Orihime, that big guy, the one with the glasses, the Soul Reapers... you think they're your friends? Sorry. Their friendship is temporary. If you continue to be a Soul Reaper, you'll eventually be swallowed by your inner Hollow and go insane. If that happens, you're finished. Your power will destroy everything." [Shinji]
With Volume 22 (and Ulquiorra on the cover) we officially start the Arrancar Saga. We are informed that a new kind of hollows are appearing - with a level of development far beyond any Arrancar that have been seen before. With three of the captains gone from the Soul Society, the Soul Reapers seem to already be in a huge disadvantage, and the existence of new, powerful Hollows makes the situation even worse.
Meanwhile, Ichigo is struggling with his own problem. His inner Hollow is calling for him louder and louder, and Ichigo doesn't know how to control him. Shinji's words about the Vizards group comes back to him over and over again, and it seems like the teenager can't focus on anything else. One of his friends, Uryuu Ishida, has a problem on his own. After his father's proposition (and ultimatum), he needs to make a choice. Either he will choose to remain the way he is (without his Quincy powers) or he will start training with his father, but not without a price. Ryouken demanded of him to stop keeping contacts with the Soul Reapers, which means, with Ichigo as well.
Both Ichigo and Ishida are making their choices. Ichigo refuses to join the Vizards, while Ishida agrees to train with his father.
And this is the moment when two of Arrancars decided to show up and bring some chaos to the Karakura Town. They leave eventually, but not without any casualties. It's bad, and Ichigo falls into the deep hole of the self-blame.
There is only one person that could help in this kind of situation. Rukia Kuchiki.
After kicking Ichigo back into shape, the team (yes, the team!) is trying to get the facts straight and formulate a plan. Who knows when another attack is gonna take place, everyone needs to be prepared. But how to fight an enemy as powerful as a Soul Reaper captain? Can anyone have a chance? And what about Ichigo's inner Hollow, will he still bring trouble to Ichigo? We will see in the next volume! ;)

~ "Hollows do what Hollows do." - it seems like Isshin never blamed Grand Fisher for Masaki's death. Does it mean that he blames a certain someone or...? 🤨
~ HIYORI'S FIRST INTRODUCTION! 🥰
~ AKON ALSO SHOWED UP!
~ Both Chad's and Orihime's injuries looked way more serious in the manga than in the anime. It looked horrible. If I didn't know better, I would assume that Chad died 😨
~ Why the hell did Orihime sacrifice Tsubaki? She already did it once and it ended up badly, and she did it again! And now he's gone! Good job, girl! 😐
~ When I'm in the Orihime topic, WHY WAS SHE JUST STANDING THERE WHILE ICHIGO WAS PREPARING FOR A FIGHT, GIRL, DO YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH?! She only stood back when Ichigo told her to! 🙄 (it's not the first time and it's not gonna be the last time, sadly)
~ Ichigo was so powerful and so cool for a couple of seconds and it was so amazing to see (until White tried to get control)! 🤩
~ Yoruichi threw Yammy away like he weighted nothing, how strong is this woman 😳

~ The fact that it was Rukia, who had to step in for Ichigo to go back to his old self, tells everything you need to know about these two characters. I LOVE the way she handled the difficult situation. It was the only thing that could get Ichigo out of his slump and I'm happy that she succeeded. It was so hard to watch Ichigo being lost and depressed 😔
~ Rukia getting irritated every time Ichigo doesn't appreciate her drawings - priceless 😂
~ The fact that the SS delegation came to Ichigo's room through the attic, except for Hitsugaya who just sat by the window 😆
~ "Were you waiting outside all this time for somebody to open a window?" - Renji to Hitsugaya, help 🤣
~ Ikkaku saying to Renji to just chill and ignore the students' comments, but then getting irritated himself when hearing a word "baldy" 😂

The thing I love about Bleach is that I get just as much enjoyment out of the mundane moments as I do the intense battles.
I loved seeing Chad and Orihime do their best to fight the Arrancar’s despite knowing they weren’t the strongest; their unspoken little partnership and dedication to protecting each other is really sweet.
And then there’s our boy Ichigo!! He really stood out in this volume, especially now that he’s dealing with rising tensions from so many different directions (with the hollow inside him, as well as Shinji and the Arrancar’s affiliated with Aizen). It’s always so nice to see the soft, sweet side of him that he only ever seems to show to Orihime after a gruelling battle. I can’t help the soft spot I have towards their potential budding relationship; while it’s easy to be critical towards Orihime for her lack of power or persistence involving Ichigo, I find her one of the most genuine characters in Bleach. I love her pure heart, and how much she cares for Chad, Uryū, Ichigo, and Rukia despite not always being able to help as much as she wants to.
The panel of Orihime thanking Rukia at school was so cute, I hope to see more of their friendship going forward! I’m excited to have Rukia and Ichigo reunited again too! I missed their rowdy sibling-like dynamic, always fighting despite loving each other deep down.
This cliffhanger was probably one of my favourite in the series. Tōshirō’s explanation leading into the final panel of Aizen and the shadowed Arrancar’s?? I felt the dread. Things are getting really good!

