Rate this book
Audrey Adams would do anything for her aunt Ernestine. When Ernestine suffers a stroke, Audrey takes a leave from her fast-track CPA career to care for her. Only Ernestine’s hobby farm needs more tending than the patient herself. Audrey’s bitten off way more than she can chew, or harvest, or plant, or… How does one do hobby farming, anyway?

Enter her neighbor Rowan Marshall, the sexy cider maker. Rowan’s only too happy to come to Audrey’s rescue. Which is all well and good until Audrey realizes Rowan’s angling to buy the orchard that makes up more than half of Ernestine’s pride and joy.

It’s not long before a reluctant truce gives way to a romantic spark and forces Audrey to make the biggest decision of her life.

Greener Pastures by Aurora Rey is one of those feel good romances that takes you away to a lovely world and leaves you satisfied when you finish reading. The story even has two baby goats (Bert and Ernie) that I just fell in love with. I can’t help it. I’m a sucker for baby animals.

While I consider the book to be fairly low angst, there are moments in the story that will definitely tug at your heartstrings. After all, the tale begins with Audrey Adams having to take leave from her high powered CPA career in New York City to care for her aunt’s hobby farm after her aunt has a stroke. Audrey knows next to nothing about taking care of a farm, and especially the animals. It’s a good thing that her gorgeous butch neighbor, cider maker Rowan Marshall came along when she did. The two start out as friends, but due to a few misunderstandings, things turn rocky quickly. The spark that has ignited between them can’t be denied for long though.

The setting of this novel is very important to the overall story, and the author really plops the reader right down into this world with her descriptions. I see the beauty of the land, smell the scents of the farm, both good and not so good and hear Ferdinand’s crowing every morning at 5:30. Then there is the taste of the cider from the apple trees in the orchard, and the food that comes from the garden, Yum! I want to live on this hobby farm.

The two main characters are easy to love and are perfect for each other even if they don’t realize it for a while. The secondary characters are equally well-described.

This story is delightful, with some steamy love scenes included of course. This is a book by Aurora Rey after all. I totally enjoyed reading this novel, and recommend it to all who love a good femme/butch romance.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.

Greener Pastures is a sweet low angst romance. CPA Audrey takes a leave of absence from her fast paced career in the big city when her Aunt Ernestine suffers a stroke and is no longer able to look after her hobby farm. Arborist and owner of a growing cider business, Rowan has been helping out Audrey’s Aunt on the farm. Rowan has also been buying her neighbour Ernestine’s apples and they have a gentlewoman’s agreement that Rowan will eventually take ownership of this orchard as a thank you for her help over the years.

I would call this a fish out of water romance but Audrey is up for the challenge of farm work along with her Aunt’s menagerie of animals/pets. She may need a few pointers but this friendly neighbour Rowan is more than willing to assist and teach the chartered accountant in exchange for a meal or two from Audrey. They hit it off and share their mutual love for Ernestine along with some romantic vibes neither can ignore. The expected miscommunication comes early with Audrey flipping out assuming Rowan is taking advantage of her Aunt. Part guilt, part concern, it’s not long before Rowan and Audrey are once again sharing meals and pondering their futures.

This is a feel good romance with a small amount of angst and a bit of soul searching. It’s a light and quick read, a nice escapist romance. Food, new career possibilities and baby goats.

‘Greener Pastures’ has been one of my favourite summer romances so far; sweet and sexy in equal measure. Audrey has to look after her aunt’s farm after she has a stroke and although Audrey would do anything for her aunt she is a city girl without the first clue about hobby farming. Cue the cute neighbour, Rowan, who offers to lend a hand.
Of course there are a few bumps along the way especially when Audrey finds out Rowan has a business arrangement that doesn’t seem all that official. I loved the back and forth between these two women and the tension is so much fun to read. Rey is one of the best at creating a light hearted story with characters that quickly gets under your skin. I also love the balance throughout this novel where the two women grew independently as well as a couple, plus the payoff moments were so gorgeous too.
Beautiful setting, dynamic characters and baby goats; everything you could want in a summer read.

