One Fell Sweep [Dramatized Adaptation]

Rate this book
Dina Demille may run the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, but she caters to a very particular kind of guest… the kind that no one on Earth is supposed to know about. Guests like a former intergalactic tyrant with an impressive bounty on her head, the Lord Marshal of a powerful vampire clan, and a displaced-and-superhot werewolf; so don’t stand too close, or you may be collateral damage.

But what passes for Dina’s normal life is about to be thrown into chaos. First, she must rescue her long-distant older sister, Maud, who’s been exiled with her family to a planet that functions as the most lawless penal colony since Botany Bay. Then she agrees to help a guest whose last chance at saving his civilization could bring death and disaster to all Dina holds dear. Now Gertrude Hunt is under siege by a clan of assassins. To keep her guests safe and to find her missing parents, Dina will risk everything, even if she has to pay the ultimate price. Though Sean may have something to say about that!

I’m continuing my re-read for the 2025 read-along of the Innkeeper Chronicles via the Dramatized Adaptations by GraphicAudio.
=====
This series is a MUST READ and one that must be read in order. Everything builds from book to book and it only gets better.

I waited to read this when the paperback version came out. I like the pictures illustrated in the paperbacks and of course I prefer to read a story in it's entirety instead of bit by bit. The author published parts on their website, but for me it's not the same as getting it all in one sitting, holding that paperback.

WOW. I read this in one day. Couldn't put it down. I loved everything about this installment. Going deeper into Dina’s family, seeing her relationship grow with Sean, revisiting characters and introducing new ones. Just Fabulous!! I can't wait for the next installment.

- The relationship between Dina and Sean. Their relationship has been a slow build. I like how this relationship has developed over the books. It was fabulous seeing Dina come to understand her feelings for Sean, her wolf, and how it all came into focus. I liked the conversations they had and that they hashed out things. To finally see these two get together and move their relationship into the physical one, was sweet and well worth the wait.

- We are introduced to Diana's sister, Maud and her niece, Helen. I love seeing kids. They add something special to the books and here there's magic afoot. It’s hard not to fall for Helen and of course her mother Maud is one badass women. What she’s been through and how she survived. Power to her. I’m curious and LOVE that a romantic relationship might be developing between Maud and Arland.

- Arland, I never saw him for Dina and didn’t like the little triangle thing in book one, but here Arland was fabulous. He melted my heart with how sweet he was to Helen and his run ins with Maud where great. I really want to see more Maud, Helen, and Arland. Maybe they will get their own book. Who knows?

- The concept and storyline for the Hiru was wonderful done. And, Officer Marais, things finally comes to a head. There were many more events and things that made this such an outstanding read.

 - There were emotional parts that made my heart melt and clench. Their were hilarious scenes like the fart gun, which I laughed so hard reading. Then we get so many hints and tidbits that were amazing morsel to digest. Like the tidbit on Klaus (Dina’s Brother), her father and mother, and of another big bad that might be on the horizon that Dina maybe confronting.

There was just so much to love in One Fell Sweep. I don’t know how the Andrews team keeps coming up with new, unique, and astonishing things, but they do. I’m in awe. Really if you haven't started the Innkeeper Chronicles or any works by Ilona Andrews you are sorely missing out.

One Fell Sweep is a phenomenal Urban Fantasy adventure.

Audio Sept. 2018: I LOVE the audio book for One Fell Sweep.

Graphic Audio Aug. 2022: OUTSTANDING... I love the graphic audio's. I can't believe I've not discovered these types of audiobooks before. BIG Fan of Andrews and the Innkeeper Chronicles, but WOW the Graphic Audiobook brings out a whole new level in the story. All the sound effects, cinematic music, and full cast just brings the story to life. It truly is a movie in the mind.

