Christopher Chance is The Human Target. Hired to be you, he takes the hit, dies, then gets up and takes out the killer. Except, after his latest job impersonating Lex Luthor, Chance discovers he’s been fatally poisoned and will die - for good - in 12 days. Can he find out who killed him in that time?

Tom King’s latest 12 issue series gets off to a rather unimpressive start with The Human Target #1. I don’t know anything about this character (it’s not like there’s been a plethora of books featuring him in recent years either) but from what I’ve seen in this opening chapter, he’s not that interesting.

So Chance is just a guy who wears armor and makeup - what’s special about him? Does he have any powers to help him recover from being hit? Can he disguise himself to be anyone or can he only take jobs for older white guys? I’m just wondering how he came to be in this line of work - there should be something to suggest why he took up this role. He just seems to be an ordinary dude who’s incongruously tangled up in the world of DC superheroes.

I’m a fan of Greg Smallwood and his art in this book is fun. He seems to be going for a ‘60s pop aesthetic with the colours and designs, maybe because Chance himself looks like a character you’d see in a ‘60s show. The tone and visuals reminded me of Darwyn Cooke’s Parker books - no bad thing.

King’s story didn’t grab me though. I don’t particularly care about whether Chance lives or dies and the mystery set up isn’t enough to make me want to keep up with the singles. Human Target looks like another dreary slow-burn like his Rorschach and, in that case, I can definitely wait for the trade. The Human Target #1 is an underwhelming beginning that’ll only really appeal to Tom King fanboys.

“Don’t call Batman. My murder, my mystery!”

The man who makes a living off of dying is about to go out of business. The human target has been hit and now he has 12 days to figure who did it and if he was even the main target.
I really enjoyed this first issue. The art and coloring are fantastic! If it doesn’t win some sort of award next season I will be very surprised. Lots of groovy vibes mixed with a fast paced murder mystery. This issue does go by very quickly but I am pretty hyped for the next. A very cool start, hopefully the rest of the series follows suit.

I missed these issues at the shop, but heard this comic is great, so I found a back copy of the first one. It's great! I never read the comic, but I loved the two seasons of the unceremoniously canceled 2010 show on Fox. I absolutely love that Tom King has integrated Christopher Chance into the wider DC Universe, and how he's done it. Also, the Golden Age Dr. Mid-Nite cameo--perfect!!

This is Tom King doing his best impression of Darwyn Cook's Parker and he does an amazing job of it. I'm loving the retro-50s vibe to this while it is still firmly set in the current DCU. I have no doubt the link to JLI is a red herring but I'm going to enjoy seeing how this plays out.

Phenomenal art! This comic is so beautiful it hurts!
As for the story, it's a solid start. If I'm truly honest I missed King's writing since his Batman run. I don't remember it always being great, but when it's good it's good.

Good start to a neo-noir murder mystery with a dash of DC comics weirdness.

I read this comic and just loved it. It has all the elements that make me want to read. There is mystery, adventure, action, lots of action, deception, and tons of twists. I cannot, for the life of me, remember why I picked the book up but I did and loved it. I like that it reminds me of all these clever detective and spy novels but grittier. The artwork is a throwback of sorts. It is 70's modern in a way, but better. The whole idea of telling a story from the point of view of a body double is genius. You have to love Chance. The characters that he runs into are unique and distinct as he tries to figure out who is trying to kill his client. I like it, as a story. I know it is connected to comics and superheroes but it is still a wonderful story. Absolutely loved it.

Came in knowing nothing about this but it looked cool and was in the DC app so why not. The art style was retro in a cool way and the story is fun. Basically this guy that you hire to get "killed" in your place is trying to solve the mystery around his death. Good first issue to stir interest.

Adorned by otherworldly art by Greg Smallwood, a heavily populated cast fills this noir with options and mystery. What a beginning. Very excited by this whodunit and whether the it will ultimately get dun.

Spectacular kick off. This shines in so many ways. Art, story, and especially the concept of the "human target. " On my pull list, and looking forward to the rest of the series. Great covers!

Do yourself a favor and skip this series if you're a fan of old JLI characters, in particular Guy and Ice, since the author grossly mischaracterizes them.

What would you do if you knew that you were dying? Chance is going to solve his own murder and it’s already leading to a doozy.
