Lord of the Mysteries #4

Lord of the Mysteries Volume 4

Rate this book
With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, difference machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

Each volume just gets better than the last! Klein’s latest persona, Dwayne Dante, is both hilarious and clever, and watching him stir things up in high society is pure fun. Behind all the schemes, he’s quietly moving toward his goal—demigod status.
The Tarot Club members also continue to shine, each developing in meaningful ways—growing bolder, sharper, and more capable. New characters are introduced while familiar ones return, adding even more richness and depth to the world.
By the end of this volume, I was once again in tears. The pursuit of revenge for their captain came at a heavy cost for both Klein and Leonard, leaving the ending both satisfying and heartbreaking. I can tell things are only going to get wilder from here.

“I… Who am I?
A person whose experience as a Nighthawk deeply influenced him;
A person who played safe and was afraid of danger, but was able to persist and give up everything;
A guardian and a miserable wretch.”

i just finished volume 4 and i'm still emotional. i thought i already escaped the pattern of emotional volume ending because volume 3 broke that, but i was wrong! klein, leonard and ma'am daly finally exacted their revenge against ince zangwill, the one who killed captain dunn smith, but the high price for killing the enemy is out of their control. death is inevitable in this kind of battle but still...

my heart is heavy despite seeing klein advanced once again in his sequence, now finally entering his demigod phase. he has sacrificed so much for this, and the fact that this isn't his final destination yet and he's still far from it, it makes me so sad for him. the higher he goes in his sequence, i feel like the lonelier he becomes. though he has a lot of allies, no one can ever understand him and sincerely share his burden.

and now, additional potential enemies are starting to show themselves. they were mentioned countless times throughout the first three volumes, and now they finally appeared themselves. and they looked like a really formidable ones. on the other hand, klein still looked like a child compared to them when it comes to strength. though he finally advanced at the end of volume 4, he can only barely calls himself a demigod, and his enemies varies from saints to angels to king of angels. and their gazes are now locking into him, and it's making me more anxious.

i'm looking forward to the next volume because i can feel that there will be a lot going on and we're finally reaching the climax of the series!

I still can't believe the ending. It was so heart-rending and tragic and I don't think I will ever get over it. I wish for once, when I'm feeling bad, the book ends well.

Amazing volume as always, but obviously the most gut-wrenching end so far. Although it took a lot for them to finally exact revenge to one of the story's antagonist, it sure is worth it. Thinking in that direction, 'took a lot' can be something so grim, especially to Klein who has been walking through this world basically alone. And the performance he had to do for that end that also lead to him achieving his first step to godhood is making me think about the things he also might do for his succeeding sequences, alone. It's so sad.

“I can’t return anymore...”

The nuance of home being constantly and subtly mentioned in this volume left quite such an impression to me in forms of Emperor Roselle's, Mr. Azik, and of course, Klein's.

Klein's identity in this volume is someone who's swimming in the high society's waters in contrast to the previous volumes where he's always at the lower classes. Dwayne Dantes is such a good 'face.'

Erm, honestly I just finished the volume and I want to collect my thoughts first but I don't want to sit on it too much because I know it's better to write this fresh because I'm still literally crying. Very hilarious, exciting, and cool adventure this volumes packed for us readers. And the side storytelling about romance (Ma'am Daly Simone and Captain Dunn Smith) and others are such a treat. A lot of characters were mentioned and got their own uses and roles in this 'big performance' and we also get to meet big powerhouses that have been mentioned ever since this book started. I can't wait for more.

This volume was everything and more than I had expected. I'm still on the high of finishing this and after THAT ending my head is just an emotional mess.

I'm just gonna go through the key stuff that are highlited for me in Undying.

“Let me go. Let me go...” This scene of Klein and his split personality was just chef's kiss... The old two bedroom apartment had me reminiscing the first few days Zhou had entered this world, and looking back to it now, we have come so far like damnn...but even now with our MC as a sequence 4, he is just a singular dot compared to the number of enemies he has after him. It's scary sheesh maybe even I need to set an appointment with Audrey now ...

“The word in Chinese is:
“Home.” ” ... This was expectedly unexpected and brought me to tears along with Klein. I won't lie, in this whole book the word "home" played such an emotional role(also that ending scene with you know what)... Klein struggling with his identity then reinforcing by saying he is "A person from Earth, a person who had been reconstructed from Klein’s memory fragments;
A person whose experience as a Nighthawk deeply influenced him;
A person who played safe and was afraid of danger, but was able to persist and give up everything;
A guardian and a miserable wretch." Was just skskskksk😭😭 And Bernadette's question "Where is home?" Had me screaming like a maniac HOME IS EARTH EARTH IS HOME 😭

