10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as "Hunters". However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I'm someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of dungeons, the "World's Weakest". Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled dungeons… at least until I found a hidden dungeon with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank dungeons! In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise. Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

I love how the mc gets such a big power up. It is so satisfying seeing him climb the ranks. Really recommend if you love action manhwa with a video game like system. Even if you don’t like that read it for the main character as he is just AHHHHHHH after he gets his power up

Premise was cool, but I didn’t find myself caring about any of the character or what was going to happen next. Won’t be continuing with this series.

Solo leveling is an amazing Korean manhwa that I have had on constant pre-order since I read the first volume. With full color artwork and incredible detail and plot, I am always looking forwards to the next volume.

V1 starts off with a prologue that gives us a little taste of what we should expect to happen during our inciting incident. I love that this was added as it gives the reader a taste of the drama and hardship that our main character is going to have to face.

With dungeon portals appearing in modern day Korea, hunters of different ranks and skills dive in for riches and power. The main character Sung Jinwoo, is known as a low rank hunter/weakest hunter. He struggles with covering his mother's hospital bills, his sister's school tuition, and his own survival. This volume focuses on what happens when he enters a dungeon above his level in hopes of better pay, only for the dungeon's level to increase even further than anyone had expected.

V2 is a continuation of V1. Sung Jinwoo is learning about his new abilities as well as what these abilities can do for him . . . to him. The pain and struggle of what happened to him in the dungeon haunt him and push him to work harder and raise his level. He strives to become stronger for not only himself, but for his family. Meanwhile, he is also attempting to keep his newfound strength and abilities from those who might wish to use him for their own. But he also struggles to keep himself out of trouble from those who think he's still as weak as he once was. Which brings up some interesting scenes.

V3 brings in more world building as well as gives Sung Jinwoo a few blast from the past moments as his former teammates from the dungeon incident in V1 team up to take on a dungeon he's also volunteered to enter. After some exciting incidents I'd rather not spoil, he gets to have a heart to heart with one of his old dungeon mates. He is also now under suspicion of hiding his true rank and being investigated by the government. And then we finally get to see what happens when he does not complete his daily tasks. Introducing the "penalty zone" a monster filled zone that he must survival for 4 hours! This volume ends with him receiving a new "job" title.

V4 starts off immediately where V3 left off. Sung Jinwoo receives the "job" shadow monarch, which allows him to make an army of souls of the monster's he's killed. With the more power and abilities he gain's the more enemies he acquires. Jinwoo soon discovers he has the ability to SPEAK with the demons. Still attempting to hide his true rank, the fact that Sung Jinwoo has been managing to survive after so many attempts at his life as well as saving others, has made him the target and suspicion of many, including the heads of several guilds.

V5 Sung Jinwoo attempt to hide his rank by accepting low to average ranked quests. Only for him to appear even more suspicious. And with certain events leading to him being outed as one of the most powerful hunters ever known, he is forced to be re-evaluated. Labeled as the first S-Rank hunter in 2 years.

V6 Sung Jinwoo beings to use his abilities to speak with the demons from the dungeon's on a more personal level. Learning more about demons and the demon's domain's through a demon noble named Isil. This opens up more than just the outside world. Giving the dungeons themselves more lore to follow and more questions to ask. In this volume we are also able to watch as he is finally able to cure his mother from the sickness she had been hospitalized for for so long. Later, due to a threat of demons spilling past dungeons and into the human world, elite S rank's from both Japan and Korea are summoned and gathered to defeat the demons in hiding. I loved watching the Japan vs Korea match up they had to show off their strengths.

5 Stars! ★★★★★
Gripping, Gave me goosebumps and shivers. Wow! I loved this! Had my heart racing and skipping beats!

Known as the the Weakest Hunter of All Mankind, E-rank hunter Jinwoo Sung’s contribution to raids amounts to trying not to get killed. Unfortunately, between his mother’s hospital bills, his sister’s tuition, and his own lack of job prospects, he has no choice but to continue to put his life on the line. So when an opportunity arises for a bigger payout, he takes it…only to come face-to-face with a being whose power outranks anything he’s ever seen! With the party leader missing an arm and the only
healer a quivering mess, can Jinwoo somehow find them a way out?

