Underwhelming! I was looking for a new juvenile fiction series to read aloud with my young elementary aged kid, and loved the idea of getting into Greek mythology with her. Several issues…

The books have no numbering or indication of order on the outside or inside as far as I can see, so I thought they must be random episodes (not serialized) and the order didn’t matter. I only found out from goodreads that this was book #4! It was disappointing to read this one first, with so many references to things that happened in previous books. I can’t imagine why the publishers chose not to print numbers on the spines, like every other J Fic series we’ve read?

There was much less Greek mythology and SO much more Wizard of Oz than I was hoping. If I wanted to read my kid the Wizard of Oz, I would do that! Again, nothing on the outside or flaps said anything about that other well known story — though I did find it addressed in the author’s note after I read the first chapter. I wanted to read my kid about Greek myths and girl heros, not the “hello brick road” and flying monkeys.

I was really unimpressed with the “gifts” the authors had the girls seeking. The worst offender was “likability” 😒 What on earth were they hoping to teach young female readers with this — that likeability is some specific thing you either have or don’t, and no one will like you if you don’t have it? Yuck. I interrupted reading to have multiple conversations with my kid about how that character already had friends in the book… She had found her people, and she was obviously already “likable”. Let’s not teach the kids there’s some specific threshold for likeability and beat that concept like a drum throughout the book, okay? (I kept hoping maybe she would hear in the end that, “you’ve always been likeable! You just needed to believe in yourself!” But alas no. Pretty retro verging on misogynistic.)

Finally this was skewed a lot younger than I was hoping. My kid already reads books at least this level on her own, and I try to read her books with more sophisticated language. I see there are also novels and graphic novels in this same universe? But given my other disappointments, not sure if I’ll bother picking them up.

Publishers: please number the books in a series! It’s really not that hard 🥲

Greek Goddesses + The Wizard of Oz.

A little bizarre, but enjoyable. Would have been more enjoyable if I had realized this was the 4th book in the series, but easy enough to follow along.

My four year old happily read this in one sitting… but this is the straw that broke the camel’s back for me on ripping off the wizard of oz. The flying monkeys were TOO much.
