Lord of the Mysteries Volume 3

Rate this book
With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, difference machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of "The Fool."

Introduction

After private detective Sherlock Moriarty uncovered the truths of his own murder and resurrection he left Backlund, setting sail to find a singing mermaid. That's how the story of the bounty hunter and crazy adventurer Gehrman Sparrow starts. Soon he will be known as the crazy adventurer who dives into danger with an exaggerated smile.

What started as supernatural investigations and turned into detective investigations now moved to pirate investigations. The focus of the first volume was the day-to-day life of a supernatural investigator in Tingen. After that followed the day-to-day life of a private detective in the Loen Kingdom's capital, Backlund. Now it follows the story of the dangerous and famous life of a bounty hunter and crazy adventurer in the Sonia Sea. I enjoy the variety in this story so far quite a lot. Even the endings differ from each other.

Plot

Silently chaotic ending
This volume focuses on the treasure-hunting expeditions, travels and explorations while seafaring. I realised only at the end that this volume had a silent and subtle way of showing Klein Moretti's character growth. The other two volumes were loud and tense. Klein Moretti silently acknowledges his new powers. He transitioned from the helpless victim to the fearful hunter. Though I miss the high-stakes drama and tragic ending of the first volume in Tingen city. Volume 3 didn't end with a twist or bang. It ended with a silent yet powerful retreat.

Criticism
The only part in the plot that bothered me in this volume was how the plot progression had the least development. Compared to the previous volumes the pacing felt slower and the plot more episodic. Almost as if nothing significant happened. That doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy watching Gehrman Sparrow's adventures and his pirate huntings.

Klein Moretti's character growth
I still give this volume 5 stars 'cause I love how Klein Moretti developed from a passive to an active fighter in battles. He can now even survive battles against demigods thanks to his successful digestions of his Sequence pathway potions.

Characters

Gehrman Sparrow
That's basic courtesy

Gehrman Sparrow is a new bounty hunter and adventurer who quickly becomes famous for killing powerful pirates in a way only a madman would do. I find it fascinating how big of a contrast he is to Sherlock Moriarty and Klein Moretti. His desire to kill is monstrous and his gaze unfathomable. Klein Moretti and Sherlock Moriarty would prepare beforehand but Gehrman Sparrow would leap into action almost always immediately. What makes him so terrifying is that he's concealing his true powers and is able to appear calm and kind at first glance. He's a true madman.
I've always been very polite, even if I'm facing prey

Cattleya
The Admiral of Stars appeared to be a ruthless pirate. She kinda is, but not really. Her attitude has an arrogant scent, so when she was humbled in front of many others I felt Schadenfreude. She could have been an amazing character, but her attitude ruined it. It looks like she's going to develop for the better, so let's see where that goes.

Outroduction

This didn't end in a loud bang or tragedy, but I like it nevertheless. It sacrifices the previous high-stakes tension, but I think it's time to move forward. Klein Moretti is growing, so must the story.

I hope the next volume is focusing more on Leonard Mitchell, 'cause this volume hinted that he was coming closer to the truth of Klein Moretti's resurrection. It's dangerous for Klein Moretti to meet Leonard Mitchell in person, but I'm curious to find out how Leonard Mitchell would react if he recognises Klein Moretti.

"Every journey has its destination"

this volume ended not in an emotional way as i've expected, unlike the first two volumes, but the ending in this volume is no doubt more intense and nerve-racking than those two in so many levels. i already expected to see an intense battle before this volume ended, but i was not ready for that kind of intense. and that battle is definitely the most chaotic battle in this series yet. it's full of chaos and it's so much fun!

klein already triggered three evil gods in a span of three volumes! in the first volume, it was the 'true creator' and his blessed organization 'aurora order'. in the second volume, it was the 'primordial demoness' and her blessed organization 'demoness sect'. and now, it was the 'mother tree of desire'/'chained god' and their blessed organization 'rose school of thought'. and all of them posed a serious threat to klein, the kind of threat that even readers could feel in their bones.

