Sweet story of a clueless heroine who has put her emotions on ice for two years since the death of her fiancé. She knows that her fiancé's brother wants to marry her, but she can't muster the energy to put him off. Thankfully, the hero (a 'South American') shows up in their small Scottish village to scout out cattle. He is obviously besotted and the heroine is oblivious.

Par for the vintage course.

The charm of the story is not the plot, but the descriptions of the village and the manners and mores of sixty years ago. There's a wanna be OW, a persistent OM, a mountain rescue, a Highland ball and lots of walking in the cold.

Just a nice story.

Book Description

The death of her fiance Alec, just before the wedding, had been a tragic loss, and afterwards Verona had had to go away and try to forget. But time had healed the wound, and now she was ready to return to her Scottish Highland home and pick up the pieces. It was good to be back, to see all the old familiar places and people, and fit back comfortably into the old life. But could she really go back entirely? Alec's mother, old Lady Mackinnon, seemed to think so. She had always wanted Verona for a daughter-in-law, and as Alec did have a younger brother, Ewan, there seemed, she reasoned, no real obstacal in the way of a happy solution. But Verona was none too sure - especially now that the disturbing Don Alvaro de Mendosa had come to stay in Glen Torran....

An ok read. I thought all the Scottish dialect and Spanish pet names were too much for a book of this size. Rona was clueless just about everything. I thought I was going to hate her fiance's brother, I didn't; He was actually a decent guy. I believe if Rona made her intentions clear instead of running away to Paris, she would have made his life much easier. Don Alvaro's maturity were decades ahead of Rona.

I am a huge fan of this author's work, especially her Australian Outback stories. However, this one didn't quite work for me. Unlike her other heroines, this heroine was a bit annoying. She allowed herself to be manipulated by everyone and went around most of the time in a fog. Hero was a bit scrumptious, very debonair and charming but was definitely wasted on the cardboard heroine.

Also, the ending was a bit too convenient and abrupt for my liking.

This was an ok read, but this author has much more enjoyable stories.

What can I say it’s a Harlequin romance. You’ve gotta love how they can wrap up a haphazard love story in the last 20 pages, and Amanda Doyle does it expertly. I do love her romances.
