As a lifelong fan of the Buffyverse, I'm really impressed with how Bryan Edward Hill is taking this comic in a new direction with an interpretation that upholds the core values of the Angel characters. Providing a storyline that feels both fresh and authentic.

This doesn't really have much at all to do with the Hellmouth crossover and that's a good thing because it's not very good. Angel gets warned about it in the first issue and heads to Sunnydale. That's it. The rest is about Angel's Scooby gang while he's away. Gunn is introduced and Spike comes to L.A. They both team up with Fred as Wolfram and Hart make their presence known.

Gleb Melnikov's art is solid although he doesn't draw much in the way of backgrounds. His style crosses Dan Panosian and Dan Mora.

This series really doesn’t do much for me still. The second volume is slightly better than the first because it doesn’t feature any of that evil internet villain nonsense, so that’s good. The bad part is that the Hellmouth crossover has been a bit of a clusterfuck, and this directly ties to that. I do like that Hill brings more of the old favorite characters from Angel like Lorne, Lyla and Wolfram and Hart in general, but I do not like how he handles any of them in this new iteration. None of them feel like the characters I know and love, and Hill can’t seem to bring the same sort of magic to this part of Buffyverse as Jordie Bellaire did to the main book. I don’t know what to think of this whole series as a result, but I will probably give it a few more issues before throwing in the towel.

The series jumps a bit and is distractingly schizophrenic, expecting you to recognize classic characters and using that expectation to drive the story, but at the same time changing backstories and not properly establishing the 'new' versions.

With Angel off in Sunnydale dealing with the events of Hellmouth, he leaves LA in the capable (?) hands of Gunn and Fred. But where there's one vampire with a soul, there's another vampire with a chip on his shoulder, as Spike comes in to fill the void and ensure that the pair can navigate negotiations with a very familiar looking law firm...

Angel's second volume has the same problems as volume 3 of Buffy; losing our lead character hurts, and it puts a lot of pressure on the other characters, especially this early on in the run where they haven't had half as much time to define themselves. But, like Buffy, they rise to the occasion. The addition of Spike is genius, and really helps flesh out Gunn especially, while Fred's tangle with Wolfram & Hart sets the stage for some extreme problems later in the series. It's almost easy to forget that Angel's nowhere to be seen in his own book.

Gleb Melnikov remains on art, and he's pretty great. I've seen some websites really sing his praises, but I don't think he's quite as refined as he could be. His figure work is great, but they sometimes overshadow the backgrounds to the point that we can forget where the scene is set. But he's definitely making this series his own, which is a good thing, and the consistency is appreciated while Buffy's art team is all over the place.

City Of Demons is billed as a Hellmouth tie-in, but it's mostly 'what's everyone else doing while Angel's away?'. Like Buffy Volume 3, it has a lot of roadblocks to overcome, but writer Bryan Edward Hill rises to the challenge easily.

Proving that a tie-in story can be better than the main event

This was a very positive surprise for me – I think that tie-in comics related to big comics event have a tendency to fall in between being disastrous or meh, but this one delivers and outshines both the current Buffy-series and the Hellmouth event-series. Taking Angel out of the equation for this arch has given Fred, Gunn, Spike and new character, Lilith so much room to shine.

I haven’t liked Gunn this much since Angel Season 2 as he has mostly been a filler character to me, going in whatever direction fit the other characters’ stories at any given time. The Gunn and Spike bromance is fantastic, and Fred is probably being developed into a new take on the Fred/Illyria-storyline.

Spike’s “bullet scene” is incredibly cool and bad-ass, and he works so much better here than he has worked during his time on BOOM’s Buffy-series.

Oh and Gleb Melnikov is a superstar.

Ligeramente mejor que el volumen dos pero poco más, todavía estoy esperando a que la historia pegue una buena subida. Y el dibujo en su línea; decente pero sin ser para tirar cohetes.

This series is... okay. I just don't care about any of these iterations of the characters, and it's weird that the writing expects you to when they haven't done anything to make you care. All these characters also just met, so it's weird that they haven't bonded and they continue to not bond but stuff is happening. I think the series is counting on you caring because of the original versions of them; but this series itself hasn't done any work to make you care about /these/ characters. It's weird. Overall, the pace is fast and the art is nice. It's not boring. It's just... lifeless. Undead, if you will. I'll be generous and round up a 3.5 rating to 4/5 stars.

Thanks to Hill's pacing this goes by quick and it's a nice read. Especially for fans of Gun.

