The nationally bestselling “twisty, electrifying” (Karin Slaughter, #1 international bestselling author) Hayley Chill series continues with this novella following the former Washington, DC, intern as she faces a violent uprising at the United States Capitol.
During the course of one terrifying and chaotic day, nativist forces stage a violent uprising by storming the Capitol. Authorities are unprepared to protect the nation’s elected representatives as the country’s citadel of democracy is breached in what appears to be a spontaneous insurrection.
Hayley Chill, in the building for other business, does what she can to rescue a powerful senator and his staff. But in doing so, she discovers shocking evidence that the uprising had its beginnings with one of the country’s long-standing overseas enemies. With no one else to trust, Hayley must prevent as many deaths as possible while also chasing down foreign operatives across the city before they abscond with what she understands to be critical national intelligence.
Choosing to sandwich a novella between two of the major Hayley Chill novels, Chris Hauty recounts the story of how a single day almost led to the end of the American Republic. Told with his usual sharp wit and attention to detail, Hauty provides the reader with something entertaining as the action is kicked up to a new level. Perfect to bridge the second and third novels in the series, there is a little here to tide the reader over before returning to the explosive story that kept readers in awe.
After visiting a friend in the hospital, Hayley Chill has a plan to make her way to the Capitol to watch a motion pass in the Senate Chamber increasing sanctions on the Russian Republic after their puppet fled the US presidency. Along the way, she notices that something is brewing, led by a large contingent of white supremacists. After seeing the power of a group determined to cause trouble, Hayley is taking no risks and rushes to alert the authorities.
When Hayley enters the Senate building, he hopes that she will be able to forewarn those who need to protect the area and those working inside. However, the insurrection soon gets out of hand and spills inside, causing chaos and mayhem as things are destroyed. This is the perfect opportunity to strike, as another group has plans to dismantle America one brick at a time. Once Hayley realises the ruse, she must work to neutralise both groups before all is lost. All this on a single day in DC. A great story that kept the action high and the politics flowing throughout.
While there is no doubt that Chris Hauty got the idea for the novella from the January 6, 2021 insurrection, he made it work with is own themes. I recently returned to the series and found myself unable to stop reading the Hayley Chill books, which are full of politicising and great action. The narrative flow, even for a novella, is great and kept my attention throughout There are some wonderful characters who emerge, adding depth to the story and helping to connect things ahead of the third novel. Hauty offers some plot twists that help keep the reader on their toes and provides them with something entertaining as they pass the time reading this piece. Some character and story arc developments are present here, adding to an already strong series. I am even more determined to push onward with the third novel now, eager to see what happens next for Hayley Chill.
Kudos, Mr. Hauty, for this much-needed deviation in the series. It added much and kept me wanting even more.
Too Soon Perhaps for Stolen Valor? Review of the Atria Kindle eBook (January 4, 2022)
SPOILER WARNING: Insurrection Day provides key details, including information about the culprits and the twist endings, of the previous Hayley Chill thriller novels Deep State (2020) and Savage Road (2021). It should not be read before those books.
Although the events in Insurrection Day are fictionalized and take place in a completely different context, they are obviously inspired by the actual January 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capital. That left me with mixed feelings about the exploitative nature of the novella, especially when say, certain heroic real-life actions by Capital Police such as Eugene Goodman, are ascribed to Hauty's protagonist Hayley Chill. It is fiction of course, but some things just feel like being 'too soon'.
There are also the further combined effects of an annoying writing tic, where Chill is constantly described as a (see Spoiler Warning above) every 2nd page or so (61 times in this 117 page Kindle novella) as if we are going to forget that key backstory to her actions, and finally an Unsatisfactory Ending Alert ™ , about which I won't say anything more.
After the midway point, the thriller does settle down firmly in the Chris Hauty universe, when the real culprits are revealed and Hayley Chill works to prevent what she perceives as a vital intelligence data breach. The military factoids are all well researched as well, which I thought was impressive. Still, with those other problems, I can't rate this any higher. It probably does make for a good lead in to the next full-length book, Storm Rising (expected May 3, 2022), based on the synopsis that I've read.
Trivia Estonia, a regular straw man under attack in the previous books and a regular item of interest of my personal heritage, is NOT mentioned in this novella.
ebook Review – Chris Hauty’s novella, “Insurrection Day” is a fast-paced, action-packed short story incorporated with Hauty’s “Twisty” trademark game-changing twists. The novella is a hard-hitting Hayley Chill short story from one of the most creative minds in the thriller genre in author Chris Hauty. It takes a real event – the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol - and thrusts protagonist Hayley Chill into the middle of the action. This short story matches the intensity and thrills of Hauty’s two other novels – it’s a quick and captivating read! Although it is fiction, Hauty’s talent of storytelling leaves readers no doubt about the intent and actions of the rioters from that day. Loved the narrative and anxious for “Storm Rising” – Hauty’s third full novel - out this summer.
