What Phoebe and I have is worth dedicating decades for.

Adventure brings them together; love brings them back alive. A broken heart or two along the way. What two people do, is to make sure they survive.

The feels.
I wasn't prepared for this book. It's not often that a story brings me to tears, but this one really got to me. The writing was so beautifully poetic at times and the plot was absolutely heart-wrenching. I think a lot of people will be able to relate to this novel, especially those who have experienced heartbreak or struggled with their own inner demons.

Highly recommend!

This story is so beautiful and good and nothing like I was expecting at all. And that cover, I love it, it’s so them.

The writing is good and the settings are so cool, like I for one haven’t read too sufficient books where they discuss national parks but it is well balanced and nothing over the top.

The romance story is young, beautiful, angsty and everything in between. Family connection and the pressure of holding those standards they keep and also knowing that you might lose the best thing that you could have, your love life. I found it selfish of him in the beginning, but with time, I understood why he left.

Beautiful story, steamy scenes and an unmissable book for any romantic reader.

The writing was beautiful and the story full of angst. I did really like the h. I’m not sold on the H. He loved the h but I never felt like he loved her enough or the same way the h loved him. He constantly put himself first and her last-constantly. When he did think he could change, it was apparent that he wasn’t ready yet but kept wanting her to be ready for when he was.

It was a tough roller coaster ride to go on with these characters and I felt the h’s friend rooting for the H was out of line. He had so many chances gifted to him-despite not deserving them.

They get their HEA due to being soul mates but I think the h deserved better.

National Parks follows Phoebe and Enzo in this beautiful love story. Phoebe is a photographer and Enzo is trying to figure out what he wants to do with his life. They travel the world falling in love over different landscapes. We see these characters from Florida to Montana to Brazil, Japan, Scotland, and many more places. But not everything is perfect and when one feels the need for a change, heartbreake unfolds.

I’ve read countless of Laikyn Meng’s books and this one is my newest favorite. Phoebe and Enzo are two characters you can't help but root for. You get to watch and see them grow and develop throughout these pages. Jumping right in and we see right away how much Enzo loves Phoebe, it's refreshing seeing a male character madly in love, right from the first handful of pages. There are so many cute moments and every scene with them feels like it matters and that it helps move the story along. I don't wanna overshare about these two because I don't wanna spoil anything, but these two learn not only about love but self-love too.

Rachelle aka Elle is a character who shines all on her own. You get to see her and Phoebe’s relationship start and develop, showing that friendships are important and matter in life. There is a scene at Joshua Tree National Parks with Phoebe and Elle. Was one of my favorite part and I can't put my finger on why but it's a great scene of friendship.

Laikyn’s writing style is poetic, paints a photo of wonderful places around the world, and take these characters on a journey. I enjoyed how everything is hooked together, everything matters, the flow. As I said, I have read many books by Laikyn and her writing style has evolved with this book, and I can't wait to see what more is written by her in the future.

This page-turner is easy to get lost in with characters you want a happily ever after for. It's a journey of self-discovery, second chances, family issues and much more. If you like hard-hitting stories, strong female characters, and an emotional undertaking that will keep you wondering what will happen to Phoebe and Enzo next, then pick up this now.

**I received this as an ARC**

Before I get into my review, let me say this, please make sure to check trigger warnings on this book. There is mention of suicide, as well as PTSD from an attack.

Ok, so this review is going to be short and sweet. Simply because this is a story best read with no hints given. This book, man I can't even think of the right words to describe how I feel. It is an amazing story that will grab you, and not let go. Getting to see Enzo and Phoebe go through everything they have to in order to love themselves so that they can finally be together was amazing. This book had me silently crying in bed at 3 am, trying not to wake my husband with my sobbing. Once again, please make sure you check the TWs before starting this story. It is very heavy, and will break your heart.

