[Mika] “Who is it you’re pointing your sword at?! They’re your family!” [Yu] “You’re my family too!” [Mika] “Of course I am. But I’m already dead.” [Yu] “I want to bring you back” [Mika] “You can’t have everything. The numbers are too different. Just me versus all of humanity…” [Yu] “I don’t care about humanity!”

Who’da thought I’d ever say it, but: Mika, stop being dumb and listen to Yu! You should know how important you are to him – you literally eat his desires now. Also, unlike the humanity in question, who are past suffering, you aren’t functionally dead! Yu didn’t care about vampire-you not having a heartbeat, remember?

And Yu – wow, you managed to fool two people this volume and one last time! Could it be you’re actually growing a brain? True, that trend might possibly have sinister implications, but the first two decisions I agree with, and the other…well, given what Ashuramaru was doing the last time you saw him^, I get the willingness to take that step! Still, is even smarter-Yu good enough to trick Shikama Doji (the First) if Mika isn’t on board with the plan?

^ If we can trust the translation (which I don’t entirely, given that the official translation renders all of Mika’s cutesy “Yu-chan”s as merely “Yu”), Ashuramaru DID finally refer to himself as a “brother”. But…it might be a moot point now!

Even if Yu doesn’t, for himself, care if Mika is a vampire or a demon, it still makes sense that turning him human again is such a high priority. All the immortal characters seem to agree that being immortal (as demon-Mika effectively is) is a torturous existence. In that respect, the story of Ashera saving Krul by asking the First to turn her into a vampire is very much a false parallel. I’m kind of curious how Mika’s demon-ness works, though, considering that he seems different from the other demons – But more on that in the spoiler section!

Spoiler discussion:
- The exchange between Yu and Mika in “demon space” where Mika is trying to persuade Yu to choose reviving humanity over him is a real tear-jerker. Their FACES! And then Yu’s calm as he makes his decision, and Mika’s panic as he consumes the desire and realizes what it is! Because of course Yu’s core desire is still “save Mika”; That’s the only thing Asuramaru could find in his heart when Mika was last in danger.

- Here’s where the nature of Mika as a demon becomes an interesting question. He says that Yu is swamped in “ugly desires” that he can’t eat. But…like what? Because Asuramaru and the other demons never had any problem feeding on revenge, anger, jealousy, etc. Is there something different about Mika intrinsically (due to being born an angel, or something like that)? Or is it just that he has all his memories intact and his desire not to hurt Yu means that he rejects desires that would be harmful to the person he loves?

- Mika reminds Yu of how they used to be so full of dreams about saving their family. “As long as I had my family…Well, no. As long as I had you, I thought I could do anything.” But his planned failed, and he doesn’t know if he can live with the guilt if they leave everyone else dead. But Mika – remember how you told Yu not to give up on life because of similar depressive, guilty feelings?

- Yu tries to consume Asuramaru’s power too, and the demon yells out to the First to tell him if letting Yu absorb them is part of the plan, part of his promise to save Krul. The First tells him he might as well, because: “Your usefulness is over.”
Cold, dang!

- Asuramaru accuses Yu of selfishly only wanting to save Mika, but he points out that the demon only cares about his sister. Yu claims that he can save Krul, save everyone.
[Ashera/Asuramaru]: “You…Both of you. From the start, you’ve only ever had eyes for Mikaela!”
Aaah! I mean, OBVIOUSLY. And this is a dark moment. But still…

- I do like that the squad apologizes to Yu for pushing him so hard. Because, duh! Anyone who knows Yu AT ALL would know that acting like choosing between two people he cares about, let alone, “Mika versus everyone who died since the apocalypse,” is no big deal and that he needs to make that choice NOW would likely trigger some kind of nervous breakdown!

- Yu uses that moment of apparent return to sanity to get Ashera close enough to devour him: “I was sane this whole time”
Which is dark, but the following scene is kinda funny:
(Mika reappears) [Yu] “Didja eat?” (silence) “Ah! You look pissed. Are you mad at me?” [Mika] “Yes, I’m mad. I’ve been mad the whole time. Didn’t you hear?” [Yu] “Yep! I did.” [Mika] “I am so going to kick your butt.” ?” [Yu] “Aha ha! Sorry.” [Mika] “So. You’re going to betray everyone and bring me back to life? Even though that’s not what I want?”
But Yu says that he’s going to do his own thing, not what Guren or Shikama Doji say, and asks Mika to help him. Mika somewhat doubtfully takes his hand.
Then Yu wakes up…and blasts off through the roof! Once again completely ignoring how much Shinoa’s pleading that she couldn’t bear to live without him sounds like how he and Mika talk. You have to feel a little bad for the girl…

***SPOILERS***
I really loved this volume <3

Chapter 115: Yuu: “I want to bring you back. I don’t care about humanity” Also Yuu: “I just can’t give up on you” and Then Mika: “My fault everyone died” My heart hurts so bad T.T He deserves all the happiness in the world.
We had a flashback in chapter 116 of Ashera and Krul’s past and how Krul was turned into a vampire.

