Captain Tom Moore inspired so many (myself included) during the first months of the pandemic, with his incredible fundraising efforts for the NHS. Earlier this year, I enjoyed reading his memoir Tomorrow Will Be a Good Day: My Autobiography, so when I discovered a sequel was released after his passing, I had to read it!
Captain Tom’s Life Lessons is a short, simple read, packed full of Tom’s wisdom and advice, gained over his century on this planet. It’s written in a down to earth, friendly tone, which captures who he was.
“We only have one spin around the circuit, so it’s important to enjoy a wide range of experiences and see and learn as much as we can in the time we’re allotted.”
There is added poignancy reading these words from a remarkable man in what were to prove the final months of his life. Captain Tom addresses that in his own unique style too.
“This old chassis has had a good run and is soon headed for the scrapheap. Not there’ll be much to salvage, mind. I find myself wondering what the end will be like and whether I’ve had my last bowl of porridge.”
From the importance of starting each day with a positive routine, to respecting the human body and being kind to others, I loved being able to experience Tom’s insights on life one more time. It made me feel like I was spending an afternoon with my grandparents.
“The overgrown track is always the more interesting option than the well-trodden path, and if the idea of that frightens us a bit, then all the better.”
Some of Tom’s most touching words were reserved for his peers. It makes you want to strike up a conversation with an elderly neighbour or help out a stranger – basically, to be a better person and contribute to society in a positive way. Though, if it's the secrets to long life you're seeking, you may find Captain Tom’s cheeky humour instead!
“People often ask me what the secret to old age is, but I really don’t have one other than to keep breathing.”
After reading this, I’m left wanting to try something new, eat healthier, and be kinder to myself and others. You may not find much that is new if you have previously read Tomorrow Will Be a Good Day: My Autobiography, but for those like myself, who just want to spend time with an old friend, or receive comforting words of wisdom, then it's a great little read.
“None of us know what’s around the corner and it might just be something magnificent.”
This was an enjoyable book filled with snippets of wisdom and life lessons alongside Captain Tom’s autobiography. An easy read that isn’t exactly profound but with plenty of common sense and knowledge. A bit like listening to a Grandparent’s stories.
Reflections and lessons learned: “Nothing learned through trying is ever wasted”
An amazing pandemic story of how one simple act of unfearing kindness can spread hope. Was he the perfect textbook mr nice in life? Not at all - he was an all round human character that dealt with life as an adventure with some regret but a lot of learning. Finally a lockdown written book seemingly without a political or social commentary showboating agenda too. We have taken from this that he had cheeky sense of humour, a bravery in extreme times, a giving heart and a lust for life - my children will hopefully continue to be inspired by his story
The nation's Grandfather in text form. If you grew up without a Grandfather, no matter, for this small book can give you all the life advice and stories and wisdom that any Grandparent can.
Wholesome. Warm. Positive. Such a beautiful book from a simple man. You can feel such a deep connection to him through his words. I even shed a tear once or twice. Would definitely recommend.
The UK’s answer to Jordan Peterson if he was twice the age and had ten rules for life instead of twelve. This is the second book the publishers squeezed from him (the Cadburys corporation squeezed out a podcast) before Tom was taken by the very Covid that made his name. He is very open, optimistic and mainstream friendly. He looks sure to keep getting plaudits from beyond the grave, with many no doubt hoping that he continues to walk back and forth for the NHS.
This book was gifted to me by my sister and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this from start to finish, very humble and warm.
I'd seen captain Tom on the news but didn't know much about him or what he stood for appart from raising money. This mini biography gives an insight into his life and how he used a positive attitude to get bu in life.
I liked how this book has 6 chapters with heading like "eat your porridge" and "find your purpose" its something we can all relate to. It was an emotional read and I felt my eyes welling up becuae its such a pleasure to learn about his life and how we are slowly loosing people who can tell us about past events.
Overall I would recommend this to absolutely everyone, I've already passed it onto a friend and told her how amazing it is!
