One night of reckless fun changed our entire lives.
We didn’t apologize for what we did because we weren’t sorry. Instead, we kept it a secret. It was ours, and it was amazing. We were risk takers and rule breakers, and we weren’t going to let anything stand in our way.
It might have lasted, if not for one tiny lapse in judgment. After that, everything came to a crashing halt. It was over. Finished. Done.
Or was that mistake the beginning of something better?
Risk Takers is an MM taboo with content that some people may find objectionable. It is a prequel to Rule Breakers, an MMM taboo. This novella has neither a HEA nor HFN ending (and doesn’t end in tragedy—despite my reputation—scout’s honor) but acts strictly as prelude to the full-length novel. It is complete in its own way.
I live in the small town of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada and I am a mother to a wonderful teenage boy (didn't think those words could be typed together...surprise) and wife to a truly supportive and understanding husband, who thankfully doesn't think I'm crazy.
I have always had two profound dreams in life. To fall back hundreds of years in time and live in a simpler world, not bogged down by technology and to write novels. Since only one of these was a possibility I decided to make the other come alive on paper. I write mm romance novels that take place in fantastical medieval type settings and love to use the challenges of the times to give my stories and characters life.
I love the contrast between Denver and Harley. Denver is so anxiety driven snd second guesses everything while Harley has absolutely no fucks to be given. But also even though Harley is the wild child he’s still concerned about his brother. It’s super sweet.
“Harley. It’s fucked up.” “Only if you make it that way. Why are you so weirded out?” “Because it’s wrong. We’re brothers.” “So? That makes it better to me. Who else do I trust like you? No one. It feels good. It’s fun. Why make it taboo just because someone out there says we aren’t allowed? It’s not their business.”
Probably not the best way to start a marriage so I’m super shocked they ended up divorced. Really the biggest surprise is that they lasted so long. Because nothing says love like animosity.
I found the answer to Harley’s question very unsatisfactory. But I look forward to seeing how they’re gonna work this one out.
Told in dual POV, 1st person, it’s the first installment in the "Off Limits" series and ends on a cliffhanger. This story is taboo and not for every one so proceed with caution. It’s a short story and more like a prelude for book two which I can’t wait to read! Overall, I really enjoyed it and hope you like it as well!
Oh my that's a crazy story. I'm totally down for a little brotherly incest, it's just the way Harley and Denver get to share the bed here is flat out crazy.
I fisted Denver’s hair and tipped his head back. “Open your mouth, you tease, before I blow all over your face.“ 🥵🥵🥵
The book itself is not really brilliant. As long as you keep in mind that this is actually just a longer prologue to the actual story, you can probably live with it. I tried to look past all the annoying little things. And book two, after the first few pages I had to read right away, has a lot more potential and is written a thousand times better.
Wow!!!! I so didn't expect that. Taboo at its finest, and the author sure knows how to write them. And that ending, Holy crap. Off to read what happens next.
I love my sex-fest stories and a little taboo on top is a delicious thing. And it’s Nicky James ffs. I expected it to blow me away. But I only feel disappointed.
Denver and Harley felt utterly detached to me and I think that’s why I couldn’t form any sort of attachment to their character’s either. Sure, it was kinda hot. But it was emotionless and that’s not what I’m looking for in my books. I didn’t like it. In fact, I read anonymous hookups with more connection between the parties than between these brothers.
To be fair, there was something resembling a connection right at the end, but I’m not sure it was enough for me to pick up the novel that follows this novella - even though I bought it already. Smarty-pants that I am. *eyeroll
I go and read something fluffy and emotional and romantic now. Bye.
First, novellas will never get more than 4 stars from me ... they will always be too lightweight. Second, hard drugs will always ... ALWAYS ... be a hard no from me, even in fiction, so that's another star off. I blew (pun intended! 😉) through the drugs ridiculousness early in the story ... and then the fun began! 🔥🥴🔥🥵🔥
3.5 stars This was sweet hot delicious taboo. And given that it’s an erotic novella, it does exactly what it’s supposed to do. Set you on fire and make you feel like you need to roll in the snow to cool down.
But if I compare it with the other two Nicky James taboo books I read, it doesn’t wreck my heart. It doesn’t make me wish so bad that they get their so wrong HEA. It doesn’t get me desperate to read the next book. 🤷♀️
It will be a very subjective review and that no one accuse me of being biased, I’m not gonna rate it.
My personal rating: 1.5 stars.
You may think it’s taboo fault. In part, yes, but not only that.
First, this short story is unpolished. Messed up names, mixed POVs. I hate deficiencies like this. Who beta read this book? Anyone? Hello?
Than, there is no warning at begginig what type of taboo this is about. And it should. I would not decided to read if I had known about it, and then there wouldn’t be this negative review. Incest is my hard limit. In my opinion this type of content in MM books often are pure sexism. Authors of gay romances often find it as sexy fling, young men, older men, forbidden fruit, yeah…. But if you change a young boy to a young girl, who gets fucked by father and uncle, it doesn't seem so sexy anymore, does it? Exactly.
As I said, incest is my hard limit. Maybe because the fact that I am a mother. So in conclusion. It's not for me. Very not for me.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
3.5 stars No doubt there was plenty to like in this taboo short story. The beginning, which sets up the second book, reeled me in. What the hell had happened to bring them here, to this point? I was more than intrigued.