I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! The graphic imagery had me gasping and cringing. The art was phenomenal and the story was unique and transporting. 10 stars!

I watched the anime before I read the manwa & I just enjoyed the anime more with hearing the MMCs voice & intonation! However, it's still very good & I would recommend if you enjoy manga, however manwa is in full colour & the quality of the pages are well worth the price! Solo levelling is by far my favourite anime, so I'm a bit biased. I would recommend it for a quick, easy, fun time 👐

Review marked below, but first, for those who don't read often...

I discovered Solo Leveling as a part of a commitment I'd made to my partner, an avid reader. I haven't been much for books since childhood, always reaching for my phone or a video game for entertainment. We often visit the bookstore, and eventually, I started feeling like I needed to be more a part of this world, but I had to find a place to start.

I thought a visual novel would be the best place to start — easier to digest, a smaller time commitment — and so I scanned through the manga on the shelves, completely overwhelmed. Solo Leveling, the comics, stood out to me. They seemed conceptually simpler and familiar to me as a gamer. I decided to try it, so I picked up the first two comics.

Through the weekend and week beyond, my partner encouraged reading time. Even though I enjoyed the content, I felt every minute of it the first few times. After finishing my first book, I celebrated! It had been a long time since I finished a book in that kind of timeline, even if it was just a comic.

The second went quicker.

Then the hunt began. Each visit to the book store, I hungrily grabbed for remaining issues. When I couldn't find them in store, my partner encouragingly ordered the ones I was missing online.

Within a month, I'd finished all 8 of the currently available comics. I'd finished eight books! But I needed more of this content. I needed to know what happened next. I wanted to see the differences between the content of the anime that we'd started watching, the comics I'd finished reading, and this series, the source material.

And so I graduated from comics to novels.

The first night, I read 20 pages. That was huge for me!

The next day, I'd finished 100 pages. I finished the book within 3 days. I'd finish two more by the end of the week.

A month later, I've completed the series. While I wait for the ninth comic to see these words come to life, I want to celebrate and encourage anyone else who may not be a reader but might see this review.

Start here. Be like Jinwoo – don't give up.

***Review***

This is a fun series that takes you on a journey about what life would be like if we lived in a world that was like an RPG.

What if you could see your stats? What if you could control your growth by managing your stats? How would you distribute them?

What if the safety of those you loved was threatened by otherworldly invaders? Would you fight, even if it meant risking your life every day? What if you had such tremendous power that few other entities could control you?

How would you use those powers?

This is the world of Solo Leveling, a story taking place primarily in modern-day Korea. A world where magical portals called gates appear out of nowhere and lead to dungeons and other worlds filled with beasts intent on hunting and destroying humans.

Select humans have awakened, granted defined powers to fight for humanity — and get tremendously wealthy in the process.

Jinwoo, the so-called weakest hunter in the world, lives this life and puts himself at constant risk of harm and death for his comatose mother and younger sister, Jinah.

When an opportunity to get stronger appears before Jinwoo, he takes it without any knowledge of what he is accepting into his life.

Now, it's time for Jinwoo to level up.

Review: Solo Leveling Vol. 1 by Chugong (Art by DUBU, Story by Chugong, Adapted by h-goon)

Solo Leveling Vol. 1 kicks off with an explosive introduction to a world where mysterious portals—known as Gates—have opened, linking Earth to deadly dungeons filled with monsters. To fight back, certain humans awaken as Hunters, gaining magical abilities. Among them is Sung Jinwoo, a notoriously weak E-Rank Hunter known as the "World's Weakest." But his fate changes drastically during a dungeon run gone horribly wrong.

The first volume sets the stage brilliantly. It combines the high-stakes action of dungeon raids with a gripping underdog story. Jinwoo is a compelling protagonist—determined, humble, and easy to root for. His brush with death leads to a mysterious power-up that gives the series its name: the ability to "level up" like a video game character in a world where no one else can.

The art is stunning. DUBU's illustrations deliver kinetic, high-impact fight scenes with cinematic flair, while capturing the emotional weight of Jinwoo’s transformation. The dungeon atmosphere is dark and immersive, pulling you into a world full of secrets, monsters, and escalating danger.