in this volume, klein moretti once again changed his identity, from being the detective sherlock moriarty who mostly stayed in the city of backlund, to being an adventurer gehrman sparrow who roamed the sea. and his change of identity isn't just on the surface level of changing his name and appearance, but also his whole personality. from being a cautious and weak but smart and gentleman detective to being a crazy and reckless adventurer. gerhman sparrow is the most opposite of klein's real personality but because he's already a sequence 6 faceless, it's definitely a must to act according to his current identity. and him being the mad adventurer added more to the fun of this volume.

KLEIN MORETTI

GEHRMAN SPARROW

another member was added to klein's tarot club and she's actually the member with the highest sequence among them and definitely more powerful than most of them, but klein continues to show his 'might' in front of them, making even the newest member bow down to him. as expected of the charlatan lol

i think i loved this a little bit more that the first two volumes, and that says a lot! there are another batch of allies and enemies introduced. there's no doubt klein chose various likeable allies outside of his tarot club, despite them having different personalities. characters like edwina edwards, blazing danitz, anderson hood, frank lee and queen mystic bernadette (i'm not sure yet if she's really an ally but it's a high possibility)

klein, aside from being a part-time 'unknown and mighty existence' mr. fool, he also acquired another godly identity as a sea god kalvetua. klein's growth was even more evident here. from 'three vs one fights' where klein is on the majority side to 'one vs three fights' where he was the one who fights alone and the three has the same level of strength as him, it's an apparent improvement, a huge but also a hard-earned leap of his strength. but despite his improvement, it's also clear that he's still far away from the level of his real enemies, which was the evil gods mentioned and their organizations

also, the plot is getting deeper and more intense. there are questions from the previous volumes that were answered here, but there are also an additional mysteries added to the pile. this series really has a huge world and i still have a lot more to discover but i'm not complaining. i even wish for more!!!

klein left the city of backlund at the end of volume 2, but he came back after months of travel at the end of volume 3. this is also the first time after volume 1 that klein would be in the same place as his siblings benson and melissa. i wonder how the author would handle that scene because i'm pretty sure klein would meet them again, though not in his klein identity. i think it would be emotional.

halfway through this volume was a complete unknown territory for me as i've already caught up with the part where i left off the first time i read this. now, the element of surprise if back. i no longer know what will happen next and that added more to my excitement! reading this is so much fun! i was literally at the edge of my seat with every fight, especially the battle at the end! i'm very much looking forward to the next volume!!!

keeping track of klein's identity

Vol. 3 has everything I love about this series—mystery, supernatural intrigue, and that slow-burn worldbuilding that keeps me hooked. Klein’s new persona, Gehrman Sparrow, is a fantastic addition, along with a few new characters who bring fresh excitement and high-stakes adventures. The mysteries of the sequences only grow deeper, and the tarot club scenes remain a highlight with their subtle power plays, coded conversations, and hints of just how much more there is out there. Overall, it’s brilliantly entertaining—on to the next!

i fear lotm is just not for me :/

i really really really wanted to love this but lotm is just not for character driven readers. there is cool stuff happening and very well done eldritch horror, but there is never any emotional depth or drive for why i should care about anyone or anything. i am so uninvested in this story

vol 3- gehrman sparrow was hilarious whenever he identifies a bounty and insta kills them i was dying. this volume was super funny, and action-packed with some great fight sequences

overall this was a 3.5ish. i do think it does what it's trying to do very well, and if you are exclusively looking for lore and world-building you'll love this, but unfortunately it just does not work for me

⛵ THE CRAZY ADVENTURER AND THE UNTAMED OCEAN: A TRIUMPH OF MARITIME HORROR ⛵

Volume 3 untethers itself from the smog of the empire and sets sail into a vast, lawless oceanic wilderness where the monsters aren't just hiding in the dark—they are ruling the waves.

