St. Mary’s Rebels #3.5

Chemical Romance

Rate this book
Penelope Clarke is failing biochemistry and there’s only one person who can help her: Atlas West.

He’s the best tutor on campus, and if Penny wants to keep up her grades and her sanity, she needs him. After all, no one wants a repeat of what happened the last time her grades were at stake. Least of all Penny.

The only problem is that Atlas is extremely distracting.

His green eyes and his rumpled dark hair make her forget everything and daydream. It doesn’t even matter that Atlas can be a rude and arrogant jackass who pushes all her buttons.

But it’s okay.

For the sake of her grades and her fragile mind, Penny can learn to focus. And she’s well on her way to doing that, until Atlas makes a proposition – dinner in exchange for tutoring her…

This is a standalone novella set in the world of Heartstone

4.5 I’VE-GOT-YOU swoony stars

Gahhh! Chapter 6 was FIRE!!!!! Phew. SAK can grace my presence with novellas everyday if they’re gonna look like chapter 6. Jeeeezus 🔥🥵.

Penny has been dealing with her mental health issues, in this case an anxiety disorder. In the prologue, she passes out after receiving a failing grade in her bio chemistry class. Luckily, Atlas was there to save the day and picked her up in his arms to safety. She goes to Heartstone (psych ward) and meets Willow, Violet, and Renn. She has a treatment she needs to follow, and sometimes it means doing things she’s uncomfortable with doing. One thing is for sure though- she’s not going to fail again, and she needs Atlas to tutor her since he’s the TA in her chem class.

Atlas has always noticed Penny; well, he calls her Penelope because he loves her name. He wants to be a rock for her, to hold her, settle her, be her support, and he is so swoony🥰🥰🥰. Yeah, he comes off as a grump, but he melts when it comes to Penelope. He’ll be the tutor she needs, the ground and foundation she walks on, and the shoulder she cries on. This man is SWOOOOOONY!!!! I just love him 🥺.

The CHEMISTRY… I see what you did there SAK 😅😉😉 I see you girl. The chemistry is there💦. As per usual SAK fashion, every blink, every breath, EVERY flutter is felt. Good LAWD I love it lol. And the ONE steamy scene was 🔥🥵.

Oh and the fact that Atlas actually HAD been noticing and kind of *spying/stalking* Penny for a while had me loving him even more 👀🥰🥰🥰.

Of course, I wish it was longer!!! But I didn’t mind that we got the one sexy scene weeks into their relationship lol. But I wouldn’t mind reading some more 💁🏻‍♀️💅.

Now I need to read more about Renn and her boo 👀.

this was cute until i found out she ate paper💀 i was howling for about 20 mins straight and couldn’t take the rest of the book seriously afterwards, im sorry. call me a bitch it was funny, okay.

i would be in the middle of a somewhat intense or climactic scene and i would start giggling, visualising her shoving paper in her mouth.

This is the last book I read from the promo by some of my favorite authors who were giving out free new books in return for signing up for their newsletter & my favorite of all of them. I just read Charmaine Pauls's free book right before this, and it wasn't as good as her other books.

Atlas reminded me a bit of Conrad Thorne. Even though we barely know anything about his backstory besides his grade in college, career goal, and where he studies in the library, I really liked the story. It was cute!! I've noticed Saffron's latest books always have anal sex scenes (or in this one, a tease of it) because it was so short. Virgos are freaks like I always say.

I really am curious about Renn and Tristan and wish they had a book. The weird thing is that this book was listed under St. Mary's Rebels, and I was super confused because the school Penelope is at is not an all-girl reform school. Someone on Goodreads shelved it in the wrong series.

I tagged this book as college, but you don't really get a full sense of the college experience or setting in it. Like Saffron's other works, there are girl group scenes. I was impressed for such a short book we got multiple girlfriend scenes. In the beginning, it seemed like we were getting more scenes with her friends than with Atlas.

"And then we attack each other at the same time and seal our love with a kiss." reminded me of something MGK and Megan Fox would do.

