Flying the head-of-planet around isn't a job for the faint of heart. Especially not on Faldine, the planet in the Verdant String whose magnetic fields actively fight against technology, bringing down the ships of the unwary or the incompetent.

Hana thrives on the challenge, though. Thrives on everything about her job. It keeps her from thinking too much about what happened to her during the war, and what she is becoming. A relationship with the head-of-planet himself, though, is more than she wants to deal with.

Iver Sugotti feels like he fell into the role of head-of-planet by default. He knows he's good at the job, and he's enjoying the challenge of making tech work on a planet that eats tech for breakfast, but the one thing he really wants--Hana--seems out of his reach.

His pilot has made it clear she's not interested, and he can only respect the boundaries she's set. But when someone wants him dead, he and Hana are plunged into an all-out race for their lives. Iver discovers those closest to him have betrayed him, but also, that his pilot is not as disinterested as she seems.

As they try to outwit their enemies, they discover they are far better together than they are apart, and that Hana really is at her best when she's flying high.

This is fourth in a sci-fi romance series, but it isn't connected to the others, really. I recommend reading Trailblazer before this one as it turns out that Hana has the same infection that Tally had. This is kind of a unifying theme for these last three in the series and provides an interesting twist on the plots.

Hana has been dealing with her infection for a couple of years, but she resides on a planet that regularly interferes with it (along with every other form of tech) because there are magical dead spots. Oops. Sorry. Magnetic fluctuations. Or something. So she's mostly marginally faster/better but in some places it kicks into high gear and in others she's practically normal. I liked her a lot and that she chose to be a pilot for the head of planet because he indulged her acrobatics. Okay, yeah, he obviously wants to indulge, erm, other things, but he's respectful so all's good.

And then they get shot at and only some high-octane maneuvering gets them to the ground alive and able to walk away from the wreck of their flyer. And the story doesn't let up from there with a three-party push/pull in pursuit of some mysterious thing that Hana and Iver have to figure out. I loved seeing these complex interactions. And that more than once what looked like a major villain got taken out on the way to a bigger problem. And I really love that the space orcs Coruson

I liked Iver more than most of the heroes in past books. He seemed to have more self-awareness. Maybe it just feels that way because they'd been working together for some months before the story picks up and already knew he was interested in Hana—and was respecting her wishes not to press until she gave him the hint that she might be interested back. I liked their journey of discovery, too, but I really loved the twist where .

So yeah, another easy five stars, recognizing that it's very much my jam and your experience will probably depend on how well you enjoy this type of story.

A note about Steamy: There's a single explicit sex scene and barely time for that one. So it's the low end of my steam tolerance.

What can I say about these books that I haven’t said before? I’ve loved all the previous ones and High Flyer definitely was no exception. This is book four in the series so by now I’m familiar with the world of the Verdant String but I’m still amazed by Michelle Diener’s skill of continuing to create and add to everything. I’m a fan!

Each book in the series features a different pair of characters and this time around I once again loved the two main characters that the author introduced us to. I especially loved the female MC, Hana. She was simply kick-ass and I enjoyed reading about her and how much she loves flying. I also loved reading about the male MC, Iver and together they formed a perfect team.

I know I’ve said it in previous reviews of this series but I’ll say it again, the romance in these books are more on the background although definitely apparant. But that’s what I like about them, that it doesn’t overtake the story. There’s a lot of danger too so it’s not Iver and Hana’s main priority but there are definitely some hot moments between them.

Action-packed and fast-paced, High Flyer by Michelle Diener is an exhilarating and unputdownable scifi adventure and romance that I just know other readers will devour just like I did.

Fascinating AI-nano technology has turned the FMC into a super soldier

Hana Farwell is a former military pilot. She has been working for the past six months as the personal pilot of Iver Sugotti, the official head of Faldine, a planet in the Verdant String whose magnetic fields actively fight against technology. Their adventure begins when an unknown enemy attempts to assassinate Iver by shooting down his plane. Hana's incredible ability as a pilot, augmented by ancient nanotechnology, saves their lives. But they are still on the run from a seemingly endless influx of villains who are trying to kill them.

