As a pilot and a smuggler, Lenna has spent her life flying under the radar in Coalition space--taking care of herself, not relying on anyone. She's always liked it that way.

But now she's stranded without any resources on a stone-age planet, and the only way to survive is to hook up with a bunch of cavemen. She'll do whatever she needs to do in order to survive in their world--even if it means letting one of them take her as a mate.

She doesn't expect to like it. Or like him. Or lose her heart in the process.

In advance, I apologise for the seizure you're about to have...

Evidently, this book is good and evidently super cute, despite evidently having its flaws. Like for example, it was evidently annoying the amount of times the author evidently used the word "evidently".

Wow....you know when you say a word so many times, it actually becomes distorted and you forget how to pronounce it....that was me just now, googling "evilanantly" like it's a real word😭😭😭

That lil episode was a slightly exaggerated, if not accurate representation of what it felt like to read this book. Claire Kent really repeated the word about as many (40) times as the heroine had to remind us that "she is an independent woman". We understand home girl, you can rest now:)

And if you think 40 times is not a lot, this book has 9 chapters.

Besides that....

The most adorable caveman award goes to - Rone.🥺
description

He was still rubbing his rough jaw against the inside of one of her wrists. “Lenna Rone mate,” he murmured.

My fav part: When Rone's entire existence was blown away after the heroine showed him the magic of a blow job😭😭

It's always the modern-woman rocking her caveman-mate's world with tiny, simple gestures that calls to the 0.00000001% neanderthal in me. 🡸 I took a DNA ancestry test so I know I have em genes😍 my pride and joy. Explains a lot actually.

Shuddering with emotion, she grabbed his hand and held it to her heart. “Lenna home Rone.”
His face broke out into a smile that was breathtaking in its absolute purity. “Lenna home.”

PS: you actually can read this even if you didn't like Transcendence. I know I didn't. But I loved this.

Re-read because I was in the mood for a sweet little story. Still just as fun!

********
LOVED it!!!! Has a slight Transcendence feel to it with the "Kroo" cave people and the language barrier.

Lenna is a convicted smuggler and a bit of a badass. She's been dumped on a prison planet out in the middle of nowhere. Unbeknownst to her, there are other humans and critters on this planet. Enter Hairy Man aka Rone (he's only hairy because he doesn't have a woman to groom him)

I loved the world building, the characters and the overall story so much.
He might be a grouchy, uncivilized, smelly caveman, but he was her caveman.
This isn't a rapey, me-man-you-woman story. It's a sweet slow burn, learning-each-other story. The social and language miscommunications really made the story work.
"Rone home Lenna," he said slowly, carefully pronouncing each word. "Rone home Lenna."
My only complaint is that I wanted so much more story once they become a couple and Rone’s POV would have been nice.

While this is book three in a series, you can absolutely read each of them as standalone.

4 Now His Mate Stars ⭐

In a galaxy far far away Lenna has been planet dumped for crimes committed. Lovely to think about what the future generations have to look forward to. 😏 With no supplies, no weapons, no nothing she's luckily taken into the fold of a clan of cavemen.

Left to fend for herself and to find away to live amongst a primitive Kroo, Lenna captures the eye of Rone. However not only has her life been upturned, it is the woman's role to instigate their interest in the men. That's if you can decipher what they say and mean!

The man was dirty, smelly, covered with hair, and totally rude. She shouldn’t be attracted to him. At all. In any way.
But her body responded to his proximity, to the strength she could see in his arms, his shoulders, his chest. To the intelligence, the humanness she saw in his eyes.

Beside never wanting to be in this predicament, because I really need hair dye, a razor and deodorant, this was super sweet and really interesting. I mean I was so fascinated by the premise and romance that made the heart swell; it was so darn good!

Kristina like book. Book good. Kristina glad book. No home book but glad book.
This book was good and very sweet but I could never give up civilization to be with a caveman, no matter how muscular and nice he was.

4.5 out of 5

When I recently got a like for my review of this book, I remembered it - vaguely. When I read the outline and my review, I remember how much I enjoyed it and wanted to do a reread. So I did. And I do still - enjoy it that is. In fact I’m raising my rating to a 4.5 and rounding up to a 5.

This is the third book and I have and read the first book. Now I think it needs a reread to. And not only that, the 2nd and 4th book in the series are on KU. I’ve been focusing on reading the books I have on KU and had a couple of spaces open so I picked them up.