I'm in need of fun and easy romances and this one fits the bill, sort of.

Audrey is a high-powered CPA who is yanked out of her element when her aunt suffers a stroke. Audrey leaves her job in New York to go upstate and tend to her aunt's hobby farm. I didn't even know that was an actual thing, this has me now contemplating finding my own hobby farm. Anyway, she is out of her element but as luck would have it the next-door neighbour, Rowan is a bit of a night in shining armour. Audrey isn't very trusting of her, they do have an instant attraction.
The way the story plays out is nice and easy, with some bumps along the way. It might even be a little too easy, but I don't care, it's what I needed right about now. What did get on my nerves every so slightly was some misspellings and while being in third person POV the switch between Audrey and Rowan wasn't always smooth and just pulled me out of the story. It just felt a little off at times.

The overall story is quite low angst and easy, a little too good to be true and too easy. Whenever you are in the mood for such a thing this is the read for you.

If you need a book that is warm, sweet and just makes you feel all good inside, Aurora Rey is the author you should seek out to fill your satisfaction for a really good read. I've read many books by this author and I've not been disappointed yet. In Green Pastures, you'll meet the two main characters of the story, Audrey Adams and rowan marshall. The chemistry is there between the couple, but Audrey does slightly get on your nerves halfway through. All in all Greener Pastures is a good Sunday afternoon read, it's not my favourite by this author, but it is still a good read if you're wanting something ‘light’ to read on a Sunday afternoon.

I've given greener pasture a 3.7 / 5

You just can't go wrong with a romance from Aurora Rey. She is so damned dependable for a butch/femme opposites attract romance and I think I could read one every week and be happy. This is a variation on the "grandma left me her house" trope, but add in the Easter eggs from previous books and this one is a do not miss.

Rey starts with a funny cute-meet and once again delivers a sweet with a bit of steamy Butch/Femme slow-burn romance. Keira Grace does a great job with the narration. Oh...and there are baby goats!

ARC received via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a nice, easy read from Rey. It features MC Audrey, who works in finance in Manhatten, but has to look after her aunt’s hobby farm after her aunt has a stroke, and Rowan, who owns the property next door and runs a cider business and is friends with Audrey’s aunt, Ernestine.

Both MCs are sweet and likeable, and hit it off pretty much from the start. They spend a lot of time together by virtue of the set up and Rowan helping Audrey find her feet on the farm. There’s a bit of miscommunication at the beginning around Rowan’s intentions towards Ernestine, but it’s managed pretty quickly. After this the two settle into a relationship that’s sweet and brings out the best in both of them.

There’s a few side characters, including Ernestine, Rowan’s business partner Dylan, and some town’s folk, but no one is particularly fleshed out. Most of the book focuses on the MCs and their interactions, which are mostly pretty damn cute. I also enjoyed watching Audrey fit into the town and Rowan’s life. Unfortunately, the end includes more miscommunication, which is a repeat of the previous one and didn’t need repeating, and the usual angst of ‘will she stay or will she go’, which as is typical of these types of stories, is never really in doubt. There’s a nice epilogue to tie everything up though.

The ending doesn’t detract from this being a nice, sweet romance, so if that’s what you’re after, this should hit the spot. 4 stars.

Rey has written a book using a familiar trope, i.e., a successful businesswoman is asked to step up to assist an elderly family member and ends up having to decide whether to return to her big-city life and her career. However, while the trope has been done before, no one has done it better than Rey in this book.

Audrey’s great-aunt, Ernestine, has had a stroke and as her only living relative, Audrey must leave her job in Manhattan and travel to a small town near Rochester. Just after arriving, she finds she must take care of her great-aunt’s small hobby farm. Ernestine’s near-neighbor, Rowan, finds Audrey trapped on top of the chicken coop by a small flock of chickens. Rowan steps up to teach Audrey how to care for the farm animals and Ernestine’s small vegetable patch and flower garden. From there, Audrey learns about another side of herself she had no idea existed.