The writing style in this one didn't bother me like "Hey Mister Marshall" did, but I really hope Saffron stops writing sentences like, "She also thinks that I need to do this. Ask for help, that is." or "....I mean." (That came up 29 times.)

I HATED this book.

For a book that's 99 pages, it didn't focus on the main characters very much throughout.

They actually need to have a good convo before they do something else and this book rather took time explaining to us the backstory of all the OTHER characters.

In a full-length book I would understand that but not in a friggin novella.

Also Idk man......why does SAK write one liners so much?

I’m going.

Or rather, I’m here.

At Valentino’s.

When twenty-four hours ago, I had no desire to go.

Well, that’s not true.

I did have the desire, I guess.

ANNOYING AS FUCK.

Hate the wierdly written inner monologues.

My book review disappeared so I thought that I lost the review, but it was listed under "Not a Book". I just had to recopy it. Crisis averted.

Rating: 4.5

Currently, the story isn't available on Amazon. When I first looked it up the band My Chemical Romance came up in the search results. That band pops into my head when I read the title of this book.

You can download the book for Free on the authors website:

I think the novella is still on Prolific Works for Free:

The story is told in dual pov

Novella with 6 chapters

Penelope Clarke (h) 20 years old Sophomore in college, pre-med student

Atlas West(H) 22 years old Senior in college, pre-med student

Safety Info:

Penny(h) is a virgin. Soon to be, “A clueless recent non-virgin.” Atlas is her first/only everything. She’s never had a boyfriend.

Atlas(H) no sexual history was mentioned. I’m sure he isn’t a manwhore. I’m pretty sure that he has been celibate for at least 2 years since he met Penny (At least that is what I choose to believe). He might have been celibate even before that because he was so focused on his studies (I choose to believe that). I love that he didn’t hook up with girls that he tutored.

No OM/OW drama

No cheating/sharing etc…..

The h has Generalized anxiety disorder and has panic attacks.

The story opens with a prologue that takes place a year ago. Penny passed out in her biochem class after receiving a failing grade on a test. The classes TA Atlas carries her to the health center. Penny was so focused on her studies that she didn’t pay much attention to Atlas until the day he rescued her. I thought it was very sweet that he carried her to the health center and waited with her. I really liked the prologue. Atlas was is swoony. He’s the whole package.

description

“You passed out. In class. I think you had a panic attack.”He looked down at me then. “But you’re fine now, okay? I’ve got you. I’m going to take care of you.”
He’s going to take care of me.
But why? Who is he?

description

“Finally, I close my eyes and rub my cheek against that cozy, warm chest.
Because he won’t leave me.
Atlas.”

description

The story flash-forwards a year, I guess Penny is repeating her biochem class since she was failing and couldn’t complete last semester. After the incident where Penny passed out, she was sent to Heartstone Psychiatric Hospital in N.J. She spent ten weeks there. Penny’s time at the institution wasn’t shown. There she was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

At the facility she made three friends, Willow, Violet, and Renn. I thought it was sad that Penny said she never had any friends before the three friends she made at Heartstone. The friends make an appearance in chapter 2 and some of their background is given. Apparently, Willow and Violet have books. I guess Renn will get a book? I’m curious about their stories, so I might check out their books

I was really mad about something Renn did.

Now Penny is in therapy and has been given tools to better manage her anxiety/stress. Unfortunately, Penny is once again failing biochemistry class. Penny is a perfectionist, so it’s very hard for Penny to ask for help. Both Penny’s siblings are doctors. Penny’s father is the Dean of Medicine at the university and her mother is the lead researcher at a pharmaceutical company. Failure isn’t an option for Penny. Penny’s therapist tells her that there is no shame in asking for help. Stepping outside one’s comfort zone can be a good thing.

Atlas, the TA for Penny’s biochem class, is the best tutor on campus. Penny wants nothing but the best. The two haven’t spoken since the incident last year and she never got a chance to thank him for his help. Atlas and his green eyes have been on Penny’s mind ever since he came to her rescue. I thought Penny’s internal ramblings were adorable.