O happy dance day.

*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/

A couple of years ago I read a book, Transcendence by Shay Savage. This book rocked the foundation my reading world. It dealt with a young woman who was sent back in time and the hero was a caveman and they weren’t able to communicate.
So when I read the outline in a review of this book, about a young woman dropped among cave people and she was unable to communicate with them, I was SO onboard with it. It didn’t rock the foundation, but I still enjoyed this one very much anyway. This is the third book in a series but works just fine as a stand-alone. I haven’t read the first two and was never confused.

Just so you know, this is a sci/fi romance. Lenna, our heroine, is ‘planet dropped’ when she runs afoul of the “coalition’, the government in charge. This seems to be the way they handle transgressors, just drop them off on random planets with no way to escape. The planet they drop Lenna off on is a prehistoric planet. She is confronted with a group of cavemen like people who it is clear mean her no good. She is rescued by a second group of cavemen who seem more friendly, though they do ignore her for the most part. It seems they are bitter enemies of the first tribe. Lenna heads back with them, knowing she’s not able to take care of herself alone. There she discovers a younger guy who it seems will have his own book, who has been planet dropped himself. He explains how things work in this world. If she can get the attention and then the protection of a male member of the tribe, he will make sure she is taken care of and in turn she ‘grooms’ him – making sure he is shaved and clean and well, groomed. But it’s up to the woman to make her interest known to the man.

So Lenna decides to see if she can become the mate of a caveman named Rone. He was one of the ones who saved her from the other tribe, a good hunter and kinder than some of the others. She does get him and underneath all his caveman looks, discovers a very handsome and caring guy. After a while they manage to somewhat communicate on a very basic level and while it’s clear that Rone has feelings for her and she begins to reciprocate them.

This is such a sweet story. It’s not that long, more novella size, but the author manages to really convey what she needs to. Though we only see things from Lenna’s POV, it works very well and we clearly get Rone’s feelings even though not from his POV. I loved seeing how two people from such totally different ways of living manage to make a relationship work. I think Rone is more progressive than some of the other males on the planet and that helps. Towards the end, Lenna has a chance to escape and the conflict comes from whether she will or whether she won’t.

If you are a fan of Transcendence or if you like something very different and offbeat then I say give this one a try. I think you may enjoy it too

Bitch, what the fuck. Claire Kent is so good at this. How was this love story between a spaceship pilot feminist and a grunting caveman from a distant planet somehow both realistic and kind of romantic?

These motherfuckers were so REASONABLE. Understanding. Responsive, not reactive. Do cavemen have therapists I didn’t know about or something?

This was realistic and attractive in the most bizarre, interesting way. The culture and world building was interesting and our couple was sweet and sexy.

Opinion Breakdown
The Good: The premise and the characters.

The Not-So-Good: The POV. I would've loved to have some of the H's POV! I think it would've contributed so much!!

The Bad: I wanted more development and I think that could only come with more length.

Overall: This was enjoyable and the pacing was better than I expected for a short book. It did, however, feel underdeveloped in some aspects and I think that was because it was so short. I do like this author's voice and her world building as Last Light is one of my favorites, so I think I was also expecting a little too much here. But oh well ~ I still enjoyed it! Thanks Jess for the recommendation 🤗

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Lenna and Rone's story. Lenna is dropped on an island as punishment for smuggling. She meets up with a primitive tribe and Rone, who is one of their Alphas. Rone shows interest in her but his culture requires her to initiate anything between them. Culture and language barriers are in their way, but Lenna soon realizes that in order to survive she really should align herself with Rone and become his mate. There are some suspenseful scenes, some sexy times, and some sweet moments...and they get a HEA ending.

Point Of View (POV): This was told in 3rd person narrative focusing on Lenna's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Pretty good considering this was a short book for me @ 153 pages on my kindle app.

Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings.

H (Hero) rating: 3.5 stars. Rone. I liked him. I would've liked to know more about him, but the language barrier and not having his POV made that hard.

h (heroine) rating: 3.5 stars. Lenna. I liked her until she made her big choice, but then I just wanted to shake her!

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes, but mild

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ends in as close to a HEA as I guess we could have in this situation, but it's not as much closure as I usually require to call it that

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

I want to preface this review by stating that the above two-point-six stars is not a bad two-point-six stars. On the contrary, it's more of a I am extremely baffled two-point-six stars. Because truly, I am perplexed.

