Alan Lee's MacKenzie August books have been fun romps with great characters and plots. The plots used to get perilously close to going over the top, but they never quite crashed. I feel as if this one, THESE MORTALS, took a major step towards being a top-notch thriller/mystery well beyond the "rompish" nature of the earlier ones - most of which I also gave five stars.

This one pits MacKenzie against his nemesis in a race to save his true love, Ronnie. The narrative is played out in accounts of August, Manny and Ronnie, coming together nicely in the end.

The characters are great. This would probably stand alone, but why let it? If you haven't, read them in order so you get a true flavor of all the players. It will enrich this very good mystery.

Another Case for Mackenize, But This time It’s Personal!

Author Alan Lee’s Mackenzie August series continues to both exciting, and enjoyable.

In this the 7th book in the series, we once again become acquainted with old foes, while we meet new ones as MacKenzie August races against time in order to rescue the beautiful “Ronnie” from a very evil man (Darren Robins)….Does he succeed, or doesn’t he? That is why one needs to read the book, as it’s full of surprises.

I’ve enjoyed this entire series, and I recommend, as I always do, that you read the preceding books in the series first, and the author himself recommends you at least read the “The Supremacy License” prior to reading this one.

Oh yes, “Manny Martinez” is here too.

I highly recommend not only this book, but also the entire series. I do not believe anyone who enjoys thrilling mysteries with plenty of action will ever find this series, and this author, a disappointment.

Thank you Mr. Alan Lee for another great book.

These Mortals is a great read

It is always a pleasure to spend time with Mac, Ronnie, and Sinatra. This book continues with the development of the main characters. As always there is plenty of action but the plot pulled you in and wouldn’t let you go. The suspense and tension kept building. I think this was a major milestone for Mac and Ronnie. Looking forward to seeing how they keep getting better together. Mr. Lee you promised us at least four more books with Mac and Sinatra. I want them now! Highly recommended.

Absolutely one of the best in this series so far, and that’s hard to top!!!!! I could not put this book down from the time I started it, until I got to end...... Explosive..... Just when you think you have it figured out, Bam!!!! You turn the page and you’re stuck to your seat. I’m so proud of Ronnie, and what she accomplished in this book. I would love to step into the household where the August reside.

Mack And Sinatra Are Anything But These Mortals

When Ronnie is kidnapped while in D.C. on business by her ex-Fiancée, Mackenzie is thrown into a vicious hunt to uncover someone from Darren’s past he has been searching for without success.

So begins another harrowing escapade with Mack, Manny & Noelle leading the search to find the missing person and free Ronnie.

Like the previous Mackenzie August and Manny Martinez series, this one is another page-turner with more twists and turns then a Presidential Debate. Mr. Lee’s plots and subplots keeps the reader riveted, while his dialogue is both whimsical and poignant, and his descriptions of individuals, locations, etc. paints a landscape the reader will feel like Mr. Lee has pulled him/her into the story.

Once again, I’ve sent this out to my friends, family & relatives to read this at once. It truly is a 5-Star treat.

All of the Mackenzie August books are good reads, no pun intended. These Mortals is no exception.

One of the things I like best about Alan Lee's August stories is the unique assortment of characters he has created. Fantastic. He imbues them with life experiences supported by their actions, and by their dialog.

I particularly liked that These Mortals was the end of a particular story arc that needed ending. It was time for Mackenzie, et al, to move on the new adventures that embraced new problems and new villains. The old villains were dastardly and evil, as all good villains should be, but it was time that we bury some of them, who will go nameless, here.

This book is number seven in the series, and I've already started number eight.

Spectacular!!

Finally the goof ball Darren gets what he's been looking for and then some. This was one nail bitter from the very beginning and right up to the end. The writer tells us in all of this writing glory that this is one nail bitter of a mystery. This was about love, friendship and family. In this installment we get to look closer at Mackenzie and we see the man. There are moments when you see the cracks and that makes it real. There are so many things to say about this story , how good it is or how well its been written. This is not only book club worthy but the series as well.

Alan Lee is one of my favorite authors. I love McKenzie August, and the devotion he has for his son Kix, best friend Manny, and all the other colorful characters in this series of on going stories. Each book reveals something new about the characters. The ongoing relationship with Ronnie, and the hate that exists between Mac and Darren. Each book has left me wanting to know about when/how these two characters are going to end it once and for all. These Mortals shoed just how sinister the underworld can be, yet how compassionate Lee's characters can be. My next read is the Sinatra series, so that I can peel back more facts about the Latino marshal, Manny!

