Falling was only the beginning…

Jenna Delacroix is determined to keep her life as simple as possible. Maybe if she tries hard enough to be normal the nightmares and strange occurrences plaguing her all her life will finally recede. But then the monsters arrive—and with them, the man who says he’s her protector.

Lonely and disciplined, Michael Gabon is just a grunt in the Legion’s endless war, but now he’s stumbled across something special—a living, breathing Incorruptible, the first one he’s seen in more decades than he can count. She’s also being hunted. And now, so is he.

On the run without backup, the diaboli haunting their trail, their only hope is working together. Even that might not be enough, because the unclean seem to know more than they should. Whether it’s treachery or bad luck doesn’t matter to Michael. The only thing he cares about is seeing his Incorruptible safe…

…no matter who–or what–he has to kill.

But seriously.... where DID the feathers come from?

Like I can figure it out, but I'd rather not have the Inception... did the damn top wobble and fall ... or not answer. 😅

I don’t know how many times she can write, rinse and repeat the same story. If you have read The Demon's Librarian you have already read this plot. And the heroine is again recycled meat. And rotten meat at that. I despised her at times, she’s weak, she’s stupid, she’s useless. And a “woe is me” - “everything is my fault” is simply a different name for an egotistical jerk. No, the world doesn’t revolve around your life, get real.

I wonder how many books she’ll write (and makes us pay) as a cheap therapy. I don’t know if she’s been a victim of violence (or maybe a witness), but I strongly suspect it from hints on her blogs. And as I said before, for how much I emphatise I can’t stand it anymore. Mostly because this type of heroines doesn’t ever really stop being victims, it’s just their situation that improved.

As usual her writing is great and the reason keep trying.

As a romance reader, many of the male leads tend to be the alpha, take control, overwhelming attractive sort that fantasies are made up of.

But what about the male leads that stand by your side as a shield, cares without overwhelming, loves without demanding?

Micheal, a grunt legionaire, left for decades with no mission but to hold the line alone and forgotten , finds the last incorruptible female, Jenna, the source of their powers. But Jenna has had a hard life, orphaned at a young age, beaten and abused by an ex-convict boyfriend and tired and alone.

This was a surprisingly heartwarming story of two world weary characters fighting against monstrous demons as they make their way to safety. Surprisingly, the actions scenes were very descriptive and realistic.

What really made the story was how honorable and kind Michael was.

Gosh. What a delightful roadtrip and exploration of two characters learning to love each other. The book takes the classic dynamic of two strangers forced into a life and death situation which leads them to fall in love and plays it perfectly straight to my delight.

Jenna is that classic cliche as well: she's special, and has been all her life. She's a living font of magical power, called an Incorruptible. She's also a waitress at a cheap diner, she has emotional scars miles wide thanks to her abusive ex-boyfriend, and she doesn't know a thing about supernatural stuff.

Michael, meanwhile, is an angel. He's an immortal soldier deployed to patrol Earth, kill demons, find Incorruptibles, and keep them safe. Angel isn't entirely accurate as this isn't the classic Christian angel/demon thing - the author based the setup on the Cathars. So, more strictly, Michael is a Legionnaire, a grunt in a holy army. He's been staked out in this city for centuries, alone and watching for evil.

Then one day they meet, and within a week demons attack the diner, and the roadtrip begins: to Michael's surprise, the only safe Legionnaire base is located in Los Angeles and he's on the east coast of the US, so off they go.

Now, mind you, the book isn't strictly about the supernatural stuff. The book doesn't skip the roadtrip and get them to LA and then go onto a bigger plot, no. It keeps the focus tight and personal as Jenna first thinks she's hallucinating, then that she's being kidnapped (which, honestly, she is), and then careful acceptance as demons keep popping up and trying to kill her. There's also Jenna's slow realization that Mike isn't like her ex, he's not going to snap at her and hurt her, and the slow evolution of their relationship got me right in the gut.

Mike, on the other hand, gets his own set of alternating pov chapters with Jenna and you get to see just how lost and confused he is. He has no idea how to talk to a woman outside of formalities. He's completely head over heels in love with her and can't handle it. He's also desperately concerned with the question of keeping her safe when he can't call for backup, and he really grew on me. He's so gentle, so...ideal.

This book is so indulgent if you're in the mood for a good romance, because the way it unfolds is just so... /contented sigh

Which means, alas, I must address the one flaw with this book. The entire storyline is wrapped around the romance, and by the time the roadtrip is over, book does a few quick bits to conclude the plot and it's done. It's not rushed, don't get me wrong - I loved the finale and how it shook out - but it felt like this was when the book would radically change gears and open up into a larger plot. But it didn't. Just as the world-building unfolded and got me intrigued in it, Jenna and Mike's arc came to a satisfying conclusion and the book ended.