Penny’s Chemical Reaction Guy:

“It’s a crazy combination that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, let alone myself. I mean, I don’t have time for these things. For these chemical reactions and their side effects.
But I can’t help it.
I can’t help that my brain and hence my body react in weird ways when I look at him.
Damn it.”

description

Penny gather’s up her courage to ask Atlas to tutor her. He just ignores her and acts like a jerk. Finally, he relents and says he will tutor her if she goes to dinner with him. It confuses Penny because she doesn’t know if it is an actual date or not. She doesn’t think he would ever be interest in her. This is out of the ordinary for Atlas because he never goes to dinner with girls he tutors.

I like that Atlas took his job as TA seriously and tried to be very professional. I think he might have taken his job as TA a little too seriously. Atlas had been pining away for Penny for two years and never asked her out on a date. They might have never gotten together if she didn’t ask him to tutor her.

Also, I thought it was cute how upset Atlas got over thinking that Penny didn’t know/remember his name. He was obsessing over her for two years.

“Say it,” he commands in a low, very low voice.
“Atlas,” I blurt out,
His eyes gleam with satisfaction and his lips pull up in a very small and very lopsided smile. “Good. Remember that for tomorrow.”

Atlas was so obsessed with Penny that he admitted to following her home a few times after she got out of Heartstone because he wanted to make sure she got home safe. He went to the library to see her too. I thought it was kind of sweet when it could have come off as creepy (ok maybe still tiny bit creepy when he first mentioned following her home).

I found it sweet when Atlas got so upset over kissing Penny because he felt like he forced a kiss on her. He thought that she didn’t reciprocate his feelings. All he wanted to do is protect her. He was really beating himself up over the whole thing. He tried to be a noble guy. Meanwhile, Penny was on cloud 9 thinking about the kiss.

“Plus I think my lips are…swollen.
From the kiss last night.
I think his-his all-consuming, breath-stealing kiss-has changed my lips forever. I think I’ll forever feel them tingling. I’ll forever be aware of how…need they can be.
Just like I was last night.
So novel and so strong.
But most of all, so wonderful.”

I love how protective and defensive Atlas is when it comes to Penny. Everyone knows about the incident last year and Penny’s stay at Heartstone. People avoid her and whisper “crazy girl” behind her back.

“I knew about her stay at Heartstone.
Of course I knew.
It was all anyone could talk about, and I wanted to pinch each and every one of them when they talked about her like she was some crazy girl who needed to be locked up.
She is not f**king crazy.
She is smart and brave and strong.”

description

Atlas really was the whole package. I thought the two were adorable together and had amazing chemistry. They reminded me a little of Lilah/Grey from Ashlyn Popes book Lilah. I think Lilah and Penny would make great friends.

I wish that the story would have been a little bit longer. I would have liked to see more of Penny/Atlas as a couple. I did enjoy the story and it was free. I wish that their first time would have been shown. They get together and it skips ahead a several months. Their chemistry was scorching in chapter 6. Atlas proves to be an excellent tutor in more ways than one. ;)

I wish that there would have been an epilogue. I would have liked a second time jump that was bigger. Atlas is supposed to go off to Harvard in the Fall, so they will have to do a long distance relationship. It would nice to see a little more of Atlas/Penny is Renn gets a book. Renn and Penny are roommates. Atlas is confident that they will make it work. It made me feel more reassured about their future together.

“I’ve waited a long time. You Understand? A long fucking time, Penelope. I never thought that I’s be here. That you’d be here. With me. I never thought that I’d get to touch you, kiss you. Be with you. Take care of you.”

One line made me think of Jon/Ygritte from Game of Thrones. (Hopefully with a happier ending).