Hana has the same type of AI-nano enhancement as the FMC of the previous book, "Trailblazer." I find that a fascinating plotline. It is not redundant for it to occur again in this book. Rather it is an enhancement of the thrilling adventures of the previous novel.

I can always count on MD for dynamic, highly skilled, and supremely honorable MCs. In the midst of droves of enemies, both Hana and Iver do a wonderful job rotating between rescuing each other. Two things believably contribute to the growing intensity of their love for each other across the length of this novel. First, in the backstory, they've been pining for each other the whole six months that Hana has been working for Iver. Second, in the time-honored manner of comrades-in-arms, their sterling character traits are constantly revealed under fire, across the length of this novel.

Though technically each novel in this series is a standalone with a complete arc and no cliffhanger, they are linked together with an overarching Big Bad, the Caruso. I highly recommend reading this series straight through, in order, because every book in this series is wonderful.

I have read this book multiple times since it was initially released, and I know I will read it many more times in the future. Every book in this series is a keeper.

3.5 stars. I'm not sure if this is the last book of the series or not, but if so it felt like it ended with the strongest book of the bunch. Both MCs were fairly developed and their relationship was a little more believable. I would've preferred there to be no intimate scenes (they were more detailed in this book than in the others), but that's just me. As it was, the overall plot was interesting and tied a little bit into the premise of the third book of the series as well. I'm hoping that the author has more in store for us in this series. :)

What a fantastic ride this one was!
Tight action and more intrigue built on the intrigue of the previous books. So please don't try to read this without reading the previous books. It just wouldn't be as much fun.

Hana is ex military working as the private pilot for the Head of Planet on Faldine, Iver. We learn that Iver has had a crush on Hana since she started working for him a few months ago. He has stopped taking out other women to charity galas etc. and don't you just wish all Heroes were that savvy about wooing a lady?! (You know the books I'm talking about, were the H dates the OWs to make the h jealous... like that would actually work. pfft!)
But Hana is resistant because she has a big secret.
Then someone tries to shoot them down and the book becomes a chase across Faldine trying to get to safety and trying to figure out why someone wants him dead.

Safety is good.

Plot- Standalone, but best read in order as the plots sort of build on each other. But all new characters and location, so you could read out of order if you wanted to. Tons of action. Lots of cool world building and sci-fi elements.

Writing- Writing was excellent, as per usual.

Characters- I liked both main characters. I LOVE how this author writes characters that are mature, pragmatic, clear thinking, reasonable, relatable, brave, and capable. Her characters are always easy to root for and never get on my nerves.
Woohoo!

Romance- Even though the male love interest was already smitten at the beginning of the book (not usually my fave), there was still good chemistry.

Content-
Language- not that I recall
Substance abuse- none
Spice- multiple oblique mentions of his aroused state, one very short sex scene.
Cover- fine.
Format- KU

Hana is a excellent pilot, very intuitive. Iver is planet Faldine's Head-of-Planet. Not long after the war ended Hana becomes his pilot...and in High Flyer she's the key to his initial survival. Iver finds out he's been betrayed by his high level assistant and he's pulled into the middle of a skirmish between two factions that want a shielding device left behind by the ancients. (Remember, plant Cepi had another device that was left behind.) Can Hana and Iver find out what's going on and survive it....

Michelle Diener is a good world builder, and is an author that knows how to draw the reader in. I enjoy her writing. I liked both main MC's and the adventure. Especially like that Hana is a strong female character and Iver doesn't try to "be the man"; that he respects her and her abilities. Of course, he's liked her since she started working for him...so he's got other motivations! LOL!!

