The spirit of Catalina, a young woman who committed suicide, is being led through the city, and her own life, by the mysterious freckle-faced angel of death Karmen.

Cryptic, strange, and quite beautiful, issue # 3 of Guillem March’s existential comic book “Karmen” sees Catalina coming to the realization that she is, indeed, dead and that she wasted her life.

We also learn a little bit about Karmen, who, unlike her other angels of death, has a personal agenda of her own for her clients, whom she refuses to treat as a mere job, rushing them through the bureaucratic process of shuffling off their mortal coil.

What that agenda is, however, remains to be seen…

This issue made me feel a lot of different feels. The art was amazing and the story was very moving (I definitely teared up at some points). I liked the expansion of the universe through the addition of another character and I am definitely curious about where this story is going. Just a TW for the series - suicide/suicidal thoughts are definitely a prominent theme. There is discussion of suicide but, so far, there hasn't been any in depth discussion of mental health, so, I hope that this will be discussed in later issues.

Wowee.

We learn a lot more about Karmen in this issue. Catalina is annoying and still beautiful as ever. She happens to be near a man who is killed while cruising the street to propose to his girlfriend.

We meet another person who does what Karmen does, and their dialogue reveals a lot. Apparently Karmen is a sort of outcast in their profession, which seems to be a guide to the dead individual's reincarnation. She gives them more time in this limbo, whether it affects their next lives has yet to be clarified.

We learn that the dead get a glimpse into the other person's lives and trauma if they touch a living person. There's also some odd light getting closer to Cata, reminiscent of the whole "step into the light" thing.

This other guide named Karmela shows up very quickly to take the man with her.

Cannot wait to see what goes down in the next volume.

TW: self-harm, suicide

This issue resonated a lot with me personally. Though I can also see the beginning of some potentially preachy themes regarding suicide. The story really picked up pace at this point, exchanging an emotionally driven plot for an almost tech/fantasy dystopian Afterlife Bureau scenario, which I'm interested in continuing to explore.

Finally getting back to story, to doing at least a little of the necessary world-building late. Art is of course still wild. Obvious content warnings for mental health / suicide stuff, particularly for the death figure calling the victim selfish and childish etcetera for committing suicide.