Rey has written two strong and likable characters and added two talkative baby goats to give her readers an excellent read. The storyline is not new, but it hasn’t been better written.

This book is at the top of my best of 2022 LesFic list. If you’re already a fan of Rey, you’re going to love this book. If you’re new to Rey’s body of work, this is a book that will immediately make you a fan of Aurora Rey.

“In her sleek black pants and silky blue blouse” Rowan Marshall finds Audrey Adams “trying” to feed the chickens. Audrey has taken a leave of absence from her CPA job in New York City, to come help her Aunt Ernestine on her hobby farm, who has had a stroke. Upon learning this news, Rowan the neighbor cider maker, offers to help Audrey the “city mouse” with the farm chores.

Rowan and Audrey have dinner together most nights and get to know each other. Audrey learns that Rowan buys Aunt Ernestine’s apples to make her cider. After visiting a newly awoken Aunt Ernestine, Audrey learns that Aunt Ernestine has an agreement with Rowan to buy the orchard for a “fraction of market value.” This doesn’t sit well with Audrey. Especially after learning about a joke Rowan had with Aunt Ernestine about her will.

Audrey fly’s off the handle to say the least. Audrey took a conversation between Rowan and her Aunt the wrong way. Even though, her Aunt asked her to just get to know Rowan and she would see she is really a kind loving person. It was truly a case of miscommunication at its finest.

Rowan does try to talk to Audrey, but the communication at this point doesn’t go well. Audrey does reach out to Rowan when she finds herself in a jam and needs help. They go back to having dinner and things develop from here.

As the story develops, Audrey helps Rowan with her business. You can see throughout the story how they would be really good for each other. They also shared a great love for Aunt Ernestine. They just can’t seem to get it together. This is a slow burn. Will Audrey and Rowan make it, or will Audrey run off back to the city?

The author did a marvelous job making you feel like you were there on the farm and cider mill. The descriptions of both places are wonderfully written. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

This is a feels good romance between big city CPA Audrey and country girl turned orchardist Rowan. Audrey’s aunt has suffered a stroke and she comes to the rural country town to help her out with her hobby farm.

The goats in this story steal the show. Indeed, it would be fun to have a hobby farm with a few animals like a donkey and a goat. A farm dog a few barnyard cats too.

I could relate to the dialogue between the MCs and showed both points of view. There was a small amount of angst and a bit of push/pull between both Rowan and Audrey. Overall this was a nice sweet romance with a bit of heat.

ADORABLE!!!!

Audrey is a CPA with a big deal company. When he gets a call that her Aunt Ernestine has suffered a stroke, she drops everything to be with her and help out on Ernestine’s hobby farm. It’s a bit more than a bit overwhelming, and shes in over her head… Rowan is a cider maker and is Ernestine’s neighbour. Both women love the land and have become close friends. The pair have an agreement with the older woman’s orchard. Since they both love the land and Ernestine is impressed with how much knowledge and love Rowan has for the trees, she has decided to let the cider maker buy it, but for now she tends to it and harvests the apples. When Audrey shows up, Rowan is happy to help out with and teach Audrey about the animals and the gardens. Things are great, for a while… When the accountant finds out about her plans for the orchard, she accuses Rowan of trying to take advantage of Ernestine. Eventually a truce is reached and romance is in the air. However, its not long before Audrey has to make some huge decisions that leave the budding relationship in jeopardy….