The basic premise of Fall is relatively simple. Lenna has been stranded on a primitive planet as punishment for smuggling. There she meets a group of primitive humans who call themselves the Kroo. Almost immediately Lenna connects with an espically hairy Kroo member by the name of Rone. One thing leads to another and you guys already know… they fuck fall in love.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗟𝗗 𝗕𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 | actually really worked for me. I thought the idea of being forced onto a primitive planet was actually a lot of fun. Well… not fun per-say, but you know what I mean. The concept was just really interesting.

🅾🅺 𝗟𝗘𝗘𝗡𝗔 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗘 | as our heroine. Like… she wasn't anything to write home about, but I liked her. That said, I was confused by her. For example, what made her fall in lust with Rone so fast? Why wasn't she more freaked out about being left on a primitive planet? Idk, I felt like her character was a touch inconsistent. If I'm being honest, I wanted to see her interacting more with the primitive planet and the Kroo as a whole.

𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗘 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗡𝗢𝗧 | work for me. I'm sorry, but he just didn't. I tried, I really did, but I don't know… I wanted more from him. I never felt like we really got to know him and he just seemed like he was there. I think having his POV would have really helped because as it stand all I know about him is that he a. loves Leena and b. came from a tribe far away.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗦 | insta-love to the max, which… *sigh* The insta-love here really did not work for me. For one thing, I really don't understand why (other than for plot reasons) Leena suddenly wanted to climb Rone like a tree. Please someone tell me why. Moreover, the communication between Rone and Leena was severely limited, thus I never felt like they got to know each other on a deeper level. They were on two completely different wavelengths for the entire runtime of the book.

𝗜 𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗡𝗢𝗧 | understand the ending of Fall whatsoever. I truly didn't. The fact that Leena was rescued from this primitive planet AND THEN DECIDES TO GO BACK?!?! I - wha?? Like… on a scale of one to ten how dick whispered was Leena? I'm gonna guess a firm nine and a half, because honestly! Also, it was LAUGHABLE when she tried to say that she missed the other members of the Kroo and not just Rone. Like - GIRL… you can lie to me all you want but please be honest with yourself.

I LOVED this book, I've been dragging on books because I have been so busy and because a lot of the books I read have just been ok, I've found myself rushing through books and even skimming. With this book I couldn't get enough, I didn't skim for one second, I never wanted this book to end, and I stayed up till I couldn't stay up any more to keep reading this book. This book was so amazing from the second I started reading I was hooked. The author does a fabulous job pulling you into this world and keeping you completely invested. I wish the book had been longer because I was loving it so much, and now i'm sad to see it end.

Because she was caught commenting a crime Lenna was dumped on a planet as he punishment. Not sure how she will survive but sure she will do everything she can to survive Lenna sets out to find food and finds the Kroo as well. The Kroo are an uncivilized group but when she offers them the berries she has found they agree to let her stay. The men are rough and edgy but one in particular though rough seems to make sure she is ok. This new world isn't as accepting as Lenna had hoped but she is safe and fed. When she learns that the woman are who initiate relationships and the only way to survive is to find a mate Lenna is shocked to learn Roan has been trying to get Lenna to pick him and show his interest.

Choosing Roan as a mate changes her life yet again and though life becomes easier Lenna can't believe how much everything soon changes and priorities change. Roan is like the other men is some ways but very different and Lenna is his. The longer Lenna stays the more Lenna questions everything she always wanted and when finally given a choice about her future there is only one Lenna can live with.

I loved this one. Roan seems rough around the edges and in ways he is but he loves Lenna so much, and he does everything he can to get Lenna and then make her happy. Lenna is smart and kind and perfect for Roan. I wished we could have had Roans point of view because loving this book so much I just wanted more but the author did a great job showing us what Roan was feeling and thinking and making us understand him. I couldn't have like this book more, and I'm sad its done but this book will definitely be a re-read in the future for me. And bond we get a great epilogue which just makes me happier.

Oh my gosh! How did I not know how amazing this book was and why did I wait until now to find out? Although this is sci-fi romance, it’s got a caveman/neanderthal hero that absolutely stole my heart in every way! With very little communication between Rone and Lenna, I would have thought it would be impossible to feel a connection but holy heck...this couple are the very definition of romance!

