SPOILERS AHEAD

I don't know if this volume is the volume and I don't particularly care. I'm giving this one star because the only reason I dragged through all these volumes was for Mika and for Mika only and now you dare TAKE HIM AWAY FROM ME????? AFTER ALL THIS TIME??????

I hate you Kagami. With every cell in my body I hate you. How could you kill off Mika like that? And after confessing his love for Yuu I'm crying

And I'm also going to continue reading, not because I care about the shitty plot, but because there's also a Shinya I care about and I'm hoping Mika will come back as a demon as well. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Saito/Rigr has a show-down with the First (via Shinoa), Mika tries to find and rescue Yu (again), Kimizuki makes a run for it with his sister with the help of Yoichi, and Guren, at Mahiru’s urging, prepares to “betray everyone” (as he himself says) by becoming a demon. Shinya does NOT approve*! Meanwhile, Ferid is watching the conflict between his two hated progenitors, and clearly has some trick up his sleeve.

*And likely wouldn’t even if he knew why Guren was doing it, since that’s not the Guren he loves (in whatever sense you choose to interpret their relationship).

To return to the “unconvincing straight ships” point I made earlier: Guren at least doesn’t seem to outright HATE Mahiru in this one. Still, the one bit of emotional intimacy we get is him confessing to her that he’s scared - which he should be, because he’s about to do a very questionable thing at her urging! There’s also a flashback to him supposedly forming a childhood crush on her…but that’s very brief and believable mainly because of comparisons to other characters. Guren being upset he can’t protect her reminds us of Yu and Mika’s obsession with protecting each other and the way they beat themselves up if they can’t. That ONE PANEL really wouldn’t stand as “oh yeah, that’s definitely romantic love right there” on its own! But Shinya’s devotion to Guren (see below)…amazing.

Full review of anime and manga up to chapter 100 or so: https://ajungleoftales.blogspot.com/2...

Notable moments (This is starting to get kind of dark, so it is hard to call them “favorites”. Spoilers, obviously!):
- Kimizuki just trying to rescue his sister and getting stuck in a room with Saito and the First (still in Shinoa’s body) doing snarky villain talk at each other: “Who are these people?”
Saito’s actually helpful, though, telling Kimizuki to take Mirai and run to Shinjuko.
- Mika seeing the rooftop explosions caused by Saito and the First, and his reaction being: “What’s going on here?! Dammit. Whatever. I have to find Yu first.”
He pauses to “hone his senses” to try and find him…which is quite easy since the explosions woke Yu up and he is now yelling loudly, demanding to know who these cult guys are and why he’s tied up!
- Shinya talking with his demon, Byakkomaru, who points out that Shinya’s gift is to never get too emotionally involved…revealing some dark stuff in the process: “When you were bought to be a mate for Mahiru Hiragi, and when you were trained against other children in battles to the death, you survived because you never lost your cool.” But this is different! The demon tells Shinya to run, that Guren is beyond saving, but he won’t.
[B] “What makes you so obsessed with him?” [Sh] “Oh c’mon! You’re my demon. You know that!...He never gives up. It’s like he’s an idiot.” [B] “I thought you hated idiots. If you allowed yourself to be stupid even for a moment, you wouldn’t have survived…It’s as if you are in love.” While Shinya denies that, calling it “just your garden-variety idolization”…yeah, I have to wonder about that, given the parallels with the way both Mika and Shinoa think about Yu!
And that then this happens: “Come, Byakkomaru. Devour my desires…” [B] “All right. Then say it. Give name to your desire.” [Sh] “I WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON GUREN.” Followed by “I’m not going to let you leave like Mahiru did.” Interesting choice of comparison there, Shinya!
Alas…it doesn’t work, which only spells more heartbreak for some of our favorite characters, here and in future volumes.
- The demon-possessed Guren killing Kimizuki’s sister to get another “sinful key” (the cross-shaped dagger thingies)! Yoichi has to knock Kimizuki out to keep him from tackling Guren, who would clearly just kill him too. However, Guren hints that Mirai can be revived…and that he’s also keeping the body of Yoichi’s sister. Yoichi does NOT take this well. And both of them should be furious because, even if Guren needed that key to save the world, we already know that one can be gained without killing the human bearing the Seraph!
- Saito trying to use the keys to seal the First away. The keys he has aren’t quite enough, and he seems to be turning on Guren/Mahiru/Noyu (a separate demon that also inhabits Guren’s sword), but then Ferid shows up…and stabs Saito (his direct “father”) with the key Yu and Mika captured from the Seraph they and Kimizuki helped heal.

