Elementals Academy #1

The Discovery of Magic

Rate this book
Welcome to Elementals Academy, where magic is the only hope of survival, forbidden romance beckons, and an ancient secret threatens to end it all.

Summer Donovan thinks paying her way through her expensive private college is her biggest problem.

She's about to find out how wrong she is.

Because when the president of the most exclusive sorority on campus goes off the rails and bullies her, Summer defends herself with something she never knew she had.

Magic.

It turns out she's a witch. But that's only the start of the surprises in store for her.

Soon after her magical breakthrough, Summer learns she's destined to attend Elementals Academy-an exclusive school dedicated to witches descended from the Greek gods.

At Elementals Academy, Summer finally finds the thing she's wanted her whole life: a place where she fits in. Although that doesn't last long, thanks to her magic not working the way it's supposed to, and no one knowing why.

But her biggest challenge isn't schoolwork. Or magic. It's Zane Caldwell-the iciest, most attractive, and most mysterious student at the school. Despite the way Zane's warm to her one minute and cold the next, Summer feels an irresistible draw to him.

While struggling to understand her feelings for Zane, Summer soon discovers she has another problem-one far more dangerous. There are secrets lurking within the hallowed halls of Elementals Academy, and she may hold the key to unraveling them. If she can survive long enough... and figure out who to trust.

I read the prequel series to this one way back in 2017 and really enjoyed it, so I was excited when I found out that the author was releasing a new series! I received an ARC of this book and started reading it straightaway! After reading, I can say that I enjoyed this book a lot! It had me intrigued right from the first page and it held my interest all the way through! It only took me a few sittings to read as well! The plot developed at the perfect pace and it did a brilliant job at setting up this series and what is going to happen in it! There wasn't lots of action and suspense in this book, but I can definitely see some as this series progresses! There was also a hint of romance in the plot and I'm really excited to see it develop further! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Summer was the main character, and in this book, and in this book she went through a lot! She discovered that she was a witch and her life was uprooted to a new environment! I think that Summer handled everything well and she wanted to know more about her power and what kind of power she had! I liked Summer a lot and her attitude to the changes in her life! Zane was the love interest of Summer! Zane was a very intriguing character in this book and I really wanted to know more about him and his background! I didn't learn a lot about him in this book, but I got to learn little things! I'm excited to find out more about as this series progresses and so does his relationship with Summer! This book was only written from Summer's point of view! I have to admit that this did surprise me a little because this author's books normally have quite a few different point of views in them! I think the prequel series was only written from one character's point of view though, so it makes sense to keep this one the same! It also allowed for mystery around the other characters and I enjoyed it only being written through Summer's eyes! I now can't wait to read the next book in this series! The ending of this book was left at quite an ending and I can't wait to find out if there's any truth to the big reveal! It says the next book doesn't release until September, but I know that it will release sooner than that! I'll definitely be reading it once it releases and I can't wait to find out what's going to happen next for the characters! I also love the cover for this book a lot! It really suits the book and what happens in it! It also matches the covers for the prequel series as well, which I love! It would draw me to the book as well! Big thank you to Michelle for an ARC of the Discovery of Magic!

This is the beginning of a new series set in the same world as Michelle Madow's previous Elementals series. It's not necessary (at least not so far) to have read the first series to enjoy this one. There will be a few Easter eggs though, if you have read it. Since Elementals was the first series I read by this author, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

But this is a new story, with a new heroine. As begins many of the epic hero tales, our main character has no idea that she possesses special powers. Her magic manifests suddenly in a moment of panic, and she has no idea how to control it, or even really how to summon it. But it's definitely there and it's definitely strong. She's whisked away to an academy where she can learn how to use it, but she's already miles behind all her classmates, some of whom grew up knowing their heritage. She has no idea about the mystery surrounding her birth. But she's about to find out.

As usual, the characters in this story are compelling, and once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Since the worldbuilding already happened in the previous series, this story simply expands on it. When the elementals first discovered their power, they also had no "playbook" and had to figure things out for themselves. Now they have created a school to train the fledgling witches, so they can hone their powers. And of course those powers are hereditary since all the kids are descendents of the Greek Gods. Mythology and fantasy combine to create an exciting world, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

I volunteered to review an ARC of this novel.

Elementals academy is a new book from Michele Madow in the world of Elementals. Where I was obsessed with all the greek mythology and magic I can feel that same excitement with this book again. In the start of the book the northern light and Norway are named. This made the book even more special to me. This because I am currently in Norway and saw the northern lights.

Michelle Described it soo amazingly and the story line is to die for. The way she let's the elementals series become a part in this new book made me extremely happy. I can already sense that this is gonna be a new series that is gonna envelop me.

This book is about a girl called Summer. She is recruited for the elementals academy after something strange occurred to her. At the academy she meets Zane a boy from the water element. What does he want? Who is he? and most importantly Who is Summer? A lot happens in this first book, it is a amazing page turner, love the storybuilding and the characters.

I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion of this amazing book.