May be an image of 1 person

While Lenna is educated, sophisticated, and has more knowledge of the universe than Rone, she didn’t shun the people that accepted her into their tribe. She worked hard to fit in and in the process found herself content with the new life she found.

deer | ConsWorld

Rone was amazing! With very little language, he was more than capable of making himself understood. I loved that with a look it was easy to understand what he was expecting and hoping to receive from her, even if she was clueless. And is there anything sexier than a hero that grunts, frowns, and is protective as well as possessive in ways that means the safety of the heroine? Rone takes first place in that regard!

This is so different from the previous two books and I’m beginning to sense a pattern with this series: there is no pattern. I love that each one compliments the others but is unique and tells its own story.

Fall is Book 3 of the loosely interconnected Hold series, a genre mashup of dystopian and sci-fi, by Claire Kent. I've read Book 1 of the series, then skipped over to this one because of really glowing reviews by some trusted GR friends, and I'm happy to report this was mostly a success!

It's no secret that I'm a huge Claire Kent fan, particularly of her Kindled series, and I also read her work under her other writing name Noelle Adams. The Hold series as a whole is pretty gritty and dark, although Fall skirted away from some of the heavier content that say the first book had more of. I always appreciate a good "alien" romance where the language barrier is actually a barrier, and that was on point here with the main leads. Their romance, while overall a little insta-feeling due to the nature of the relationship itself and also the page count, didn't suffer so much in the development despite that. I love how problems and disconnect between the pair weren't written off, and we actively as the reader got to see them worked through and resolved.

Personally, I'm not sure I bought and/or believed how insistent most of the characters were that the MMC could NEVER POSSIBLY make do on Earth (whatever planet the FMC is from?) with high technology, and therefore the FMC had to go back to the alien planet to be with him. It's not the fact that they remained on the alien planet for his sake in the end, I'm fine with that resolution, but I just wanted more of a reason that the MMC couldn't possibly adapt than "it would NEVER work!", when the FMC adapted to his way of life on his planet!

Can't a girl have her dirty caveman-like "alien" lover AND plumbing?!

With vibes similar to Transcendence and Rowe, what's not to love?

This was a fast-paced novella that was thoroughly entertaining even if it was predictable. Compared to Transcendence, this book had non-stop talking lol!

I really appreciated how Lenna learned Rone's customs and culture as well as language, and didn't judge so harshly with her modern eye. I'm happy the author didn't have the FMC pick "The Gorgeous One" upon first meeting, even though he was the alpha and tribe leader. I always wanted a FMC to chill with the rest of the fun crowd, they don't need to be with the leader to have a fulfilling life.

Just like with most primitive romance books out there, there are triggers, so please be careful before reading. 💛

4 stars. A really enjoyable quick read. This is the second book I’ve ever read by this author, and I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I’ve liked both thus far. This series takes place in a dystopian future where humans have evolved enough to travel freely through outer space and inhabit different planets.

The heroine is dropped on a primitive planet as punishment for her crimes and is left there to die. She wanders for a few days but eventually finds a tribe of people who let her join them. They are very primitive... basically cavemen... and don’t speak the same language. This is where she meets the hero, and eventually begins a relationship with him.

I think the author did a really good job with the shorter length of this story. It would have been EXTREMELY annoying to read about day to day caveman chores. I can only read about skinning a dear so many times in my life, ya know? Anyways, this book ended up being the perfect length and had a very good epilogue as well!

Safe; there are some weird mating customs in the tribe where the women have to make the first move, hero is hit on by OW but isn’t interested

LOVED!! New Keeper! This book so captivated me that I am going to re-read the entire thing again today and I just finished it😂. If you love caveman/Neanderthal love stories and that world, omg, read this!!!

This is very similar to Transcendence. The differences are that this book doesn't drag, there is more dialog between the characters early on, no ones a virgin, you get to meet multiple cavemen/cavewomen, and the sex is way steamier!

Absolutely recommend it!

Safe
Book is a little shorter than a harlequin, but it’s completely enthralling and enchanting. You won’t regret this book!
I wish it was longer or had a part 2 for the same couple!😭

Claire Kent , if you ever read this, PLEASE, please consider writing more books with this world (caveman), there are literally no authors- none- who specialize in this genre, and you absolutely nailed it with this book~!

I’ve been reading a little too much contemporary lately and Fall was just the kind of deviation I needed—a short-but-sweet story that grabbed my attention with its interesting mix of futuristic and pre-historic themes.

