This exclusive limited-edition chapbook is an illustrated, collaborative project by Cassandra Clare and Cassandra Jean that involves pairing characters of the Shadowhunter world to retell classic fairy tales through illustrations.
Original description for Classics Reimagined as follows:
"Cassandra Jean's beautiful illustrations have become an iconic part of the Shadowhunter world. In this book, we combine beloved characters from the Shadowhunter Chronicles with folk and fairy tales that both of us grew up reading. I adore these mash-ups and I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do!
Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Tehran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.
Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).
After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again. Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.
City of Bones was her first novel. Sword Catcher is her most recent novel.
I loved this little collection of reimagined fairy tales! It was interesting to see a modern spin on them and put some of my favorite characters in the roles of classic story book characters!
This review may contain SPOILERS! I'm going to keep this short and sweet. I really enjoyed the fact that Cassandra Clare and Cassandra Jean collaborated to curate this edition of a "fairytale retelling"-esque book. Essentially what this is, is a short novella-alike collection of character art, with a mixture of Shadowhunter characters, drawn in and as classical fairytale characters. I was a bit disappointed that these weren't fully fledged tales, but rather small quotes with a character art of the respective fairytale and the characters that matched the fairytale according to Cassie. It is a nice edition as a Shadowhunter-fan, such as myself, but essentially this gives little written content, and is more of a collectors addition or piece in my opinion. I still loved the artwork and the thoughts behind the reasoning of who to pick for which fairytale ... so that was brilliant! 3.5/5 stars
I'll be honest, this book wasn't quite what I was expecting.
I thought we would be receiving full story/excerpts of the reimaginings, instead it's just a line or two about the characters in that setting—a caption, their names and the story they're set in—but the art is definitely BEYOND gorgeous. 😍 I love Cassandra Jean's style so it's nice to have as a collectible.
Overall, it was touching and sweet, although I wish it had just the tad bit more substance in writing.

i was incredibly excited when i heard about this book and preordered it immediately, but i was a bit disappointed with the final product. the illustrations were beautiful, and it is a nice collectors item, but there was very little actually storytelling, only brief story snippets reworked into the shadowhunter world. i think it would have been much better had we gotten full fairytales, or maybe even just a page of the story rather than a single sentence.
I loved this! Even though it was short I loved what fairy tales each ship was based off of. And the art work was beautiful! Happy to have this in my Shadowhunter collection 😍
Beautiful illustrations by Cassandra Jean and writing by Cassandra Clare as always. It is a quick and fun read of the reinterpretation of fairytales . I recommend this to everyone.
very very short read, but i LOVED the illustrations in this so much. wish we had more than little snippets of fairytales but it was still a great addition to the shadowhunter saga :'')
Honestly one of the coolest things I've read. It's a super short read with each character taking on the role of a fairy tale or folk tale. Tessa and Will are in the story of "Cinderella," Clary and Jace are in "East of the Sun and West of the Moon," and Emma and Julian are in "Sleeping Beauty". An assortment of other characters from the Shadowhunter chronicles are in here too. Kit and Ty, Alec and Magnus, and more. I personally loved this because I love both fairy tales and the Shadowhunter chronicles. It's an amazing crossover of different stories. My copy is the preorder paperback edition and it's by far one of my favorite Shadowhunter books. ^_^
Listen, the art in this is gorgeous as always with Cassandra Jean's work. It also looks great on my shelf with the rest of the Shadowhunter books. But I will admit that I was somewhat disappointed. When I found out about the upcoming release of this work, I thought I was gonna get the actual fairytales but changed to add the Shadowhunters' characters. Instead what I got, were some (brilliant) pictures and one to max. two sentences, accompanying each page. It IS beautiful, but I am a tad sad because this isn't what I had imagined at all.
