This odd little collectible has some really interesting pieces in it! An Evening at Joe's is a collection of Highlander fanfiction written by the cast and crew who worked on the show, which already makes it a fun 90s collectible. It's so interesting and such a gift to actually see the actors themselves contribute little pieces about their characters. But also, I think its really fun and inspiring that so many members of the crew wanted to be included and had stories ready to go about their favorite characters.
I thought it was interesting that the actors mostly chose to tell their stories in the form of letters. Jim Byrnes (Joe Dawson) pens us letters that a younger Joe Dawson sends to his (never seen onscreen) sister and mother, during his tour of Vietnam. Peter Hudson (James Horton) pens a letter from his villain-character to Duncan MacLeod in which he tries to justify and maybe even redeem Horton. Stan Kirsch (Richie Ryan) gives us a collection of letters Richie writes to his friends from Heaven after the events of "Archangel."
Associate Creative Consultants Gillian Horvath and Donna Lettow give us Postcards from Alexa, another stand-out piece of the collection. Through a series of vignettes, they really take the time to flesh out a character who only made one appearance on the show, and her tender relationship with Methos.
I also really enjoyed the stories written in script-format. He Scores! by Producer Ken Gord is hilarious and Canadian. So Canadian. Like ultra-Canadian. It had me in stitches.

Movie/TV Tie-ins are usually little more than expanded, well-written fan fiction. Not that there's anything wrong with that (when it is well-written and the story is good). However, this goes beyond your usual tie-in.
All the stories in this collection were written by members of the Highlander series cast and crew. Props masters, sword masters, producers, writers, and actors all contribute tales ranging from extensions of series episodes to stand alone tales, origin stories and yarns from the afterlife.
What surprised me most was the strength of the writing of many of the cast/crew. Obviously one expects the writers/creative consultants to be talented, and for the most part they were. But some of the most impressive stories come from those outside the 'writing' profession. Props Master Don Anderson wrote a riveting account of Methos' early life through the disbanding of the Horsemen. Many of the actors wrote stories pertaining to their characters, breathing more life into them - in the case of one of the guest stars an incredible back story, like an abridged and better written version of The Fencing Master. However, Peter WIngfield's brief, slightly abstract tale is unrelated to the Highlander universe as anyone ever saw it and is painfully enchanting.
The standout, for me, is swordmaster/actor F. Braun McAsh's story of an immortal's time with Vlad Tepes (aka Dracula) which is revealed being recited by Methos to Joe. It is equal parts exciting, horrifying and entertaining, while being extremely well researched and very articulate.
Overall a good collection of stories for the fans, by the biggest fans - the dedicated cast and crew. The only downside is it really made me miss the show.

Read about 1/3rd of the stories. May read more, but I'm tired of this languishing on my to-read list. Overall, the stories are better than I was expecting.

Highlander fiction written by the cast and crew. My favorite is "Pants" and "Postcards from Alexa".

Great compilation of Highlander "fanfic" by the people behind the scenes of the TV series. Especially touching read - "Postcards from Alexa".
