Arkady Strugatsky was born 25 August 1925 in Batumi; the family later moved to Leningrad. In January 1942, Arkady and his father were evacuated from the Siege of Leningrad, but Arkady was the only survivor in his train car; his father died upon reaching Vologda. Arkady was drafted into the Soviet army in 1943. He trained first at the artillery school in Aktyubinsk and later at the Military Institute of Foreign Languages in Moscow, from which he graduated in 1949 as an interpreter of English and Japanese. He worked as a teacher and interpreter for the military until 1955. In 1955, he began working as an editor and writer.
In 1958, he began collaborating with his brother Boris, a collaboration that lasted until Arkady's death on 12 October 1991. Arkady Strugatsky became a member of the Union of Soviet Writers in 1964. In addition to his own writing, he translated Japanese language short stories and novels, as well as some English works with his brother.

This is the second SF novel by Strugatsky brothers, originally published in 1960. It takes bother the characters from their first novel Страна багровых туч, and the idea of ordinary workers in space (instead of more common then brave pioneers) and like Alexandre Dumas with The Three Musketeers, shifts a story ten years after the first.
The usage of photon rockets becomes more common and Bykov from the first book is now a captain of long-distance hauler ‘Tahmasib’. There is a trouble of the fifth satellite of Jupiter, Almatea: they send their food rations to Callisto (another satellite) because there a native life form (some kind of fungus) destroyed all their food and chloroform plantations. Bykov is sent with food supplies to help Almatea.
As the ship goes near Jupiter, it is bombarded by debris and is stranded, slowly falling into the giant planet.
The book is interested in few ways. Firstly, it is a naïve communist future, where problems of everyday life are over, but there are still a lot of dangers outside the Earth and a lot of young heroes willing to risk. Secondly, the ‘normalcy’ of ship equipment: they use pillows when g is up, instruments break much easier than people. Thirdly, on meta-level it is interesting in that originally it was intended as a first Soviet SF story with space pirates, but censors banned any attempt ‘to militarize space’ so instead we get a fight with Jupiter gravity.

Хорошая, правильная фантастика. Лучшей похвалы, чем "будто и не в СССР написано" найти не могу.

Как и первая книга этого цикла, она была наполнена захватывающий событиями, а не большой размер не дал заскучать.

Երրորդ գիրքն է, որ կարդում եմ, ու ոչինչ: Պարզապես գիտաֆանտաստիկ, ու ավելի շատ ֆանտաստիկ, քանի գիտա, պատմություն:

Продолжение "Страна багровых туч". Творение вызвало двоякое чувство. С одной стороны непонятно зачем оно было нужно, но бог с ним. Но с другой стороны, показана, хоть и в общих чертах, грубо, история персонажей через 10 лет после эспедиции на Венеру.
Интересно, что в этот раз, в принципе, происходит всё тоже самое, но быстрее и (может) не настолько мрачно. И финал здесь намного более счастливый с точки зрения героев.

Short novel about struggles of the ship going to the Jupiter moon, inhabited by few dozens scientists, delivering the food they badly need. Quite mundane, comparing to their other books, almost if it's written by different authors. The one thing they always do well is the characters, that are very memorable, even in a such short story.

Скукотища страшная. Может, физикам это и интересно (очень много собственно фантастической физики и механики будущего), а лирикам только по диагонали - в поисках нового сюжета о приключениях любимых персонажей.

Despite its simplicity and the fact that it did not age well, 60’s sci-fi has a certain appeal. It’s still fun to read. Comical, even, in some ways.
More so, Brothers Strugatsky, are pioneers of Soviet Sci-Fi in the era where sci-fi in general as a genre was not looked at in any favorable light.
Despite all odds, Strugatsky managed to get huge levels of acclaim and their name was pretty much synonymous with “made up stories”. They owned 60’s.
Characters: 3
The story takes place on a spaceship, traveling to its destination. Everything is hunky dory. You know, everything is about to begin breaking apart when it’s all hunky dory in the first 30 pages.
Sure enough. Everything went ahead and broke.
Characters were simple, basic, yet human. They were inherently good, after the same goal, respected one another, and build an atmosphere of almost jealousy.
My jealousy that is
I wished real world was like this story. And in some cases we are, but in other cases...well, just glance at your Twitter feed.
What I though was the best part of the set up, or who rather, was Varechka. I felt infuriated, and wanting to figure out who that is. Strugatsky drew me in, and then did not give the answer. I WANTED TO KNOW THE ENTIRE TIME!!!
And then it was unveiled and I laughed non stop for quite some time.
Varechka takes the award of the best character in the story, even though...but no spoilers here. Go read!

With each chapter passing I kept waiting for the traditional way of violence. You know, things to make the text tense, like a war, monsters taking over their spaceship, some mega galactic battle they would fly in the midst of.
Spoiler alert: nada! None of that, yet it was so tense you could cut the air with a knife.
That’s good story telling right there.
Although, I do have to note that someone reading a paper book on the way to Venus in a spaceship feels...not right. Funny though. Almost as funny as a space ship captain writing crossword puzzle with a small pencil, but alas, it was the 60’s!
Setting: 4
What I find interesting in particular is that our aim for what kind of a society we want to be, has not changed. Despite all the tech advances since the 60’s, we remain much the same as people.
We’re still after the same goal as a society. Get out in space, colonize other planets, find alien life, and, oh, by the way, we have naturally reached complete peace as a civilization.
Right. Some dreams remain dreams when not everyone believes in simple things, like let’s say: global warming. But I digress.
If you have the means of reading this story, it is well worth the time.
I wish it was translated into English, but it is probably too late.
