Does family game night not come frequently enough for you?? 🧩
This book contains 100 mysteries which can be solved using LOGIC, SKILL and the power of DEDUCTION, by G.T. Garber, the creator of the popular online daily mystery game called MURDLE.
STUDY the list of suspects, weapons and locations and read the clues carefully…then determine whodunnit with what weapon and where…(like in the board game!)
You can solve these on your own or join the Detective Club at Murdle.com to solve these with others!
They start out at the ELEMENTARY level, and gradually get harder, (Impossible??) and the first mystery is broken down for you, using a grid, so that you understand how to go about solving the others.
What a great stocking stuffer for the amateur detectives in your family!🕵🏼♂️🕵️♀️🕵🏾 🎅🤶🏻🧑🏻🎄
I know that this book will be keeping me busy for quite awhile, as it is one to savor and not rush through! It sounds like FUN, and I am looking forward to sharpening my skills!!
I definitely recommend a PHYSICAL COPY of this one.
I didn't know about Murdle until I saw friends' reviews and really want to give it a try. I love word games and puzzles and the idea of cracking a case is a bonus for a mystery fan like myself.
Using logic and deduction to solve the mysteries, SUSPECTS, WEAPONS, and LOCATIONS are provided and also a grid notepad. Two characters Deductive Logico and Inspector Irratino will guide you through the process. Some clues are in codes and need to be decoded. It's very clever how information is presented. There are 100 scenarios ranging from "Elementary" to "Impossible" difficulty. What a fun and exciting concept!
I also found an online edition (https://murdle.com/) that is easier to play than on a tablet. Through my PC I can use a notepad on the same page without swiping back and forth. I'm happy to see that this is out as a paperback and probably the best way to play! This will make an awesome gift, getting this for a friend who will be traveling.
For Netgalley reviewers if you're stuck.
Thank you St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for my DRC.
For those armchair detectives, Murdle is an absolute must have. It’s a book that would make a great gift for Christmas or birthdays. I am definitely pre-ordering the book for myself as well as ordering both Volume I and Volume II (releases September 2023,) for my sister and brother-in-law as gifts for Christmas.
There are 100 different puzzles ranging from elementary to impossible. Though I did find that the elementary puzzles were still a bit challenging.
Rather than just offering a list of clues, the reader is also provided a method to solve the mysteries — a grid. Using the grid, the solver is able to eliminate or add suspects, weapons, and locations to logically resolve the puzzles. Additional hints as well as the solutions are provided in the back of the book.
The ebook format wasn’t the best for reading Murdle. Only because the layout isn’t conducive for using the grid and referencing the clues. I’m sure that the physical copy will resolve that issue.
Fans of the boardgame Clue will just love this book. I certainly did. Five outstanding stars.
I received a digital ARC from St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for gifting me an early copy of this book. Below is my honest review.
I love logic puzzles, and this book was a lot of fun. The mysteries are quick and somewhat challenging. My only gripe is that it's difficult to read this one in the ebook format. The solutions are at the end (without links set up to jump around), and they're one right after the other, so you can easily see the solution to the next one on accident.
Otherwise, it's a fun book full of great mini-mystery logic puzzles, just like the Murdle daily puzzle website.
I've been playing this game online every day and really enjoy the fun logic puzzles. I love that each logic puzzle is actually a mini murder mystery to solve and includes humor in the crime's backstory and in the clues and evidence. I found that the puzzles don't really work well in the ebook format. I was so excited to see a book was coming out with Murdle puzzles. I received an e-book version and not everything was displayed as clearly as I'm sure it will be in the print version.
The book consists of 100 mystery puzzles of varying levels of difficulty- 25 Elementary, 25 Medium, 25 Hard boiled, and 25 "impossible". As in the online version, there is one hint for each mystery which is included at the back of the book. The hints are followed by the solution with the identity of the murderer, the weapon, the location and the motive when applicable for each puzzle. I enjoy solving these unique logic puzzles and look forward to when the print version of the book is released which will be easier to work with than the electronic version.
I received an advance copy of this ebook at no cost from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.
Murdle: Volume 1 by G.T. Karber is touted as 100 Elementary to Impossible Mysteries to Solve Using Logic, Skill, and the Power of Deduction.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher St. Martin’s Press and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Synopsis and Opinions: Basically, the book is a collection of logic puzzles, all dealing with mysteries/crimes.
With each case, you "join" Deductive Logico to investigate the crime and find out the the crime, perpetrator, location, etc...
Well, first....I will be buying a hard-copy of this book, because I LOVE logic problems.
That leads me to my first problem with this book. You cannot work on these puzzles with an e-reader. I did a few of them, but used my computer to read the puzzles, and had a pad of paper and a pen beside me to solve them.
Note that there are 4 sections to the book, with different degrees of difficulty ranging from "Elementary" to "Impossible". Then there is a Hint section for each puzzle, and then finally a section with the Solutions. These last two sections, of course, don't work too easily on an e-reader.