“You’re mine. And I’m yours. And it’s about time you realized that it’s going to stay that way.”

description

"But I know one thing that he’ll keep me safe.
That I’ll be able to feel his arms around me like I do right now.
Because he’s mine and I’m his.
My chemical reaction guy.

considering saffron is one of my top authors, feels weird it took me so long to read this. Nevertheless, she was fun, she was quick, she was steamy, she was spicy, she left me wanting more thus has made me willing to give an organ for a full length novel. I missed being with these girls <3

My Thoughts: Atlas and Penny's (Penelope's) story is a quick read with your typical Saffron style writing. This book has angst, mental illness rep, and spice. Saffron has a way of writing that draws a reader in with relatable situations. I resonated with Penny and her inner thoughts when it came to her anxiety disorder. I enjoyed this short book and highly recommend it.

His jaw tightens just like his body did as soon as I called him. “And what it would take for you to go away? A fungal cream, perhaps?”

This was a really nice quick read and honestly I wish I had listened to my gut and read this after Heartstone series and not St Mary’s because for some mistake I presume, this is in the St Mary’s series file. But oh well, it gave me a nice intro into the Heartstone’s series and I’m pretty interested in reading it.

Renn insistence — I knew I shouldn’t have — and when I modeled it for her, she took pics and texted him from my phone

Are we collectively going to just ignore how much of a problem this is. You can’t just do that, friend or not. This is just a perfect way for the receiver to blackmail. Like this scene just made me uncomfortable, not to mention how everyone else was just okay with it?

“I get an elevated heart rate too, Atlas.” His heart pounds even harder and I press my hand against his chest. “When I see you.”
“What?”
Smiling, I lean against his body. “I also get sweaty palms and my belly flutters.”
“Your belly flutters.”
“Yes. I think it’s all the dopamine in my brain.”
He sweeps his eyes all over my face. “Or it could be bad tacos.”

lol. I really like Atlas AH personality. I liked his anxiety was shown as well, and for a 90+ words book, it was very well layered.

I’ve been on top of reading Ms. Kent’s last few releases right away and I thought for sure that I would read Chemical Romance as soon as it came out too, but I actually didn’t? I realize it’s weird to put a question mark there because obviously I know I didn’t read it then, but I’m questioning my choice to put it off even though I know why I did. I was truly planning on starting it, but I ultimately decided to hold off so that way I still had a new Saffron A. Kent book to pick up for whenever which is a good reason, I’m still just somewhat surprised at myself though. Anyway, with all that rambling out of the way, I’m glad that I waited while also at the same time kicking myself a little for doing so because I absolutely loooved Chemical Romance! Penny and Atlas were just wonderful and I loved their dynamic! This might have been a novella, but it was still packed with heart, emotion, depth, warmth, and love — a total Saffron A. Kent classic and I simply adored this book. It left me with such a smile on my face and I felt like I was going to burst with all the warm, gooey, love feelings I had — it was just so fantastic and I know it’s a different Kent Universe, but bring on Poe and Alaric next!

Short, sweet, but not enough for my greedy reader heart.

I’m always happy to read something by Saffron A. Kent, my all-time fave. So when I saw this novella it was an immediate grab with no questions asked.

It was a super quick read, like, blink and you’re done, and while I enjoyed it, I really wish it had been longer. That’s honestly why I gave it 3 stars. I didn’t get enough time to truly connect with the characters. I was actually more excited to see Violet pop in for a few scenes than to read about Penn. Oops.

I didn’t feel much about the characters, they were fine, but not enough to make me scream into my pillow or kick my feet like I usually do with Saffron’s books.

Also, and maybe this is just me being me (lol) but I was lowkey waiting for a super detailed first time scene and it never came. I won’t lie, I was a tiny bit disappointed.

That being said, I’m still glad I read it because I’ve made it my mission to read every single book by Saffron A. Kent. One step closer to my goal!!

But yeah, not a story that’ll stay with me forever. A cute detour, not a destination.

A gem of a story. Shorter, quicker read than others by Saffron Kent.

