This is the weakest collection of Haruhi stories in a good long while. Since there was a huge gap between the conclusion to the massive 3-novel arc and this volume, I was hoping for more. Specifically, I wanted at least one of two things: a follow up on the mysterious cylinder found by Tsuruya, and the gift Kyon gives Haruhi for the anniversary of the SOS Brigade. We're given neither of these.

Instead, we have three stories, the first being short and sweet, and the last the length of a novel. The one in between is a bit hard to grasp in premise (which may be more of a translation issue) and overall uninteresting in execution. The novel-sized story is called "Tsuruya's Challenge," which gave me hope that it would be about Tsuruya challenging the SOS Brigade to solve the mystery of the impossible metal cylinder. Instead, we're given a different mystery for them to solve, and it's tedious and largely uninteresting to me.

Nagaru Tanigawa clearly enjoys writing mysteries, but he's consistently not very good at them. "Desert Island Syndrome" was engaging only because the threat felt real, and the actual detective roleplay part of "Snowy Mountain Syndrome" was absolutely lame. With "Tsuruya's Challenge" in particular, the mystery itself is unnecessarily drawn out with no real stakes. There's also a very long preamble explaining the inherent nature of detective stories to the reader, as acted out by Koizumi, Nagato, and new character T geeking out about their mutual love, while Kyon listens with annoyance. I get it bro, I'm annoyed too. The issue is that, without this boring and kind of hard to follow introduction, the reader will get lost over the course of the rest of the story if they're uninitiated in the formulae of detective novels. There's actually some good stuff in the framework of this story, though, as the deconstruction of the mystery genre within acts as a bizarre (possibly even intentional) metacommentary with the very narrative choices executed by Tanigawa in all of the Haruhi books. Within "Tsuruya's Challenge," a lot is argued between the characters on the nature of nicknames and untagged dialogue, both of which are features utilized by Kyon himself as narrator. Heck, we even have a new classmate of Haruhi and Kyon, whose German name is too complicated to bother with so is simply called T. In turn, T calls Kyon "Kyam" because it sounds easier on her tongue, which he of course hates more than his normal nickname.

My final thoughts on this volume are that, although I'm disappointed with the stories, it ended on a foreboding note that implies the mystery of Tsuruya's cylinder will soon be crucial (Koizumi ponders the nature of Chekov's gun here), and a potentially terrifying evolution in Haruhi's powers. This volume is unusual in its lack of anything remotely supernatural happening, and I wonder if it's a "calm before the storm" case. I also love the introduction of T, and I hope she becomes a regular addition to the roster of minor characters.

Finally, the 11th(but 12th in some sense if you count 10&10.5 to 10&11) book of Haruhi series after 9 YEARS hiatus. I would say all chapters in this book were fillers, and only the last 5 pages affected the core story. The author might just left a clue to (probably) setup for the next book. 2 out of 3 chapters were SOS member kept talking in their club's room. 1st short chapter, a rare cute moment, could be added to the anime(if there were season 3) to at least add a glimpse of smile to the audience. 2nd chapter, Kyon and Koizumi 7 Japanese ghost tales talks talks. The last chapter, spent nearly 70% of the book was literature critics and mysterious novel writing discussion, in which, I could see it's Nagaru passion since his hotel in a snow storm chapter and then this. Still, for those who didn't see this element was a cup of their tea, it's so hard to swallow and you need to drag your guts along in order to just finish the book. However, even though this book was likely a filler, but Haruhi hardcore's fans finally had a new book to read after nearly a decade drought, it's a gift, isn't it? :D

This book has two profiles but anyway...

First short story is great. Second is funny but very filler. Third is... almost unbearable tbh. Not because it's bad, its just mostly metatextual conversation. And part of it is a mystery that relies on knowledge of the Japanese language. I wish the translation had localised it so that English readers could participate, then maybe add a footnote explaining what it meant in Japanese. I mean if theyre going to localize "yare yare" to "jeez" and not use honorifics anyway, youre not authentic in the first place. I think this suffered because the translator could not cross-reference fan translations like the first 7 or so novels did 🕷🕷

I would only recommend this one to serious fans who want more content, it's not much of a light read.

