This is my third book by the Indian author, Debarati Mukhopadhay, who writes in the Bengali language. Like the previous two, I enjoyed this one as well. But, unlike the aforementioned two novels which dealt with serious issues like historical injustice and societal taboos, this book is a collection of nine thriller novellas meant for mature readers.

The underlying theme running across the stories is the darkness etched in the human psyche. As the blurb mentions the stories are not based on professional criminals, but try to seek the filth hidden in the minds of so-called normal people.

The stories revolve around themes like jealousy, greed, lust, fear, superstitions and mental disorders which result in conspiracy, betrayal, unnatural acts and murder. The events take place in diverse places like tribal villages, police morgue, common household, erstwhile nobleman's mansion and one particular story is set in rural Netherland. One relevant question the author has asked is that who is civilized and who is uncivilized? Think about it. Who is more dangerous -the tribal whose customs look terrifying or immoral to the so-called civilized man, but who minds his business and might be fair in his dealings? Or is it the modern man who pretends to be civilized, but can stoop to any level for vested interests?

Not a profound read, but a good thriller for fans of the genre.
