ODA Tomohito Name (in native language):小田智仁 Associated Names:オダトモヒト
Tomohito Oda won the grand prize for World Worst One in the 70th Shogakukan New Comic Artist Awards in 2012. Oda’s series Digicon, about a tough high school girl who finds herself in control of an alien with plans for world domination, ran from 2014 to 2015.
Komi’s made it to New York, which I think means she can make it to anywhere. Everybody is everywhere all at once, but Manbagi plans to finally confess, consequences be damned. Elsewhere, Najimi forgets to keep up with current events and a change in perspective makes all the difference.
This volume releases the same week as another long-running manga of similar tone, Teasing Master Takagi-san, and it’s an interesting contrast between the two approaches to their continued serialization. The aforementioned title is relentlessly same-y with almost every chapter, content to be a good time, which it mostly is.
For my money, Komi Can’t Communicate is, by most metrics, a less interesting series on paper (yes, yes, don’t bother going there). But because it applies enough shake-ups to its formula it can really do some great stuff if it wants to. This means it gets an edge in quality if it plays to its strengths while giving something different.
Case in point, there’s an absolute smorgasbord of brilliant choices made in this book. Which we’ll get to, but let’s just give it up for Najimi right now, whose nonsense once more provides the levity I crave. The business with the outlets works because they’re the character who would do exactly what they did. Najimi is always that little bit extra, but deployed perfectly this time around.
New York offers a chance for Tadano to get real cozy with… Katai… again. Seeing them go on the most romantic excursion in the series so far and the surprise return of Tadano’s girl form was kind of amazing. Somebody comments that Katai is a shojo heroine and that feels about right. There are some excellent cast moments sprinkled through this trip (the guy who speaks in the narrative boxes really gets his own time in the sun finally).
As a bonus, Ase and Naruse sort of get a little closer, with Naruse’s freewheeling narcissism (and incredible [lack of] fashion sense) making him funnier than he has been in ages. His pairing with Ase remains strong, even up against his general obliviousness, doubly so because the word ninny gets used AND there’s a disinfected baka hammer hanging around.
I’m mostly over the whole Komi-Manbagi-Tadano triangle since its conclusion is forgone, but there’s some good tweaks to this once again. Manbagi’s awkward attempts at confession, in a cathedral no less, while everybody is hiding behind pews, is ridiculously inept in the best way.
The real showstopper, however, has nothing to do with school trips at all, although the follow-up to this one where Tadano’s sister is hellbent on making sure Komi’s brother goes on their school trip is brilliant. I am not sure just why I like her continued torture of him, but I do.
Anyway, there’s one chapter that is shown from a fixed perspective looking from the front of the class towards the back and it just documents the passage of a “typical” day as these students interact and are weird in their various ways.
It’s got lots of background gags and shuffling of people in and out of their seats and adds a lot to what would be pretty pedestrian section otherwise. Manbagi’s reaction to a joke here is easily the second best gag in the whole volume. There’s a dollop of creativity here that works just right.
Which is why this is ranking higher than Teasing Master Takagi-san in this week’s releases - it’s willing to change something up in either story or presentation to give it a little kick in the pants this many volumes along. And when it works, it really works.
No, it doesn’t all achieve such lofty heights. Yamai shows up, grr, although her off-screen creepiness nearly justifies itself in that forced perspective chapter. That guy with the Buddha head is starting to grate on my nerves almost as much as Yamai with his own creepiness. The diminishing returns of the love triangle are palpable at this point.
4 stars - on balance, a great volume. There are a ton of jokes and a larger chunk than usual both land and land well. Yamai is in this volume and I still can’t do any less than give it a 4, which is pretty high praise from me.
The class trip in New York offers opportunities to shake up the love triangle and for the whole cast to have fun in a new environment. And in the last pages Valentine's Day has come around, so surely next volume is going to be wild, right? Right? Pleeeeeeese????
The class trip in NYC continues and while we see Komi’s classmates see the city in interesting pairs, she and Manbagi are in an uncomfortable bind when both understand they each have feelings for Tadano but by the end of the trip their friendship is still strong and will accept what future outcome occurs.
Later back at school, we see more of the younger students. A- (91%/Excellent)
A perfect volume. Oda is truly a master of expression by the way, what incredible execution. For a soft, emoi, high school manga with lots of subtlety, he just absolutely nails the faces and makes you fall in love with absolutely everybody. This volume is great, with a lot of tension, story beats, and character development.