And then we get the extended flashback.
And where it fell short, for me, was the like-ability of the characters, mainly Harley, as well as the actual development of the relationship between the brothers.
I don’t usually read stories with teenagers or college students so take my opinion for what you will. But Harley wasn’t someone I wanted to empathise with. Why? This isn’t really a spoiler if you’ve read the blurb or the first few paragraphs of the story but... Considering the amount of people he slept with. That’s. Just. Gross. And then, the brothers relationship go from the “convenience” of just not having to find sexual partners to “more”...mostly OFFPAGE!!! Gaaaahhhh. I hate that. Time jumps... Weeks going by...They drove me crazy because I don’t see or feel why they should be together apart from the sex.
Ultimately I’ll read book two in some desperate hope that this will evolve into more of a romance than a taboo sexfest and that maybe Harley will show some vulnerability. Stranger things have happened.
Oh oh oh ... Damned it was really good !!! Nicky James, the master of taboo !
3,5-3,75/5
Initially, I was intrigued because Harley and Denver really started off as platonic brothers, and I was eager to see how they would make the transition into lovers. However, after the orgy party, I started to realize that the story was going to mainly focus on the taboo sex with very little depth. Unfortunately, that was not what I was looking for.
Edison is kind of annoying, but adding the nephew to the mix is an unusual twist that interested me. Yet...since I wasn’t sold on the prequel, I don’t think I’ll read Rule Breakers.
Mmmm I liked that. Liked it alot. Harley and Denver were both well fledged out characters for a short prequel type book. Their get together was ridiculously hot! Like ridiculously! I certainly enjoy me some brother on brother action. But not as much as what's coming is the next book *rubs hands together with glee*
‘Risk Takers’ is a highly Taboo MM (Brothers) Incest novella, a prequel which has me ready for ‘Rule Breakers’. It's "Something kinky and fun and raw and sexual and hot as fuck". It doesn't end on a HEA, neither a Tragedy; Just gives us a taste of their past *Wink*.
I LOVE Nicky James' taboo romances, & I just found this duet today & Dived in! DEVOURED this in 2hrs♥️. I've yet read quite a few of Brocest books, Taboo 3somes & Only 1 father-son incest which was also by Nicky. Don't judge, it's MM 🖤. I'm amazed that I'll get a mix of all 3 in here...Come to the dark side 🤣.
"Rules and morals and ethics be damned. I just wanted the people I loved to be happy." ~D
Denver, Harley, Harley's son Edison...Quite a fucked up family! Though, D+H's past had been normal, A sweet sis & involved Parents...
The prologue & epilogue shows us the present, Which I'll write about in the next book's review...Here, it's the past that takes spotlight, tells us what happened 20yrs ago...Lines are crossed. How, When & Where.
Denver is Harley's elder brother, was 21 to H's 19, Gay to H's Bisexual, Responsible to his reckless, Smart to H's Not-So-Smart. Both in college, Opposites who balance each other. Den's a people pleaser, overthinker. Har helps Den to let loose & live a little too...And it's one of those WILD parties where D+H's relationship changes forever!
"So what was the big deal? Oooohh, we were brothers. So taboo. Insert massive eye roll. I didn’t give a shit about what other people thought." ~H
This started H+D on a path of Panic (D's), Confidence & Seduction (H's), leading to "blissful surrender", exploring their "nontraditional" relationship, Hot & Sexy! Soon Emotions come into play, & Possessiveness leads to Monogamy, Happiness.
“I promise. Honesty and friendship.” “And good fucking.”
But then a few weeks later, all breaks apart. Harley's reckless decisions catch up, His (BEFORE this all) One-Night-Stand girl pregnant now. He'd be a dad, Time to grow up. Den made the tough decision, H+D broke up...They'll still be in their life as Brothers, right? Not enough.
"Just when I’d found something good and worth having in life, the carpet got ripped out from under me." ~H _
Now, the past is repeating itself. Harley's been divorced for 5yrs. Edison never gets along with his dad & wants Denver, So much b/w E+D has already transpired... "...The mere sight of him stirred all the feelings I’d buried to the surface? Edison wasn’t Harley, but they were so alike in many ways it made Edison hard to resist."
But When Harley found & asked, Denver gives ultimatum...WOW! “I’ve waited for you long enough. Fuck rules. Fuck social norms. But I need to know. Me or Edison?” “Both. I want you both.”
And, that's folks, how this book ends & I'm off to reading the next!! 😍 So excited, loved this! First time I wrote such a long review, full of quotes, for a novella 😉.
i got sooooooooo confused reading this because i didn't realize it was supposed to be a prequel.
it's very taboo, definitely fucked up.
nicky james is a great writer and knows how to write chemistry because i could feel the tension in the air while i was reading this book. it was also kinda nice to understand the backstory before i read the first book in the off limits series. it was good to know the foundation of where these boys were coming from, especially with their specific situation (which is the reason it's labelled a taboo romance.)
Nicky James did it again! I'm usually not one for taboo themes but Nicky James never fails to impress. Risk Takers is the first book in the Off Limits series and kind of acts like a prequel to the second book. It did mention about Denver's relationship with his nephew but that was just a glimpse at the start and the end. The main story surrounds Denver and Harley's relationship in their college days before Harley became a father. Definitely a huge tease (yum!) for the next book!