Chapter 117 starts with another flashback but the story continues after that, and Please, let’s focus on what Asuramaru said: “you only want to save Mikaela” and “from the start, you’ve only ever had eyes for Mikaela” (I’m sorry I’m MikaYuu Fan haha)Great fight between Yuu and Asuramaru, I like how determined Yuu is about what he wants but also Asuramaru stands on his desires. And Mika why? T.T why are you trying to stop Yuu?

In chapter 118, finally, Yuu is the main character we wanted to see. When we thought Yuu was gonna lose to Asuramaru, Yuu says that he has been sane this whole time (Woow This came out of the blue) Now, he is making his own decisions. So sad, for Shinoa for being rejected in that way :c

I’m really excited to see what’s coming next in the story. And I will always pray for a happy ending for Mika & Yuu, please Kagami.

*Warning, there will be mild spoilers*

You know what? I'm going to call it good here.

This is a bittersweet moment for me. As someone who has been engaged with Seraph of the End since 2015, getting actively into it the following year, it's been another shonen series I've spent a considerable amount of time with. Characters have changed (and disappeared. Where Makoto went, I don't even know), allegiances have shifted, Kagami has built onto his world in dramatic and fascinating ways (both good and bad), and Yu and Mika's bond continues to get more homoerotic. A highlight of me moving for grad school was discovering they were caught up on where the series is in the States. It's been a great few months jumping back into Seraph and see how these morally gray people continue to do what they do best: Be morally gray.

Did I like this volume at the start? Yes. Did I still like it by the end? Debatable. Having more Asuramaru and Krul backstory was important given how it's been built up for the last ten or so volumes. The former's care for the latter is still evident, which makes what happens more conflicting. That, and Kagami still hasn't answered why the demons and Sika Madu are in cahoots directly. So that subplot kind of flew out the window.

The direction Kagami goes with in the end also feels like it abandons an aspect that has made the Moon Demon Company fun to travel with. They're a found family that reflects what Yu and Mika had when they were at the orphanage, even if that time there was just an illusion meant to keep this world moving as Shika wants it to. Mika and Yu positionality is very important as far as we're concerned. Think of it as being both for the lore and the queers. However, despite being belittled by his peers, it's clear Yu has meant a lot to them as the plot's progressed. He's kept their spirits up, taken on foes deemed impossible more times than I can count (blame the impulsive streak), and been a good friend. Ignoring Shinoa stating she can't go on living without him (which yikes), the scene where they're still shouting how much he's meant to them over his struggling body moved me more than several emotional scenes in the last few volumes. With the volume's ending, there's a new surge of independency to the ending that's eerily reminiscent of where we were in Volume 11/the end of the cours, but it doesn't feel as empowering. Based on my wording here, you can guess why.

It's that reason why I'm putting aside this series despite my past enjoyment of it and the emotional connection I had with the anime content. I'd only be continuing this for Yu and Mika, and that doesn't feel right considering how this franchise's scope has widened, along with my favorite characters. It's been a great seven and a half years with this world. There's always the anime to bounce back to and reflect on. In the meantime, it's time to return to other ongoing manga I'm following and start new franchises.

now I've already read all of these chapters before but I've just acquired the actual volume and ive gotta say, I totally think that yu's character has devolved over the course of this series (in a way that I find amusing instead of just an intense loss bc it's not like this series was ever incredible in the first place despite it being like one of my favs to the point my dog is named after one of these losers, but still) but constructing the plot in a way where yu has to choose between like the world and mika and then having him make a selfish choice and choose mika, becoming villian-like in the process, turning away from all of his friends, is actually great

That being said, I'M SO F-ING HAPPY FOR YU'S DECISION. Despite everyone saying he's just trapped in Shikama's plan, for me he's finally using his own brain, listening to his own heart and freeing himself from Guren's plans.
I'm sorry, Mika, you'll have to live with the survivor's guilt a little more because Yu just practically stated that your life worths more than everyone else's together.
That's the main character I was waiting for. And that's when he no longer can be pictured in the "hero" frame. Antihero Yu, I welcome you.

🎵DON'T BLAME ME, LOVE MADE ME CRAZY🎵

I had to put down my tablet and run around my room like y'all did that!!!

Faced with the choice of choosing humanity vs bringing Mika back to life, Yu goes fuckass berserk and chooses Mika.😭 Mika meanwhile doesn't even want that and wants to bring back the dead orphan kids.

Shaking and crying at the interaction between Mika and Yu in the demon space with Mika trying to convince him to not turn his sword against his family and just let him stay dead. Yu going calm and making his decision went so hard omg I was geeking. He knows what he wants and I respect that!! Between this volume and the last, it feels so wild to see Yu have somewhat of a brain, making calculated decisions.