I might have cried a little

Great read, would definitely recommend. Full of angsty, soul matey love. Main character and love interest travel a long bumpy road, full of trauma, and PTSD, lots of trigger moments. I think I cried from the middle to the end of the book. Haven’t cried this much in a book since reading The Notebook. Multicultural family drama also a strong theme in the book. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

First off, this title gives me “Don’t save her/she don’t wanna be saved” + "In my mind/I'll always be his lady" + "I'm on an emotional roller/Loving you ain't nothing healthy" vibes. #IYKYK
From cover to cover, the author lays the drama on thick & had my emotions all over the place. Next, the location changes so much in this book, I had trouble keeping up. Alternating perspectives normally irritate my soul, but this author did something right & might've liked it more than I willing to admit. Furthermore, to be honest, this is the most realistic romance I’ve ever read. Because love can sometimes be a bit of a noose & heartbreak is no joke. Phoebe & Enzo are stuck on this emotional rollercoaster & they can’t get off. Just when the reader thinks it can’t get any worse it does. Finally, at the end though, the plot manages to reel itself in after giving me numerous heart palpitations. The multi-cultural element of this book came up a bit short for me because the author only gave small glimpses into the actual Asian cultures represented by the characters. Most of the glimpses highlight the bigotry Asian Americans can face even within their own family, which I appreciated the perspective of such experiences. Switching gears though, I was a bit disappointed in how Phoebe’s assistant’s character wasn’t more flushed out. I would’ve loved to see more done with Elle. Maybe in a sequel or something? Overall, the author understood the assignment in including the struggles of mental health, even if she did romanticize them a little more than I prefer. If you struggle with mental health please don’t suffer in silence & I definitely recommend it to others. Lastly, future readers please know that the sex scenes can get racy & weird quick! Don’t say I didn’t tell you.

This book DESTROYED me. It's raw and heartwrenching, poetic and sad, funny and loving, chaotic and messy, and it hurts so damn much.

Phoebe is a travel photographer, escaping her unhappy, abusive home where she struggled to breath. Instead, now she's able to travel, to see the world and find her place in it. Along the way, she meets Kenzo, and invites him to travel with her. Together, they have 4 years of a love she never thought she'd find.

Until Enzo tells her he needs to leave. That this life isn't enough for him anymore. He has his own reservations about leaving, so he decides the only way he can go is if he breaks her heart. Attacks all the insecurities she has, to make it really devastating.

Next comes years of them struggling to find a way to live without the other. Trying to learn how to go on without the other half of your soul, knowing that you found the one you were always meant to be with.

So many times they have a chance to give in. To fall back together and heal. Pride keeps them away. Anger at themselves, the need to find out who they are and love themselves.

I've always struggled with books where the characters love each other, but find ways that they can't be together. Instead, they keep hurting each other, making it harder until they're left with nothing more than simply trying to find a way to survive. I always want to shout "communicate"! For once, I finally got the slightest glimmer of how it might really be. A strange sort of sense to the madness.

While the writing was beautiful in ways, at times I struggled. To keep up with the mess, to understand where in the timeline I was. To separate past from present, reality to dream.

Serious trigger warnings, with a public shooting and attack, as well as attempted suicide. These are not shied away from. They are not handled delicately. They are violent and visceral and raw. They are heartbreaking.

There were parts of this I loved. That sat with me, as I tried to forever etch the beauty of the words, the raw feeling into every part of me. I cried (which doesn't happen often), tears soaking my pillow even after the final words had been read. Truthfully, I don't know if I"m recommending this, or simply trying to figure out how to survive it. I thought books like Love and Other Words (by Christina Lauren) or Some Mistakes Were Made (by Kristin Dwyer) had prepared me for this. Nothing could have prepared me for this.

If you enjoy books that force you to feel, that grab you and won't let go, that completely obliterate you, this is the one. Please mind the warnings in the description. You may find much of yourself in these pages, and if you are struggling, if you don't think you are enough, please call someone. Please don't drown alone. You deserve that much.

“How do you tell someone over the phone you might want to die and feel better if you don’t survive the night?”

Twenty pages into National Parks, I had really high hopes for this book, and for Phoebe's character. The opening scene of this book worked so well for me – it thrusts you right into this moment at a dip in Phoebe’s mental state – I was entranced.