“He is a crazy adventurer who hunts pirates for breakfast, but inside, he’s just a man trying to buy a ticket home.”

🐙 The Vibe Check:
Imagine the high-seas naval warfare and pirate lore of Pirates of the Caribbean combined with the sanity-shattering cosmic dread of a maritime H.P. Lovecraft tale, all starring a protagonist with the cold, lethal efficiency of John Wick. Volume 3 trades steampunk alleyways for ghost ships, ancient islands, and lawless port towns. It is a thrilling, swashbuckling, and deeply eerie oceanic odyssey.

📖 The Detailed Plot & Setting:
After the catastrophic and emotionally draining finale of the Backlund arc in Volume 2, Klein Moretti is forced to leave the capital behind. Seeking a change of scenery to digest his potions and hunt for the rare ingredients needed for Sequence 5 (Nimblewright Master), he takes to the Sonia Sea.

To navigate this brutal, pirate-infested frontier, Klein constructs his most iconic and terrifying persona yet: Gehrman Sparrow. Outwardly, Gehrman is a cold, monosyllabic, and utterly unhinged adventurer who shoots first and asks questions never—a man who hunts powerful pirates simply because they crossed his path. Inwardly, however, the narrative maintains its signature humor as Klein constantly panics over his mounting expenses, his losing battles with sea-sickness, and the ridiculous, bloodthirsty reputation he is accidentally building across the ocean.

The setting of Volume 3 is masterfully executed. The sea is not just empty space between plot points; it is a living, terrifying entity. From the lawless pirate havens like Bansy Harbor to the uncharted, cursed islands hidden deep within the fog, Cuttlefish That Loves Diving (Ai Qianshui de Wuzei) builds a rich maritime hierarchy populated by Pirate Kings, mystical Admirals, and ancient sea gods.

🔥 Deep-Dive Critical Analysis:

1. The Masterful Dual-Identity Dynamic:
The absolute highlight of Traveler is the hilarious and thrilling juxtaposition of Gehrman Sparrow's public image versus Klein’s internal monologue. To the world, Gehrman is a terrifying madman whose poker face strikes fear into the hearts of seasoned killers. To the reader, Klein is just a deeply relatable guy desperately trying to calculate his traveling budget and survive encounters with bizarre mythical entities. This comedic irony balances out the otherwise dark, Lovecraftian stakes beautifully.

2. Expansion of the Beyonder World & Global Lore:
Volume 3 heavily broadens the scope of the world's magic system. By interacting with various pirate factions—including Vice Admiral Iceberg Edwina and Admiral of Stars Cattleya—we finally get a massive info-dump regarding the alternative Pathways, ancient history, and the true geopolitical layout of the world. The Tarot Club segments also reach a new peak, as Klein utilizes his Gehrman persona to act as the real-world "executioner" for the club's members, bridging the gap between his divine identity as The Fool and his mortal struggles.

3. Episodic Pacing with a Cosmic Undercurrent:
Unlike the tightly knit urban mystery of Backlund, Volume 3 embraces an episodic, island-hopping structure. Klein moves from one voyage to the next, treating each ship and port as a localized miniature arc. While this gives the book a faster, more action-oriented feel, the author never loses sight of the overarching cosmic horror plot. Every haunted artifact Klein recovers and every ancient ruin he uncovers slowly builds toward a terrifying realization about the true nature of the gods.

✨ What Hit the Mark:

Spectacular Action Choreography: The battles in this volume are the most creative yet. Watching Klein combine his Magician tricks, Faceless illusion tactics, and mystical items against heavily armed pirate crews is incredibly satisfying.
Fascinating Nautical Lore: The world-building around the pirate admirals, their unique ships, and the mythical properties of the ocean depths is exceptionally detailed and immersive.
Gehrman Sparrow's Reputation: The running gag of Klein becoming a legendary myth of terror in the newspapers while he’s just trying to save money is peak fiction.