In a perfect world, this book would have sold like hotcakes and we would've gotten a series of sequels exploring all the ramifications (hopefully with the classic PNR tradition of each book advancing the plot while being centered around a hot couple) ... but it didn't, and this is all you get. Which is still a five star PNR with a delightful romance and great action and a satisfying conclusion. I'm just greedy, and want more. Alas.

A Stand-alone Novel by Master Story Teller Lilith Saintcrow

Legion, fallen to the mud, Earth, who's job, mission and purpose is to protect Incorruptibles. Those individuals filled with the principle of grace. Someone just being around makes you smile more, feel warm and just want to be in their presence. The Legion, the grunts of the battlefield between the unclean and the Incorruptible, Jenna had no idea what any of those words meant when these men, sort if start to crush her fellow diner waitresses head, snap her bones with just a press of their clawed hands and razor sharp teeth. Weren't they just guys a minute ago? When suddenly the new cook leaps to her protection faster than the eye can see and begins battling them all while protecting her. He's now taking her away from her diner workplace leaving all the dead bodies behind talking of her being the Lumina and he would protect her. Was she being kidnapped now? She was already hiding from an abusive ex boyfriend who was let out of prison way too early. Grace? She's a waitress for goodness sake. Where was he taking her and why weren't they waiting for the police? A cross country road trip in an old pickup with her protector or kidnapper. She wasn't sure which only that she was scared to death and powerless to resist. Those things were just people, right? Unclean he called them. Say what's this now? Follow the story as Michael Gabron Legionairre attempts to protect, pacify and safe guard potentially the last Incorruptible on Earth and take her to safety if they both weren't killed by these demons along the path.

This was a good book! Not enough spice for my typical preference but the journey of Michael and Jenna was entertaining.

He’s a lonely lost soldier and she’s a woman who’s has had a life of bad luck and tragedy. In a world full of evil together they are the light in the dark. His one purpose is to protect her and get her to safety. All along the journey they are met with trial after trial.

Set in modern era, this road trip, strangers to friends on a quest to save her, and others like him.

I can definitely see similarities from TDL from the first few chapters, but it has greater resemblance to The Watchers' series later on.

I didn't feel much chemistry between the two lead characters. They were okay, story was easy to read through but not as compelling or gritty as LSC's other works.

It has the potential to be a series but tbh, it would be going down the path of The Watchers' series in terms of storyline. Better to have this as a standalone instead.

Awesome

I love these stories. This one reminds me of her series with Theo and Mari and Caro and the rest. A desperate road trip hunting for safety. Loved Michael and Jenna, and I really hope there’s more story coming.

Battle between good & evil comes down to saving a waitress. I didn't know that I needed this paranormal urban fantasy but I did. Good story. Good characters. Small cast.

This was a great book, I'm sorry it's a stand alone!

This was an original take on an old story. The author did well skimming along Christian mythology, while still creating an original tale. I enjoyed the idea that there are a few people running around who can't be corrupted by evil because they hold a part of the Principle.

I loved the descriptions of the angel type characters and how she melded the Christian terminology to the ranks of the Legionnaires. The world was well formed and realistic. The demons were scary and dangerous, the Legionnaires were also. Michael was appropriately strong and capable if a little naive for his great age; although it fit him as he was basically an angel in waiting.

Jenn was capable, although scared and somewhat timid--it fit her life of someone who had been abused and was hiding from her ex. She wasn't stupid or vapid which is a nice change (even though the author could easily have taken her there because of her past).

Overall it was a great, fast read in the paranormal romance category. Well worth it for a great escape read!

The worldbuilding was interesting; I like the attention to detail when it comes to developing the various levels in the hierarchy of the angelic host. I didn't particularly care for the female protagonist, though I do appreciate what Saintcrow was doing with the character. I think maybe this just isn't my cuppa where genre is concerned; that doesn't mean this novel won't hit the spot for a lot of other readers.

On the line between PNR/UF. The setup (girl with powers, badass guardian hero) is a little familiar (cuz I've been reading a LOT of Saintcrow, including titles from over a decade ago LOL) but the characters' uniqueness made for a satisfyingly different story. Michael is SO deferential and Jenna's last boyfriend was abusive and she has all these emotional flinches, that it's a miracle they ever kiss. Strong pacing.