Unfortunately, this interest didn’t extend to the core relationship of the book. The shallow, sexual manner in which Phoebe and Enzo interact in the beginning was a little jarring to me. I knew what I was signing up for, but their exchanges felt more like a cheap porno playing out rather than the supposed meaningful relationship I’d been excited to explore. (Stilted, juvenile dialogue — “boobies”, exorbitant amounts of “babe,” constant references to genitals — heavy-handedness on sex rather than emotional connection). That, coupled with melodrama on both sides and social commentary that landed a few yards off for me, was what ultimately affected my enjoyment of this book. I was super intrigued by the premise of second-chance love and the opening — but the rest of this novel, well, that’s a whole different story.

Definitely heed the content warnings. Serious topics like mental health, domestic violence, etc. are discussed in this book.

This book was everything ever wanted and more. The story was filled with love, loss and finding who you are and it shows how beautiful the world can be. The love between Enzo and Phoebe is amazing. They are soulmates and I never questioned their connection for one second, not even when things became impossible. I laughed and cried, but this story was one of the most amazing things that I have ever read. The representation is like nothing I have ever read, and I have a newfound appreciation and understanding of these fantastic cultures through Meng's writing.

This is a friends-to-lovers, second chance romance that delivers. I only wish that there was an extended epilogue so I could keep reading. I did get a little confused on the time span at times but after reading a little, it became a bit clearer. I think that it might have been a little easier with a date of some sort, maybe even just the year. That way you can follow the timeline a little better. Other than that I have no faults in the book. I would 100% recommend.

I’m actually rating this 4.5 stars!

Woah, that was quite an opening chapter! I was drawn into the story and it didn’t release me until the end. Phoebe and Enzo have one of the cutest relationships I’ve read on paper. Seeing them go adventures together while Phoebe captures beautiful photos was great! She’s already a bit jaded by life and Enzo is the man with the golden retriever energy in the best way. Not just him though, it was definitely reciprocated. But familial pressures come into play and their bubble of happiness bursts😭 There was an occasion after their breakup where Phoebe showed up to Enzo’s graduation from the Naval Academy but she walked away after they made eye contact. I legitimately screamed! Missed opportunities kill me!! (In books only, real life… sometimes missed opportunities are a good thing) I won’t elaborate too much more because I highly encourage you to give this book a chance. One last thought: I seriously hope my next read doesn’t have shitty parents in it😫 A huge thanks to the author for this complimentary ARC, I leave my review freely and without influence.

*In full disclosure, I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*

'National Parks' is the first book I've read by Laikyn Meng and she does a wonderful job in making you fall in love with the characters.
Culture and race are heavily mentioned in this book, almost as if it were that silent mistress in the background wanting to force a couple apart permanently.
Phoebe and Kenzo are relatable when it comes to the pressures of being a good child, following in their parents' footsteps, and in Phoebe's story, a child made to believe they are the reason for unhappiness, that their existence is problematic.
Phoebe and Kenzo shine together, but are also destructive together without facing their issues head on. Once they do, they are unstoppable and happier together.
If I had to mention a constructive comment, it is that it was a bit hard to follow along with reading the story, with the timeline from beginning to end. I didn't know how much time had actually passed, as the format was different than I'm used to. This is the reason I gave 4 stars.

Have you ever loved somebody so much that it doesn't just change you know it imprints on you every fiber of your being every molecule every atom is rewritten in their image. You no longer have a soul because it belongs to them
Then one day they just up and walk away.
And you let them because you love them but every day they walk further and further taking all you are with them.. All of you with but physical parts, the parts that go through each day somehow still existing in their absence. And every time they come back they chip away at what's left of that physical part until it hurts too much to exist. Their presence hurts as much as their absence. They are the drug and the Antidote. The beginning and the end. The salvation and your reason for needing it

I think that kind of love would be epic if it didn't kill you. This is the story of how that love killed me

I received this as an ARC and I am really thankful!