I LOVE Ms Rey’s books and this one is one of her best. I ADORED Audrey and Rowan. Both are sweet and complex. I loved watching Audrey learn about the farm and how she settled into the community with ease, even though she is a city girl. I loved how Rowan is so dedicated to her company and I really loved the animals, especially the surprise baby goats! There could have been a LOT more of them and I would have been in heaven but the antics that were shared were enough to make you say AWWWW!!! I liked watching Rowan and Audrey become friends then more. They are a beautiful couple with so much going for them. They worked so well together and had some really special moments. When the inevitable happened I nearly cried for the pair’s loss. I wanted Ernestine to be more involved and maybe come home and give the couple feigned trouble as I know she loved them both a great deal and was the kind of woman who would have teased them and caused silly trouble. Alas, it was not to be. Everything seemed to be easy to figure out for Audrey, but she wasn’t really ready to be a farmer and live the country life. Her home was in the city…and I cried for the loss of what could have been. Ms Rey isn’t one to let her readers suffer for long and soon enough things righted themselves, YAY! This is an EXCELLENT book with lots of drama and romance. It is one of her best works as far as Im concerned. And its one that I needed to experience more than once. I bought the audiobook so I could listen to it on my commute every day. I love this book and I can see myself reading it again and again!

Sweet, cosy romance

Audrey meets Rowan when she comes to help on her Aunt’s farm while she is being cared for following a stroke. At first, Audrey is suspicious of the arrangements she learns Rowan has with her aunt, but when she learns more about Rowan, gets to know her better, and starts to understand Rowan’s plans involving her aunt’s land and Rowan’s cider business, feelings for Rowan force Audrey to rethink what she wants from her life.

I loved this, it was sweet and romantic but with a touch of tension and a little comedy drama. The tension between Audrey and Rowan was great, not instant but born during their getting to know one another and as a result built in uncertainty to the story that I wasn’t expecting. It was great how Aurora pulled you into a light-hearted meeting and connection between them, then very realistically threw and spanner in the works to unsettled you right alongside Audrey. It was so easy to connect with her because her suspicions and sudden wariness of Rowan came on naturally and in a most understandable way.

There was a lovely sentiment behind the story though, one of friendship and kindness, working together to achieve dreams and goals collaboratively, and importantly held a message of trusting one another and being adaptable. Kindness played a big part in this story, as well as being empathetic and understanding. Rowan embodied all of this. She was a good person, with dreams and hopes, and luckily for her a kind woman in Audrey’s aunt who took a chance and wanted to help her so they would both benefit.

I was hooked on this from the very first moment and enjoyed it so much I couldn’t put it down. It had everything I want from a romance and everything I have come to know and love in Aurora Rey stories. Definitely recommend this amazing story and for romance readers, it’s another must read!

If you want an easy, feel good romance, this is just the ticket. Audrey Adams is a CPA in NYC and loves her work. But when her aunt Ernestine has a stroke there is no question she’ll take leave and head to the Finger Lakes. She is there to see to her aunt and care for her hobby farm complete with chickens, goats and a large vegetable patch. There is also has an orchard but Ernestine sells her apples to her friendly neighbor, Rowan Marshall, for her cider making operation. This is a fun butch/femme story and I like that although Audrey isn’t skilled at farm work she is pitches in and does her best.

Of course Audrey and Rowan hit it off with a few hick-ups a long the way. They share, friendship, work and lots of sexy times. The book really focuses on the two and side characters are fairly limited. The biggest obstacle they face is knowing that there is an end time in the future when Audrey will return to NYC. If you like sweet characters, plenty of heat and low angst you’ll enjoy this book. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Audrey rushes to Finger Lakes to be at her aunt’s Ernetsine’s side following a stroke. The hobby farm her aunt owns comes with chickens, goats, sheep, veg patches and an orchard. Cue Rowan, the cider maker hottie next door, who has a deal with Ernestine in regards to the orchard. After a smooth introduction, spark fly but are of anger, as Audrey believes her aunt is being taken advantage on. The shift from that to aplogies happened to sudden for me and there were some descriptive passages that made the read a little sluggish at times but it’s a good book as usual from Rey and I have enjoyed reading it.

I cannot put to words how much I enjoyed this book. It's got all the sweet romance you can get on the countryside with the bonus of being at a cidery so often it makes you taste the cider on your tongue while Rowan explains how it is being made.