Lenna was a strong, independent, space-faring smuggler who was sentenced to banishment on a random planet that, fortunately for her, already had human occupants. Unfortunately for her, they were cavemen (a situation that was satisfactorily explained later in the book).

I liked that it wasn’t insta-love; in fact, I wasn’t even sure who the MMC was going to be at first. When it did become apparent, the hero didn’t sound very appealing (sorry Rone, you know I home you!) and the FMC had realistic emotions around that. She struggled to fit in and adjust to caveman society and there were some misunderstandings along the way, but she was intelligent and adaptable. She made choices I wouldn’t have but they made sense for her character, in the context of the story.

It was great to see a language barrier that wasn’t handled by a convenient translating device/implant or one of the main characters somehow learning a whole other language in a ridiculously short amount of time.

As for the MMC, despite being a hairy, dirty caveman, Rone was lovely. He was caring and sometimes went beyond his cultural norms on behalf of Lenna, but not in a way that seemed over the top or unrealistic. Really, I didn’t expect this story to be so emotionally touching… by the end, my eyes were misting over.

I appreciate how the books in this series only tie together through their characters; they’re all very different in terms of settings and situations. While I enjoyed the first two, this was my hands-down favorite.

He is a caveman people. A real one!! If you enjoyed 'Transcendence' you will enjoy this one. They have a lot of similarities. The good thing here is that they use words other than 'beh', 'Ehd' and 'Luffs'... lol. If you're curious how cavemen fall in love, try them both.

I had big expectations for this book. I liked the setup… tough smuggler chick dropped on an alien planet with cave people… with smut!!

I LOVE tough h leads, and especially LOVE it when author’s write females that are kick ass without being prickly harpies… so bravo for that. I did like Lenna a lot, my only real grump was that at times her being clueless/stupid was used as a plot device that IMO didn’t mesh with her personality.

For example, at one-point Lenna is told how the Kroo society works specifically to courting and expectations of mates. Then, it’s GLARINGLY obvious what is going on and she acts like she’s never been given these insights. It makes her seem stupid, which she’s not. Actually, she’s an experienced smuggler/con woman whose survival instincts should’ve had her being proactive in securing her safety… not passively dodging the rape-y cave member like she has zero options. This dance goes on way too long (like 35%) and I was over it.

I loved Rone, he was such a sweety. He didn’t have the growly alpha man vibe going, but it still worked for me. If I ever found myself on a caveman planet, I’d want a Rone. 😊

I know not everyone loved it, but I liked how there was an “earther” already in the camp to fill in the language gap/ society staples. Some thought it was lazy world building, but I tend to get bored easily, and Desh certainly sped the plot along.

Bottom Line- For the first half Lenna bugged me a smidge because… She’d been assuming these people acted like the people she was used to.… which was confusing and got old, but she gets with the program and things picked up for me… but I’m impatient- keep that in mind. Regardless, I gobbled this down and recommend to anyone looking for a smutty-caveman-earth/modern woman romance. (all the planets are filled with "human aliens") It’s free to read with KU. There’s a cute epilogue several months later.