I don't know what it is that causes fans to feel a personal connection to an author based on characters in a book. It's a fascinating experience. I feel invested in these characters and by extension, the author. The epilogue promises at least 2 more books in the Mackenzie series. I'm hopeful it will be soon. You may wonder why I give nearly all the books 4 stars if I love them so much. In the case of this book, one particular story line was wrapped up too quickly without enough detail. I know he could have done better. Still the book was a blast to read. 😊

Another nail-biting adventure for Mackenzie and his family and friends. Suffice it to say, Ronnie is kidnapped by bad guys we have known and Sinatra and his partner, and all the usual suspects are vital in her recovery. I love all these books by Alan Lee. If you have not ready any of them, you should start now. And read from the beginning. I really enjoy the levity provided by Kix (Mack's infant son) and this time around, even the dog has a thing or two to say. Don't wait another minute, get involved in all of Mack's adventures.

Just as I finished the series prequel, the new book appears answering my many cliff hanger questions.

Mackenzie August's one true love and kind-of-wife has been kidnapped by his nemesis. And now he wants Mack to find his ex-wife in exchange for Veronica's return.

Mack and Manny carry equal parts of the load here, so it's really an August/Sinatra combo, a bit like Elvis Cole and Joe Pike at their best.

I'm glad Alan Lee keeps cranking them out because I can't get enough.

AWESOME captivating thrilling

I have read all seven books. Alan uses AWESOME creative and breathing alive words that you feel you are right there in the drama. I LOVE all the dialogue that keeps you hooked into the the characters emotions and lives. I am not sure I have ever read an author like you Alan, well maybe the Harry Potter series, ha. However I believe you are right there also. Thank you for sharing your inner creative stories.

Lee just keeps getting better!

A great read. Funny, poignant, suspenseful, riveting, can't put it down good reading. Although it addresses the depressing reality that there are bad people who do terrible things to other people there is also hope that good will triumph over evil. To paraphrase August (and the Bible) 'where there are oxen you have to deal with some crap but the harvest is worth it.' These Mortals yields an abundance of good vibes and a harvest enjoyable reading.

Alan Lee does it again!

Alan Lee is fast becoming my favorite mystery\ thriller writer (just like he said). The relationships between the characters are awesome and you can't help but love Mackenzie as he maneuvers his way through the underworld. He shows us that although we are all flawed humans, we can't stop trying to do better and be better. I look forward to this cast of characters next adventure and hope we get a lot more of them in the future!

This one was nerve-wracking Ugh.

Hats off to my new favorite writer for the next however long I live. All the drama that it's obvious I can't, or rather don't want to stop reading to see what transpires next. M & M Crack me up with the word banter. Great story, though I would've preferred seeing the Kings get that annoying rascal. I also think I'm learning Spanish quite well. Thanks for the language lessons. Off to the next adventure.

Cliffhanger, page turner!

Couldn’t put this one down till finished. So many interwoven puzzle pieces as each main character digs down to be the best they can be, in the service of who they are becoming. Love all the not-so-hidden references to media favorites and literature. Looking forward to the next addition.

I don’t think I will ever tire of reading of the life and sticky situations Mackenzie August and his crew get into. Love these books

Another great one Alan! For those of you who maybe started with #7, you should really go back and start at the beginning and read them all in order. These are fun books with lots of excitement, great characters, and laugh out loud moments. What else could a person ask for in a book. Please keep them coming!

Wheerw

Alan, you are one of my favorite writers. I have read this whole series and can't get enough. I got them on unlimited but have to buy them so I can read them again and again so I can spend time with Mack and Manny. Love, love, love your humor. The characters are insane (in a good way). Everything is great. Can't say enough.

Getting justice.

I love Alan Lee’s PI novels. His characters become your friends and you want the best for your friends. I have now read two box sets, the following novel and the zero novel, and The Desecration of All Saints. Wow, guess you could say I really like these books. I know that! Now I am off to find some more to read, I have not started the Sinatra Series yet.

Great Book

I love this series by Alan Lee. It appeals to my sense of right and wrong. It does get muddied along the way as the good guys do bad things and on occasion the bad guys do something honorable and right. I cannot get enough of the characters, especially MacKenzie and Manny. I hope Mr. Lee continues with this storyline as I will continue to read.

Mackenzie August delivers again!

This series is like crack (guessing, since I've never done crack). A good masculine protagonist surrounded by flawed friends and family, bound together with love. Action, suspense and "that awful rowing towards God." That's a quote, but I botched it.

McKenzie August Book 7

Always happy to read the books about this PI and his adorable set of family/friends. This story keeps the action going all the way from beginning to end. You can’t help wondering how the people in it are going to get out of the messes they find themselves in and the ending- well read it yourself

There are bad guys and really bad guys (Darren). He kidnaps Ronnie (too many kidnappings- Mack in the last book by the same bad guy) and now Mack's wife.

He wants his ex-wife & son hidden by Wit-Sec. Seems Mack can find anyone if motivated enough especially with Manny's help but will Mack hand them over?

The series is still heavy on banter and quotes.