All the quirkiness we've come to expect from this author, the specifics of Penelope's story go where we don't really expect a romance to go. Penelope isn't like the rest of her family, and she's not understood. But it isn't until she has a literal breakdown that she gets the validation and support she's always needed, at Heartstone. This is when her connections to others finally begin. And also where Atlas comes more fully into the picture. The TA with strong arms, perfect green eyes, few words... and most of them of the a**hole variety.

A college romance centering on mental health and psychological conditions many live with. We bear witness to awkward, abrupt, and brutally honest emotions and conversations. And vulnerability wins in the end. I was cheering for Penelope, and quite taken by Atlas. And I'm ready to read Willow and Violet's stories...

I received a free copy that took me a long while to finally get around to reading, and I'm glad I finally did.

This was cute little story about Penelope, a college student who is pre-med and trying to pass her biochemistry class. However, when a failing grade has her anxiety ridden brain short circuiting, Altas is there to catch her as she falls. He keeps her safe, and fall she does…falls deeply in love with her biochem TA, Atlas.
As time progresses and Penny needs a tutor, she runs to Atlas to ask for help. Only, Atlas has other plans. After a rather uncomfortable dinner deal and awkward conversation, Penny finds herself in Atlas’s strings arms. This is definitely a place she doesn’t want to ever leave. So much yumminess in this book! I loved this couple, Atlas was fierce and set Penny straight when she seemed to lose control.

I really wish this had been a whole novel because it felt so rushed. There’s a random chapter from the point of view of the MMC, Atlas, but the rest is from the FMC’s perspective. The decision didn’t make much sense to me. The writing is also really repetitive—he has green eyes, we get it—and there were some spelling and grammar issues that caught my attention. This had the potential to be a great forbidden romance between a TA/tutor and his student, but it missed the mark for me. I will say I did really like the anxiety disorder rep in it though.

Loved!!! It was a novella so I didn’t feel I could give it a full 5 stars since the characters are not developed much. Still so lovely 💕 I will say that this is shelved incorrectly on GR - it’s not in the St. Mary’s series it should be in the Heartstone series. ANYWHO still wonderful!

This novella is part of the Heartstone series and was so freaking good!

I'm not a novella kinda gal, because I love a longer book in general and novellas don't give enough time for me to connect to the characters, but this was just as good as her full length novels. Of course, I wish it could be made into one and I would totally read it! Penny and Atlas deserve all the time in the world imo, because I loveeee them both! BUT their little novella still made my heart happy and managed to bring the tension and a bit of spice toward the end, too! Loved it!

4.25 STARS!!!

Short, cute and fun story that tells the story of Penelope and Atlas from the Heartstone series. I honestly wished this was longer and the characters and story were fleshed out more, but it was perfect for what it was. I'll be honest, I'm a little biased when it comes to anything SAK writes, so that could have played a factor in my rating and enjoyment level (sorry, not sorry), and I'm anticipating great things to come from her in the coming year.

Short, sweet, spicy, sexy.

I actually had a distractingly hot chemistry TA in college with muscles that constantly threatened to rip through his too-tight shirts so this was just reading the fantasy I had every day of that semester. Immensely satisfying.

It was a cute, fun read. I didn’t realize it was a novella to a series pertaining to some other characters mentioned in the book so I may look into those now.

Loved this little novella but would have loved a full length version even more!
I feel like these characters had so much more to give and I could have easily fallen in love with the broody, protective, smart and sexy Atlas because I was halfway there with these few precious chapters. That being said I still enjoyed this book, if anything wanting more is a testament to just how much!

A short story starring Atlas and Penelope. Penelope has an anxiety attack in class due to a grade, and Atlas takes care of her. Later, she needs help with a class and asks Atlas to tutor her, and he accepts in exchange for dinner. Things get even better from there. I wish it had been a bit longer, but it was fine.

It was really short I think if they would have expanded the story and went more in depth in places it would have been amazing. I kinda liked how they meet even tho it seems a little much but I feel like things like that could happen.