second read

idk why but this book makes me so emotional

~~~
first read
It wasn’t just a language barrier that was standing between them. They were from two completely different worlds. Even if she had the words to explain her point of view to him, he was never going to understand.
i always thought that i would miss things like the internet or coffee the most now i feel like i would DIE if i couldn't have decent conversations. this book made me depressed so unexpectedly, she was so alone and he didn't understand her but at the same time he was trying to understand her and my heart break for both of them 🥺😭
i mean i would never leave civilization for a man because i took 3 pain killers in a day for my period so yeah i don't think i would prefer caveman lifestyle but you go girl, it's your choice 👍🏼
THANK YOU JESS FOR MAKING ME CRY WITH THIS BOOK SO RANDOMLY 😡😒🔪
Fall was a sweet book about a smuggler Lenna who is stranded on a stone age planet. There she meets a cavemen and falls in love. I enjoyed their custom of the woman making the first move on who she wants as a mate and Rone was a wonderful mate for Lenna. There was a short appearance from Cain and Hall but overall it was too short for me to feel fully invested.
I picked up Fall because I was intrigued by the primitive society with culture differences and language barrier and it really packed a great, romantic story in a quick read. Lenna (h) is dumped on the planet as a punishment for smuggling and is trying to figure out survival when she comes across a cavemen-like tribe. Rone (H) is one of the stronger members of the tribe and also one of the few who acknowledges her (there are a lot of cultural differences). The story is told in third person but only focuses on Lenna's POV. There's a bit of drama with others in the tribe with an om who harasses h with unwanted advances and another om who's a friend to her but the tribe doesn't have that type of mixed gender friendship, ow make advances on H but he declines since he's all about h, h isn't a virgin and H's history is unknown, h has a birth control injection initially but bc isn't available otherwise.
What I enjoyed most about this story was the growth of both Lenna and Rone, how each adapts to being with someone not like them. I also loved that they end up choosing each other and I felt that they genuinely loved each other. There's a sweet epilogue with their HEA and while I would have loved an extra one further out, I was happy with where this ended.
This story was so sweet and cute! I definitely agree with other reviews that if you liked Transcendence by Shay Savage, then you will probably like this one!
The general gist of the story is that Lenna is a smuggler that gets thrown onto a prehistoric style planet with cavemen tribes, as part of her jail sentence. Lenna gets attacked by a neanderthal and gets rescued by our hero, Rone. Rone is a super hairy and unkempt caveman, whose eyes "show intelligence." The rest of Rone's tribe catches up, and after talking in some unknown language among each other, they start to leave. Lenna realizes her only chance of survival is sticking with this tribe. At first, she approaches the very handsome tribe leader, but he doesn't even give her a glance. She then turns to Rone, and Rone allows her to come along. Lenna tries to survive in the tribe, and finds out that most female "fringe" outcasts in the tribe must find a male mate in order to be accepted and survive well. Most of the story is about Lenna and her unknowing courtship with Rone.
The cute moments between Lenna and Rone gave me tooth decay - it was so so so sweet! Rone was very obviously smitten at first sight with Lenna. It was so adorable how he would always be watching her and looking hopefully for any signs Lenna was choosing him as her mate, like a puppy dog 🥺.
Also, it was funny reading Lenna's POV with how clueless she is about Rone and his hints about wanting to mate. One of the most thick-headed and clueless heroines I've read about in a long time 😂. At least she wasn't obnoxious and bratty about it, and admitted when she messed up and read him wrong! But damn, girl, she really was oblivious!
She’d definitely made the right choice in sleeping near Rone. At least he didn’t treat her like an object. He stood over his bed, staring at her for a long time, almost like he was waiting for something.
She had no idea what he might be waiting for, so eventually she just gave him a little smile and lowered herself onto the ground to sleep.
YES, GOOD THING HE SAVED YOU OUT OF RESPECT FOR WOMENKIND. No idea why he would possibly be looking from her to his bed, but it's probably not important. What a nice gentleman 🤡.
This silly idiot then "stares longingly at his bed" (because she's cold and wants blankets), sneaks into his cave to untangle his knotted clothing cord (because she wanted to do something nice for him), thinks he's just being a good pal when he approaches her at night to give her a blanket while looking back at his bed, sneaks in to clean his bedding for him and doesn't understand why he's staring expectantly at her and the bed... poor Rone 🤣🤣.
My heart melted when the other prisoner who was in the tribe, Desh, told Lenna that in all his three years here, he never saw a man give roasted meat to a female that wasn't mated to him. And here our puppy dog Rone was giving Lenna meat, stew, bread, a blanket... all while basically patting his empty bed 🥺. At least Lenna showed him the magic of blowjobs and the cowgirl position 💅.
The ending was cute, and I'm glad that Lenna didn't choose to leave Rone, and came back to be with him. I think the author could've stressed more that Lenna had no one she cared about outside, and only stayed for Rone. It was weird the way the story threw in that Lenna missed the other people in the tribe, when they were mostly all assholes to her except Desh (who left) and Rone. I also wish they showed Lenna secretly leaving the planet every now and then to get supplies or tech that would make her life easier. She is a smuggler, after all!