However, there are a lot of illustrations, charts, and maps, and interesting puzzles....so I will recommend this book (hard-copy only), and I will check out the puzzles one-line!

Twenty-five whodunnits that kids — and their grownups — can attempt to solve. You’ll need scratch paper and a pencil. These aren’t Encyclopedia Brown-level mysteries; they’re pretty hard. Even so they’re really fun, and I’m super excited that the title says “Volume 1,” meaning there will be more! Great for exercising your brain!
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and St. Martin’s Griffin in exchange for an honest review.
I freaking love Murdle and this encapsulates all of the daily puzzle fun in book form. They also add some elements of story to the mix with Detective Logico's past. Plus the time trial for the Elementary section? BANANAS! I definitely want a physical copy so I can try out a speed-run and the "all in the mind" challenge. They also add fun elements like the Astrological Primer, decoder ring, and even an over-arching mystery. Plus hints and quick solutions in the back, where you have to actually seek them out. Looooooove.
*Thank you to St Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review*
I received this on Friday and have spent the last 5 days or so working through the puzzles. I’ve finished a little over half so far. They do get progressively harder but are not impossible. There is a little bit of a storyline and you get some more of the story after checking the answer. I chose to work on the puzzles in batches only checking the answers after 6 or so puzzles so that I didn’t accidentally see the answer for the next Murdle. Because of this, I didn’t really follow the storyline but I don’t feel like it diminished my experience at all! Can’t wait for volumes 2 & 3!
This was a whole lotta fun—for the most part. Each of the 100 puzzles helps the main character, Deductive Logico, solve a mystery, almost always a murder. The narrative around these puzzles builds a much larger story that is really cleverly done. I enjoyed getting to play detective!
The puzzles are divided into four difficulty levels, from elementary to impossible, and several of the last sort did seem truly impossible to me. My favorite was the third-hardest difficulty level. Oh, and watch out, puzzle 61 *does* have an error. (The errata can be found on the Murdle website.)
I was super impressed by how the recurring characters seemed to work as a cast to make this more than just a book of puzzles. And there is quite a bit of humor!
My biggest complaint is that some of the icons and descriptions—especially of the weapons—seem pretty inconsistent. In one point, a straw is labeled “heavy weight” and then later (correctly) labeled “light weight.” The icon for the dowsing rod changes after its first appearance. Sometimes the brick is “made of clay,” while other times it’s “made of brick.” Lol. I do think a lot of these descriptions are meant to be comical and ironic, but my attention to detail was getting overwhelmed by these little inconsistencies.
Two more volumes are set to come out in the next six months or so, and I do think I’ll try my hand at Murdle again!
Note: I do prefer the book version to the website! I think it’s much easier to review the suspect, location, and weapon information.
I’m a huge fan of puzzles, but was not familiar with Murdle until this book. It was easy to figure out how to play though and I found the mysteries to be challenging and fun. I’m definitely a Murdle fan now!
The only issue I had was with the ebook formatting. It made it difficult to navigate, reference clues, and the pictures didn’t show up. I imagine this won’t be an issue for print copies though.
*I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book*
I'm glad I get to see this book early, but the netgalley formatting left quite many things out, like graphics, pictures etc to make it easier and more fun to solve. Still can't wait for my copy to show so I can spend some time solving these puzzles.
I have absolutely adored Murdle since the website's early days, and I absolutely love having it in book form!! I really like that the puzzles increase in difficulty throughout the book! Murdle: Volume 1 is an absolute winner in my logic puzzle loving heart, and I look forward to Volumes 2 and 3!
A fun twist to murder mysteries and puzzles! I had not heard of Murdle prior to this book, but it’s the new wordle and I can’t wait complete daily! Looking forward to the hard cover of this puzzle book.
Thank you, Netgalley and St. Martin's Press, for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Murdle: Volume 1 by G. T. Karber contains 100 tricky mystery puzzles that are perfect for the Nancy Drew wannabes, students of Sherlock Holmes, deductionists, puzzle fans & crime & mystery aficionados. If you mix a cross logic puzzle with a mystery novel & a solo game of Clue, then you get Murdle! It’s an interesting whodunnit puzzle game that is sure to keep you entertained.
I love nonograms & have done them for years & these challenged me! I was working with an e-book copy & I think it would’ve been easier to do with a physical copy, but still so much fun! This a great book for entertainment that is sure to give your brain a workout!
I love the increased difficulty along with the increase of clues & need for deduction with the potential of suspects’ lies as the book went along. There was also a hints section before the answer key in case one ever gets stuck on one.
If anyone is looking for a gift for mystery lovers, puzzle enthusiasts &/or amateur detectives, Murdle: Volume 1 is a great recommendation!