The Verdant String series is made up of independent stories, set in the same general world, but on different planets and in different circumstances, with an underlying theme of evil doers that the hero and heroine fight to stop. In High Flyer, Hana Farwell is the ace pilot that flies around the head-of-planet, Iver Sugotti, on the planet Faldine, which has magnetic fields that make using technology difficult. Though Iver has shown interest, Hana wants to keep it professional, since she has a secret she’s been hiding ever since she crashed her ship in the mountains during the war. When their ship is attacked and they must fight to survive, they end up getting a lot closer than either of them ever thought they would, and find they make a great team. As they try to evade the people out to kill or capture them, they keep having to rescue each other, and realize neither will ever leave the other behind, no matter what. I loved all of the action, and it was interesting that the only hand weapons they could use on Faldine were tranquilizer guns, so even though people are shot, they aren’t killed, and communications didn’t work reliably, so everyone had a hard time contacting each other. There was new information discovered about the founders of the Verdant String and I’m looking forward to reading the next story to see where it’s all going to end up.

This is just two sensible adults having mature and honest conversations about their relationship.
And there was a murder plot and a couple of kidnappings.

*deep resentful sigh* I mean sure if that's your thing, then it's okay.

This is a 307 page book but it felt 50 pages too long. I got bored and confused. Too many bad guys. Not enough romance.

I take it back

I was annoyed after reading book 3 because there were some questions left unanswered. And this author does tend to do that at times which can become frustrating after binge reading her books. BUT the answers to my questions in the previous book were answered here. And I'm incredibly happy about that. Of course, there are still questions here that have been left unanswered (again). I'm hoping that the next book answers them.

High Flyer had all the surviving against tye odds goodness I've come to expect from Diener, but something about the dude rubbed me the wrong way. Like, in the very first section, man spent way too much time thinking about his boner in a serious life or death situation. No one cares about your boner, jeez.

Sci-fi romance with a lot of spy action

This is the fourth novel in the Verdant String trilogy, and it helps to read the books in order because events and people from previous books are mentioned occasionally. This series takes place in a futuristic area of a galaxy in which about ten planets (the Verdant String planets) have been colonized by human beings. Maybe it is human beings' future existence far away from Earth. There is no magic nor psychic powers, but the heroine in this book has some special abilities. “High Flyer” takes place on a different planet from the previous books. This planet Faldine had only been settled in the past couple of decades, and it possesses an extremely strong but geographically inconsistent magnetic field that interferes with technological devices. The heroine Hana is an expert pilot and war veteran who works for Ivor, the appointed head administrator of Faldine. When someone wants Ivor dead, Hana and Ivor must fight to stay alive, figure out what’s going on, and can’t stop falling for each other. Meet two intrepid, bold, talented people as they are thrust into spy games.

If you like action-packed sci-fi or sci-fi romance, you should try this series. It has a similar level of action, politics, and romance as the “Rogue One” Star Wars movie. The romance simmers, and I loved the chemistry and respect between Hana and Ivor. There were a few love scenes with minimal graphic details, which works well in the narrative. This is a cool sci-fi book with a strong woman and a good guy. I also like that there was very little killing for two reasons: (1) the primary weapon on the planet is a gun-like device with anesthesia darts and (2) the main characters value the lives of all people.

I liked this sci-fi romance but not as much as the previous books “Breakaway” and “Trailblazer”. For these previous books, I was captivated by every page. However, the third quarter of this “High Flyer” became rather boring to me because the same kind of plot action happened over and over again. Thankfully, the final 25% of the book was very exciting. In addition, for me, there were too many minor characters. There were so many bad guys and very few of them were distinctive enough for me to remember well. I simply continued reading and made do with my vague memory of who each minor character was supposed to be.

I received a free advanced reading copy, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Call us Daphe, the continually kidnapped

Hana was in the war against the Faldine rebels. Refusing to allow another Breakaway planet to form out of lawlessness and greed, she was a pilot. Shot down over a mountain range, she lands on top of something amazing. And invasive. She went in a good pilot and human, she came out a great pilot and with something inside her helping her reaction times, strength and healing. Now, to avoid curious stares, she's a pilot for the Faldine Head-of-Planet. If she flies crazy, well, there's magfields and hostiles and smugglers to dodge. Her latest flight plan seemed simple, take HoP to an event. She barely saw the first missile, managed to eventually shoot it and the second down. Nobody saw the 3rd coming.

