• I literally just roll my eyes everytime Shinoa start saying she loves Yuu that's like the worst sub-plot in the entire manga
• Moron! How stupid can you be to you let him convince you that easily?! The lieutenant Colonel killed Mikaela remember? EXACTLY!!! like I don't get it. the first's plan would have never been put to action if stupid Guren didn't kill Mika in the first place how can Yuu be this damn gullible I don't understand

[Yu] “Enough with all the talking already! Mika needs help! He’s calling for me! And if he needs me, I’ll go to him! Wherever he is! Anybody gets in my way an’ I’ll run ‘em over!”
If you get to this point in this story and don’t see the romantic chemistry between our boys…I just don’t know what to tell you. In this volume alone, we have the lines above, Mika defying the expectation that , Yu’s reflexive reference to “my Mika”, what the pair’s “deepest desires” and “greatest fears” look like (with more detail on that in past and future volumes), and the final line:
“It’s okay, Mika. No matter what happens…No matter what’s to come…The whole world could end tomorrow, but everything will be fine. I promise that I’ll save you.”
Gah, my heart!
I feel a little bad for Shinoa: Here she is, , and Yu doesn’t even notice! That’s probably OK, though. This story is very big on found family, and I love the way that the love (in various forms) that these kids all have for each other comes through in this volume, and the way it makes them stronger. Demons may feed on human desire, but love is distinctly more selfless than most other desires. Sure, you might yearn for that person, but – if the love is real - knowing that they are healthy and happy even if they can’t be with you is more important. Shinoa was tempted earlier …but here
Even Guren is tentatively included in that, though I still don’t fully trust him. He at least admits that his actions played a major role in all the squad members losing family and struggling to survive in a monster-filled apocalypse. And telling Yu that endless self-sacrifice is dumb when the person you’re trying to help loves you too and wouldn’t want you hurt is some genuinely good mentoring. (That’s message Mika could clearly also stand to hear, BTW!) The revelation that Guren and Shinya (and their squad) is really intriguing too. What was their original plan, exactly? Also, does no one find it suspicious that Mahiru is able to ? Where did she even get that thing?
And jeez, Asuramaru! I’m with Yu: Whatever ultimate plan you think you’re serving, playing with Mika’s mind in that particular manner is unspeakably cruel! Enjoy your time !
Favorite moments (spoilers, obviously!):
- [Yu] “Mika’s…turning into cursed gear? Wait, I get it! You’re doing this to save him, right Guren?!” Arrgh! (Insert frustrated Mika face here) [Guren] “Exactly! This’ll save Mikaela and Shinoa!” [Yu] “Whoa, awesome! Guys, didja hear that?!” [Kimizuki, smacking him upside the head] “Moron!...The Lt. Colonel KILLED Mikaela, remember?!...You killed my sister, you bastard. I haven’t forgiven you for that!”
Yes, THANK YOU, Kimizuki! Yoichi is also super suspicious about why Guren supposedly has HIS sister’s body. But Krul insists that they don’t have time to deal with who did what: “If the First awakens, everything is over” Why? What do you know, Krul?
- Shinoa waking up and announcing that ALL of them have been puppets of the First…until today. She suspects Guren and Mahiru have been planning for such a moment. And Guren admits that the catastrophe and “all the hate and despair you’ve had to live with…that’s all my fault too, because I chose to resurrect Shinya and the others. I did it, even though they didn’t want me to!” [Cue image of Guren cradling Shinya’s dead body]. Mahiru tries to comfort him, saying it isn’t his fault because SD arranged it, but Guren says: “Shinya and I…we were supposed to die together! If we could just die without becoming demons…that was how we were going to beat them!...But when it came down to it, I just… I’m still weak. I effectively killed your families, and utterly ruined the world. But it’s all I can do NOT to dance to Shikama Doji’s tune.”