I don’t even know what to rate this lol. It was interesting-don’t get me wrong, and I was throughly entertained and invested but if I’m being honest, I just really didn’t care about any of the characters and the book was just too short. Also the last 50 pages was just WERID. And super rushed. Also the writing style was a bit odd to me. There was like no description at all. Also the font was like size 200! It was very entertaining though… somehow! 😅
I’m going to rate it a 3.25⭐️ because I don’t think this is going to be a book that I’m going to remember unfortunately.

This was surprisingly good. I'm not sure it would be classified as YA because the characters are in their 20s, but it doesn't fit NA either (little to no spice).

** Slight spoilers ahead, you've been warned **

Some of the tropes:
1. Hidden destiny - our MFC was adopted as a baby and has no idea magic exists until one night she has a burst of power
2. Political intrigue - in a YA manner, nothing too complex (yet)
3. Fated mates - this is not super developed within this first book, but the two MC's recognize each other as soul mates.
4. Greek and Norse mythology - it's interesting to me (whose not a mythology expert) to learn what supernatural being belong to each category.

... And more

What did I think of this book- not much. Possibly one of the worst books I’ve read for a very long time.
Not only was the magical universe created by the author completely unrealistic, the storyline was so fast paced that it was laughable. Elements such as students of the school being handed a limitless credit card, the headmistress of the school being roughly the same age as the students, the main character attending approximately 1.5 lessons the whole time she’s there are to name a few of the cringeworthy, childishly-written moments of the book. And it seemed like the whole plot took place within about 3 days, during which the main character (who the author does not let us forget is perfectly beautiful every two minutes) falls in love with the mysterious bad boy who of course is deeply and historically connected to her.
I think someone needs to shake the author and tell her to let go of her Percy Jackson fanfiction fantasies. How more books were written in this fictional world baffles me, and how people enjoyed this book baffles me even more.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m already a Michelle Madow fan and have read the series that came before this. Although it isn’t necessary to read that first as this can be read as a single series.

Having already been introduced to some of the characters in the earlier series, it was wonderful to read about them as they are now. Their characterisations were consistent and fused well with the new characters we meet in this book.

My favourite things about the writing is how well paced the story is, how quickly you can escape into this world and how obvious it is that historical references and the myths/legends have been well researched.

I sussed Zane out pretty quickly but I’m ok with that, I don’t need everything to be a mystery.
After Kate’s thoughts on Summer at the end of the book, I’m intrigued to see how that plays out and whether their thoughts are correct.

A fun read

A fun Academy book about a girl who discovers she has magic. There was a mean girl at her old school but no real bullying at the Academy. The love interest is the typical bad boy who runs hot and cold with secrets of his own. No love triangle which is refreshing and finding out who she is is the focus of the story so far. If you like magic, Greek mythology and witches then give this series a try.

3ish stars. Not really in a reviewing mood. This was entertaining, but also not wholly original and some of the world building etc was clunky. It was an easy read, but I’m not sure I’ll continue with the series. That said, I’m not sure I won’t continue with the series. 😂. If you’re in the mood for pnr academy style romance where the heroine discovers she has magical abilities, you could certainly do worse. And bonus, it’s available in KU. This definitely reads more YA/NA compared to adult.

The story should make you move forward but unfortunately it's just a book that has multiple scenes from other books. I had high hopes of getting in but nope! This did not do it for me. It's unrealistic even for a magic school.

I’ve read all of the books in the earlier Elemental series and enjoyed them a lot. But Elementals Academy, the first book, seems to have been written a much more professional author. Plot and story were great, and the characters are interesting and I cared about what happened to them. Didn’t catch any spelling or grammatical errors, so that’s a big plus for me! I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to several sequels. If you like magical fantasy books, you should really enjoy this one.

I'm so excited to be revisiting the Elementals world and it was fun as a reader to see how it's been going for past favorite characters. That said, this series can definitely be read before the original one. There's still a month to go for the release date and it took me less than a month to binge it so if you're reading this review before the pub date you have time to read them first.

That's the thing about Madow's writing style: every book in every series is a binge read. I cannot set her books down and it's always a joy to get lost in the worlds she creates. The Elementals Academy was no different and the MC was really relatable. (For those who've read the Vampire Wish, she reminded me a lot of Annika) The friendships also rounded out the book. It's nice to have a friend with a voice reason to help pull you out of making choices out of hormones. Learning more about other mythologies was cool too.

If I had anything a little meh about it, was how the love interest treated the mc in some parts. I'll just never be okay with using manipulation as a tactic for any reason. Oh, and the twilight references were a little too strong for my tastes. But that's a personal preference because I really disliked Edward Cullen. These two things are only enough to bring it down to a 4.5 rating, but since I read it quickly and became immersed in the book I'm rounding it up to a 5.

Thank you for the advanced copy, this is my honest review.