When my library delivered this audiobook to my account, I admit I dropped everything to listen to it this weekend. I've read my paper copy so many times that I even noticed the adaptations that made it work better in audio. I think this may be my favourite volume of the Innkeeper series. I think I enjoy Dina and Sean sorting themselves out while Maud and Arland reach détente. Plus there is virtually nonstop action, what with rescuing Maude and Helen, the appearance of the Hiru, the corrupted innkeeper, collecting the parts of the Archivarius, and the siege by the Draziri. Plus the irony of Sean stating that he will kill every single Draziri and then they will celebrate Christmas. 🤣

Since reading (a number of times) Sweep of the Heart, I appreciate the planning that the Andrews put into planning these series. Details of this book stand out when you realize where they are heading. The somewhat familiar feeling of the corrupted innkeeper's magic, for example, or the wanderings of Olasard through Gertrude Hunt.

I love these graphic audio recordings and find them very effective. I don't remember quite so much background music in previous installments, but perhaps my memory is selective. At times I felt the music and sound effects overwhelmed the dialogue, an unfortunate situation. But it was still far too much fun and I know that I will once again neglect other books in favour of Maude and Arland's story when it comes available at the library. Not a bad distraction from the wait for what threatens to be the final volume of the Innkeeper Chronicles. Yes, I want to read the next book. No, I don't want the series to end.

One of these days I'm going to stop settling back in amazed surprise when I read/listen to these authors' books. Seriously! I already thought this was a fantastic series and I was all in, but this latest installment in the Innkeeper Chronicles series just raised the bar even higher.

Dina, her latest group of guests, and Gertrude Hunt Inn are in the fight for their very lives. This was nearly non-stop dangerous excitement and, when it wasn't, it was intense character and relationship development action that left me blinking back tears. Oh, and the cherry on top? We get the alien's take on the human tradition of Christmas- laughed so hard the tears came.

I loved that part of Dina's family finally makes an appearance, more of the favorite side characters, and, Hallelujah, more on Dina's romance with Sean. Dina is really brought to the brink in this one and she continues to grow through each trial put before her.

There are some surprises and heart=stopping twists to this one. It will resonate with readers and real world issues even though, as usual, there are aliens to encounter both good, shades of gray, and deeply flawed.

Oh, and that little bell-ringer sentence at the very end made me groan and prepare myself for a long (im)patient wait to see what that thread will produce. That said, there was such great progress made for other threads (ahem smoldering hot Sean and Dina scenes) and closure for the main conflict that I don't mind.

I'm so into the Graphic Audio version by now that I eagerly plunged in to see what music, sound effect, and the depth the audio voice actors could reach with this story that could have been made especially for this format- I guess that means this was excellent.

This fantastic blend of Urban Fantasy and Sci-Fi is a treat not to be missed. Do yourself a favor and snag these for your own reading/listening pleasure.

I’m continuing my re-read of the Innkeeper Chronicles via the dramatized adaptations by GraphicAudio with One Fell Sweep, the third title. I originally read and reviewed the ebook back in 2016, and my review can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This review will focus solely on the graphic audiobook aspect of the book.

Overall, I enjoyed the full cast production of One Fell Sweep. Having listened to the graphic audiobook of the first two books in the series, the performances of both the primary narrator and returning supporting cast are familiar and pleasant. This is probably my favorite book in the series, and knowing what I was getting into beforehand enhanced the listening experience.

The production features Nora Achrati as the solitary narrator, Dina Demille. The story is shared via her first person POV, so the majority of the audiobook is performed by Ms. Achrati, who has a solid southern accent and adds a lot of emotion into her performance. After listening to the first two books, she has become Dina for me, and I don’t know if I’d like anyone else playing her part. She’s captured Dina’s sensitivity, hope, and frustration perfectly.