Very DBZ vibes this volume.
When the new baddies show up they come by as very "Vegeta" and "Nappa" in this volume of bleach. With both even having similar features of Big guy, looking super strong, small dude, being way stronger, and their vibes and the way they get beaten. However, both strike fear into the heroes as Ichigo actually needs saving in this volume while other heroes get brutally demolished. This ends on a lighter note, with some interesting change ups, and I'm excited where this series goes next.
Overall, worth checking out for sure. A 4 out of 5.

Synopsis: Ichigo Kurosaki sees ghosts, and fights...a lot. All of this is pretty normal for Ichigo, but then he meets Rukia Kuchiki, a Shinigami (Death God) and member of the mysterious Soul Society. When a Hollow, an evil spirit, attacks Ichigo and his family, Rukia attempts to defeat the Hollow, but is wounded. To help him save his family, she lends Ichigo some of her powers, but something goes wrong, and Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Ichigo becomes a temporary Shinigami, and works with Rukia to handle the hunting of hollows until Rukia can recover. At least, that was the plan...
Before I picked up the manga, I saw the first four episodes of the anime at Stellarcon '06. It was a fansub (this was before it was airing on Adult Swim), so the translation wasn't great, but I fell in love with the characters and mythology of the series. I immediately started picking up the manga and planning a costume for Ichigo. A few months later, I cosplayed Ichigo at Heroescon, had read all of the manga that had been translated, and watched as much of the anime as I could get my hands on.
So, what's the big deal, right? I think it comes down to the characters. There are dozens of of them, and the writer Tite Kubo takes the time to give them all detailed backgrounds and relationships. I'm 19 volumes in, and while there's plenty of action, it's the character development I'm hooked to.
In the first 19 volumes, there are three main groups of characters, humans, the Shingami, and the Quincies. When humans die, their souls become Wholes or Hollows. Wholes are normal spirits, but the spirits that become Hollows are corrupted souls that must feed on the souls of the living (kind of like spiritual vampires). The Shinigami release Wholes and help them cross over to the Soul Society (the spirit world), and cleanse the Hollows so that they can cross over as well. They do so using big ass swords called zanpakutō.
The Quincies use bows made of spiritual energy in the form of bows to hunt Hollows, similarly to the Shinigami. However, unlike the Shingami, who purify the souls of the Hollows preserving the balance of souls between the two world, the Quincies destroy them. This endangers the balance of the world, and as a result the two groups went to war. The Shinigami won, and there is now only one Quincy left, Uryū Ishida. Despite his hatred of Shinigami, Uryū eventually becomes friends Ichigo, and even travels to the Soul Society with him.
This only scratches at the surface of the series. I have only seen ~50 episodes of the anime, but what I have seen follows the manga very closely. I highly recommend checking out the series, it's fun, interesting, and has some great cosplay opportunities.

Amo il modo in cui la drammaticità si alterna alla comicità, in questo volume poi è stato un crescendo, fino ad arrivare al momento di massima tensione con la parte finale in cui Aizen sta combinando COSE.
Ulquiorra è un personaggio che tengo assolutamente d'occhio e sono felice che ora Hitsugaya abbia i suoi momenti — o almeno spero, incrocio le dita!

We meaningless beings ponder the world,
Though the realization of meaninglessness itself means nothing.
I absolutely love Ulquiorra’s design and I can really feel the build up for the arc now! Orihime shined through the entire volume and my heart was full when Rukia finally showed up again! I am so excited to see what happens in this arc.

Arrancars are scary! Excited for this arc now that some of the Captains have made their way down to Ichigo’s hometown to stay awhile. The slice of life elements are lowkey my favorite part.

Yup, Ichigo's dad is a Soul Reaper of some power. Urahara shows up and recap story for the reader. We meet more Vizors who are weirdly & creepy stalking Ichigo. Later actual Arrancars show up and bleep up our heroes bad until Urahara mysteriously shows up to save the day. Then popular with the readers of the Manga members of the Soul Society show up pretending to been teenagers and that is not weird or creepy at all having thousands of year old warriors show up in a human school. Turns out Ichigo just needs a quick boot to the head to want to fight again. Its all kind of boring and weird and just a little creepy.