I was happily surprised to discover a new installment of this classic OG light novel series. Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my most fondly remembered binge reads after I finished the anime series and I think it has one of the most creative sci-fi premises I’ve come across. I was happy where the author left off but more of Haruhi is always welcome. I don’t consider this to be a series that necessarily needs a conclusive ending; just be forewarned this volume does not make any concrete steps towards one. The volume contains the normal slice-of-life episodes of the SOS brigade but also introduces a new character and hypes up the intrigue around an existing side character.

It starts with a relatively benign episode where the brigade celebrates New Years with a cute interaction between Haruhi and Kyon. The second is another typically amusing episode of the Kyon, Koizumi, Nagato, and Asahina frantically trying to prevent Haruhi from accidentally changing the world with her imagination. The third story really reminded me of how meta this series can be with the characters debating mystery novel tropes and subsequently winking at the audience as the brigade attempts to solve a mystery.

The aforementioned mystery was not as interesting as it could have been to hold my attention as I was reading (Note: This might be an unfortunate consequence of translation from Japanese to English because some parts of the mystery relied on quirks in the Japanese language). It was more of a Hyouka style mystery where the focus was more on character interactions of the brigade +1 new character. But once the mystery is solved and the unnerving implications of events in that chapter become more clear, I felt transported back into the classic calm uneasy strangeness I’ve come to expect from the Haruhi Suzumiya LNs. I find myself looking back at what I thought were benign moments for added meaning and considering whether Kyon’s interpretation was the correct one. My current view

Overall 4/5 stars. It gave me mostly what I wanted from a new Haruhi Suzumiya novel but some parts went on too long and did not quite hold my attention.

3.5/5

The latest entry in the series after an a decade long hiatus.

I like that Tanigawa went straight into a low Stakes slice of life short story collection as part of this new era of Haruhi to refamiliar ourselves with these characters.

Random numbers is the first short and is only just 20 pages but does an important thing. It reminds us that this series is really funny. I didn't quite care for the actual number mystery side if the story and was more here for the funny but cute Kyon & Haruhi shenanigans. After 20 years those two are still the same.

Seven wonders is a reminder of how much of a weird creative Tanigawa is. Essentially Haruhi wants to discover Seven wonders or folk tales of her school and so Kyon & the gang must come up with the folk tales before she does in order to prevent any reality altering events. It's actually quite a fun concept and some of the ideas they came up with definitely made me chuckle a bit. I especially laughed at the mirror that changes your amino acid levels. Also interesting how Tanigawa dedicates a whole book to slice of life shenanigans with zero supernatural events. A bold creative choice that pays off

The last short is Tsuruyas challenge. Honestly it's long enough to be it's own novel but it's a reminder that Tanigawa still has the sauce and is a very clever writer. Tsuruya has sent over a series of short stories for the Brigade along with new side character T to solve. All in her perspective and each one has a mystery. However what the mystery and the answer is is unknown. This feels like a spiritual successor to "Where did the cat go?" which was my least favourite Haruhi story however Tsuruyas challenge is much much better than that. For starters the actual twists and turns where actually clever and I even guessed a few. The meta textual narrative on mysteries and how this is truly a cover up for an in real life mystery that Kyon eventually solves in his mind is so Haruhi and is why I love this series so much. I am so happy Tanigawa remembered the metal Rod discovered in Intrigues and I'm so intrigued if this will lead into the next big story arc. My only complaint is the page count. The first 15 pages is a very long meandering dialogue exchange between Koizumi and T and although important foreshadowing felt very indulgent.

Random Numbers - 7.5/10
Seven Wonders - 7/10
Tsuruyas challenge - 8/10

More than ten years after the tenth volume in the Haruhi Suzumiya series was published and two years after its initial publication in English, I return to the SOS club older but not lacking in expectation for one of my favourite light novels and anime series. Did I wait in vain? Yes and no.

Three stories: two short ones and one longer novella; one good one, one filler, and one that gives perhaps five pages of plot-relevant action. It’s very clear Nagaru Tanigawa loves classic mystery stories - the third story is a love letter to the golden age of detective fiction and an extensive meta discussion of the associated tropes - but rather than actually write a good detective story, he dumps pages and pages of theory and literary criticism through a painfully unnatural dialogue between Koizumi and foreign-exchange student T, leaving Kyon (and the reader) exasperated.

Random Numbers is a fun, little slice of life story where the SOS brigade visit a shrine for the New Year and nothing is as one would have wished.

