something happens.
Also, by the middle of the book, a lot of things are happening continuously and all at once. *SPOILER ALERT* First, Juanito and Helena were seen together and discovered by Montecarlos family. And their Oplan Tigil Kasal was discovered. Then comes the confrontation scene of Carmela and Helena. Next day, Carmela comes to see Juanito, and immediately after that, the Alfonso family was framed of being rebels.
There's just too much going on that my emotions for the characters, and for their crisis, can't keep up with the story. But on a positive note, by the end of the book, the climax mellowed down and I started to actually enjoy the ride of the story.
