Vampire Hunter D Omnibus: Book Two

Rate this book
A new omnibus collecting volumes four, five and six of the Vampire Hunter D horror novel series!

The hunt continues in the bizarre far future of 12,090 A.D, where the immortal vampire lords who were the only winners of mankind's nuclear war still oppress the human survivors who have pushed the blood-drinking fiends back to the lawless Frontier. Yet humanity too remains as quick as ever to prey upon itself, and where the law can't bring safety or justice, the crescent blade of D will--assuming you meet the half-vampire wanderer's price!

A wondrous floating city, long a drifting sanctuary against marauding creatures, has its peace violently shattered by invasion...a village where humans and vampires live in harmony hangs upon the endless sleep of a beautiful dreamer, bitten decades past by the undead Nobility...a wizened crone named Granny Viper with a reputation for recovering abductees on the Frontier finds she's chosen the wrong allies in rescuing a young girl. These are only the beginnings of the strange adventure stories into which steps Vampire Hunter D!

The Vampire Hunter D Omnibus Book Two collects volumes four, five, and six in author Hideyuki Kikuchi's adventure horror series: Tale of the Dead Town, The Stuff of Dreams, and Pilgrimage of the Sacred and the Profane. Illustrated by Final Fantasy artist Yoshitaka Amano, the legend of D endures!

"Neither great nor small are we / Off into the distance we go, only to be born again / and thus are we called the far wanderers"

These books are everything to me. At once imaginative, cinematic and poetic. Steeped in melancholy. Dramatic as hell. But not everything is all doom and gloom - there's comedic relief whenever it suits the story best. And it never feels corny or out of place, either. This was just incredibly satisfying to read from start to finish.

D is still such a flawless and overpowered character, but Hideyuki Kikuchi also wants you to think of him as a multi-layered, complex antihero. And he does it really well. D gets called cold and callous a lot in this one - but most people who look into his eyes see profound, insurmountable sadness. And whenever they do take a closer look, they don't envy his life, because however capable or good looking he might be - he's still utterly lonely, left with little joy in life.
But he still offers a radiant smile after everything is said and done. He does the right thing (most of the time...) even when he could just sulk and leave everyone to rot. We even learn a bit more about his own objective and origins.

I'm completely obsessed with these books, they ruined me for pretty much everything else. I have to physically restrain myself from reaching for the third book, I'm not even joking. Reading and reviewing them feels like getting something heavy off my chest, especially when I have no one to talk to them about.

And I'm incredibly grateful/ecstatic/overjoyed that they're still putting out these Omnibus Editions. Sometimes you find the one thing meant for you and it feels like a piece of heaven.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to return to the world of Vampire Hunter D. The blend of horror and action in a futuristic western setting is very captivating. Hideyuki Kikuchi is very vivid in his writing, but never clunky or awkward. The cover and illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano are gorgeous. All three novels in this omnibus were great, especially book 6. Whenever D rarely expresses the faintest hint of emotions, that part of the story is usually just gold. I can't wait to read the next omnibus/

Kocham tę serię całym moim nieobiektywnym sercem.
No i uważam, że te części, zwłaszcza 5 ("The Stuff of Dreams") i 6 ("The Pilgrimage of the Sacred and the Profane"), są o niebo lepsze od pierwszych dwóch powieści z Omnibusa jedynki. Od trójki ("Demon Deathchase") być może też, ale ciężko mi ocenić - mam do niej zbyt dużą słabość.

Vampire Hunter D, Tale of the Dead Town - 4 stars
The shortest novel so far but it really packed a punch. I was intrigued from the very beginning. It had more twists and turns in the story than the first three; a pleasant surprise. Love this author can continue a story while still keeping me on my toes. Gave me “Laputa: Castle in the Sky” vibes but, ya know, if it were a horror film.

Vampire Hunter D, The Stuff of Dreams - 3 stars
This one didn’t capture my interest as much as the others. The concept was very interesting; do vampires dream? But it turned out rather boring. But I suppose vampires cannot be interesting all the time. Although it was interesting to see D up against an actual challenge. Until this point, D only needed to solve mysteries. Once he knew who the target was or what had happened, he knew what to do. In this story, he doesn’t. It’s all new territory for him so again, interesting to see a different side of him.

Vampire Hunter D, Pilgrimage of the Sacred and the Profane - 2 stars
Like “The Stuff of Dreams”, it didn’t hold my interest. Even with the interesting concept of a sentient, impassable desert. The whole book had major western vibes. I know this world is set in a futuristic frontier but I felt, for the first time, the overall vibe of the novel had traditional western feels (books or movies. Take a little of both). Not a bad thing but I felt this book stepped away from the first five novels spirit-wise.

This Vampire Hunter D Omnibus contains some of the best stories so far. While the first story, set on a flying city, was just the average D fun, "The Stuff of Dreams" was wild in the way it dealt with dreams and, subtly, meta narration... but it's the final story, "Pilgrimage of the Sacred and the Profane" that shines the most. Here, we get more glimpses of an overarching plot than we've had for quite a while, all the while getting to know D's emotions a bit more intimately. Not only that: the surrounding cast is also very well portrayed, with memorable characters that become more and more involved as the plot thickens. I also particularly enjoyed the plot twists, which were many, but expertly placed throughout.

I think Vampire Hunter D is an interesting equivalent of Conan the Barbarian, an anti-hero in a series of "rocambolesque" adventure stories, who tells very little about himself, but keeps ending on top of every situation, although the way he saves the day is often bittersweet. It's a manner of writing fiction that's a bit old fashioned now, and that's why I think it deserves its place in the field. D's world is so far from us, that it takes us several books to start to understand it, and that's also part of the fun: the author gives out very little, and only bit by bit, and pleasantly so.

I had to give this book 4 stars as it clearly reflects that the author Kikuchi improved significantly on his writing. The writing is still not entirely perfect, however you can see with each story that he is really came into his own. The “Pilgrimage of the Sacred and the Profane” story was by far the best in this omnibus! I highly recommend people try this novel out as it is a significant improvement from the first omnibus. I will say that some of the action sequences can be a disheveled mess, I found my mind wandering at times. There also still the overuse of D having a “beautiful countenance”, I believe we all know by now that D is attractive. If you can get through some of the rough parts of the book you will definitely have a good time!

Like the first omnibus, this book struggles to keep me interested for more than its first volume. It’s unfortunate that the volumes are so drastically inconsistent. None of them have close to the first volume in terms of quality, but I didn’t mind the dead town, and even parts of the dream, however the final volume was just a dull affair, all in all these stories are too long for their own good, and they aren’t really about anything I find particularly interesting. I have two more omnibuses, but I doubt I will get to them anytime soon. I’m a little over this series, as I have found the quality too infrequent to be entertained by. Plus the volumes seem to get bigger as the series goes.

I really like this series. The first Omnibus book was on my wish list for quite some time. I was able to purchase it this past Christmas. I devoured that one and then purchased omnibus books 2 and 3. It is very mysterious and just overall different from the books that I normally read. The author paints a fantastic picture of a dystopian society formally ran by Nobles. I am hoping to collect the remaining books.

I continue to be surprised at how good these are. These stories go beyond the two anime movies that people (such as myself) might be familiar with, and continue the horror/sci-fi postapocalyptic world building that make these such engrossing stories. Highly recommended.

The disparate stories give a certain depth to the world but come off as repetitive and slow. There are kindlings of an overarching story which is exciting to follow. D’s journey is as arduous as the readers'; I am looking forward to the series opening up beyond these initial stories.

Very creative and well written. I liked this one. It's a fair length but worth the read.