Spoilers ahead.
I lost count of how many times they were kidnapped, almost kidnapped, and escaped kidnapping so poorly they turned themselves back over. They're both ex-military. The one satellite issue is back in play here, as in the previous story. One satellite, over his estate, isn't going to work but maybe 1/4 of the day. Faldine has day and night, it's not a fixed orbit. Line of sight means that satellite is only going to connect out during the hours it swings through that window. There would have to be a relay to get comms off planet at every point of the rotation. The reason this is an issue is if he can only call for help at certain times, it should have hindered him. We finally get confirmation the questions revolving around Tally's invader. But, Hana picked up a string of beads, not just 1. Does that increase her healing and all even more? Should she have had more voices? Are they hive minded or autonomous? No explanation. Are there no police forces here? The VS planets all had them, and this isn't one yet, but they're settling it and it's a vassal planet. They should have been able to contact help after the second kidnapping when they escaped into the city. Never even mentioned it. Explosions in a series of foothills without vegetation should have carried pretty far, sound wise. Especially within a day's travel of the closest city. No one heard or saw anything.
The prequels were good. Books 1 and 2 were good. Trailblazer and High Flyer lost that edge. We still don't know a thing more about the menacing Caruso than we already know. Those involved in Cepi's destruction during the prequels are still a mystery, and one no one seems to be investigating. This series lacks the cohesion and attention to detail that the Class 5 and Turncoat King series have. There are parts of this book I enjoy. It's just that there are more frustrations than enjoyment involved with reading it.

Super Pilot

I’d probably give this book 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

This book is the fourth in a series of connected stories set in the same universe that follow a single timeline of events. There are some cross overs of characters but in this book, there are only mentions of other characters and events.

Hana is a pilot, the best in her military until she left after the war. She has ended up working as a pilot to the head of the planet she came to defend. Something happened to her during the war and she feels she can’t leave until she understands it and the new abilities it gave her. She is attracted to her boss but feels she can’t get involved until she understands herself more.

Iver is the head of the planet, appointed at the end of the war. He was a scientist before he was a politician but when he was appointed he didn’t get to say no because of the public duty owed by all citizens. When he got his new pilot 6 months ago he became very interested in her, but never acted on it.

When Hana and Iver are flying to one of the major cities on the planet they are attacked and only Hana’s superior flying skills keep them alive long enough to land. When their runner is destroyed they don’t know where to turn or who trust as it seems that someone has too much knowledge about their whereabouts.

This book turns into another trek across a fairly empty planet, with the two of them facing terrible odds. I liked that they knew each other for a while and were both really attracted to each other anyway and when facing life and death situations gave into that attraction. The plot is pretty complicated with lots of moving parts of multiple conspiracies. It’s hard to keep track of at times!

Once again the author describes the planet in a way that brings it to life. She is very good at conveying the nature of a place. The landscape becomes part of the story in terms of plot as well as the place in which its set.

As with other stories in this series my only quibble with the book is that the we don’t learn more about the characters beyond what is absolutely essential for the plot, which leaves a lot out. However, even without that information we still are able to connect with the characters that are sympathetic and engaging.

I’m sorry there is only one more book in this series, but I’m still going to read it straight away because I’m enjoying this romp through the Verdant String.

Oh boy, I really liked this one! While I was reading, it felt like it was going on a little too long even though everything that was happening was engaging and interesting. Not much lull in the action, so be prepared to read this one in a single nail-biting sitting in which you forget to make dinner and put off doing the dishes until tomorrow.

I've blindly read two Michelle Diener novels now and both of them were great, so I really need to start paying attention to her.

Very much like the world building in this series, like the main characters ... seems like there is a lot left to flesh out in the series and there is only 1 more book I know of.