God, this book is brimming with tears and hopes. The genuine ache I experienced when they walked separate ways, I really need to sit back and cry for a moment, having a momentarily time to long for someone that I wasn't so sure I know (but I missed, anyway).

The pain lingered longer and boy, do I enjoy the bitter feeling. This one is so beautiful that I feel the need to kiss the book one day!

The missing one star is for how Kenzo was a tad bit rude in my opinion and his strong character was too much for me, but all in all, it's really a story that is very VERY enjoyable! ♥

Well written new adult, contemporary love story that had me drawn by the beautiful cover. As I turned each page I loved the story of Enzo and Phoebe....but their story is definitely not easy..and many times a gut punch. How you can be in love so hard with every bit of might you have and turn and walk away that leads to guilt, sadness, tears and never feeling whole.

Phoebe is a photographer whom travels the world......she meets Enzo by chance encounter as they were strangers. Enzo ends up following Phoebe to all her beautiful destinations so she can capture the beauty in her pictures...but family pressure leads Enzo down the road to a different path. That path seals the fate for many years for both Enzo and Phoebe. Will their love survive the true hardship that comes their way?

This story is beautiful and moments are hard, but the story is so raw and real. The author really captures the true essence of a love that was broken and trying to find the way back. The use of famous National Parks and the descriptive beauty is very captivating. This is a great read.

Beware: Makes sure to read the trigger warning before starting this book.

National Parks is a new adult second chance contemporary romance story. It is a story that is told across time and many beautiful and wonderous landscapes around the world. It is a story of heartbreak and longing, loneliness and want, heartache and hope. It is a story of survival no matter what the heart wants and where you end up.

A one-night stand, a stranger in a parking lot. Is that all they will ever be?

Phoebe was left heartbroken and is unable to forgive him for breaking it. All she needs is her camera and the world around her.

He is wandering around looking for his place in the world. There is one thing he does know and that is he doesn’t know how to fix things with the love of his life, but he knows they are meant to be together.

National Parks is an enjoyable read written by Laikyn Meng. The characters likeable.

Thank you to the BookSirens for providing me with an advance review copy for free, I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I think it's a solid novel; the writing is very lyrical and poetic, the plot is interesting enough, and the characters are engaging. However, I'm not sure what it is that I'm following - is it a second-chance romance or is it a book about two people working through their traumas and becoming better people? The novel works better as the latter in my opinion. I'm not sure if it works as a second-chance romance - the second-chance wasn't all that convincing for me.

I liked following the backstories of both Phoebe and Kenzo/Enzo - I think their characters were developed well and their interactions were realistic and believable. I just think the author could work on their chemistry a little better - they are a believable couple, but they don't seem to have a solid connection; it just felt like they bonded over trauma and that is what's keeping them in the relationship and keeps them coming back to each other.

The beginning part was very constructed and well thought out, however when it comes to the last chapters of the story, it just wasn't impactful. In my opinion, the ending felt rushed, it felt like the narration was stiff and numb, and the writing was too lyrical during the climax of the story - it just threw me off centre and made me question what I was reading. The characters become strange at the end as well, and because it's told from their point of views, it makes it harder to connect with them and understand their inner struggles when all they do is talk in poetic, flowery language and never directly acknowledge their emotions.

Overall, it's fine for me. When it comes to emotional, traumatic scenes, I think the author's lyrical, flowery writing really throws the emotional core out the window so it feels sugar-coated in a way. I just think the ending needs a little more work or even a little more in general.

This book has left me speechless because how insanely good the writing and the angst is! Each It's beautifully written each sentences it. Both the characters are so complex (in a good way), reading their own POVs is like reading through their diary, revealing their thoughts, dreams, desire, and how a relationship/person could had a strong effect on you--it feels like their lives revolved round each other. I don't know how it is possible to depicting so many emotions caused by a heartbreak of separation. I love each time they're together from their not-so-meet-cute to every trips together, showing how wild, young, reckless, and carefree people can be. And yet their separation and how it affected them, how they tried to overcome their sorrows, longing, and even hope--it's so beautiful and painful to read at the same time. I love how they both tried to be the best to each other, even though they're technically not together, it shows how strong their connection and feelings to each other. And how they both finally matured and able to overcome their issues. I love the random facts about their destinations too, it made me feels like I was on that trip and witnessing one of the greatest love story happened in front of me.