I also enjoyed Spike in here, which is odd, because I normally dislike the character most of the time. However, they do a lot of great things with his character and even give him a terrifying moments of brutality that shows what he really is. And for a volume that has VERY little angel it does a goodjob with the rest of his crew.

Not sure where we go from here. And didn't love how the firm of all evil is shown here, but I'm still excited to see the whole crew together next volume.

Ok, so this Hellmouth event is a WHOLE mess if you’re reading the trades. In order to truly understand what’s going on, you need to skip between Buffy Vol 3, this volume, and the Buffy/Angel: Hellmouth trade, in the following order:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #8 (aka the end of Buffy Vol 2)
Angel #5 (The Road to Hellmouth)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel: Hellmouth #1 (of 5)
Angel #6 (Tie-in)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #9 (Tie-in)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel: Hellmouth #2 (of 5)
Angel #7 (Tie-in)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #10 (Tie-in)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel: Hellmouth #3 (of 5)
Angel #8 (Tie-in)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #11 (Tie-in)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel: Hellmouth #4 (of 5)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12 (Tie-in)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel: Hellmouth #5 (of 5)

This volume actually stands alone better than the other two, and for a book titled Angel, does not feature him at all, and instead focuses on Lilith further creating his team, adding Gunn and Spike to the equation, who then have to rescue Fred from Wolfram & Hart.

This is the best part of this event for sure, I like the relationships building between Gunn, Fred, & Spike. But once again we are dealt some truly hideous art, and none of them look like the characters they’re meant to be, particular mentions on that front to Fred and Lilah Morgan who don’t even have the same ballpark features as their respective actresses. As in Fred has blue eyes?? And furthermore they look exactly like each other, except for hair & eye colors. It’s just so hard to read, honestly.

It's very difficult for me to rate these comics because my appreciation of characters still stems so much from nostalgia for the TV series, which means I get excited when characters I recognize are introduced but also get disappointed if they are so different as to be unrecognizable. I do try to give the reboot a fair shot, but we hardly get any time to know these new versions of the characters and to see the dynamics between them before jumping right into the action. Angel has barely spent two seconds with Fred and Gunn before disappearing from this comic altogether.

This might be because I'm more used to novels, but I would enjoy the reboot more (including the Buffy comics) if they spent more time establishing its universe and characters.

While I enjoyed volume one on so many levels this one kind of dwindled on the enjoyment factor it mainly has to do with the fact that Angel is now heading to Sunnydale to deal with the Hellmouth.

I love that Gunn and Fred have to work together and this is where Spike is also introduced I have to admit that the artwork is freaking stunning and keeps me drawn to come for more. Am also intrigued to see what else happens with this storyline.

One of the results of Boom! Studios' misguided decision to dive into a crossover event so early is that trade volume 2 of Angel barely has Angel in it. But those left behind carry this well enough, I suppose, which is more than I can say for the Buffy series.

But part of the problem affecting both series is that they rebooted everything and completely re-imagined the characters, but the writers seem to still be relying on the source material to drive their narratives. You can't have it both ways. And with new characters coming out of the woodwork every few pages, nothing is given the time to develop. They've established these huge, apocalyptic stories with characters that have no reason to be invested in each other, so a lot of their responses seem forced.

The plot itself is pretty alright, though. Fred in particular is being primed for a good arc, and the appearance of Spike (confusing ethical orientation and all) seems interesting.

I've always been less invested in Angel as a series, and I like Spike coming in and taking over like in season 5 this early... also the next volume is Angel and Spike so that sounds promising.

The thing about this Boom series, with their introducing characters from seasons deep in Buffy right at the start is that the development of the characters is being destroyed.

Angel isn't the Angel of the Angel TV series without being in Buffy's presence for three years. It was his love of Buffy that brought out his inner champion.

And as for Spike, he was a downright baddie until he got the chip in his head and joined the Scooby Gang so he could at least hit something and again, his love for Buffy and being around her began to change him.

In Boom all that development just magically happens for no good reason, and the result is some very poor story telling. Which continues the legacy of one of the best told stories, which makes it all the more disappointing.

I'm pretty close to thinking Fox/Disney should take the franchise off of Boom, move it to Marvel and try again. Do something to link the old show and comic timeline with the planned new TV show.
This series is killing the Buffy property.

The choices that the creators have made for the reboot of the series, has been interesting, and is this volume shows, some work... and some don't.