Each character’s dialogue is performed by a different cast member - just like a play or TV production. This time around, Megan Dominy is added to the cast as Maud, Dina’s long-absent sister. Ms. Dominy also uses a delightful southern accent, but it’s less noticeable due to her off-world existence. Dominy and Achrati work well together, playing off one another and teasing in a way close sisters do. Another new addition is Samantha Turret who portrays Dina’s young niece, Helen. At first, I didn’t care for the performance. It sounded like an adult trying too hard to be a young child. However, the more I listened to Helen, the more I loved the voice. It’s young and questioning, with that slight British-sounding accent most vampires have. Overall, the cast is well-suited to their characters, and the performances are full of energy and emotion.

Once again, I’m torn on the impact of the music and sound effects. Some of the music adds value, like ratcheting up the intensity of a high-stress situation. But once in a while, the music selected doesn’t fit what I envision for the scene. As for the sound effects, I mostly enjoy them. Some, like inanimate objects moving (door creaking), dogs barking, and the magic chimes of the Inn are successful and add to the performance quite a lot. They are well-timed and don’t overpower the narration. However, the human-based noises like grunting while fighting, don’t work as well for me. And this time around, I was absolutely mortified by the kissing and sex sounds used when Sean and Dina are intimate. It was just ewwww!

In the end, I really enjoyed the Dramatized Adaptation version of One Fell Sweep and look forward to listening to the rest of the books in the series.

My Audiobook Rating: B+ (performance only)

There is audio edition and there is Graphic Audio edition and I have to say, the second edition is a masterpiece of experiences. I loved everything about the third book, it was full of comic, drama and emotions. Overall, an amazing storyline and well written masterpiece. Dina experienced so much in this book, it was amazing. LOVED IT.
2017/March/19 - 4-star rating
I got an opportunity to listen to One Fell Sweep in audiobook edition, and of course I took it greedily. The main storyline was as previous, fast-paced and truly enjoyable. Personally, everything happened too fast and at the end it felt like it could go on, but still something was missing for me. In the next book, I hope we will get a slow developing storyline and not just a rushing days of action.
2016/December/20 - 4-star rating
There isn't much to tell about One Fell Sweep, the main storyline continued smoothly on. Dina had a full plate of issues. She needed to save her older sister, help hunted Aliens from crazy killers, and finally express her feelings to Sean. And for a bonus, she had got a clue about her own parents. The pace of the storyline was personally way too rushing, nonetheless, amazingly satisfying!
I'm looking forward to an audiobook edition!

Welcome to Gertrude Hunt Red Deer, Texas’s interstellar inn, open to intergalactic clientele. The innkeeper, Dina, makes the safety and comfort of her guests top priority, all while protecting them from the prying eyes of outsiders.

Years ago fans became familiar with the world of Andrews’s Innkeeper Chronicles through an online serial. I couldn’t resist giving the dramatized audio a listen. Ilona Andrews produces some of the best urban fantasy out there. I devour everything this duo creates.

There are some new additions to the cast this time around. Notably, Dina’s sister Maud and niece Helen bring unique backstories, sub-plots, and fill in some gaps. Both are trained in hand to hand combat and Maud has extensive knowledge of vampire politics. Helen is adorable and hilarious.

The writing took a deeper dive into the mythos this time which was interesting. As always the action sequences and characterization were brilliant. There’s layers of plot threads some of which are tied to the current inhabitants of the inn who are being targeted by assassins. There’s still the issue of Dina’s vanished parents which has been an ongoing mystery since book one.

Sean the sexy werewolf love interest continues to develop into a multifaceted character. He is becoming a more central character and the story seems better for it.

Each installment is better than the last. The dramatized audiobook’s casting and production is excellent. There are moments of unpredictable flair throughout this series making it exciting to see what’s next.

This chapter of the Innkeeper Chronicles may have been the most exciting yet. It made me laugh and shed a tear or two.
The only complaint I have is that Graphic Audio decided we needed background noises for the steamy scenes. This has been a slow-burn series up until now and I've been more than happy with that because the story is so incredible, but book 3 finally gives us our first sex scene that graphic audio plugged in kissing noises among others to help set the scene. I personally found these "noises" to be distracting and not at all appealing. Maybe it's just me but I hated them, it threw off the whole scene for me.
Other than that, I loved this chapter and look forward to listening to more of this series!