Personally I feel like we didn't have to escalate it SO FAST like damn maybe we can have a conversation first?? But then I get Scarlet Witch vibes of already losing someone before and then willing to do what ever the fuck is necessary to not lose them again.😭 When Yu said he wasn't gonna give up on Mika.😭

"From the start, you've only had eyes for Mikaela."

Asuramaru read him the business with that line lmao. Calling Yu selfish about how he only cares about saving Mika like well... yes! We already saw into his greatest desires, how you gonna forget.💀 Which Yu read the business right back because Asuramaru only cares about saving Krul.

I feel kinda bad for Asuramaru I'm not gonna lie but then I remember how he betrayed and tormented baby demon Mika and I'm over it.

Shinoa girl I am so sorry.💀 From the beginning her being in love with Yu was sooo embarrassing and now she practically confesses and he really says ...anyway I'm out.✌️ Girl, I'd kms.

It's so funny how far we are into the story and the other characters STILL want to underestimate Yu's love for Mika, as if that isn't the driving force of the entire series.

HOLY SHIT.
I'm sorry for Asuramaru. I liked him and didn't want him to die. Yu's success here felt bittersweet. I'm sorry for Krul too, I wish she could see how hard her brother fought for her.
I'm also kind of sorry for Shinoa because the girl was clearly rejected. Ouch, I hear her heart shattering from here.
And I'm sorry for every single one of them who were expecting to resurrect their families and friends and for every vampire expecting to finally end their meaningless immortal lives in the process.

That being said, I'M SO F-ING HAPPY FOR YU'S DECISION. Despite everyone saying he's just trapped in Shikama's plan, for me he's finally using his own brain, listening to his own heart and freeing himself from Guren's plans.

Loved the fighting scenes. Loved how Yu managed to manipulate Asuramaru, proving he's not (SO) dumb. That was a genius move. Loved how every cell of Yu's body was urging to fight everyone to protect Mika and run away with him. Hated how Mika was ready to die for good. Loved how Yu couldn't let that happen.

This would've been a 4 but that ending reeks of extending for sake of drama so down to a 3.5 rounded down. Instead of getting the cool fight of Yu against everyone we get Yu vs Mika and then Ashera while focusing on Ashura and giving us Krul and Ashura's backstory. I love the focus on Ashera and Krul as their backstory is sad and purposefully mirrors Yu’s situation. It was sad to see how the First threw Ashura away and the bond of long since seen siblings stay so strong. Apparently this is still somehow part of The First's plan meaning he sorta knew Guren's plan even though I thought Guren's part of the plan was secret to him? Idk, I think the idea of Mika and Yu coming together and Yu trying to revive Mikaela was the actual part of his plan so Mikaela is like… a better host body or something.
The ending though is where the volumes leaves a bit of a sour taste. The fights were fun and impactful and Ashera's backstory was great to see especially how it mirrored Yu's situation. And Ashera does that thing where he doesn't care he's a demon and wants to help Yu instead to see everyone as his family not just Mika and try and help them as well. Then Yu gets the upper hand, has both demon power-ups, and fucking bolts from Guren and co after saying he isn't Guren or Shikama's plan. He doing his OWN plan. Which is probably just saving both Mika and everyone. But instead of explaining himself he just fucking leaves when explaining it probably could've had Guren and co agree with him and they could work together to look for that solution.

Okay okay so Yu is finally doing interesting, protagonist-ic things

But seriously, this volume ups the ante tenfold. So much morally grey stuff happening. I don't even know who to root for anymore. Yu is a raving idiot, but this poor kid goes through some traumatic shit. Guren made life-altering mistakes that literally led to the apocalypse, but he's not solely to blame. Meanwhile my poor baby Mika is just thrown in the fire over and over again

Also I want more of the ancient Greece backstory with Krul and Asuramaru. Maybe a spin-off manga or something?? There's so much potential there.

This actually took a big step to look at Yuu's motivations (be with Mika) and goals (safe Mika). We lost a character I liked a lot, and they just brushed over it super quickly, I hope that they will go back to that or that I just misunderstood something. This volume solely focused on Yuu's internal struggle with Mika, and Asha and Kurel's backstory. On the side, they talked about the angel's ideas and manipulation, but Yuu said that from now on he does not follow anyone and only does what he thinks is right. I am quite happy about that because the whole mentor/father figure Guren became annoying to me.

Maybe it's because I have to wait for the new chapter everymonth but I feel that the new chapters waste so much time.
Gosh I just want the story to get somewhere but I'm not even sure that it's close to ending and I keep forgetting what happened in previous chapters. Kinda painful.
I'm not even sure what I love about this manga so much, but no matter what I keep counting days for it every month.

This story is getting so crazy intense! Firstly what happens with Yuichiro and Mika is really emotional then Ashera's backstory was tragic. I am still so confused how Shikama Doji fits into all this though.