Cap 80.

Troppi plot twist! Voglio il prossimo volume!

Not full stars because I missed my beloved Mikaela and Yuichiro this time. But Ferid was amazing as always. Not to mention Guren's attractiveness. So maybe 4.25*

Things are gettin' crazier and crazier in this seres.

Okay I just read some reviews for this volume and WHY ARE PEOPLE SPOILING THE NEXT VOLUME. When you say 'spoilers ahead', the logical thing is to assume you are spoiling the volume you're reviewing, not future volumes! Am I wrong? Is this faulty to assume?

If you haven't read future chapters, don't read the reviews for Vol. 2o!! Vol. 21 is not even out in English yet, and lots of people are spilling the beans. A significant plot point happens apparently, and I am very invested in this series so spoilers are not welcome!! :(

Lots of twists and turns in this one! I’m kind of liking the aside characters like Crowley and Kureto rather than big hitters like Guren and Yuichiro.

Mostly hating/feeling confused about Guren right now- I don’t get him at all...

This series is ridiculously good, the summary 100% doesn't do it justice. It has so far surpassed my every expectation and it's been years! I love it as much as I did from day 1 still. Hence, the big review coming ahead in celebration of chapter 91 coming out very soon.

Okay, so, what's this all about you ask? Simple enough question, yet extremely difficult to answer straightforward. As the author himself says, this story starts with the story of Yuu and Mika but then it evolves into a riveting tale about politics and human relentless greed submerged in a world that seems to be pretty much on the brink of extinction. Oh, and there's plenty of supernatural elements and forces at play, with their very own agendas and motives that aren't at most times entirely clear to the reader. Some plot twists are indeed confusing, ahem the mind-fuck variety, but it all does seem to be building up to the ultimate climax where more complete explanations will clear up many whys and hows.

On an different note, while this definitely isn't a series that's focused on romance, I find myself enormously surprised by the author's decision not to shy away from recognising what's been painfully obvious from the beginning of this series regarding Mika's feelings for Yuu.

It's never not suspicious with this being a shonen manga, and with him being a man, so as much as I'd loved some scenes there was always that nagging question of whether it all was just bait to help sales. I'm glad I was wrong... at least partly (bury your gays trope is still very much a possibility and sadly commonplace, huh?)

Anyway, up to this point in time, chapter 90, I'm stupidly happy at least this step was made and Mika is, in fact, canonically in love with Yuu.

Then, of course, comes the question whether this will be serve solely as a trigger for Yuu's much needed character development. This confession was made in the most dire of scenerarios, and with Shinoa so conveniently enamoured and worried nearby... Well. A lot of Mika / Yuu scenes parallel Guren / Mahiru moments but, on their own, there's little question Yuu would be 'the new Guren' as Shinoa 'the new Mahiru'.

Personally I can see this whole situation leading up to them, Yuu and Shinoa, being the better version of Guren and Mahiru, in the end, doing things right at last and choosing each other. As for Mika, I don't think he's actually dead yet, as in completely ceased to exist, but that instead he'll become something else, be more of a presence to be summoned, rather than be physically be around Yuu and his squad 24/7.

Of course, this is pure speculation on my part. And a fairly long one at that! We'll have to wait and see, I might just be surprised again and find this was a mere glimpse at romance, and from now on the focus will be on Yuu learning to be comfortable with being by himself, being "alone" without the need to self-sacrifice on others behalf to find purpose.

Or, this all may be yet another test of Yuu and Mika's loyalty and adoration for each other, one they'll come out (deadly) stronger out of. In that case, I'll make sure to make an equally long review here gushing about their badass energy.

Together.

Only time will tell...

Oh we got a LOT of shit going down now.