Overall, this book is a story of chasing your dreams, finding who you really are, and love with an unbreakable bond is exists. Mind you, I literally cried on the 5th last chapters. This book conveyed rich emotions and messages. I want to appreciate Laikyn Meng for evoking such feelings on me.

TW: abusive grandparent, mention of suicide attempts, terror attacks, trauma.

I find it impossible to describe this book without using the words ‘heartbreaking’ & ‘beautiful’ because that is exactly what this is. I’ve never read a love story quite like this one & it’ll forever stand out among all the books I’ve read - it’s so raw & real & viceral. As the reader, we follow ten years of the relationship between Phoebe & Enzo, who are drawn to each other & pulled apart throughout that time, often at their own doing as they try to navigate who they are outside of this relationship. And the setting bounces us around the world, travelling alongside them, sometimes alone & sometimes together.

While I struggled a bit initially, grabbing for something to hook me into the story, around 20% in I was so invested & I binged the rest of the book in about a day. The writing style was at first a challenge - I’m not sure how to describe it but it was difficult to pick up the rhythm in a way that didn’t bounce me out of the story (if that even makes sense?). But I quickly realized that Meng is an artist with the way she uses words, describing things in a way that constantly had me thinking, “fuck, I wish I could write something that beautiful.”

Not only was I invested in the relationship between Phoebe & Kenzo, but I also found myself invested in them as individuals & in the side characters - like Enzo’s mom, Kumiko, & Phoebe’s assistant, Elle. These are just some of the characters we meet over the ten years, adding layers of detail & complication & growth & love. This is the perfect book to read for those who like heavy, emotional romance stories that are real & complicated.

I look at him until he starts coming back to life, until we are on the same page again, not running in separate directions to save ourselves.” UGH, MY HEART.

Thank you to NetGalley & BooksGoSocial for providing a digital copy of this book for review. The heartbreak & all opinions/thoughts are my own.

This book was so emotionally moving. Phoebe and Enzo's relationship is so powerful and throughout the entire book it leaves you rooting for them to feel worthy of each other's love. Through this book Laikyn Meng was able to address very important mental health topics in such a tasteful way. You truly feel the emotions the characters are going through in the story through her writing. On the surface, this looks like a story about two peoples travels, but in reality it is so much deeper and really draws you in.

"They say when you are uncomfortable, that is when you make the most difference", is a true testament to Phoebe's desire to tell a story through her travels. She has an eye for what others are not able to see and is constantly trying to push her comfort zone. The cultural representation and Phoebe's ability to adapt to any culture she travels to is admirable. "Fear is limiting, hasn't gotten me anywhere being scared of the unknown".

Kenzo also completely describes their love story within the book when he says "being in love with the right person changes you." Love is such a complex concept and their story is definitely representative of that. There are so many ups and downs throughout their story that keeps you on the edge of your seat to see what is going to happen between them.

"Always remember the good echos. You can get through anything" -never forget that friends!

National Parks left me with mixed feelings, earning a solid 2 out of 5 stars. The story follows talented photographer Phoebe and her boyfriend Enzo on a journey of love and self-discovery across various international landscapes. While the characters are engaging, and the author's poetic writing style beautifully paints the scenes, the narrative's heavy emphasis on sexual content felt overpowering and at times overshadowed the depth of the characters' connection. Additionally, the plot's trajectory, especially towards the end, left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.
Despite these shortcomings, Meng's exploration of themes like second chances, family issues, and the importance of friendships makes it a worthwhile read for those seeking a nuanced emotional journey. It felt like there was truly a good story underneath the choppy dialogue and unnecessarily crude scenes, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to shine through. *Definitely* should have come with a trigger warning at the beginning of the book for the following: suicide, suicidal ideation, domestic violence, abuse, and PTSD.

