Read this book with my toddler at bedtime. My toddler attempted to read each word on the page and I read the sentence and how to do the sign language. We both tried the sign language with our hands. It's a fun read. We learned many signs such as eat, milk, grandma, grandpa, bath, i love you, sleep, and so many more! At the end of the book, we got to learn how to sign the alphabet and the numbers from 1 to 10. I learned the alphabet long ago but happy to see that I remember some of the letters. My toddler and I had a lot of fun reading this book. It's an opportunity for my toddler to learn to read high frequency words too! Excellent book! I highly recommend it!
Thank you Callisto Publishing for the opportunity to read and review.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review~
While I don’t have babies of myself (for various reasons) I always love books like this with ways to communicate with babies and see what ways you have these days. Maybe in the future when my sister in law has a baby I can try out some signs and practice with them. That would be so cute and fun!
In this delightful book we learn an assortiment of signs you can practice with your babies so you can communicate with them in an easy and cute way. Because until they can use words it won’t be always easy to figure out what they want. And signs are just much better than crying or having to play Sherlock Holmes. XD But thanks to this book you can learn your baby up when they want to picked up (which btw was just adorable), but also learn I love you and the words for mommy and daddy. I just loved seeing what signs we would learn and I can tell you they are all useful and will be used daily!
The signs and how to use them were easy to follow, some are just simple one illustration of a baby/kid with an instruction, others feature several illustrations. I had fun to try them out and I like how intuitive they are a lot of times. Like with eat you just move your fingers to your mouth like your putting food in your mouth. Or when you want to hold a doll you make a movement like you are cradling/rocking a baby.
Though the play one reminded me more of going to a metal/rock concert. XD Or the one who is hurting reminds me of anime/manga when a character is shy/unsure.
The illustrations were absolutely adorable! So cute! I love the colours used.
The only thing what I would have loved to see is some more instructions/some more tips on using signs.
This review is intended for educational and informative purposes. I hope you enjoy!
My First Book of Baby Signs is a terrific informative book for young children that includes sign language content. The book details vocabulary children will use every day to describe their environment and desires. I enjoyed how the book stated words, emotions, and family members while illustrating and explaining its functions using situational aspects. Also, the book is a sign language guide that gives specific steps to sign words, numbers, alphabets, and short phrases. The accompanying illustrations are super cool, as well. They depict children from various ethnic backgrounds, including children who are exceptionally created or diagnosed with a condition such as vitiligo. This literature can be essential in teaching young children to identify words and use sign language through repetition. This is an excellent book to use with a child with a speech delay to encourage effective communication or promote a child’s ability in another form of communication. As an educator, I would like to note that parents and teachers could use the book for babies, toddlers, and young children. It is never too early to expose a child to ASL sign language. However, the book is rather lengthy for babies and toddlers, so I would break the content into portions and build upon the vocabulary that way. Overall, the book is very elaborate and detailed. I rated this book a five out of five because of its’ simplicity but very informative nature. I like that the content is relevant, stimulating, and recognizes young children’s daily routine and items evident within their routine. Furthermore, I like that the author’s background is suggested, proving the content's credibility and shows how the content vocabulary was developed. As a Registered Behavior Technician and Early Childhood/Special Education major, I totally think this book is a must-read and buy!
What a delightful and helpful book that is easy to follow and joyful to read! The illustrations and directions are clear and concise and make learning some basics in ASL available for anyone that can read. The wording is captivating and easy to comprehend. Although the premise may feel simplistic, it absolutely is a wonderful teaching tool that will engage anyone wanting to increase their knowledge in baby signing. I recommend this book as a great start to teaching yourself and your baby how to communicate effectively for their basic needs by signing. Being able to communicate in more than one language is not only amazing, but it also adds to better brain development! So, win, win here!! But the book, learn and teach a new skill!
What a terrific book to share with family in order to help our babies and toddlers communicate more effectively. The illustrations and text provide a real life situation that might use each of the 40 signed words and the sign itself is described in words and pictures, ensuring accurate ASL signing. Illustrator Cait Brennan includes a variety of family configurations and skin tones in her illustrations. My grandsons picked up on several signs early on and I am excited to see them add even more and will encourage them to continue using them always! Thanks for providing me with a copy of this book, Amazon Vine.
Super easy-to-understand and useful guide for babies to learn sign language. Some of the signs were a bit hard to figure out, but I think that the author did the best job of describing signs as they could. All of the pictures worked really well with these descriptions, depicting babies/toddlers using the signs in their own everyday lives. At first, it was confusing to figure out the intended audience for this book due to the tense the author wrote in, but it was eventually easier to tell after reading a few pages. This book will definitely be a great tool for any and all toddlers.
This book is such a great resource for parents. I loved it! I have been learning ASL, I found that I already knew some of these signs but I’m glad that that random signs weren’t used. Everything is clear and easy to understand for adults. So far from what I’ve seen, teaching ASL to children helps with communication with parents especially if kids are nonverbal. I can’t wait to use this signs one day with my own!
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this e-ARC.
Great book and beginner ways to teach littles some sign language! Only receives 4 stars to me because i feel a little like for purchase it should contain a few more signs at least, and there were some key ones I was hoping for that aren’t contained.
I was happy it’s on KU though and will definitely use the signs.
Another morning basket favorite for our family. Perfect for 0-3year olds. Love the vocabulary! All words baby will need or be exposed to in the first few years. Also, the small stories given for each word not only make it more fun to read it also means you can share even more signs with your child.
I like that there are descriptions as well as pictures. It is well put together and easy reference. I bought for my daughter & granddaughter and have the digital copy for me.
Simple picture book showcasing 40 simple signs to teach a toddler. It’s not exactly a storyline, but you can read sentences below each picture. The back matter includes instructions on how to sign the alphabet and numbers.
This book is very helpful! It is a great book to read with a little one to introduce signs and verbal language together. The signing is descriptive and easy to learn and goes along well with a story for baby.
liked this but i wonder if it is for parents or children? because if it is for children, then i think the illustrations should have been more clear. a little image on the side is not helping much. they should be like the images on the cover.
Watching our grandson use sign language is fascinating! He is so smart! This book hits all the most important words for babies to learn (eat, more, milk, please, help…). Really cute illustrations!
Sry informative and easy to follow !!! Great for all parents and kids of all ages . Perfect way to solidify easy communication between parents and child
We learned just a few signs and taught the baby, and it's truly life changing! It's so frustrating though when she makes up her own signs and we don't have a dictionary!