MORE SHOSUKEEEE. PAGE 152 THE SECOND, THIRD, AND FOURTH PANEL, last seen on 155 panel 3. SPOTTED AGAIN NEXT PAGE AT 156 FIRST PANEL. THIS IS A CHAPTER FOR MY HANDSOME BOY, temporary disappearance on page 161 panel one and two. i only got to see my babies eyes once during the whole chapter and it didnt grow the romance between hitori and him, someone is ending up in a headlock, i want to give 4 stars for that alone but since shosuke was shown it gets 5.
Shoko and Rumiko's friendship is the cutest thing ever they're so precious.
The trip to NYC was super... boring. The Kyoto trip and the ski trip were both so much more interesting if I didn't know anything about New York and I read this manga I'd think it's the most boring place to exist.
This was an absolute rollercoaster, but it was SO good- the previous volumes were mostly filler but here it picks up the pace of the plot again?? So excited for volume 23!!!!
This is a solid 3.5 volume, and no more than that really. But I guess it had enough of some of the cute secondary characters (like Ase and Naruse, and Shosuke) to go for the four stars as a visual rating.
In any case, it is just your typical Komi volume, with a lot of teasing but not much actual progress, when it comes to Tadano and the 'love triangle'.
The second part of the New York trip was fine, with some fun moments, as per usual, and the ending could really be defined as a cliffhanger, in a way. Though, I have to say, come to this point I'm not really holding my breath for some real breakthrough in the next volume.
Finishes up the New York trip, and we get some majot forward motion with Manbagi here too! I'm kinda excited for vol 23, which fittingly comes out on Valentines Day :)
I think I've said this before, but this series is total lemonade to me. Like it's very pleasant and easy to digest, but I also understand that subsisting purely on stuff like this would rot my mind.
Anyway, reading a volume every two months or so is always enjoyable.
I love “Komi Can’t Communicate”. I was introduced to it via the Netflix anime and was desperate to know what happens in Komi and Tadano’s second year of High School. I was not disappointed! Komi’s goal to make 100 friends is such a sweet journey and Tadano is just the cutest character. I love characters that are shy and quiet because I relate to them more. Later in the series other characters are obviously introduced, some that I’m not too keen on, not because they are bad characters, I’m just not a fan of them.
The New York trip continues and we get more mini misadventures with various members of the class. This is a story with a huge cast of side-characters that never seems to stop growing and it can get confusing remembering who is who when we revisit them after so long! Still, even though some of their stories are a bit hit and miss (and I can never remember all of their names), it's always an entertaining read.
A few stand outs are Sweaty Girl and Diva Boi hanging out together while overprotective Germphobe Mallet Girl takes Komi along to spy on them. Tadano is partnered with Big Scary Dude who has a secret wee crush on the guy cus Tadano always shows him kindness despite his intimidating appearance. Ironically, the two of them seem to have the most romantic time together! Meanwhile, Manbagi has an interesting talk with Blank Face Boy who actually breaks character and cracks a smile.
However, the main focus of this story is all about the love triangle brewing between Komi, Manbagi and Tadano and the juicy drama that brings. So the group eventually find themselves in a Cathedral and with Komi's support, they leave Tadano and Manbagi alone so the girl can confess her feelings to him. Of course the others watch while hiding behind the pews. However, Komi finds herself struggling to remain neutral and flees the scene where she eventually hunkers down in a corner outside and silently despairs.
It's beautifully drawn with strong emotional impact because it's the most openly upset we've seen her since this storyline began. Poor Komi is truly suffering here and it would be soooo easy to paint Manbagi as the man-stealing villain on her behalf but she's really not. They are both extremely likable lovely earnest girls with a crush on the same boy and that's just a sucky situation no matter how it plays out.
Anyway, Komi is utterly inconsolable until Manbagi finds her, hugs her and confesses that she couldn't go through with it. She didn't want to risk losing both Tadano and Komi's friendship. And so the Status Quo of their little group remains unchanged...
For now.
It is later as they are flying back to Japan that Komi confesses to Manbagi that she feels horrible and unworthy of liking Tadano because she started associating him as a means to making friends and fears if she loses him, she'll go back to being friendless and alone like before. This is quite an intense revelation that not only reveals how vulnerable Komi truly feels but also how negatively she still views herself deep down.
Of course Manbagi nips Komi's self-loathing in the bud, whacks some sense into her and proclaims she won't be alone because they will always be friends and that she has many others who care about her. She then takes a stunned Komi over to the various classmates dotted around the plane to spend time with them and reinforce those precious connections she's worked hard to make. It's a lovely heartfelt scene and makes a fitting conclusion to this Class Trip Arc.