⚠️ A Note for the Voyage (The Critiques):

Structural Pivot: Because this book operates like an episodic travelogue, the narrative lack a single, centralized anchor-point city like Tingen or Backlund. If you dislike island-hopping structures where secondary characters frequently rotate out, the pacing might feel a bit disjointed in the middle.
Character Congestion: Introducing multiple pirate fleets, their captains, their backstories, and their specific magical abilities all at once means you will need to pay close attention to the names and faction allegiances to avoid getting lost at sea.

⭐️ THE VERDICT:

Lord of the Mysteries Vol. 3: Traveler is an absolute blast of an installment. It proves the author's incredible range, seamlessly pivoting from a Victorian detective thriller into a grand, sweeping maritime fantasy. Driven by the unmatched charm of the Gehrman Sparrow persona, this volume delivers unparalleled world-building, explosive progression, and an addictive sense of adventure.

Yeah, you read that right. Not a typo. Out of the three Lord of the Mysteries volumes I’ve read so far, this one is by far my favourite!

I won’t talk much about the other characters—let’s just focus on Gehrman Sparrow. He’s crazy, yes. Crazy Handsome Hot. Honestly, I can't stop thinking about him 24/7. Watching Klein try so hard to match this wild persona is hilarious—peak Klein content. And deep down? He’s still secretly kind.

When I first started this volume, I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it much since most of it takes place at sea. But wow—I was so wrong. This volume had me laughing almost every chapter! I loved all the chaotic new friends Klein made. Danitz, Anderson, Frank—they’re all unhinged in the best way, and I was struggling not to laugh out loud in class.

There were also little found family moments that got me right in the feels. No actual tears were shed… but my eyes did get that shiny, emotional glaze. You know the one 🥲

The last fight is the most chaotic showdown in the series so far and I love that.

And now, I’m super excited to follow Klein’s new identity: Dwayne Dantes. Because… uh… I have a thing for mysterious older guys?? HAHAHA. But also—Backlund comeback?? Let’s goooo!

Definetly my least favorite volume so far. Translation and writing overall improved, and I am enjoying all the new character interactions and Klein's new identity as Sherlock Moriarty. There were some cases he received that were extremely interesting to read, such as the adultery case. I honestly felt very engulfed in his detective work! However, I was not the biggest fan of Klein not forming at least 1 closer relationship. He was extremely isolated, which makes sense due to his trauma from earlier volumes. I think I just miss having a team and family like environment around Klein!

I also really enjoyed how the Tarot club developed, and the new members added were all very cool with good side stories.

Overall, well written and a fun read, but was not a 5/5 for me.

The beginning of it had me struggling a bit but once the initial set up plot was done I was binging it.
Although I'm not the biggest fan of stoic personalities like Gehrman Sparrow I still had a blast watching Klein struggle inside while interacting with the others. I gotta say this was the volume which introduced characters I had lots of fun reading about such as Danitz, Bernadette, Anderson oh and I mustn't forget our crazy biologist Frank lolol.
Anyways I liked most of the arcs in this volume, my Favorite had gotta be Bansy Harbor arc though, the horror was done SO WELL I LITERALLY HAD GOOSEBUMPS DUE TO THE EERIE ATMOSPHERE (minus the Grosselle's Travels one, I just could NOT give a damn about those new characters ehhe) and the pacing was good too, at times it did feel dragged but after reading 700+ chapters of this I know it in my heart that every little thing will come to play a part in the bigger picture later on.
And I must admit I have no idea what the big endgame is... Usually with stories I have hunches but with LOTM I am totally lost lol but am seated for the ride of unseen twists that come for me.

Vol 3 Traveller
The best part about this Webnovel series is the world. Its so unique with its madness based magic system and its so well thought out. The characters are hilarious as well with splashes of gothic horror throughout.
And its hilarious that the author chose generic names for the characters like western authors do for Eastern stories. You go, Cuttlefish!