There are a few drag spots that u didn't find in the first three books but overall enjoyed this book

This is an action packed adventure from start to finish, situated on the planet Faldine in the Verdant String, a planet which is notorious for being a nightmare for those who rely on technology, as it has magnetic fields over most of the surface. These fields vary in strength from mild, which makes the technology unreliable and patchy, all the way to dead zones which render this technology completely redundant.

Iver is the head of the planet and embraces the difficulty of making technology work on this unforgiving planet. Hana loves her job as Iver Sugotti’s pilot, it tests her skills every time she flies and gives her the adrenaline rush she craves. The only thing both want, but can’t have, is each other.

The story begins with Hana and Iver Sugotti starting a journey from his home to Touka City, as Hana gets Iver’s plane ready to pick him up, she is also planning her own solo trek into the mountains near Tuoka. When she picks Iver up, she realises that his assistant Lancaster is not coming with him and that he has a look on his face that is out of the norm. Iver confirms that it will just be the two of them when he gets comfortable in the cockpit with Hana, this is also out of the norm and Hana isn’t wholly comfortable with the situation.

The flight begins as usual with Hana and Iver exchanging small talk and observing the scenery when things start to go wrong, Hana picks up that they have been targeted by someone and that danger is on the horizon for them both. She warns Iver and begins the evasive maneuvers that she needs to execute successfully in order for them both to stay alive. As usual, Hana is calm and collected as she evades the danger, but is unable to avoid the dead zone which she has to fly through to do this, leading to them having to abort the flight and land as safely as she can with nothing working on the plane. She manages to do this, but as they leave the plane so that Iver can call for help, their plane is destroyed.

What Iver doesn’t know about Hana is that she is not just a pilot, she has some extra abilities which could mean the difference between life and death for the pair of them.

Is Hana going to be able to keep these abilities from Iver, or will her secrets come out as they fight for their lives?

Will they be able to work together and will something develop which they both want, but are scared to accept, or will they be torn apart?

The only way to find out is to join them in their fight and become drawn in as their story develops and it will definitely suck you in!

High Flyer is the fourth action-packed installment in the Verdant String series.  The Verdant String is a goup of planets that have aligned to provide all the inhabitants an idyllic life.  Everybody flourishes.  Seem far-fetched, doesn't it.  It is - not everybody is happy with this arrangement, which means there is going to be trouble on Faldine.

Hana and Iver are the two that will run into trouble.  Or trouble finds them.  Iver is the Faldine head-of-planet. Hana is his personal pilot.  When someone tries to shoot them down in flight, the adventure begins.  The action is non-stop.  Hana and Iver keep jumping from one bad spot to another.  And as they will be spending a lot of time together, you can expect some romance too.  This couple’s romance began before the beginning of this story.  Though their employer/employee relationship kept them from acting on their feelings before, the events of High Flyer will bring them even closer.  Between flying together, getting shot down and frequent rescuing of each other, it seems these two are meant to be together.

There were a lot of characters on multiple sides.  Too many characters.  I found it hard to remember who was on which side.  Perhaps if I had been able to read High Flyer in one sitting I would have better attuned to who was who.

Having been over a year since the last book, Trailblazer, means I don’t remember the series as well as I would like.  References to prior events had me scratching my head wishing for a better memory.  Still, you can read this as a standalone.  If you have not read the series, you may not be as affected since you won’t know what you should remember.  Having said that, I think this would be a great series to binge read right now.

Some of the questions that I had at the end of Trailblazer have been answered in High Flyer.  One of the appeals of this series is the mystery of the ancient settlers of the Verdant String.  Each book gives you a little bit more knowledge about them.  High Flyer is no different and this time, I would say the new knowledge is significant.  And it makes me want more.  I am already looking forward to learning even more in the next installment.

Many thanks to the author who provided a copy of her book in exchange for my honest review.