Other special scenes that I wanna mention are: Zaratul and the hundreds of hanging puppets, Azik and our dear Evernight Goddess, Daly and Dunn's last dance (what a beautiful yet tragic story), Ince's death and Klein's advancement to a demigod and last but not the least baffling one: the hanging puppets from Earth, I have so many theories (Headline: EARTHLINGS KIDNAPPED AFTER A RANDOM RITUAL FROM DIFFERENT ERAS, THREE EMPTY CRYO PODS, TWO CHINESE TRANSMIGRATORS, LOTS OF COINCIDENCS AND WHO WAS IN THE THIRD POD!?) and guesses for this one. I feel like a crazy scientist who's trying to connect dots lmaoo

Anyways this was an amazing volume and I enjoyed the world building for the higher echelons of society and how stark of a contrast it made with the other ones. Now I'm on my way to Red Priest

Volume 4 of Lord of the Mysteries… I’m crying. It’s so beautiful yet so painful 😭

This volume feels so different from the earlier ones. Before, we followed Klein step by step, but now Cuttlefish keeps things from us. Suddenly, boom —Klein pulls out another hidden card. Technically, he did give us the hints, but in such a sneaky, subtle way that I was too dumb to notice. It feels like he’s always one step ahead, and honestly, I love being fooled.

The Tarot Club members are all growing in their own ways, and watching them makes me so soft. Aww, my little family. And the letter exchange between Klein and Leonard… the letters themselves were fine, but the way both of them react had me giggling like a fool ehehe. Secret vibes, I swear✋🏻😆

Also… Amon keeps flooding my FYP, but he still hasn’t gotten enough time to shine. Please, when will he finally step out of the shadows for real?! *pulling hair

And that ending… oh, that ending. Painful, devastating, but also strangely beautiful. 5 stars from me, no doubt.

Now I’ve just started Volume 5 and… I can’t believe what I’m reading. My baby Klein 💔

Even if it had some slow parts in the beginning, the ending of the volume was so good!!

A lot more information in Azik, and finally, the conclusion and death of Ince, giving us some nice moments with Leonard and Daly, who had a heartbreaking end. I haven't been able to get over Dunn, and then they throw that short paragraph of Daly thinking about him! Devastating

I read it fast and enjoy it. And it tells something about quality.

But I slightly want more doom to the main character. I want him to struggle a little and it shouldn't be that easy for him. Where are his failures ?

Let's just say that the lovecraftian aspect here grows a LOT.
The final chapters of this one is worth the whole series.

“Me había consentido demasiado en el pasado. É-él era un hombre conservador. Yo-Yo me sentía inferior”.

description

description

description

There is no reason to write a post for each "volume" as I have read the whole thing as one book anyway and even the chapter separation is kind of weird, probably because of the serialized nature of the release. Well, I have good news and bad news. Good news is that I've finished this humongous novel. Bad news is that there is a sequel!! :D

The increase in level of the main protagonist goes on. Not only does he do it faster and easier - in terms of pages dedicated to the difficulty - but so do all of his friends. But there is a catch, of course. First of all the most scary antagonist by far: God of Deceit Amon. Second of all, of course there are levels above sequence 0. And I apologize if me telling you that made you instantly go insane, it's your own fault for not raising to a sufficiently high Beyonder level.

You see, not only are there gods in the world, but also gods from outside the world, encroaching in. There are some really complicated rules being applied and the final epic battle is truly epic, so I will leave it at that: I finished Lord of Mysteries and I liked it.

The second book, Circle of Inevitability, closes the story completely and also is half of the first book in terms of size. I wonder if I should be masochistic enough to start reading it as well...

I liked volume 3 more than this one for it's fast paced action, but this is maybe the most well-rounded volume in the series. It helps that you're already heavily invested if you've read to this point.

The alias klein uses in this volume is usually put at the bottom of tier lists i see, but he's maybe my favourite (they're all great, so it's hard to say for sure) it's probably just a personal preference thing rather than me finding something objectively better about him.

There's a 13 chapter stretch in this volume that had me completely unable to put the story down in a way i haven't felt before or since.

And like all volumes in this series, the ending is spectacular, this one being a definite standout. probably not in my top 3 endings of the series, but it really just stands out nonetheless.

Generational volume. Easily the best one so far, I'd rate it a solid 9.5/10. For the first time there were 0 slow/boring bits, and almost every chapter was fun to read. So many memorable moments like the ancient sun god's betrayal, Klein meeting Zaratul, Leonard solving the case/digging up Klein's grave, Adam's appearence, and of course the final fight with Ince that ended in Klein's advancement. Daly's final dance with Dunn, and Klein's development as a character was beautiful. The parallels between Roselle's "Home." message, and Klein struggling to figure out who he is, and then that plot-twist in the final chapter was phenominal. Truly a remarkable and memorable reading experience.
