Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
DRAGONBALL #12 was recommended to me by my grandson Devin. He likes it and says it was good. Being as he has the posters, figures, and spends many a moment on his computer playing the video game, I thought I should check it out.
According to the cover, Dragon balls are some kind of power balls, but they aren't really mentioned in this book. If they were, I missed it. Moro, a super villain, busted other evil beings out of the Galactic prison and they have come to earth to rob it of treasures and lay waste to everything else. It is up to the heroes to stop them. So all the characters go into battle using their various powers. Like the computer game, they punch and kick each other and throw in the occasional energy blast.
This paperback version reads like a comic book but is sadly lacking color. The weird thing for me was having to read this English version backwards, meaning, it was laid out like a Japanese book where you start reading up in the right hand corner of what I would consider the last page and read from right to left and on down. Although this may be a selling point for today's youth, being old and set in my ways, and spoiled by my old Thor comic books, I had a hard time reading this. That was my main problem with this book. But as I stumbled through it and looked at the pictures, I imagined Devin's character blasting away one villain after another. So how could I not like it?
Would I recommend this? Well, it is a best seller and I would have probably liked it as a kid.
At this point, his forces are travelling from planet to planet in search of large reserves of energy for him to consume. This is how they eventually reach Earth, where our heroes are already preparing to face this new threat.
It’s great to see battles on a larger scale, as it gives classic, less powerful characters the chance to take part as well.

I am beyond pleased to declare this as one of the best of the new material arcs to date! The incredible panel drawn fights scenes, the amazing new power users on both sides including one of the better Vegeta power strengthening arcs yet and makes me not only stoked for his final appearance but I think he might finally be on par once again with goku after this. 4.25/5
This volume leaves Goku and Vegeta in the background as they're both off to focus on special training with the guidance of different masters. It now focuses on other heroes going up against the Bandit Brigade, especially Seven-Three, whose powers to copy other fighters' will be key to upcoming events. While it was fun to Piccolo and friends back in action, this action-packed volume doesn't do much more than stall till it's time for the good stuff.
An ok book. I might be biased as I really hate the Gillette books. The Earth / Z fighters need to hold out until Goku and Vegeta train in the hope of defeating Moro, or are they just becoming a tastier meal. Also Merus' identity is revealed, not a big surprise really. The book is ok but is really the preliminaries, and set up to the main card. I hope the next book is not so drawn out.
As much as I have come to deeply admire certain things about Super, it remains something that should never have existed in the first place. And this volume exudes that more strongly than ever. Reviving one of the greatest stories ever told over twenty years after it ended, not a great idea. An extremely profitable one, yes, but a terrible one nonetheless. This volume is by no means bad, no it isn't, the series just does not feel fresh anymore? Barring a few moments here and there it is particularly drab, with nothing much new to offer. Didn't feel like this in the Zamasu arc, or the Multiverse arc. But I guess it is what it is, and we read on anyway!
Continues to be great, and I like it, even though the formula is the same, but to be fair I DO want and expect for something else to happen along the way.
Also, can we get a win for Vegeta for once? Like, would it be THAT bad to get him to save the day?
Now that we've had a taste of Moro, it's time to focus on his henchmen as the really powerful people get stronger before their fights. Highlights: - Yunba, Shimorekka, Seven-Three are a gang of 3 prisoners that are headed to investigate Earth. Upon arriving, they tangle with Piccolo and Krillin. 7-3 is the strongest of the bunch, for when he grabs an opponents neck, he copies their abilities for 30 minutes. When Gohan shows up, Jaco informs them that 7-3 can store up to 3 person's abilities at the same time, even though he can only use one. After being defeated by the henchmen, Moro pulls them back and begins to make the trek towards Earth himself. - Vegeta's training continues on Yardrat. He achieves harmony between his body and spirit after a long time, and his regular attacks are WAY MORE powerful. When he defeats some of Moro's henchmen who have come to this planet, the masters agree to accelerate his training so he can stand against Moro. -Goku's training with Merus continues. We find out via Whis that Merus is an angel, and Whis' brother. Angels are forbidden to take sides, so Merus leaves with Whis, making Goku find his own way home. - Two months pass, and Moro and his forces arrive on Earth. Having had time to prepare, Earth's warriors are ready and they (Piccolo, Gohan, Tien, Krillin, Yamcha, Roshi, Chiaotzu) along with a large contingent of Galactic Patrol members (including Jaco) fight against the henchmen. When Seven-Three takes both Piccolo and Gohan's abilities, all seems lost, but they prepared for it with new combo moves, as 7-3 can only one set of powers at a time.