A pilot extraordinaire, Hana's job is to fly the head of planet Faldine, part of the Verdant String which is no mean feat as the planet disables tech at every chance with extremely strong magnetic fields. Hana honed her skills in the military during a long war that left her changed in many ways. And not the least of those changes, Hana has a physical nuance she acquired during a mission gone wrong. Hana’s skills as a pilot go way beyond normal training and talents which she ends up very much needing since someone is after her boss in a deadly way.

Iver Sugotti became head of Faldine less enthusiastically than many politicians who seek office. All the socializing is not his thing especially if it requires a date. The only person Iver is interested in these days is his rather stoic and standoffish pilot whom he would like to get to know in a less than professional way. While Hana is flying Iver to one of the major cities for his work, an attack occurs so only through Hana’s skill are they not blown out of the sky. Thus begins quite a wild and dangerous adventure for Hana and Iver with more than one enemy who would not only like to take Iver out, but harness a force that could be devastating for the Verdant String alliance.

Faldine is a planet with many secrets some of which are connected to a previous discovery elsewhere, but it has been keep from the populace. Hana and Iver have several escapades and adventures, just when you think they might be okay, more challenges arise with no shortage of running for their lives while trying to outwit their enemies.

This is the fourth story in the Verdant String series and while it can be read as a standalone, reading the books in order is preferable as they are interconnected. Ms. Diener always brings a fine tale for her readers with action, adventure, and some romance that will well please fans of this genre.

Yet another exciting chapter in the Verdant String series by Michelle Diener. While it would help to read the preceding books in the series in order to get a general idea of the story background, it isn't absolutely necessary as this is a stand-alone novel. The story is excellently written, imaginative, well-plotted, and well told, exactly the way I've come to expect of any story by Michelle Diener. It drew me in, and I was totally immersed from the get go.
The planet Faldine is definitely not tech-friendly. Becoming an ace pilot in the face of all the hazards the planet can throw to hinder or disable any advanced forms of technology means that Hana can pretty much write her own ticket when it comes to looking for a job. Nobody appreciates Hana's piloting skills more than Iver Sugotti, the head of the planet, Hana's boss. He also appreciates Hana for more than just her ability to fly. Unfortunately, Hana has secrets…secrets she doesn't dare share with anyone…which precludes getting close enough to anyone to form a relationship. But, when she and Iver are betrayed by those he should be able to trust and are shot down out in the middle of nowhere, all bets are off. Now, Hana and Iver must work together as a team to find out who wants them dead and why. In order to survive and come out victorious, Hana will have to let down her guard and let someone else inside her defenses. Even meshing into a powerful team, the odds are against them. What will they do? How will they stop the criminals from succeeding? And, just what are those secrets that Hana is hiding? The answers are in this book. You just have to read it for yourself to find out what happens and how it all comes out.

High Flyer is the fourth book in the Verdant String series by Michelle Diener. I didn’t realise at the time I grabbed a copy of this book that it was book four in a series. But thankfully it can be read as a standalone, with each book in the series focusing on a different set of characters.
I really loved this book- and now I am quite curious about the previous three books and whether there are any overlapping details- so I will definitely be going back and reading them as well.
This is a brilliant sci-fi romance, with some masterful world-building, great action, danger, betrayal, adventure, hidden agendas, drama, intrigue, and intensity- all choreographed into a fantastic, fast-paced thrill ride.
Hana Farwell is a seasoned pilot- a war veteran who is now assigned to fly the head-of-planet around. She takes her responsibility seriously and thrives on the challenge that would be daunting to most others. But, Hana harbours a secret that she’s been carrying ever since the war- so what happens when her secret is revealed?
Iver Sugotti is the head-of-planet on the world of Faldine, a planet with such strong magnetic fields that it makes using technology extremely difficult. But Iver doesn’t let that keep him from doing his job. Iver feels a connection to Hana, but she has made no secret to the fact that she wants to keep things purely professional between them. When a betrayal places them both in danger- they realise that they make a pretty great team- and soon feelings develop. But with relentless enemies out to get them- will they ever get a chance at a future together?
Superb!