Did not finish. Life’s too short to read bad books. I loved Deep State. Book two was ok. After attempting this one, I’m not sure I’ll read book three. I rolled my eyes far too many times to finish this one.
Insurrection day is the Hayley Chill "fix" that fans need in January (the first two novels were released in January 2020, 2021) since the release date of Storm Rising has been pushed to May 2022. While it isn't necessary to have read Deep State and/or Savage Road to appreciate the novella, it definitely helps with the back story and character arcs.
The novella is somewhat inspired by the events that took place at the US Capitol on 01/06/2021, although it is a work of fiction. We are reminded of the awareness that Hayley Chill has of her surroundings and of the "bigger picture" on a geo-political scale. We are also reminded why she is the female protagonist that has cemented her place in the echelons of Thriller greats dominated by males.
Without giving away any spoilers, I will say the ending was a little of a let down, yet it also preserves some of the humanity that makes Hayley so great.
I definitely recommend this. It is a quick read, yet has the feel of a full length novel.
Excellent short novella involving Hayley Chill told over one day. A bunch of White Power radical groups decide the protest and then overrun congress (think January 6th). Hayley is inside and is helping to get everyone to safety. While doing this she comes across some Russians trying to steal a variety of electronic devices from the congress people. It’s up to Hayley to retrieve the items before the Russians escape.
Very good for a novella. Lots of action and suspense with a little intrigue at the end to make me wonder if there is more to the story that will be hashed out in book three, Storm Rising. Mr. Hauty definitely knows how to write a thriller, even if it is a short novella. Be sure to check this and the rest of the series out.
Wow. What a fast read. It was blazing from the first page. Chris Hauty gives you a first person shooter type of view of a mob ambush of the US Capitol building and the events that happened. Hayley Chill is back at it, this time navigating her very own political nightmare with an ambush around every corner. Great read that is quick and action packed. Reads like a 400 page novel, packs the punch of a short story. Highly recommend!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Just not long enough. Anything Chris Hauty puts out, I'm reading immediately. He's brilliant and this was a brilliant 100-odd pages, recreating the Capitol riots. Can't wait for the next Hayley Chill adventure!
Better than most .5 novellas. Weaving Chill into something so recent in our history was a cool idea by Hauty. She’s an original, outstanding character. Looking forward to the next one.
With one of the most controversial events in our nation’s history as the backdrop for this fictional story, Insurrection Day is not a novella for the faint of heart. Hayley Chill is back in action, hunting down her enemies with the wit and grit we’ve come to love. Chris Hauty remains the undisputed champion of plot twists in the modern thriller game and this story does nothing to loosen his grip on that title.
Insurrection Day proves yet again that Chris Hauty is one hell of a storyteller and that Hayley Chill is one of the best, toughest and smartest protagonists in the genre.
Chris Hauty brings the stellar Hayley Chill back in a quick-paced novella playing off the political protests of January 6th. Utilizing the confrontational political environment plaguing the United States right now, this will hit a little more than most political thrillers normally do.
After two fascinating reads from Hauty in Deep State and Savage Road, Hayley Chill is found reeling from a failure of the most epic proportions. Russian interference in American politics in the form of President Monroe forces a closer protection of politicians and the scared positions that they hold. While violent protests are taking place across America, a major uprising at the Capitol building in D.C. forces the eventual evacuation of American lawmakers.
Chill just happens to be in the Capitol when protestors start storming the building leading to a constant head-turning escape that leads through numerous locations. After stumbling across Senator Rittenhouse being protected by a single USCP officer and a few support staff, Chill assists in leading the group to relative safety until the Senator realizes his laptop of seemingly significant importance has been left behind. As Chill teams up with Officer Gomes to return to the Capitol building to retrieve the prized technology all hell breaks loose. The unimaginable happens on United States soil and death surrounds Chill at every corner. The worst case possible is happening and she must act quickly to prevent any damaging information from coming to light. As protestors run wild in the Capitol, foreign operations of espionage are in full swing which require steadfast dedication and action immediately.
Chill is a badass woman with phenomenal skills who fights for what is right while everything is crashing down around her. Chill’s keen awareness and unparalleled devotion paired with Hauty’s intense storytelling may leave you wanting this novella to magically become a full-length novel. It will hold you over though until Storm Rising releases later in May of 2022.
After reading the reviews and synopsis of the short story, I thought this would be a rehash of the January 6th fiasco, luckily it turns out that Hauty only uses it for the basis of a well crafted thriller that pits our favorite deep state operative against three Spetznaz killers. Russia has been interfering in the American political system, in fiction as well as real life, and has used white supremacists to cover for an infiltration into the secure phones and computers of the Congressional leaders but fortunately our heroine Hayley is all over it. She's still adrift because of what she has learned about her beloved father and the inherent distrust of the people she's working with in the deep state only makes her sense of foreboding more intense. I was concerned that after the reveal in the last book would mean Hayley would succumb to become just another analysis that wouldn't be listened to, but that's been put completely to rest, Ms. Chill takes a back seat to no one. I am impressed with the writing done by Hauty, I am truly concerned about Hayley and what will possibly happen to her, something I don't often do, which is connect emotionally with a fictional character. I now will be moving to the next installment in her fast moving narrative, these chronicles are quickly becoming a favorite of mine and I look forward to getting deeper into whatever Hayley will be jumping into.