What makes Solo Leveling Vol. 1 so strong is its pacing. It builds tension quickly and never lets up, layering mystery on top of action, with just enough world-building to make you hungry for more. By the end, you're fully invested in Jinwoo’s journey from weakling to warrior.

Rating: 9/10 – A powerhouse start with jaw-dropping art, thrilling battles, and an underdog hero you'll want to follow all the way to the top.

Solo Leveling, Vol. 1 throws you headfirst into a world where monsters spill out of portals, and the only way to survive is to become a Hunter. Our protagonist, Sung Jinwoo, starts at the absolute bottom – the weakest of the weak, barely scraping by. But when a chance encounter throws him into a life-altering situation, his journey takes a sharp turn.

Chugong masterfully crafts a compelling narrative that blends elements of classic dungeon crawling with a unique power-up system. Jinwoo's growth is addictive to witness, each level-up revealing new abilities and pushing him further into the realm of the extraordinary.

The action sequences are exhilarating, the artwork is crisp and detailed, and the world-building, while initially introduced through exposition, slowly unfolds with each dungeon delve. While the core concept of a weakling becoming overpowered isn't entirely new, the execution in Solo Leveling is fresh and engaging.

However, the story isn't just about raw power. We see the emotional toll Jinwoo's struggles take on him, the sacrifices he makes, and the loneliness that comes with being so far ahead of everyone else. This adds a layer of depth that elevates the narrative beyond a simple power fantasy.

Solo Leveling, Vol. 1 is a fantastic introduction to a series that promises thrilling adventures and a satisfying power progression. If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-packed read with a touch of mystery, then this is definitely a book you shouldn't miss.

"Solo Leveling Vol. 1" kicks off with a thrilling introduction to our unlikely hero, the world's worst E-rank hunter. Struggling to make ends meet and support his hospitalized mother, he enters a dangerous raid, hoping to scrape together enough loot to survive.

Despite his low rank, our hero shows a surprising knack for dungeon puzzle-solving, which becomes crucial when he barely escapes a deadly double dungeon with his life. This near-death experience marks a turning point, as he awakens with new powers, receiving notifications with daily quests. Completing these quests rewards him with level-ups and small rewards, setting him on a path of growth and transformation.

The first volume ends on an exciting note, with our hero entering his first instance dungeon, leaving readers eager to see how his story unfolds. The graphic novel's art and colors are truly amazing, enhancing the immersive experience and bringing the world of "Solo Leveling" to life.

With a strong start and a compelling premise, "Solo Leveling Vol. 1" is a captivating introduction to a series that promises to be full of adventure and growth. I’m excited to see where the story goes from here. A solid 4 stars.

The color and art in Solo Leveling are very well done. The story of Solo Leveling involves people who go into dungeons to fight monsters for money. Our main character, Jinwoo, lives a hard life. His mom’s hospital bills need to be paid, as does his sister's school fees. Jinwoo doesn’t like dungeon raiding but he does it to help his family. These dungeons are in seemingly random places and the monsters inside are also somewhat random. For example, while raiding a dungeon Jinwoo finds another dungeon within the original dungeon. Jinwoo struggles to survive this dungeon, but it’s worth it because he gains RPG-style abilities that let him level up and become even more powerful. To improve his stats, Jinwoo needs to physically train and defeat more dungeons.

well done korean graphic novel series, the edition i read is in english and 300 pages.
what if portals opened on earth to dungeon and dragon style worlds? and at the same time those opened some people on earth were given gamer powers i.e. warriors, healers. maybe the govt. would pay people to go into the portals and defeat the monsters, some people would get great power and others would get only a little (not everybody can be darth vader, some have to be stormtroopers). this is the story of one of those barely powered characters, he's v.likeable and needs money so he keeps going in the portals, keeps getting badly hurt and returning.

I have almost finished the series for the 4th time and I decided to come back and write a review on the first one I thought I could relate to the main character a lot and it never gets boring it always has rousing action and great suspense as well as beautiful art work for each page. since the first time I ready it I always feel that the main characters journey I can heavily relate to in his struggle to get stronger and the way the author tells the story makes it just that much better. to wrap it up I would highly recommend this if you love action and a little mystery as well as suspense
