I liked this suspenseful romance. Did I have to suspend disbelief at the circumstances they found themselves in? Yes, but it made for a fun ride. Did I want the heroine to stop pushing the hero away? Definitely, but given the character, it also made sense. Did I wish the hero had more background? Also yes, but the personality/character traits that were there were right up my alley. Julia (h) works for a British security company and has taken personal leave to go rescue her grandmother and grandmother's BFF in Peru. Julia and Joe (H) work together and had a kiss (I assume in the prior book but I didn't read it and this does one standalone). Joe's pursuing her but Julia has many reservations about a potential relationship. In Peru, the situation rapidly spins out of control and they're facing down a cartel, with all the danger and chaos you can imagine. The attraction/Joe's pursuit also comes to a head. Written in third person, multi-POV of h, H, and their boss (who's the MMC of the next book). No ow/om drama and neither are virgins (the only history given is that h isn't a virgin but isn't very experienced).
I thought Julia made for an intriguing lead. She has hypersensitivity, OCD tendencies, and is extremely shy. But, she's also brilliant, observant, and braver than she gives herself credit for. She's the odd duck in her family so combined with her behavioral/personality traits she sees as faults, Julia doesn't understand why Joe would be attracted to her and views any potential between them as doomed. I felt sympathetic for her struggles, esp in adapting to what happens to them in the plot of the book. However, Joe is a former Marine, he's possessive, understanding, patient, and he's going to win Julia over, no matter how long it takes. They have great chemistry and tension, partially because Julia's constantly pushing back and once the steam does happen (slow burn), it's well done and I thought added to their emotional connection because Julia trusted Joe. I never got frustrated with Julia, but I think other readers might given the perception of weaknesses in her character and all the pushing away.
Plot-wise, there's a grandmother in prison, a missing BFF, a missing mummy that might lead to an Incan treasure, a cartel as an enemy, and all the danger. Joe and Julia do get back-up to help them, but there's a lot of action and violence along the way, a lot. There was also plenty of humor from the side characters and occasionally banter between Joe and Julia. Julia's grandmother was a handful and their team of co-workers who come in to assist all had strong personalities. Secondhand embarrassment was also a theme in this book, Julia ended up in several embarrassing situations that made me laugh sometimes, but also cringe. One in particular was a bit hard to read picturing. Their group does also poke their heads into the blossoming relationship between Joe and Julia, not usually in helpful ways.
The good guys do triumph and the leads do get their HFN/HEA (once Julia accepts all the love, I felt assured they'd stay together forever). The epilogue is only four months into the future so I did want a bit more showing their day to day, but it was a cute epilogue and it had some great humor in it with a scene involving Julia's chaotic family. There was also a sneak peek at the next book, which involves their boss, Callum, who is missing part of his legs and in a bad mental place following what happened in this book, because of the limitations he had at times triggering him. Even though I enjoyed this book, I wouldn't recommend it for all of my friends because of some of the parts I think would be frustrating for others, but I liked this author's writing style and it made for a great afternoon read so I could see myself checking out more of her work.