- Shinoa’s revelation that Asuramaru is apparently on SD’s side. That seems to shock Krul – so, evidently when she wondered if Ashera chose Yu because of his obsessive love for Mika, it wasn’t because of the way SD seems to be trying to use the pair. Yu doesn’t believe it, but when he enters the void where he usually talks with his demon, he finds nothing but weird coffins. “She said you’re trying to attack Mika! But that can’t be true, right?! You’re one of us! You wouldn’t do that!” But Asuramaru is already trying to fight demon-Mika.
- Demon-Mika being so committed to protecting the dream world where he and Yu are raising the orphans together (even though he can’t recognize that the blonde kid is him!), and dream-Mika being willing to stand up to Asuramaru with a dang kitchen knife when the demon busts in…very true to form!
- Not really a “favorite”, because this bit hurts, but:
[Asuramaru] “Desire and fear are two sides of the same coin. Now what does it take…to bring out that deepest desire hiding in your heart?...Ahh…I see your fear. The one thing you fear from the bottom of your heart…is that you’re too weak to protect your family.”
Mika even has a vision of Yu blaming him for the deaths of the other orphans – and his real memories are too fragmented to know that the real Yu never said that and WOULD never say that! But, as Asuramaru points out, HE blames himself, and so secretly kind of wishes someone else would too. Horrifyingly, Asuramaru puppets the dream-Mika to kill the other orphans, including Yu, with his own hands while he begs for someone to stop him. “Yu, help!”
- Yu actually HEARING HIM! “Everyone! We gotta hurry! Mika’s in big trouble!” [Guren] “Duh. We know that already.” [Yu] “No, really! I heard him! Just now! Mika is calling for me!” Everyone figures this is impossible, because demons lose their memories. But…
- [Guren, activating the circle] “Ugh. Listen up! The Guren squad’s basid educational policy…is that no matter how wrong it is, you always take care of your family! So, then, even if this is the wrong answer…We’re going to save Mikaela!” And then having to remind Yu, when he says it wouldn’t be so bad if demon-Mika possessed him, since that would make him effectively alive again: “If Mikaela kills you to come back to life, do you think that he’ll want to go on after you’re gone?...Would you want to come back to life if it meant killing Mikaela?...Don’t forget that you count as part of the family too.”
All the other squad members then echo this sentiment. Shinoa even accidentally echoes the “If you die I’ll cry” line that Yu said to Mika once…but Yu is so focused on his mission he doesn’t notice!
- Yu bursting through into the demon world (THROUGH Asuramaru, somehow) just as the other demons have demon-Mika is incapacitated, kneeling and crying as his dream-self stabs dream-Yu. “Whoa, are you kidding? What’re you picking on my Mika for? Asuramaru. Want me to kill you?”
- Asuramaru knowing they don’t have time to argue Yu to their side, and trying to possess him: “Tell me your greatest desire! Tell me what it is you fear most!” But the demon can’t find anything other than “Save Mika”. Yu calls on his Seraph powers and forces Asuramaru into sword form.
[Yu] “Man. It feels so good, living purely for my desires. Now…let my heart shout that desire aloud: ‘I’m saving Mika’”
- Mika warning Yoichi and Kimizuki that their demons have sided with Asuramaru, causing them to go confront them. Yoichi is kinda badass: “Really. You take us humans way too lightly. See, when someone hurts our family, we suddenly have infinite desire. Infinite greed…I’m sick of people and their ‘great causes’. We have no cause. We’re family, and that’s all we need…You should know that. You’re the demon who’s eaten all of my desires, after all.”
- Yu finally getting to sad-looking baby-demon Mika and delivering that last line…
If you get to this point in this story and don’t see the romantic chemistry between our boys…I just don’t know what to tell you. In this volume alone, we have the lines above, Mika defying the expectation that , Yu’s reflexive reference to “my Mika”, what the pair’s “deepest desires” and “greatest fears” look like (with more detail on that in past and future volumes), and the final line:
“It’s okay, Mika. No matter what happens…No matter what’s to come…The whole world could end tomorrow, but everything will be fine. I promise that I’ll save you.”

