When vampire fashionista Nina LaShay's design contest rival is found dead, she's the prime suspect. Sexy photographer Pike is number two. He's the kind of man who makes Nina salivate. But will she have to reveal herself to him--and to save them both? Or does Pike have a secret of his own?
Hannah is the author of the UNDERWORLD DETECTION AGENCY CHRONICLES from Kensington books and the upcoming young adult thrillers TRULY, MADLY, DEADLY and SEE JANE RUN available from Sourcebooks, Inc. When she's not battling the demons of the Underworld or tackling a murderer at Hawthorne High, Jayne kicks her feet up in her San Francisco bay area home and attempts to share couch space with two enormous cats.
Now that you're here, kick up your feet and stay awhile...
Okay short story but honestly why? Repetitive. Uninspiring characters. Predictable murderer. It should have left me interested in at least trying the rest of the series, but it didn't. Wouldn't bother.
This was a quick fun read. I would consider it paranormal cozy mystery, which is a favorite of mine.
Even though it was a novella length audio, it was enough to give me a sense of the world - and it's one I'd like to read more of. Nina calls the non supes "breathers" which made me laugh a bit. I'm curious about all the different sup types in this world - so far I know there are vamps (Nina) and shifters (won't tell you, that's a spoiler lol).
The mystery was fairly obvious, but for a novella length story it worked. I would really like to see some full length novels in this world, so that the mystery and characters could be better developed. But the story worked for me as a quick fun read and the narrator Arika Rapson delivered a good performance. I felt like she captured the characters well and the kind of ironic humor.
I read this book as part of the anthology Predatory. While I did enjoy it, it was probably my least favorite story in the anthology. I was able to guess the killer well before the story ended. While there were some sparks between Nina and Pike, their romance never seemed to truly develop. It was an enjoyable story, but it didn't quite measure up to the other three books in the anthology.
This is a reread and is found in the anthology ‘Predatory’ along with 4 other stories. High Stakes is 4.5 of the ‘Underworld Detection Agency’ series. It was interesting enough that it made me put the series on my to-read list.
Just before the start of a New York Fashion Week one of Nina LaShay’s competitor’s assistants is found dead. Lighthearted, vampire fashion designer/detective story.
This was 1 book out of 4 in " Predatory". This Nina Character is stuck up and just not someone you want to read about. I started the book and I was so disgusted by her attitude ... I did not finished the book. Just awful. Had to give 1 star to write this. This book gets nothing from me.