A few things that didn't really make a lot of sense to me, but that I was willing to overlook because this story was cute af:
* First, why was the leader of the tribe, Tamen, so disgusted with Lenna?? Lenna was clean, probably smelled way better than anyone in the tribe, and was known for being a beauty (even among non-cavemen). I was so confused how he kept being like:
And the heroine was like, "Oh, I didn't want him anyways if he's a player who switches out women! When he approaches me in the future, I will reject him."
And I'm just here like, "bitch he didn't want you, whatchu talking about rejecting him in the future 🤣 "
It just makes the heroine seem so undesirable, which was kind of a bummer! I still don't get what was up with that.
* Second, I did not really understand the culture of the Kroo tribe. Like, they have this very modern approach when it comes to dating / choosing mates. The women have the freedom to choose whichever mate they want, and the men have to stay back and let the women pursue first. Once both sides give consent, they become mates and are monogamous. If the men want to leave the women, they can "divorce," but have to give alimony food and items to their ex wives. That's all quite advanced for a caveman society... but then, why were they just not giving a shit when the sleazy rapist tribe member kept groping and trying to rape Lenna? Even after they accepted her into the tribe? They are said to "look down on his behavior" and he's considered "weak," but no one did anything to stop it except Rone, and Rone had a vested interest in doing that. You'd think after the fourth time trying it, they would've just kicked him out.
* Third, why would it be a surviving trait in the Kroo tribe for the unmated males to not self groom, and only get grooming when they have a mate to do it for them? That just seems like such a counter-productive trait to get a female. Most animals try their hardest to show off and look good to potential mates.
* Fourth, while Lenna's character was sweet, I didn't really understand her. She was really into being a feminist badass, and she was fine with eating meat, but she didn't want to go and hunt and shoot prey for food. But she also wanted to just learn how to hunt without actually hunting? It just seemed like a strange and out of place contrast to her being a badass smuggler who isn't even vegetarian and is trying to survive on a caveman planet.
All in all though, it was a fun read! Apparently Desh gets his own book as the hero, but he seemed like such a beta kid (with best friend vibes), I seriously can't imagine him as a sexy romance hero.
Safety:
* Heroine NOT a virgin, has had casual relationships.
* Hero is implied to be a virgin, since he was unmated and always rejected other females until the heroine.
* No real OM drama. The heroine is initially attracted to the leader of the tribe, but he doesn't like her. She moves on from being interested in him pretty quickly. The heroine is lonely and hangs out with Desh (only person who speaks her language), and the hero gets very jealous and possessive. Eventually he realizes the guy isn't a threat.
* No real OW drama. The tribe leader's eldest daughter keeps pursuing and trying to get the hero to take her as a mate, but the hero only has eyes for the heroine. There is a misunderstanding where the hero let's this OW touch his hair, and he does nothing, so heroine thinks he moved on. It turns out that his mate is supposed to assert herself when that happens 👀.
* No condoms (caveman setting duh), heroine on birth control a few months, but eventually gets pregnant.
* HEA with baby
Fall is the 3rd book in Claire Kent’s Hold series and I’ve been having so much fun with this series. I first read Claire Kent last year and fell in love with her post-apocalyptic romance series Kindled. And now this Hold series has me in a bit of a chokehold as well, this is a sci-fi romance series that takes place in space in the future, basically each book in the series has been on a different planet and each is vastly different (ex: a prison planet, a royal planet, and now a prehistoric/cavemen planet). This book especially you could for sure read as a stand-alone, you get a glimpse of the characters of the previous book in this one but not in any way where you’ll feel lost or need their story to understand the concept of this book.
Ok so the way I am obsessed with this book so much!!! 😍 A prehistoric/stone-age, caveman-filled planet! This book was an absolute delight and made my day (well night cause I binged it last night 🤣)! This gave me a similar vibe to other books I love, Ice Planet Barbarians series and Transcendence, and I was here for it. My rating was definitely inflated because I had such a good time with this and had quite a few blah reads lately, so this one just hit perfectly for me at the right time.
Lenna has spent her entire life flying under the radar in Coalition space but now she’s “planet dropped” (how the Coalition handles transgressors is to drop them at random planets with no way off) and stranded without any resources on a prehistoric, stone-age planet! And with dangerous animals around, Lenna realizes the only way to survive is to hookup with a crew of cavemen/cave-people who seem to inhabit the planet. Lenna is willing to do whatever it takes to survive, even if it means letting one of the cavemen think she’s his mate. Rone is the ultimate sweet, caveman hero and the way he adores Lenna was everything! I loved seeing them learn to communicate and how to understand one another. Ugh this was just the sweetest thing and I had the best time with it!