Very excited for Volume 13! Will we get to see a completely unleashed Vegeta?
Dragon ball super actually let's the other Z warriors get a chance to shine.
Piccolo and Gohan get to really shine here as they must defend planet earth against Moro's goons. It's actually a two part fight where the first fight the Z warriors barely are able to hold them off. The second is a all out attack on earth where the Z warriors have to work together with all the planet fighters to defend. It's really entertaining to see and we also learn the truth about a few characters. A nice step up here. A 4 out of 5.
Goku And vegeta are training to get more stronger, but the convicts who escaped from the galactic prison aim to attack the earth So Gohan piccolo and the Z fighters are fighting them off. whis took The angel Who was training goku Because he was violating the angel rules so goku has to find a way to defeat moro and to find his way home.
Saganbo's Galactic Brigade consists of Yunba, Shimorekka and OG73-I or Seven-Three are on their way to Earth. Jaco managed to gather Piccolo and Krillin to join Galactic Patrol. Yunba, Shimorekka and Seven-Three suddenly appears using a portal. Seven-Three have an ability to copy someone ability by grabbing their neck. Piccolo's neck being grabbed and he fights Seven-Three. Piccolo cannot hold Seven-Three any longer and suddenly Gohan appears. Piccolo's ability wear off after 30 minutes. Seven-Three switch to Moro's abilitym he starts to absorb the life energy. Yunba and Shimorekka join the battle. Moro order them to retreat and wait for Goku and Vegeta complete their training. There will be far more energy to absorb after this. Moro and Saganbo's Galactic Brigade will come again in the next 2 months.
Another Saganbo's Galactic Brigade led by Yuzun arrived in Planet Yardrat. Vegeta easily defeats Yuzun. Yuzun and his brigade trying to escape but his ship was destroyed by his own technique. After 2 months, Goku training with Merus have ended. Whis appears and wants Merus to come back to angel realm. Merus is trainee angel and also Whis' brother. Gohan, Piccolo, Krillin, Master Roshi, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu and Yamcha gather along with the Galactic Patrol troops to fight the Saganbo's Galactic Brigade and Moro. Moro's scouting ship scattered around the world to loot the treasure before Moro absorb the life energy. Gohan and Piccolo faced Seven-Three and Shimorekka. Seven-Three managed to copy Gohan and Piccolo abilities. The duo managed to defeats Seven-Three. Seven-Three switch to Moro's ability and suddenly, Android #17 and Android #18 appears. They have no chi so they are the suitable opponent for Seven-Three.
The series is consistently good, but never really does anything amazing or groundbreaking. It would be great if this arc didnt go the same way as every arc before it, but theres a reason people come back to it - because it's always entertaining and somehow keeps you questioning how they're gonna push onward
4.75 Stars. An absolutely entertaining volume with nonstop action and a good amount of new lore. From Goku and Vegeta's new training techniques and new moves are sure to come. Yamaha doing something for the first time since the cell saga was nice to see. Jaco getting a bit humbled during the invasion of earth was a long time due and the cherry on top is easily Piccolo and Gohan showcasing their expert teamwork. An amazing volume all around but it was just missing a little bit of something I can't put my finger on to give it that fifth star.
In the previous volume a team of Galactic prisoners was captured on Earth, but they succeeded in calling for help. A new team of Galactic prisoners arrives in this volume consisting of Yunba, Shimorekka and 7-3. Especially that last one is a very interesting new character addition to the DB universe. His special ability, to copy other people’s powers is an interesting novelty. On top off that he also has infinite stamina.
Piccolo is the one to get his powers copied and takes on 7-3. Jaco fights Shimorekka and Kuririn takes on Yunba. All of them are having major difficulties to get the upper hand. Especially 7-3 seems a tough opponent. Luckily for Piccolo Gohan arrives in time to help him from a losing position. 7-3 throws everything he has at Gohan but still can’t do much against the superior strength. On top of that his 30 minutes have passed and he loses the powers he copied from Piccolo. He has no choice and goes to his back-up plan. With this 7-3 succeeds in overpowering his opponents. At that point we get an turn of events; the criminals leave Earth intact in order to come back later once Goku and Vegeta have returned. The goal of Moro is to absorb their new powers.