Captain Sir Tom Moore was a wonderfully wise and down to earth man. Coming from Yorkshire, you'd expect nothing else! He tells his tales as though he's sat in your living room talking to you and his words of wisdom are full of common sense. His books should be made compulsory reading for all secondary school pupils. They'd learn a lot from this centenarian. His words and wonderful optimism will live forever, especially for those who knew him best. His family were lucky to have this national treasure as their father and grandfather.
Short book a damaged to fill up some of my vacant time with pleasure reading, but nothing super scientific that will lead to a better life through being healthy.
It is more opinion based and leaning toward a memoir without the heaviness of being an actual memoir.
It's not bad at all, it's just that there is nothing new here that makes my want to jump out of my chair and doing something dofferemt. Like I said, it managed to fill up space with reading and managed to add another book to my collection of completed works, but I wasn't too satisfied.
I wouldn't pick it up again. If you want a short book with a similar message read As A Man Thinketh.
I didn't know who Captain Tom Moore was before picking this up. I just feel like I need all the advice I can get. And I think the advice in here and the little tidbits about this man's life were lovely. It made me smile several times!
A little gem of a book from a man who offered some positive news headlines in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic. However, this is more than just the story of what he did during COVID, but a wider exploration of what he learnt from 100 years of life.
He discusses his childhood, war experiences, and family, as well as the pandemic and his newfound fame. It's written in a friendly confiding tone, encouraging you to live each moment and be the best person you can be, helping others and making yourself happy.
It's not profound but it's encouraging, and reasserts those things that you wish you could do and be, and makes you want to do and be those things all over again. Derek Jacobi is also a fantastic narrator of this audiobook. He strikes a perfect tone for the encouragement and dry humour that the book is full of.
“The overgrown track is always the more interesting option than the well-trodden path, and if the idea of that frightens us a bit, then all the better.”
Look, I’m not one for reading any kind of inspirational type book, and I only read this because it was given to me as a gift. But wow what a lovely book! What an incredible man with such an interesting backstory, I was so moved by this book I think I will definitely read it again! I am very surprised by how much I loved this book. Easy 5/5 for me!
This although an easy read is a very nice thought provoking one. Sir Tom lived an extremely enriched life. Not because of his travels, or the amazing things he did but rather because of content and happiness from just being him. A amazing message to share, especially post pandemic life where everyone is trying to find their way is that it is simply okay, well more than okay to be you and it is something you should embrace. The last chapter being about never walking alone I think is the most important, the whole books he insists it is good to enjoy your own company, decide what you want and to be yourself, but the last chapter rounds it off by saying how great all of these things are but to love people and to have people to celebrate and look back with will always be one of the joys of life.
This was one of the most beautiful and heartwarming books I have ever read. By far one of my favorites this year. I am not ashamed to say that I teared up a bit during some moments. Although somewhat short, it is so unbelievably sweet and filled with the loving wisdom of Captain Sir Thomas Moore. Moore made international headlines in 2020 during his 100th birthday walk raising funds for charity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
If I could choose for someone five books to read before they die, this would be one of them. You can listen to the audiobook version which I did and it was wonderfully done by the narrator. That being said, I’m purchasing the hard copy to own (at least for the bookshelf).
What a wonderfully uplifting and heartwarming read, made all the more poignant as Captain Tom is no longer with us. But his legacy lives on. And he gave me so much to think about. I am thankful for this book because I think Captain Tom's lessons are actually so important and not relayed in a patronising, preachy, self help kinda way. Just lessons learned from a life well lived and I hope to live my life more like Captain Tom going forwards after reading this.
A beautiful novel filled with moments of hope, encouragement and love. I could write the whole novel into my favourite quotes, but I'll just put a few:
1. "Above all be kind." 2. "People are defined by how they deal with life's unfairness, and not losing hope is key to that." 3. " It takes strength to start all over again, but you can make yourself believe that things will be better if you do."