Fall is the third standalone novella in Claire Kent’s erotic sci-fi series Hold. All the stories to date take place on a series of planets described as being part of Coalition space, the Coalition being a strict ruling party that controls this part of the galaxy. The first story (also entitled Hold) is a dark and gritty introduction to a reality where political prisoners and murderers alike are kept on a prison planet, thought to be impossible to escape. However with years of planning, hero Cain and his new cell mate and love interest Riana find a way off the planet with the help of Hall, a fellow inmate who has certain psychic powers. In the second story, Release, Hall finds himself on an independent planet ruled by a Royal dynasty. The Coalition is determined to take control of the wayward planet. Hall enlists the help of a smuggler friend – Lenna – to get him and his new partner Princess Kyla off the planet before all hell breaks loose. Lenna is successful, but the fallout from her actions catches up to her in Fall.
Lenna’s story starts with her having been dumped by the Coalition on a stone age planet, a lifetime prison sentence in a place that is essentially like having traveled back through time to a prehistoric existence. Small bands of human hunter gatherers exist, primitive societies reminiscent of early Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon peoples. Lenna must fight for survival against the elements and aligning with a tribe is her best chance. Even better would be catching the attention of a prominent alpha male and becoming his mate. But can a woman from the future and a man from the past really form a meaningful and long lasting relationship? Or is Lenna better off trying anything to get back home?
What an interesting and provocative story! Each title has been entirely different in scope and scenario. While Hold has a high place on my shelf of favorite erotic romances, this story while definitely containing some erotic scenes, delves into deeper themes. It makes one question what one is are willing to give up in the name of love. Lenna’s introduction to her new home planet is harsh and violent. She barely survives an attack by the local wildlife when she encounters the first of the hairy, dirty, unkempt stereotypical Neanderthal type males, a man who tries to kill her. But another male from a different tribe who looks and acts similarly interrupts her almost death and deals his own blow to her would be assailant. Just as Lenna is wrapping her mind around what she’s seeing, a male that looks decidedly more like her is there. He’s clean, he’s well groomed, he’s handsome, and immediately the reader’s mind thinks, ‘Aha! Here is the hero! The one who’s going to save her!’. But that’s not what happens.
The men who come to her aid (some clearly better groomed than others) abruptly begin to depart. In desperation and with no ability to communicate in their primitive language, she offers them some of the berries she’s collected. They accept, hand her a sack made of animal skins and gesture that she should collect more and follow them. From there, Lenna becomes a part of the tribe, though as an unmated female she is relegated to the role assigned to widows and orphans, the ones on the outer circle of the fire. As luck would have it, she finds an ally, a man named Desh from her own world who was dropped on the planet as a teenager a few years earlier for his political crimes. Desh has a limited role in the tribe because he has not completed his first solo hunt but he understands the hierarchy of its members, their customs, and their language. A key custom is that when a man takes a mate, she is responsible for his personal grooming – so the men who have their hair combed and braided, whose bodies and clothes are clean (in short, the ones who look more human and less animal to Lenna) are taken. He tells Lenna that if she wants to get a favored position, she’ll need to become a mate to one of the leaders. Rone, the Neanderthal looking man who defended her clearly is a strong hunter and has a favorable position in the tribe. And he’s unmated.
Lenna and Rone are more than just opposites – they are worlds apart. But at heart they are still just a man and a woman. Lenna watches how the other women act and learns to imitate them, eventually sharing Rone’s bed. To her surprise, after expecting a rough and quick sexual experience that she’d grimace and get through, she finds herself attracted to Rone’s strength and the intelligence in his eyes. They might not be able to speak to each other, but he’s clearly attracted to her and she finds herself getting comfort in his arms. Gradually their connection intensifies as she learns the rudiments of his language, and their sexual experiences become more mutually fulfilling. It’s not the life she’d ever imagined having, but she is adjusting and can admit to herself that she is falling in love with Rone. But the second half of the story takes on some surprising twists, ones that make Lenna question where she’s come from and what she wants for her future. There are some quite emotional and heart tugging moments, decisions made and regretted, forgiveness sought and granted. Lenna and Rone deserve their happy ending. Interestingly, Desh, Lenna’s young tribe mate is set to get his own story, which – based on the three novellas in the series to date – is bound to take the series in another new direction. Fall might be an erotic caveman-type romance on the surface but it has a lot of emotional depth and a surprising insight into what makes the human heart tick.
I enjoyed this, but wish there had been more interaction between them. More relationship growth, even learning more of her language sooner. I also wish we'd had Rone's POV! I loved him and didn't get enough of him! Overall, it was still a good read.