This gets really steamy for a book that has always felt quite cheesy and tame. It probably works for some, it wasn't for me. I also don't think this book was very strong beyond that. I don't by the primary romance, the plot has a lot going on, and the growing cast of characters are getting less and less screen time and are feeling more like cameo appearances, which is a shame because they were fun in the first two books.

Just adorable and super entertaining.
I enjoyed it very much and it never ceases to amaze me how easily I became fond of the characters and the whole story in general, which does not stop growing and expanding while little by little it evolves in its main premises.
Very good.

This book was an emotional roller coaster - rescuing Maud, Maud meeting Arland, Sean Evans 🥵, the hiru (I listened and have no idea if that’s spelled right), the drizzeri, just all the things.

I loved every second of the ride, and am now excited to dive into the Maud/Arland/Helen side quest before going back to our regularly scheduled programming…and finding out exactly what is up with that cat.

This is the 3rd book in the Innkeeper Chronicles and the best thus far! This had everything, a fantastic mission, a cute kid, lots of spectacular action, family reconciliations, a dash of heartbreak and even the momentary return of an adorable tertiary character from a previous book. It was absolutely phenomenal.

Audible (dramatized adaptation) - I have an addiction to Ilona Andrews similar to my addiction to Ruby Dixon. The world building and these novels are addicting. I want to know more and more and Ms. Anderson doesn’t disappoint. The storylines are unique and enthralling. The Innkeeper series has sucked me in!

I love this book and this series SO much. Here we are introduced to Helen who stole my heart immediately and lightened every mood. I read the ebook first online and then reviewed this at The Book Nympho and here in December 2017. I also own the regular audiobook which I have not yet read. So I own One Fell Sweep in all 3 formats.

I loved the characters all over again. They are really putting together their own found family with Dina and Sean, Maud and Helen, Arland and his uncle Soren, Orro and Caledonia, and Officer Marais. We even get to meet Sean's parents.

The Draziri were despicable. There was a lot of emotion here and some great humor.

Hooking from start to finish

Talk about plot twists! One part of the action is barely done than another one jumps at you, leaving you completely hooked until the very last hook of all.

At least, the burn ended up being slow between Dina and Sean, but everything else was also burning up, with a side of friendlies and not-so-friendlies.

Good? No. AY-MAY-ZING!

Maud, Helen, and Arland make this book for me! I love them. The dramatized version and whoever voices Helen makes Helen even MORE adorable. Oh my gosh! She's so cute.

Once again, really enjoyed the this book and the kind of glimpse we get of everyone. Nice to have Sean back too.

⭐4.5 (rounded down) - really liked it
First of all I still haven't bought a physical copy of this series! I wanted to buy the mass market paperbacks because I have The Edge series also in that format but I don't know if it is still possible to get them...

I liked this one a bit less than part two but this was also a very good story! Lots of heartbreaking moments but also lots of small moments that made the characters more endearing to me.

Downside, I have discovered I'm a Prude™. What is the tagline for GrapicAudio? Movie for your mind? Yeah I also get a bit uncomfortable with most sex scenes in movies. I thought with an audiobook it wouldn't translate. I can't remember feeling this with the other version of the audiobook. But in this one there were... sounds. Smooching and sucking sounds and I was like an old man that yells at clouds. Those damn kids should just get a room *grmbl*

⭐4 - really liked it
I finished this somewhat early in the morning. Surprisingly enough I fell asleep after that (not before starting the next book though). I had forgotten everything. Nothing was familiar so every event was fresh.

Here starts some very early morning musings that has nothing to do with the story:

That was what I was thinking about early in the morning. I was very tired. So the best moment to think about deep things.

Gave it 4 stars back then

NOTE TO MYSELF: BUY THIS!

This book put me through the wringer — I cried multiple times.

