In a follow-up to Holiday Special 2017, Esther goes for a job interview in London and reunites with her old friend Shelley Winters. While Esther covets Shelley’s metropolitan existence, Shelley is already tired of the rat race and her high pressure civil service job, and longs to publish brain-rotting books. Does anyone have any tips for what to do when the best print comedy comic series of all time is ending cause I'd sure appreciate it.

Hello, how are you? I hope you are doing okay!

I feel like this week has been flying by, I think that might be because I have been incredibly busy. I have been off of work for the most part but I have had a few appts, I am still social distancing as much as possible so when I go out for a dentist appt it feels so weird and a little tiring, a bunch of happenings are going on for my animal crossing island (this feels like huge news for me because I am still obsessed with this game), and I have some other things going on this week that just make things busier than what's been my normal lately. But the other night I picked up the next issue in of Giant Days because we all know I can not stop reading these and I am in love with this series.

SPOILERS AHEAD

In this issue we see Esther heading to her big interview. She is going to be staying in the city with an old friend. Upon her arrival Esther begins to covet her friend's life in the city however, she quickly learns that it is not always all that it appears to be. So Esther sets out to try and help her friend achieve her career dreams.

I loved this issue so much! It felt so real to things you might experience after college in a way. Trying to figure out what to do next, going on job interviews for jobs you might not even want because you know you need a job, wanting to move to a city that totally fascinates you but you are not sure if you actually can or how things would go, and just generally the whole end of college what do I do next issue. I finished graduate school about two years ago and I can totally attest that some of the issues Esther is tackling in this issue are all too real for me (even still today, looking at you the whole moving to your dream city issue). I can not wait to see what comes next for our trio!

This gives a hint of what might come, IE, how this series could continue after the trio graduates. Esther has a little publishing adventure in London while Daisy and Susan go to a spa, and I can totally relate to Susan at the spa.

Esther goes to London, stays with Shelly Winters (her “mentor & hair care icon.”), for interview in the City (at a “steaming soup of evil”); Susan & Daisy worried, so is Shelly who goes “dook, dook, dook” with a bottle of wine & who takes day off & meets her after. Esther remarks, after the interview:

“They must have mistaken my personal darkness for a blackened void-like soul.”

She helps Shelly break into lit world at party of creepy-handsy former lit teacher. Shelly’s pitch is for a children’s book about Tibkins, “a hedgehog with chicken legs.”

Esther: “our beautiful dark queen”

4.5 stars. Reviewing issue 49-52 here until vol 13 is available.
A great collection of issues, with lots of major development and touching emotional moments along with the usual breezy charm and laughs. I was so glad to see Lottie show up again before the series ends, for a fitting team up with Esther no less, and the cricket issue was good enough to make me think I might enjoy some of the recent sports comics Boom has published.

Another cute issue for Giant Days. This is quite possibly my favorite cover of the series, of all time. I adore it. And I love that they're pushing the plot further for Esther. She needed a little chance to see the real world.

The main struggle throughout this entire issue is one I constantly face so reading about it kinda lowkey gave me anxiety but in a good way.