Thank you, Michelle Diener!

High Flyer (Verdant String)
By Michelle Diener
5 out of 5 stars

I loved reading the book High Flyer (Verdant String) by Michelle Diener. It is a wonderful science fiction novel that I found hard to put down once I started it. The story has action, danger, and romance. I loved the characters of Hana and Iver. Hana is a strong, intelligent, and independent woman. She loves her work and is always up for a challenge. She is not looking for a relationship. Iver feels that he has his position by default. The one thing that he wants in his life is Hana. Does Hana have an attraction to Iver too? What will happen when they are placed in a situation where they must keep on the run to survive? Read this book to find out. This is a story that takes off from the beginning and doesn’t stop until the final page. There is never a dull moment. Hana and Iver find themselves on the run. I grew to care about what happens to Hana and Iver with each chapter that I read. They are characters that I could root for their success against those who have a selfish agenda. The author does an amazing job of making both the storyline and the characters come to life. I felt like I was right there with them. Don’t miss out on a story that is exciting and entertaining to read. I highly recommend it.

This is the 4th book in the Verdent  String series but the books don't need to be read in order. This is the first book i have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. It is a science fiction story with a romance as well.

Hana is a very talented pilot. When it comes to flying there is no one who can do it better.

What should have been a straight forward journey with Iver the Head of the Planet all changes when they are attacked.

Finally coming to the conclusion that Iver has been betrayed by someone very close to him the pair set out to find out the reason why. Along the way their connection grows. Both parties were feeling attracted but neither made a move for fear of ruining their working relationship. Now they only have each other can they allow something to bloom or will it distract them too much?

Now they both have to fight to survive against an enermy that was once their friend.

It is a story that keeps you wanting more. And to see the characters win over all the adverserys in front of them

This fourth full length entry (plus 2 awesome novellas) in the Verdant String series doesn’t disappoint. It delivers the action, adventure, romance and strong competent female lead I have come to expect from Michelle. In this one, ex combat pilot Hana enjoys the challenge of flying planet leader Ivo around Faldine which has magnetic fields that actively fight against technology. Ivo is interested in Hana but respects her decision to keep things professional. But when rebels/terrorists bring down the plane in an attempt to kill Ivo, Hana & Ivo are forced on the run together, not sure who to trust, beset by troubles from the magnetic fields and relying on one another to survive, figure out who wants them dead and why. All too soon their emotions are involved and Ivo finds out Hana was interested all along- she just had a secret she was keeping. And that secret may be saves them in the end.

This is a fast pace science fiction story. I was not familiar with Michelle Diener. Her imagery painted a beautiful picture in my mind’s eye. The story is full of action and adventure. The characters are engaging and full of zeal. There is not a dull moment with constant moving between scenes that is happening. The content is sci-fi, action, adventure, fantasy, and romance. Hana flys the head-of-planet around and is a challenge that she loves. Iver does not think that he did not gain the role of head-of-planet. He is up to the challenge of making the tech work with the magnetic fields on Faldien. Iver has his eyes wet on Hana but does Hana feel the same way? There is trouble coming for Iver. Will the trouble be too great for him? Will Hana help him with the danger? Can she keep running with Iver to keep them safe? I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens to Hana and Iver.

Loving the capable expertise of the female lead characters

Although the Verdant String books came be read stand alone a common theme runs throughout each in the series. In High Flyer the lead female character Hanna, pilot and former military veteran chooses to work for the Head of plane Iger, the male lead character. Although attracted to each other they abstain in any personal bonds until they are shot down and thanks to Hanna’s gifts and piloting, they survive and are on the run from unknown factions. The planet has wired problems with electronics so they can’t communication with Iger’s team or the VSC. As the story plays out, connections between the Verdant String planets and ancestors rise bridging activities that started on with the Cores and rebels, Garmin and Lasso involving the VSC. This 4th in the series is well worth the read for the extra plot twists in this book.