Seven Wonder’s Overtime introduces us to T, the above mentioned foreign-exchange student but otherwise doesn’t really do much. The school’s seven mysteries are created and then given mundane explanations and Haruhi barely figures. Lots of talking but no payoff.

Tsuruya’s Challenge is where Tanigawa shows off his love of detective stories and nothing else. Overly-long and the solution to the mystery relies on an understanding of Japanese grammar that wasn’t localised effectively in translation (no notes either). For a translation that even anglicises Kyon’s “yare-yare”, this felt lacking. The one good thing though was the final revelation of Haruhi’s powers and their changes. Plus the foreshadowing illustrated by an extended discussion on Chekhov - fitting.

Having waited so long for this new volume, it feels rather like a lot of setup and even then most of that was buried in digressions about detective fiction. This was a formative series in developing my love of Japanese light novels and anime so I’m inclined to treat it favourable and so I await the next volume, if and when it comes.

Η νέα ιστορία δεν είναι κάτι το συναρπαστικό, μα χρονολογικά λαμβάνει χώρα μετά το τέλος του The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (Final Part).

It's been a few years since I last read a Huruhi Suzumiya novel. But this one recaptures all the favor of the characters and weird events Suzumiya lead the others down.

There is a new character that plays a big role in the events of this one. There is also two shorter stories which were neat. Then a rather longer story of the Club, solving various riddles sent by a friend of the club. The longer story does seem to be rather involved. It's odd that in the longer story they talk about the problems of mystery novels, while having similar issues.

Overall it was a fun read

The last story was an ode to those old detective novels which I'd stopped reading years ago because I disliked having to strategise while reading for fun. However, the mystery was easy enough that I'd inadvertently discovered the answer rather early on. It was the details that tripped me up. Also, the solution to Tsuruya's third story left me cold. Based on how I remember Japanese being spoken, the answer did not compute for me. Perhaps, it's because of how my dialect of English is spoken. So I didn't catch whatever word play was supposed to be going on.

It is so good to finally read a brand new Haruhi Novel. although it wasn't as action packed as some of the other novels, and on the slower side, it was still a very enjoyable read.

Yen Press are still making basic grammar mistakes as always (Seriously does no one proof read any of their light novels?), But, I can forgive them, just because it was so good to be back at North High with Kyon and the gang.

It was a pleasant surprise to see a new book was published. While the other novels I devoured, this took a while to get into and finish. The story that stuck was Tsuruya's mystery challenge to the SOS Brigade which took a good portion of the book. It felt like a story within a story and did not see much of the Brigade members. Mystery is big for author and a good time is spent on this. More action from Brigade members would have been welcome. Hope we get more from Haruhi and the Brigade.

The mystery story is the best part of this one, even if it spends a while on perilous thin ice between being 'mystery-meta' and pretentiousness! Just putting it out to the universe, (and Mr Nagaru Tanigawa) but I'd love some closure with a story about Haruhi, Kyon and the SOS gang at University and becoming adults.

A great return after so long, though no furthering of plot, just foreshadowing. Third story is whoa with the meta, but also whoa with its implications by the end.

I really enjoyed this book. There wasn't really much in this novel that I feel warrants any type of criticism.

Onto the series review. I'd give this series a 5/5 personally. It's a series about a girl who is learning to have fun with her normal everyday life. I feel like I personally could see how existentialism and Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning had influenced this series. Haruhi, the main focus, (not the protagonist, but the center of the series) in the beginning is very unhappy, but over the course of the series she becomes more happy. She either consciously or unconsciously changes her outlook for the better and the protagonist Kyon is able to see that change in her and feels like her progress is a good thing. But if the series ends here I'll be very sad. There have been set ups for more books and stories in this series, but given the author who knows how long it will be before we get the next installment. However, I have hope and believe that this series will continue, and I'll just patiently wait for the next installment.

It’s been announced that a group of short stories already published in Japan will be collected into a book titled The Theatre of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I adore these characters so my rating is quite a bit higher than it would be otherwise. The stories here are of the low-key character interaction style that I think is my preferred mode compared to the more bombastic tone of some of the other books. I especially liked the Tsuruya story for featuring her and piling on plenty of references and little meta comments and things that I find very fun but I'm sure plenty of people don't. It's also nice if you're looking for some introductions to different mystery authors. I enjoyed it!