So this is a typical businesswoman goes to the countryside and falls for the hot neighbour with some added cute scenes in the mix like what happened in the chicken coop or with the goats (trying to remain spoiler free here because it's more fun to read it for yourself).

Rowan and Audrey are a joy to read despite them not always voicing their thoughts and feelings. It never gets to the point where it is so frustrating you want to shout at them. Just the occasional eye roll.

To be honest I had a lot of feelings reading this book and it's made me come to the conclusion that I want to be like Ernestine some day. No, honestly this is such a great and smooth read, I finished it in one sitting as I could not put it down.

Audiobook listen, and once again, Rey has this amazing deft touch with writing butch lesbians who have zero toxic masculinity, but instead the butch masculinity is... supportive, helpful, competent. She's a master at this.

One thing that you can always count on is that Aurora Rey will give you a satisfying read. Greener Pastures is the latest of Aurora Rey's sexy and sweet stories.

I will not give a in-depth synopsis, as you can find that easily elsewhere. Rowan and Audrey are a wonderful butch/femme couple who don't exactly see eye-to-eye when they meet, but gradually come to an understanding and decide to explore their mutual attraction. They agree to keep it casual, because Audrey will be returning to her life once her aunt's estate is settled. But the best-laid plans go awry.

I recommend reading Greener Pastures.

A big city, professional woman comes to the countryside to tend her aunts farm - what is not to love when clueless city-girl meets a butch farmer. And even better when she gets quite mad with said farmer and sparks fly? Add to that adorable baby goats, the beguiling rhythm of living outside the big rush of a big career and the city and you get a sweet, slow-burn romance. At the end it slows maybe a bit too much, but yet again it might be balanced by great sex and more beguiling life on the slow and rewarding side. Another ode of Aurora Rey to the delights of country-living.

A refreshingly wonderful romance. A city girl accountant on leave from her job to take care of her aunt's small farm after she's gad a stroke meets a cider-maker, and although they start out on a bumpy ride, they soon can't deny theiir attraction. Low angst, beautifully written and a delight to read! Only one thing: I want to hear more about these two!

3 stars. I needed something light and fluffy and while this was definitely both of those things I didn’t absolutely love this unfortunately. The writing was really good. This was my first book by Aurora Rey but I will definitely be reading more.

It was the main characters that I didn’t quite connect with. Audrey was a wet mop of character and she was just so bitter and borderline unlikable. Rowan was a pushover and I hated how much she bent over backwards to please Audrey. Also, these two did not know how to communicate to save their lives. It was maddening. However, I did like their romance. They had pretty good chemistry and this is a sweet love story I just wanted more from the characters.

Lovely easy read. I loved the premise and setting. The fish out of water and from different worlds attraction always has great potential. I also have a soft spot for goats and cider.

The lack of communication between the two MC could be a bit grating but can’t complain when you land on HEA.

Really enjoyed this book, feeling in need of a holiday, reading about a woman moving to the country to take care of her aunt's 'hobby' farm was lovely and soothing. There is also a butch/femme romance in the midst of the book, which is low angst, but fairly believable angst too, with big city cynicism meeting country friendliness. I found the main characters likeable and well rounded, I like the way that new possibilities were explored and the other friendships that were also shown. Thoroughly recommended for low stress reading especially if you like animals.

Baby goats!!!

Aurora Rey is one of my favorite authors. Her stories have chemistry, love, passion and laughter. I greatly enjoyed this book and will definitely be reading it again in the future. I love the references to previous characters and glad to see them pop in. There was some angst throughout the book, but remedied quickly and satisfactory. The baby goats made me smile and laugh at their antics. This was read all in one day because I couldn't put it down.

Aurora Rey does not disappoint

Another excellent read! Although there's a sad story line in this book, I found that overall it was very well written. Rey seems to do such a good job developing her characters and their relationships. It never seems forced or "too soon." Her descriptions of the finger lakes region makes me miss the area and want to plan a visit. This book will leave you wanting an ice cold cider and a baby goat.