The next chapter focuses mainly on Vegeta and his training on the planet Yardrat. The planet is also attacked by Moro’s men but Vegeta easily takes care of them. We also get the reveal about Merus.
In the final chapter the focus is back on Earth and the arrival of Moro. Some good fighting in this chapter as well. Goku and Vegeta haven’t arrived yet so it’s up to the other DB fighters to get into it. Piccolo and Gohan immediately get a chance for a re-match. Moro himself remains at the sideline for now and is overlooking all the fights.
Conclusion: Another good addition. I especially liked the fights between Piccolo and 7-3 and Gohan against 7-3. Classical DB for me Rating: 4/5
9/10 Meru turns out to be a Angel. And he is becoming too biased so Whis is ordered by their father to take him out of the mortal realm. Vegeta is attacked while training and he proves how much stronger he got against moro’s men. Moro’s goons have a copy cat Android who copies powers. He first copied piccolos powers and put up a fight against piccolo and gohan until Moro decided to wait until goku and vegeta arrive to absorb their energy as well. The z fighters had 2 months to train when they are finally confronted by moro’s soldiers and they begin to rampage all of earth. Gohan and piccolo put up a good fight against the copy cat Android but he keeps trying to steal others energy using moro’s powers. This is where Android 17 & 18 join the fight because their energy can’t be absorbed. All the while goku is lost in space trying to find his way to earth.

This was a good volume, and I really like how we see the training continue and Piccolo vs 73 and then this villains ability and how he copies them and how fun it makes these battles and then my fav character Gohan comes in and yeah seeing him fight was so cool and made me nostalgic and yeah I love it! Its fun seeing this battle of the titans and the two continuing and you see Goku vs Merus and the latter's identity reveal as an angel and that was like.. wow! And then Vegeta getting his spirit levels up and his power levels also going higher and yeah I can't wait to see what that results in, and seems like the final battle has started and how it all connects and the way Moro at his prime will turn out to be!
Truly this manga just gets better and the scope of the battle increases and thats the great thing about it for sure!!
Really good to see the Z warriors come back, especially Gohan alongside piccolo whilst Goku and Vegeta continue training. Merus being an angel makes sense and I hope we see more of him soon. 73 was really the only interesting henchman of Moro, the rest are kinda boring and generic. 17 and 18 coming at the end was sexy, Ik there gonna fuck up 73😂. I WISH Goten and Trunks would be involved, they are literally earths strongest when they are fuzed, but can’t say I am not surprised. Overall a sexy volume with a lot of action, can’t wait to see vegeta‘s new power and Goku’sin the next volume
The third Dragon Ball wish turns out to be a deadly one! The evil (and very powerful) criminals locked up in the Galactic Prison have now been released and are causing deadly and destructive incidents across the galaxy. The villain known as Seven-Three has an amazing ability, which allows him to COPY OTHERS POWERS!!! With Goku away fighting his own battles, the front line of Earth's defense falls to Krillin and Piccolo! We also find out a big secret about Merus! But as the battle rages on...another Z Solider appears which of course has me smiling from ear to ear as I am sure it will for every Dragon Ball fan.
8/10 I’m really glad we got to see Gohan & Piccolo in action again. They aren’t written as OP as Goku or Vegeta, so there actually feels like there’s some kind of stakes to them (plus I just love the 2 of them together). 73 was an interesting opponent with a really fun, unique power. I am loving Vegeta on planet Yadrat training. I’m so tired of the god powers and angel power ups. It’s good to see Vegeta away from Goku, working on himself and focusing on techniques that don’t include changing his hair color. Interesting reveal with Merus’ true identity. It’s also nice to see the Z fighters back!
Look, the Z warriors lost this one, but it was still pretty cool seeing them try. More of this! 73 is a nice villain (and since I know what happens next now that I’m writing these reviews after reading subsequent volumes), it’s a perfect addition to the story and flows well with the next arc. It’s brilliant what they did with him/it.
Anyway, we get more training time, but finally, the battle begins. The Z warriors are doing pretty good against Moro’s troop, which I know won’t last but so far so good.
I really liked this volume, as much as I like goku and vegeta being at the front of every battle I like seeing the other z fighter's too!
The start was really good setting up the battles that was to come quite soon, then the secret of Merus is revealed! Seeing How vegeta has progressed and then the final battle on earth begins and it was nice to see a certain human z fighter actually be given another chance.... hopefully he won't die again.