Everything I praised in the first two books applies here as well: witty writing, sharp humor, excellent pacing, and world-building that feels fresh with every chapter. But One Fell Sweep took the emotional stakes to another level. May the love Sean has for Dina find me in my next life. Their relationship continues to be a beautiful slow burn, full of tenderness and trust, and it gives the story so much heart without ever overshadowing the action. What I love most is the realness of it all. There’s no fake drama, no frustrating “Why can’t they just communicate?” moments. Every interaction feels lived-in and true to life. None of the cast feel like filler or props for the main character. They all have vivid, honest, expansive lives of their own.

I was afraid of where this book might take me, worried the ending would break me completely. Instead, it landed perfectly, and I found myself switching from sad tears to happy ones. The mix of grief, danger, loyalty, and humor made this my favorite in the series so far.

I also loved how the Andrews continues to expand the universe. New characters arrive fully formed, older favorites get even richer development, and the inn itself feels more alive with each book. The action is thrilling, the quiet moments hit just as hard, and Caldenia continues to steal every scene she’s in.

And once again, hats off to the narration. The full cast of Graphic Audio productions breathe life into these characters so completely that I can’t imagine experiencing the story any other way.

Absolutely L O V I N G this series. On to the next.

Apparently after I read the eBook, I didn't write the review right away and I'd completely forgotten everything. Looking at when I read the book, I knew why I was distracted back then.

The book starts with Dina rescuing her sister Maud and Maud's daughter Helen from Karhari, immediately followed by her attempts to save the Hiru. In the middle of that, there was also this dark thing attacking them.

The Hiru's story is very sad. I was hoping that there was more to Kiran Mrak, the Draziri who tried to killed the Hiru. I kind of felt bad for him at the end.

Arland's accent is to die for. I imagine all sort of things. Unfortunately, he seems to be the only one of the vampires with that accent, even though this is supposed to be the accent of his people.

This was my first experience of a dramatised audiobook and it sure is an interesting concept. It reminds me of a radio play in some ways, except I doubt the producers of such would have used quite so many sound effects. There's hardly a second without some kind of sound going on in the background. It's a "reading - for people who find books too boring" kind of solution. I found it a bit over the top - especially the romantic scenes which become mildly pornographic with the sex noises added in. I definitely wouldn't choose to read a series I truly cared about this way. For this series where I'm mildly interested but not all that invested, it was a good way to try out this new method of presentation. I think I'll continue with this series and see whether they grow on me more.
As far as the book itself is concerned - I'm not sure what it is about this series but I'm just not that into it. Weird because it has all the ingredients to be good - interesting worldbuilding, a character with cool powers, enough challenge to give it appropriate stakes. Perhaps it's because the MC is tied to her inn and therefore cannot journey into the world to find adventure. It all has to come to her. Maybe I just can't get on board with that kind of set-up? Whatever. Anyway, I'm reading them for the sake of completeness and this type of audiobook makes it a bit more interesting.

I love when a series keeps getting better! I finally "get" the term world building, because this is the first example I have come across of it being done with great aplomb. Bravo to the authors for moving the story forward at a great clip, while making their richly detailed fantasy world real to me in every sense: the settings, the history and lore, the food, the beings, the weather, the moods. So good.

Criticism: I'm not a fan of casting a grown-up voice actress for a child's role, and I find myself super annoyed every time Samantha Turret starts up her overly cutesy interpretation of Helen. I would have preferred an actual child for this role (though it's possible, depending on where the story will take us from here, that this choice was made for the protection of young voice actors, in which case I withdraw my objection). As far as the story itself goes: I don't get Dina's great affection for Maud, who is as immature and stuck-up as Dina is measured and kind. But, I don't have to love every character in a book, so that's alright.

... and otherwise I continue to be totally hooked on this entertaining storyline, its intriguing characters, and this prime ensemble performance. Gotta go, #4 is waiting for me :)