Summer is working and going to college until one day when a Sorority President attacks her because she thinks Summer is after her boyfriend.
Somehow Summer turns the attack around and knocks her out without touching her.
Two people show up and tell her she is a Elemental Witch and for the protection of her mom, best friend and herself she needs to leave and go to a Elemental Academy.
She doesn't pass any test to show what kind of witch she is and it's never happened to anyone before.
She gets the attention of a hot guy, Zane but he runs hot and cold.
Summer and her roommate are attacked by a monster that shouldn't be there and her and Zane are attacked by someone he knows.
Can she keep Zane's secret without endangering everyone at the school and maybe they've found out who her powers came from.

A good read!

Like the Eternals series that came before, this series involves witches & demigods, descendants of Greek gods and goddesses and continues on from after our heroes saved the world and they have established the school.
Although YA, and possibly not aimed at persons of my undisclosed age 😜 I found the story easy to follow and had already worked out the origins of some of the characters, based on my knowledge from the Thor Marvel film lol.
Definitely worth a read +book 2 can't come quick enough and the 1st paragraph had a few clues as to where the story goes come September when it's released.

I read this book as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription (free book but I pay £7.99 a month for the subscription)

Michelle Madow writes books that are more than just fun to read, she creates worlds that you will live inside while you read the series. She provides just enough detail to completely place you into the story and into the scene but not so much to bore you silly. This series is set in the Elemental World seven years after the last series and is about a young lady who may or may not be an elemental witch. As so many YA novels start, our heroine has not a clue that she has any special powers or is any way different from her "human" classmates. Suddenly, she has something that brings her from one elite school to a school for specific persons with more than normal abilities. This academy is for elemental witches. If she is one, she is like no other at the academy. Get the book and get ready for a fun, late afternoon read.

Grabbed from the first page and never let go until the end, this book is a fantastic read with great characters and lots of action. Our main character, Summer, having been bullied discovers her magic and is now sent to Elementals Academy where she finally feels at home. But something goes awry and the author spins a tale with many threads deftly woven into the first book in this series. Can Summer unravel the secrets at the academy, figure out what is going wrong with her magic and what is happening with her and Zane. This is a great beginning of a new series and I can't see where it goes from her. I really liked this first book. I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I LOVED IT! I honestly loved this one more than the original elementals series and I was so upset that it ended. The plot was amazing and it unraveled perfectly. I really enjoyed it. And that ending. Aargh...what is it with you and cliffhangers Michelle. Seeing Kate, Nicole and Blake again was also a lot of fun. Summer was a pretty awesome MC too and I can definitely relate to her. Also I kind of loved Zane. Probably more than I should’ve given his situation. His coldness to everyone made so much sense. I’m already dying for the next book in the series.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

After a couple of unexplainable happenings, Summer is told that she is a witch, and is whisked off to the Elementals Academy. There she works to fit in, make new friends, unleash her magic, avoid getting killed by monsters that keep cropping up .... oh, and the new hot boy Zane she can't stop thinking about .... is he friend .... or foe?!

Great start to the new series. And so fun to see some old faces from the original Elemental series. Looking forward to the next in the series!

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was so happy to see this world continued from Nicole's story in the Elementals series. It be a few years later and we are now following Summer as she is thrust into this unknown world of magic. Of course no book would be completely without a devastating handsome moody guy, Zane. With new unknown threats at her doorstep, unable to control her magic, and trying to traverse the new school Summer has her work cut out for her. The mystery of Zane had me on the edge of my seat till the very end. I can't wait to see what is in-store in the next book.

Summer accidentally finds she has magic when she is attacked by a another college student. Unfortunately, using the magic sent out a kind of beacon to mythical type creatures who want to kill her. She is rescued and taken to a new college which is nick named Elementals Academy, where everyone is capable of magic. She has an instant attraction to an extremely good looking guy, who is so cold and stand-offish that it wasn't funny. However, not everything at the academy is how it seems at first. She makes some good friends - and some enemies, but what's new.

It’s not really a surprise that I enjoyed this book. Like many here, I read the original Elementals series some time back, as well as Michelle’s other series of books (The Dark World) as well. I really love the combination of real life + fantasy, and with this one, it was even better than the original series. My only complaint is that I have to wait for the rest to come out! Oh well, I will likely reread them all again as I did with the Dark World Series after The Dragon Twins saga was completed. Very good work! Not going to give anything good away, but great twists as well.

I picked this book up and couldn't put it down. A good mix between fantasy & romance, Summer's journey to discovering herself and her new powers while she tries to figure out why the handsome Zane keeps invading her thoughts will have you just as hooked. I especially loved how well the book flowed with details. They put you in the story without being so in-depth that you wanted to skip sections. It is a series, and it ends with a cliffhanger. I definitely recommend having the next book on hand before you start this one.

Excellent story and I loved it. Summer is a great character and I really like her. Zane is also a really good character and I like him but I figure there is so much more to come about both him and Summer. Alyssa is the best kind of roomy/suitemate one could have and her character is really good. I enjoyed this book immensely and look forward to the next one in the series. I could say so much more but NO SPOILERS!