The First has control of Shinoa's body and is fighting Saito, Kimizuki is trying to save his sister, Yu is trying to break free while Mika is trying to find him. Guren is turning into a demon and betraying everyone... again. Ferid is being shifty as if he has a plan. And that's what you missed on Glee.

I gotta say I don't like the chain things at all. I don't understand wtf it even is and it looks so gross. I thought it was an angel thing but then Guren started sprouting them too and eww.

I feel so bad for Guren but especially Shinya.😭 Every other minute Mahiru is like let's go demon mode!!! You know you wanna go demon mode, it's the only way to save Shinya!!! Like girl what even was the plan here? Another demon has popped out of his sword and now he got TWO in there telling him what to do smh.

It's starting to get sooo annoying because I understand he's being controlled but he still agreed to this dumbass plan and I hate disloyalty so much. I know in his mind he sees this as a necessary evil and is the only way to save Shinya and the others but damn how many times we gotta do the same damn thing?? Surely we could have brainstormed and came up with something else idk.

I will say demon Guren is very hot, I just wish he would make better choices.😔 I think my biggest beef is with Mahiru like if Mahiru has no enemies that means I am gone from this earth.

The angst though ughhhh. It got a little kick to it. Shinya's brutal backstory and his greatest desire is how he won't give up on Guren and when his demon said it was like he was in love with him??? Gagged me. My biggest annoyance of this series though gotta be

Peak comedy is Mika looking at the explosion of the First and Saito fighting in the distance and going wtf is that? Anyway where tf is Yu.😠

3.5/5. I appreciate the many character moments, including some smaller characters like Yoichi and Kimizuki when they fought Guren, but there is so much packed in and some parts are confusing with the lore.
Shit hits the fan as Guren decides it is now time to betray everyone and Saito makes his move to get to Sika Mado. Guren's been sliding to unlikable territory more and more recently as he continues his solo lobo antihero "I gotta do this to save the world" shtick. I praise Kagami for deciding to keep it straight that he knows he has to become an antihero for his friends and the world while having to hide that. I also enjoyed Saito's fight as it made me actually a bit interested in him? I still find him boring but at least now not as boring.
But again, there are some weird elements. Guren also has a second demon now? And then both Shinya and Guren become demons but they're in full control? It doesn't make sense especially when they become demons by giving into their own weapon demons which I thought just made them possessed. And we get new characters like Jigenso's wielder who even the wiki doesn't know their name and Basteya who does very little other than get introduced and then doesn't do anything.

Give me name to your desire.
Shinya: I WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON GUREN
Gruen: I will like always ... let myself drown in my own power to save you.

Intense, emotional battles explode between Guren possessed by both his demons and his former allies and friends; between the First Progenitor wearing Shinoa and the Second while Ferid Bathory plots and schemes; Yu and Mika run around, getting in and out of trouble; poor Kimizuki tries to take his sister and run with Youichi backing him up, only to end up facing tragedy. In the meantime, Krul Tepes seems to be trying to prevent something from happening involving Ashera and the volume ended with a big revelation. Everything moved so fast, it was hard to keep track of everything going on. Shinya’s moments with his demon, talking about Guren were touching amidst all the action. Once again the artwork was beautiful. I have an idea about everyone’s goals even though I’m vague about what they’re up to. All in all this didn’t disappoint and I’m eager for the next volume.

i think i'll stop reading the owari no seraph manga
1. there's so much queerbaiting
2. the author jokes about one character having a "lolita complex", so basically he joked that one of the characters is attracted to underage girls
3. the story was really good at first but imo the explaination behind everything? just not really good
4. its too fast paced, we barley got to know the characters excpet for "i have to save x, im never giving up"
5. the vampire lore is relatively lame
i would still like to read the novel about ika but everything else? ehhh

A confusing but intriguing info bomb gets dropped right at the final pages, otherwise it feels like not very much happens. Yu and Mikaela are only in a couple pages of the whole volume and do nothing of consequence, which surprised me. Some things are finally revealed, but many of them I feel could have been revealed several books ago if the major plotpoints weren't so spread out. As much as I'm happy to have found a series that goes past 5 or 6 volumes, I think this one drags its feet more than it should.