Gun is well done and works well, as does Lorne.
But Spike, although witty and fun, turns heroic without any reason to (i.e, a brain chip or a soul like the TV series) and it doesn't work as well.
Also making series antagonist Wolfram and hart an actual satanic god I think is un-wise, and goes against the grain of the original series hinting at similarities of religious characters but not fully going there (i.e have The Beast in Angel and later Buffy's the First Evil instead of Satan)

However, original characters like this series' take on Lilith is turning out to be the most interesting version I've come across so far of this legendary character. And Gun's new vampire nemesis, an ancient moor vampire, is a nice addition to the back story and gives Gun an interesting extra narrative drive.

So altogether a mixed bag of creative decisions, but it still has promise and is fun and exciting. Well it's successive parts be a blessing or damning? We will have to wait and see...

I’ve gone back and forth between 2 and 3 stars because I do like the art. That said, this story was a mess, though better than the corresponding Buffy arc in my opinion. As a huge fan of both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off, I’m all for a modern comic reboot - though honestly, the idea of a TV one leaves me cold. However, I don’t understand leaving so little intact about the characters that they are unrecognizable. Change is good, sure, but I wouldn’t even say these pale facsimiles have managed to keep the essence of these characters intact. I was so excited to see Fred, Gunn and Lorne show up but then couldn’t bring myself to care about the new versions of them at all.

I did enjoy the first volume of this series, despite the internet demon. Hopefully, now that this dreadful crossover is done, there will be better things on the horizon for Team Angel. This would’ve been a one star read, but the art saved it a little bit for me.

I know! I am biased! Very biased because I absolutely adore Spike and even though Angel is MIA and this is technically his comic series I did not bloody care.

I guess it goes well with the main event as in other than Angel MIA it does not really affect this volume and we get to spend more time with Angel's scoobies and Spike - who is heartbroken, poor baby.

Anyway, it's a 5 star for me but very subjective! Art is great, story is nice, but I do feel like the series bets a lot on the reader having a previous connection with these characters (like I do and I love it), so I don't know if it would be such a great read for someone completely new to the Buffyverse.

I cannot remember the show, so a lot of this is "all new" to me. Some of it sounds familiar but it's still way too vague for me. With that in mind, I really like this issue.

On the other hand, this is supposed to be a Hellmouth crossover and it was more or less about Gunn, Fred, and Spike finding each other while Angel is barely shown. Yes, yes, I know he's in Sunnydale. But don't call it a Hellmouth event if it's . . . not.

I really like the re-imagining of some of these characters. I don't remember Lilith, but I really like her and what she stands for. Wolfram & Hart have always been evil, so I'm curious how they'll be played out in this re-imagining. Spike? They definitely made him different and I'm torn. I've always been a big Spike fan.

I'll continue this series, at least the third issue — I know things change drastically from there and I'm not interested in a new writer and illustrator. But we'll see.

A smaller, focused story that spotlights Gunn, Spike and Fred, whilst being only tenuously tied to the larger Hellmouth event. This turns out to be a good thing for the story and characters, allowing things to play well on a smaller scale.

I still feel like there’s a few things that don’t quite work here, like the likenesses and the dialogue—the show’s wit and one-liners are all but jettisoned—but it’s intriguing in its way. Onto volume 3!

With all the Hellmouth craziness going on during this time I was pleased to see the Angel book remained focused, centred on character development, building on its own mythology, and making me really like Spike in a way I haven't in many many years. Well-written, well-drawn, and a really entertaining version of these characters. Looking forward to the next two volumes.

Anche se è un volume su Angel senza Angel, l'ho amato molto, i personaggi sono splendidi. Poi Spike qui è meraviglioso. Ottima narrazione e disegni splendidi.

Even though it's a volume about Angel without Angel, I loved it a lot, the characters are gorgeous. Then Spike here is wonderful. Great storytelling and gorgeous art.

So far out of all the collected volumes of the Boom! reboot of Buffy & Angel, this has been my favourite. The art is quite enjoyable and even though some things about the characters have been tweaked, they are still recognizable. I am looking forward to the next one.

Loving the new books, the artwork and story is as incredible as you would expect. The bonus cover art collection is wonderful. Plus, it's neat seeing the story brought into the techy world of today, and all together in one book.

I thought this was a good continuation of the Angel series. At first I was not sure how I felt with Angel not being in the comic, but it played out great. I like the added characters and I always like Spike and how he is a bit different from the show. I can not wait to continue with the series.

SPIKE!!! He is definitely my favorite character in the Buffyverse with Oz coming in a close second so it was great to see him introduced here. The artwork is good and I enjoyed the storyline and a couple of other characters that you can't help but love from the show. Quick read and enjoyed it.