Chris Hauty takes the Jan 6 events in D.C. off in another wholly unexpected in his novella “ Insurrection” , featuring Haley Chill. She is a deep undercover agent used inserted in the White House by a shadow group of retired military and intelligence chiefs whose aim is to protect the US. In this version, the actions at the Capitol recreated here in this book, go way beyond fact- but that is the author’s aim. Here the entire thing was stage managed by the Russians with the aim of crippling the US at the top. Moreover, it is not only have the Russians spread disinformation, they were actively using the internet, suborned news organizations and politicians to increase racial , economic and social disorder and hostility. The author puts a lot of thrilling action scenes in a short book. It is all very believable. By the way, in my opinion reading the previous books in the series is necessary to have an idea what preceded events in this book. Nevertheless, it is a definite must-read.
I may be mistaken, but I THINK Hayley Chill may be a deeper state operative.
Good lord. We get it, she’s a BLACK LIST operative, I do NOT need to be reminded Hayley is a deeper state operative in what seemed like at least once a page. She/her/Hayley would suffice. Give the phrase a rest.
61 times the phrase is used……in 121 pages…….SIXTY ONE.
My review would have been a five star if not for the "problem" mentioned above. I have enjoyed the Hayley Chill series and look forward to Storm Rising, but I pray that the deep state operative moniker can be curtailed. I am not sure I will be able to make it though an entire novel with the phrase being mentioned so often.
I have read all the Hayley Chill.books, This was the best. This time our resident superwoman deals with an attack on the Senate by So-called American supremacists. The thinly disguised January 6 attack is handled graphically vividly and with a clear understanding of the craziness that categorised the real insurrection. For once the book didn’t go overboard about Hayley’s past and family but concentrated on the action adding a foreign element. The surprise ending impressed me. I was girding my loins for the inevitable Hayley verses the Russian superman but instead the author found a great way to finish the story. 4 stars. Keith Hurst
Chris Hauty dropped a nice little surprise on us with Insurrection Day. Haley Chill finds herself caught in the middle of an uprising in our nation's capital and not everything is as it seems. With no backup it's up to Haley to find out what is really going on and stop the perpetrators. This novella has all the twists and turns we've come to love in Chris Hauty's writing and does not disappoint. Do yourself a favor and set aside an afternoon to read this one because once you start you aren't stopping until the last page.
Hayley Chill is as engaging and entertaining as ever. In the wrong place at the right time, Hayley becomes involved with the takeover of the capital by white supremacy zealots. Infiltrating the vandals, Hayley finds Russian operatives and mayhem. She begins a cat and mouse game to find answers to why and what. Why are the Russians present and what caused the riot. As always Hayley’s actions keep pages turning - especially when adding plot twists and likable secondary characters.
“A government of laws, and not of men.” - John Adams, 1774
Kudos to the author for quickly churning out an interesting novella and tying the main character and her storylines into that awful day, shockingly and seamlessly. It’s quite distressing to relive it, albeit in fiction.
“The repercussions of [the Russian asset’s] cataclysmic presidency continue to thunder across the nation’s capital and country beyond.”
“It’s as if someone wants a riot to occur.” Indeed.
Myself, like most, were surprised by the release out of the blue of this latest Hayley Chill story by Mr. Hauty. A fast paced, fictional first person account of the events of 6 January 2021 that could easily be real. An entertaining and fun read to hold those over waiting for Storm Rising.
Its been a while since Chris Hauty gave us STORM RISING, so I was excited to get a small taste of Hayley's unique skillset. She does not disappoint! It's a great conspiratorial take on recent actual events and also a reminder that I should really read the first two novels again; to be ready for No. 3!
Chris Hauty asked in history where would you want to see Hayley Chill. I went back to George Washington. But Chris put this novella out with more recent events. Putting a plot around an attack on the US Capital and putting Hayley Chill right in the middle. Is anyone surprised as she shows her incredible skills to save the USA?
Muddled, clumsy writing, incredibly repetitive use of the phrase "deeper state operative", stealing the basic action from the failed Trump instigated revolution of Jan '21, poor ending - stop me now before I reduce it to 1 star....
An action-packed novella featuring former White House aide and Deep State operative Hayley Chill. In this bite-sized tale, Chill comes across a Russian covert operation during a public Insurrection of Congress by White Supremacists.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
For what it is the story and writing are good. It feels like it abruptly ends though. Like it was written and published in a hurry without finishing the story. For that reason I've lowered my rating.
Very Good; Continuing character: Hayley Chill; in this novella, while white supremacists (of course) attack the US Capitol, Russians are in offices stealing secrets; its up to Chill to stop them.