This shit is soooo gay. When I think it can't get any gayer, it does. Fellas is it gay to go to the ends of the earth to save your bestie and vow to do whatever it took to save him?
The plan is to get Mika inside of a cursed weapon but Asuramaru and the other black demons are trying to get him first.
When Yu called him MY MIKA.😭 Asuramaru tries to get Yu's greatest and selfish desires out of him but to save Mika is his biggest desire.😭 Mika lost his memory when he became a demon but even then, when Asuramaru was basically terrorizing him in the demon world, he called for Yu and Yu heard across worlds???
I don't understand why their demons have turned on them and are working with the First but I'm also so tired of people betraying each other in this series lmao.
That's good Guren is trying to help, I think??? But it absolutely pisses me off how they are only in this situation because of him. He admits everyone lost someone because of him and that's why he wants to bring everyone back. Him and Shinya were supposed to die together?? 😭

I read up to volume 19 a couple of years ago and then just lost track of this series. I decided to jump back in and reread the series and then get caught up to the present chapter release (via Viz's simulpub app). After reading much of this series twice now, I can say confidently that I don't understand what is going on in this series one bit and that I dislike Yu (the main protagonist) because he's an utter idiot and I detest Guren.
Demon Mika is adorable, though! And Krul Tepes in an oversized sweatshirt is really cute.

What an amazing volume! Seraph of the End is really hitting a strong point with this whole Mika Black Demon Arc. I love seeing the humans have to go against their own demons and in turn essentially at times their own desires. Yoichi gets an amazing scene out of this at the end of the volume. Its also just jam packed with interesting art during the fights. The dreamy midnight cityscape that is Mika's mind/soul/whatever creates a wonderful setting for such a intrigue and mystery-heavy fight as Yu catches onto the Demon's plans and attempts to put a stop to it.
Aside from that main draw I also enjoyed having Guren come back and explain a bit of his plan. For the last few volumes his solo lobo and being Yu painted him as some sort of sleeper antagonist but its nice to see his goals converge with the Shikama Doji deal as they are on opposite sides. On a similar note it was great to see Shinoa fight against Shikama Doji. Its an interesting dilemma and gives her something to do other than fun for Yu which seems to be what Kagami wants to do with her now sadly.
I'm still confused on when and how people see Mahiru. Additionally, this volume continues to redux her by trying to paint her as this secretly good person but I would've preferred if she always the scheming awful manipulative alpha bitch instead of the wishy washy gray area Kagami has written her into.

Yu in all his magnificent idiocy steps up and shows what he’s capable of when it comes to protecting Mika, even if he may not be the Mika Yu knew. Asamaru, Gekkoin, and Kiseki-o are all stalking this Mika, but Yu is determined to get in their way. Shinoa also stepped up and toughened up, revealing what she could do, impressing even her sister. Youichi proved his loyalty to Yu in some touching panels, facing his demon, literally. All in all Shinoa Squad was impressive in this volume. Guren revealed some of his past to these young soldiers, in perhaps a sincere gambit to win their loyalty. All in all, this was yet another intense book, but more hopeful than the previous ones, illustrated in the same beautiful style as the rest of the series, making each panel stand out in striking relief, leaving me eager for more.

This last chapter was just so wholesome! Mika is adorable as a demon. And Yu going on a mission to save Mika is everything! I hope he succeeds and that Mika does indeed has his memories, i would love to see what a twist that would give to the series! I can't wait till the next volume already!!

What I like:
*Tables are turning, it now Yuu that wants to save Mika.
* Demon Mika is so cool !
What I didn't like:
* Shinoa's "love" for Yuu, I just do not see the chemistry between those two.
* Guren's so call plan and not knowing on which side he is in.
* I am also fed up of Yuu being called a idiot and a moron as a comic device, this is getting old.
* No Crowley & Ferid in this volume.