Wow, this would NOT have been a book I’d have chosen had I known all the feelings I would experience while reading it. Phoebe & Kenzo go through so much together and separately, and while there’s an HEA*, it’s not for ages. Quite literally. These two beautiful biracial people fit in everywhere and nowhere as they struggle with identity, meeting as 19 and 20 year olds, and the torment - self-inflicted and otherwise - they experience lasts for a decade while they mature (?) in the ways which will allow them to try to be together after so much grief and heartache. Phoebe in particular has a devastating journey of vivid bleakness and depression contrasted with the breathtaking vistas she’s memorializing on digital canvases. Kenzo meanwhile is plagued by patriarchal expectations, but finds himself unmoored without Phoebe’s presence and fearlessness, coupled with her deep optimism and self-possession which he destroys with his absence, then with his carelessness as he makes poor attempts over the years to reconnect with his soul’s other half.
An absolute tragedy is barely averted before he finally becomes the partner Phoebe needs.
This was beautifully, poetically written, but vulgar where needs must as the pair were growing into their respective adulthoods. Ms Meng has a wonderful gift for prose and imagery. I’m so glad I read this book. and I know it will stay with me for a long time to come.

Thank you Net Galley & for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This book was a deep read for me. Realistic, and truly felt everything. As I am someone who struggles with my own demons and mental health every day, this book really pulled me in. Tears certainly fell.

The book was moving. The love between Phoebe and Kenzo was true and real. I felt a lot for Phoebe and how she was brought up. But with Kenzo by her side, it made life happier none the less. I related to Kenzo as well. Both had issues, and battles, in different forms. Being together, not only made things easier, but stronger together. To me the writing was beautiful, enjoyed the writing and the setting as well. I was deeply pulled in and mesmerized all the way through. It was very much at times, but it made it the joy it was. The emotions and the love you feel, go hand hand in hand, and make you see the beauty of the story.

This is a book I will continue to highly recommend to others. Even if you did not have a difficult upbringing, you can reward yourself, by understanding by those that didn't. Defiantly a must read book and author!

The first thing I want to point out is that there is a trigger warning on this book and that it is very valid. However, this is definitely a must read book. Every once in a while I read a book that stays with me long past the end of the book. The kind of book that lingers in your soul, leaves you thinking about the characters well after it ends. The kind of book that makes you look at humanity just a little bit differently. This is one of those books. Phoebe and Enzo are wonderfully broken characters who felt so human, so real. I wanted to reach out and touch them. I felt this story so deeply I cried at several points throughout. I definitely encourage everyone to read it!

This story sticks with you long after finishing it and tugs at every emotion you have. I was blown away by this book which was pleasantly surprising because I hadn’t heard of the author before. I am beyond happy I decided to pick this up and give them a chance. You will get to know Phoebe and Enzo throughout this second-chance romance. It’s not a walk in the park by any means, so please heed the trigger warning that the author kindly put up. Even through the heartbreak I was rooting for them, the author did a phenomenal job creating this world. I am watching this author intently now as I want to read anything they put out. You won’t be disappointed, please give this book a chance to engage you in an emotional rollercoaster!

National Parks is a beautifully written story about a couple that has a second chance at love. Phoebe and Enzo are a couple that loves each other deeply but is not ready for the love that they truly desire. The story takes you all over from Montana to Japan. You get to see this couple fall in love in these beautiful places. There is a lot of angst. There are also the themes of self-love and friendship, which I absolutely love. It is hard to read about this couple that loves each other so much going through so much heartache. I was delighted to see Phoebe and Enzo get their happy ending! There are strong themes in this book dealing with suicide, but if you enjoy angst and happily ever afters, you need to read this book.

National Parks: An Angsty Second Chance Multicultural Romance
by Laikyn Meng

4 out of 5 Stars

This book takes you on an angsty, full of trauma bumpy road. The story of Enzo and Phoebe is one to keep you thinking and will bring all the feelings. Even though the title says it was going to be angsty I didn't expect it to be so heartfelt. If you want to travel around beautiful landscapes and have all your feelings hit you at once you should definitely give this book a try.