Time passes and through the lens of a fixed POV of the classroom we witness a typical day in the life of Komi and her friends at school. It's filled with the usual comedy that comes from such a madcap bunch of characters and things seem to have returned to normal. However, Valentine's Day is soon approaching and Manbagi tells Komi that this time she's going to tell Tadano that she loves him. This time although Komi is shaken, they both have a mutual understanding and stronger bond and Manbagi encourages Komi to step up as well like she's doing. This ends on a cliff hanger and marks an important turning point to the story. Will Komi find the inner strength to work through her crippling social anxiety disorder and finally confess to Tadano?
Despite Komi being my favourite, I find myself rooting for both of them!

➽ After the fun New York adventures, this volume brings a lot more emotions and drama. It starts with Manbagi announcing that she's planning to confess her feelings to Tadano. However, she wants Komi's blessing, as they decided to be fair to each other. It's a sticky situation, as Komi isn't ready to confess herself, but knows it isn't fair to stop Manbagi because of that. I really felt for her, as it's hard to say no to a friend, especially if you're an anxious person. Initially, Manbagi plans to get paired up with Tadano to explore the city, but chickens out at the last moment. Instead, we have a lot of fun pairs to visit around New York. Tadano and Katai are taking a horse ride together, and I love how their outing had so many romantic vibes. Manbagi confesses to Kometani what she initially planned, and I liked how kind he was to her. Meanwhile, Ase and Naruse end up together, much to the annoyance of Isagi. It was hilarious to watch Komi and Isagi sneakily follow them. Naruse is way over the top, but Komi was right to say that Isagi should trust her friend's judgement!
➽ The ending of this volume definitely packs a punch. Manbagi decides to talk to Tadano while the others make themselves scarce, but can't bring herself to follow through with it. She feels guilty because she knows how upset Komi is, despite trying to hide it. It broke my heart to see Komi huddled outside, as she couldn't stand to watch. Manbagi comes to comfort her, and later, Komi reveals why she's so upset. She's afraid of being boring again and losing the friendships she built if she's no longer as close to Tadano. He helped her find her confidence and embark on this journey in the first place; he means a lot to her. I like how Manbagi told her that her friends will never simply abandon her and that she'll always be there for her. I love their friendship so much, almost more than the romance!
➽ In the end, Manbagi says she has not given up on the confession. With Valentine's Day coming up, she's planning to use another chance to talk to Tadano and advises Komi to think about what she wants to do. I'm already nervous about the next volume, as I have no idea how this will play out. I don't ship Manbagi and Tadano, but I don't know if Komi is ready to talk about her feelings yet. At the same time, Manbagi can't wait forever and has the right to express her emotions. It's a tough situation, especially as the girls are best friends and have said multiple times that they're not giving up their friendship over a boy!

However common and mute the striations of teen affection experienced during out-of-the-way trips such as these, sometimes it all comes together quite nicely. Naruse (narcissist) and Ase (sweaty girl) enjoy some time together. Isagi (germaphobe) is reminded of the importance of emotional vulnerability. Manbagi (gyaru) gambles (and fails) to be true to herself. Kometani (stoic commentator guy) laughs. KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v22 tracks the ups and downs of several characters, and the resolution for each is well-earned.
The school trip to NYC concludes with numerous humbling moments for Komi and her pals. The most pressing of which involves Manbagi's open secret about her plan to tell Tadano that she likes him. Never mind the fact that Mr. Average already knows (as does most of the class). But as time dwindles and the pressure mounts, Manbagi feels stuck. She adores Komi as a friend, but doesn't want to betray her, and she couldn't stand losing Tadano should their pairing not work out. The problem complexifies, of course, because Tadano likes Komi. And yet, no matter how kind and understanding Mr. Average says he'll be when it comes to matters of the heart, love tends to narrow one's view of what's important.
This volume is a solid showcase of how Manbagi's growth permeates so many other characters in the manga. For example, when Komi dashes out of scene, huddled and alone, nobody know what to do. Except, Manbagi comes flying in, complete with hugs and sobs and apologies. Isagi hesitated to console Komi because of her fear of interpersonal contact (and hates herself for it). Elsewhere, Kometani, while out shopping with the gyaru, lets down his guard down while talking shop and bursts out laughing at the sheer silliness of the girl's clumsy romantic efforts. The manga team's surprise use of an alternate (softer) art style when the guy is genuinely having fun is a nice treat.
KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE v22 offers subtle hints that the group is increasingly prepared to break apart once more, as their second year of high school nears its end. But before they conclude their latest romp, a few final words articulating a few final emotions need be said. Hopefully. Maybe. Rumiko Manbagi is still blushing.
I picked this up as part of my continuation with this series. “Komi Can’t Communicate, Vol. 22” continues to follow Komi and her friends during their high school years. In this volume, Manbagi has decided she wants to tell Tadano that she likes him, but she is worried about what he will say. She is also worried about what that might mean for her friendship with Komi. I think it is highly endearing that Manbagi and Komi are so concerned about what the other thinks and wants. Both girls clearly like Tadano and would love to be in a relationship with him, but neither is willing to sacrifice their friendship to do so. They really do care for each other’s feelings, and it is great to see! I am very curious to see what Tadano’s opinion on these matters are. Right now it is kind of difficult to determine who, if anyone, Tadano would reciprocate feelings for. Hopefully the next volume will shed some light on Tadano!
I’m enjoying the series, and love the quirky interactions between various characters. I do find the format of some chapters being out of chronological order to be confusing, and it’s hard to keep the timeline straight. I also think the love triangle is being drawn out a little too long, and I’m not convinced that Tadano is so oblivious that Rumiko likes him (at the point she’s asking him for advice). It’s a little frustrating that they are…taking turns as if this is some weird contest that has to be completely equal - it’s such an unnatural thing to do, and also is making Tadano seem wishy washy when he’s sort of obliviously in these ambiguous situations with both girls. I’m really hoping Valentine’s Day wraps it up. I know it’s cliche, but I’d like him to end up with Komi, as that’s the obvious pairing.

The last few volumes of Komi have been so endearing and sweet. I really love Rumiko and Komi's friendship and how much they care about each other's feelings and don't want to jeopardize their friendship for Tadano. I loved seeing everyone on the trip in New York. I loved seeing how close everyone has gotten. I also really enjoyed the scene where Komi opens up to Rumiko about her insecurities and how she thinks of herself, and seeing Rumiko completely squash those thoughts and showing Komi how many friends she has made. I thought it was done really well, plus the scene where Rumiko attempts to confess to Tadano.
I'm really interested in seeing how the confession scenes go in the next volume, since I'm pretty sure that Rumiko is going to officially confess, as well as Komi.

So this is the set-up volume for the Big Reveal all those who have not yet given up have been waiting for. A social anxiety manga series where we wait forever to see if the manic Manbagi or Komi will actually express their true feelings for Tadano. And Manbagi promises she will. In the next volume.
The occasion for this volume is a trip to Manhattan, where we experience almost nothing of the city whatsoever, as a lot of talk happens, in preparation for Valentine's Day. But the talk is good talk, the various characters are all poised for this moment, and some have a stake in it. And there are also minor character romantic reveals coming, maybe.
This series has been so cute so far but I am getting so bored of the main story narrative with Komi-Tadano-Rumiko. The last chapter in this is the best one by far because it gives us a peek at the kids in their classroom throughout the school day with a fixed perspective.
I’m definitely considering not keeping up with this series anymore because it’s just gotten too long for me now. When I was younger, I probably would have been fine with the 10+ volumes but now…yeah, I dunno about that.
Probably the best part of a love story is the getting-to-know-you phase. Komi and Tadano were in that phase in the early volumes and are still there as far as I'm concerned. Tomohito Oda seems to have lost interest in them and is paying attention to the surrounding characters. I do not find them to be interesting.
There are 8 more volumes in this series; 5 are not yet available in English. Once volumes 29 and 30 appear, I may see if I want to read them. I'm not interested in the side stories.
I was so hopeful and I was also so emotionally confused! I’m really rooting for Rumiko and Tadano, and after some things that Komi said is it really love?
Also why showing a side of Kometani with Rumiko? It makes me a wonder if there is a hint of something else in line for her…
You see I’m all confused 😐 can’t wait for the next volume.
So close yet so far. On the second year trip, Komi and friends are in New York! This trip was great to stir up the love triangle, almost at the climax of confession.
Overall, the volume was enjoyable. Didn't like it as much as the last trip. Even then it was fun and super duper exited for the confession. THINGS ARE FINALLY HAPPENING AFTER 22 VOLUMES!
4.25/5 This volume continues the New York trip arc. We get some excellent moments with the characters that advances their relationships. Manbagi and Komi continue to try and figure out their feelings for Tadano while Manbagi wants to tell him how she feels. This manga continue to be an endearing story with characters it is easy to care for.