Bleach, Vol. 22 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (188–197) of the on-going manga series.
After defeating Grand Fisher, Isshin Kurosaki is found by Kisuke Urahara as he explains that there are more Arrancars and that they are serving the rogue Soul Reaper Sōsuke Aizen and that the Hōgyoku will take a year to be fully awakened. It is an object that is capable of dissolving the boundaries between Shinigami and Hollow, allowing one race to attain the powers of the other.
Shinji Hirako attempts to recruit Ichigo Kurosaki into the Vizards, only to be refused despite telling Ichigo that his inner hollow would overpower him if he does not. As Yasutora "Chad" Sado and Orihime Inoue try to ask Shinji what happened to Ichigo, only be meet Shinji's fellow Vizard ally Hiyori Sarugaki.
The following day a pair of Arrancars named Ulquiorra Schiffer and Yammy Riyalgo are dispatched to by Aizen to Karakura where they are to investigate someone with latter consuming all human souls within the area. Coming to Orihime and Chad's aid when they are overpowered by Yammy, revealed to be the one the Arrancars were sent to observe, Ichigo is easily defeated when his inner hollow interferes.
Luckily, Urahara and Yoruichi Shihōin arrive and Yammy is easily beaten before him and Ulquiorra fall back to Hueco Mundo. Later, Ichigo learns that Rukia Kuchiki has been dispatched from the Soul Society with a team consisting of Tōshirō Hitsugaya, Renji Abarai, Rangiku Matsumoto, Ikkaku Madarame, and Yumichika Ayasegawa to aid him.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Tite Kubo. It introduces two additional groups the Vizards, who are Soul Reapers who have obtained hollow powers via a process called Hollowification and the Arrancar is a Hollow that has removed its mask and has gained Shinigami-like powers that has joined Sōsuke Aizen.

Interesting thing after last volume, Ichigo is in doubt on his battles as he is scared of giving in to his hollow self, while more and more Arankaru appears and he has to fight them and as he does he is unable to derelict a blow. A fun face off with Shinji and Hiyori and Chad and Orihime. Uryuu decides to gain back his powers. Then the main thing happens when 5 of the soul society members including Rukia finally appear and she makes Ichigo gain back his confidence and Hitsugaya explains the types of Arankaru - Gillian (Menos Grande), Ajuukasu and Vastoorode and their place "Hueco Mondo"" and more are revealed, its a good volume and is a breather between the next big arc and shines an interesting light on Ichigo and his insecurities.

Those Arrancars are really strong and those Vizards are not giving up on recruiting Ichigo. They say he has no choice because he will lose control, but we’ll see how this all plays out. Also we got some old faces from the Soul Society showing up to Ichigo’s school and his home!! It was funny seeing them interact with Ichigo’s classmates. With everything that’s happened up to now it’s time for everybody to train for what comes next because there are some strong Menos in Hueco Mundo working under Aizen.

Bleach: Arrancars Arc Part 1 — Vol. 22-35

The weakest part of Bleach so far (and still in previously read territory, though my memory was a bit foggier on these bits), but it’s still pretty good.
I only gave 1 volume in this group 5 stars, and I also gave my first 2 star of the series so far. This section has introduced several more characters, but it’s lacking when compared to the Soul Society arc and the onslaught of characters we met there, and mostly because we learned so much about the soul reapers as characters, and we’re getting very little of that now. The Visoreds were really promising, and I really want to know more about them, but we left them pretty quickly when we had barely scratched the surface of who they were and what they were about. We’re introduced to several arrancars, but other than Ulquiorra, Grimmjow, and Nel (and her brothers!), I really don’t give a shit about them. Those three characters are quite good, and we have gotten some insight into their pasts, but the other arrancars just aren’t given any substance, and that made several of the battles drag on. We kept facing characters we had never seen before and are never gonna see again, and that gets old quick.
This arc has put a lot of effort into Orihime, and I love that. But poor Chad. He has so much promise, but Kubo-sensei keeps sliding right past all opportunities to boost his character for the reader.
I am super excited to jump into the second half of this arc though because I think we do have some really good shit coming up, if I remember right.

The new story arc picks up the pace with the introduction of the Vizards as they try and recruit Ichigo, shaking him up fundamentally as he tries to understand what's going on within him.
Old faces also reappear in the face of danger and are introduced in a humourous way, making you wonder how seriously you should take them.
It's also a bit hard to grasp where the magic system will go now but the surprise will surely come in the following chapters!

Ichigo's dad being as powerful as he is was definitely not something I saw coming. I'm curious to learn more about him.
In this volume we get some more info on the different kinds of Hollows there are: the Menos Grande (who we've already seen), the Adjuchas, and the Vasto Lorde's - the highest class of Menos.
We also learn about the vizards and how they are basically a group of ex soul reapers who've tried to harness the Hollows' powers in forbidden ways.
The ending of this was a huge cliffhanger and Aizen is definitely building up his army.
