THE STORY

Lieutenant Kage of the 13th Penal Legion is dead, his charred remains lost to the depths of a fiery chasm. But as his battalion – the Last Chancers – mourns, a new hero rises from the ashes. The Burned Man. Kage’s miraculous survival attracts a cult of desperate followers, who believe him sent to the ork-infested world of Armageddon by the God-Emperor Himself. However, the rampaging greenskins are not the only threat to his new life. The ruthless Colonel Schaeffer, his former commander, has seen through his ploy and will stop at nothing to bring his errant charge to justice… Yet unbeknownst to both men, darker powers yearn to see Armageddon bathed and bound in blood. Kage and Schaeffer must put the ghosts of their past aside and unite, or see the Emperor’s Light forevermore extinguished upon this tortured world.

Eh, 2.5 stars (and another bit of whining for half stars which will never appear)

It was.... ok. Read the first 3 ages ago and they were decent pulpy romps. This one felt weirdly forced and clunky and mostly as a vehicle to justify more books given how the #3 ended. Lots of "Oh but wait there's more." along with an awkward redemption arc that isn't and just feels weird given the path and ending of the original trilogy.

But hey, if you've got a Warhammer 40k itch that needs some scratching, it'll do in a pinch.

Well, I got exactly what I expected.

I read the Last Chancers books in high school when I didn't know any better. And after a text from a friend this week, I picked up Armageddon Saint.

Well, the series continued one theme. That of diminishing returns. My thoughts on book three were "well, at least the main character's now dead."

How foolish I was. After a lava bath, he's back. With no character development beyond survivor's guilt (it's as if he knows the book shouldn't be), meandering through a plot that goes nowhere, with a finale designed to do one thing. Make the fifth and sixth book possible.

"One thing's for sure. The galaxy definitely needs the Last Chancers."

Does it though? Really?

Unexpectedly came across this one. Did not expect a sequel to the previous three, so picked it up thinking it would be something inbetween the established start and end points. But no, it was a true sequel that aligns nicely with the 'Current' state of the time line. Nice little branch off points to develop possible other novels too should it come to pass. The Ork insight bits were great.
