In the wake of KING'S RANSOM, Spidey's journey takes a BIG turn. The revelation of GIANT-SIZE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: KING'S RANSOM was huge, but you don't understand half of what it actually means. But you should know that the Chameleon is making his biggest play ever as THE CHAMELEON CONSPIRACY begins here!
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Nick Spencer is a comic book writer known for his creator-owned titles at Image Comics (Existence 2.0/3.0, Forgetless, Shuddertown, Morning Glories), his work at DC Comics (Action Comics, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents), and for his current work at Marvel Comics (Iron Man 2.0, Ultimate Comics: X-Men).
3.25 stars. Spencer was picking back up some old threads in this issue. Since he can be sooooo slooooww with developing his arcs, these threads were from like 30-40 issues back or more. Was having a hard time trying to remember them.
This is an improvement on how Amazing Spider-Man has been for the last few months. We returned to some dangling story threads from the Clone Conspiracy, and even reaching all the way back to the 90s storyline featuring the robot Parker parents. And hey, has anyone been wondering what happened to Teresa Parker, the surprise sister? She's back.
This was a relief. A delightful nod to continuity; both the recent and the distant kind.
A solid start to the chameleon conspiracy. There were a couple of panels that were drawn really well (tho the art is good overall). Interested to see the different threads come together
So, Betty Brant is back and pregnant; the father is none other than Ned “previously died but got better” Leeds. I really wasn’t a fan of the faceoff between Chameleon and Teresa Parker, if Spencer is trying to change gears and take this character through an arc, he’s got some way to go yet. I am also not thrilled at the bringing Doctor Octopus back if he’s really going to be returned to the exact same state as he was prior to the events of Superior Spider-Man (first vol. by Slott), I loathed the most recent short run of “Superior” in which Marvel essentially hit the reset switch on Otto. I hope Spencer has chosen to write a more nuanced version of Otto and not the caricature version of classic Ditko era once again. All that Otto has gone through the past few years he deserved the evolution and change of motives.
I really dig art by duo of Ferreria and Gomez.
