Savage Magic

The acrid smell of burning flesh brings bile to my throat as I creep silently from my hiding place. The world I know and love is destroyed. My home for twenty-two years; my entire life is gone, and the bodies of the people who shaped the witch I’ve become are burned to nothing on the pyre set by the witch hunters. Some of the dead are still lying on the ground, blood covering their bodies, making their features almost unrecognizable. Among them, I see our high priestess; the leader of our coven and the one who helped me the most to learn about the magic inside me. Her once beautiful features are marred with bullet holes now. My stomach turns, and I bend at the waist to vomit its sparse contents over the ground.

A well written story - the witch escapes and tries to start a new life. Would have been much higher rated but had an unforgivable abrupt cliff-hanger ending.

I read a copy of this story that was included in the anthology Call of Magic: A Limited Edition Collection of Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romances. The following is a slight edit my original review there:

This story followed the with FMC Gaia after her coven was murdered by witch hunters, and she was left as an only survivor. She ended up teleporting herself to a crippled MC Luther, who had a rescued pet dog and a secret history as a witch hunter. The story ended when both of their secrets were revealed with a big cliffhanger. Since I couldn't see any sign of a full book release as of Aug 2022, I couldn't rate this well.