Massive thanks to NetGalley & St. Martin’s Griffin for the free arc, which I voluntarily read & reviewed.
Love the idea of Murdle (this is #1) in book format! Not only is this an ongoing emerging mystery story but also deduction puzzles (elementary, medium and hard boiled) to solve with clues such as people descriptions (right-handed, hazel eyes), locations (ancient ruins) and objects (decoder ring, piano wire). The author recommends using a grid and pencil for jotting down observations, following along with Detective Logico.
I am besotted with this new-found interest which prompted me to visit the Murdle website. The premise of the book is fantastic and it oozes wit and Clue/Agatha Christie vibes.
Though I worked through the first few puzzles on paper (with the help of hints in the back), it was challenging as the clue pictures/illustrations did not appear on Kindle format. I am dying (!) to complete the remainder in the physical version.
My sincere thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing me with an early digital copy of this engrossing puzzle book!
Murdle is a logic grid puzzle book where you’re playing as “Deductive Logico” solving murders via the puzzles. This one is made up of suspect, location, weapon and motive to go with the murder mystery theme and in the end you have to declare who did it, where, how and why! Almost like a fun combination of Clue (or Cluedo) and logic puzzles.
The book is made up of puzzles from their website, where, like Wordle, there is a daily puzzle to solve. The interactivity of the website adds a cool layer to the whole thing as well. If you’re not sure how it all works, you can check out their website which will make you wanna try more of their puzzles.
What’s unique about Murdle is that they take the classic logic grid puzzle but also add another layer. For example, you might need to figure out who’s lying or solve a cipher to fully solve a puzzle. There’s also further details about each of the suspects/locations/weapons that you’ll have to check against as you’re going through the clues.
I also really appreciate that there are hints provided in the back of the book since that means that you don’t have to spoil the whole answer if you’re stuck on a puzzle.
I liked the level of difficulty this set of puzzles provided; the difficulty increases in each section. Even though I’m super familiar with puzzles of this kind, and puzzles in general, there were some that stumped me or ones that I solved wrong.
One advice I have though is to get this book in physical format since you’re gonna wanna flip the pages back and forth and really write and erase things.
Overall a very fun way to pass the time and a good twist on logic grid puzzles!
Thank you to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for the eARC!
Puzzles mixed with a dose of mystery makes Murdle: Volume 1 a definite winner! I enjoyed attempting to solve each puzzle—from the fairly easy ones to the most challenging. I think I would've preferred to complete the puzzles in the actual book, but I made do with using a separate notebook.
I would like to thank NetGalley and St. Martin's Press with providing me an early copy of this book. Murdle: Volume 1 by G.T. Karber is a MUST read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ELITE!!!
I love logic puzzles, I have for years. So when I discovered Murdle I was absolutely thrilled!
What's unique about Murdle that I enjoy is the actual cards. In typical logic puzzles there are straightforward clues and the chart, however Murdle is a bit more complex. Each card has details about the character, weapon, location, or motive, and those details are interwoven in the clues. This makes it a bit more of a fun and interactive challenge which I really enjoy.
I do my Murdle daily, and when I found out there was going to be a book I pre-ordered immediately. I'm trying to resist doing too many of the puzzles in this e-galley so I can enjoy all of the fun in June when it arrives, but it is not easy holding back!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review. Excited for June!
This book is so much fun! As a kid who always loved logic puzzles this is right up my alley. This book has a hundred mysteries for you to solve and they get progressively harder as you go. There are hints towards the back and at the very back are the answers. While good on kindle this is definitely a book I would prefer a physical copy of, and have a notebook nearby to be able to reason through my thoughts to solve the mysteries. If you like puzzles, especially logic puzzles, this is a fantastic book for you!
I like the creative way this book is put together, a twist on the standard logic puzzle. The way it lays out the different suspects, locations, etc. with information you can pull into the puzzle makes for an interesting approach and a little more detective work on the part of the reader. The early puzzles in the book have been on the easy end, but there are also extra hints for each puzzle at the back of the book.
I love logic puzzles and Murdle has over 100 elementary to impossible mysteries to solve using your logic, skill and the power of deduction. The author also has online puzzles for you to solve.
I didn't complete the book obviously 🤣 I'm not that fast, but I've been having fun solving these on my down time. If you also enjoy these types of puzzles, check it out ❤️
"While solving each case proves compulsive, following the stories behind the crimes is equally compelling. The combination of perplexing puzzles, witty descriptions and entertaining characters renders Murdle addictive and makes it near impossible to attempt just one puzzle. With unlikely scenarios, logic-defying outcomes and suspects who routinely and expertly lie, it’s a proper brain-buster of a book."
Okay I originally got this book as an eBook, and it was quite hard to follow the clues. So, I ordered the paperback, and I am so glad I did. It changed everything! This is not the book to get as an eBook. Once I got the paperback and dove into the puzzles though I was hooked, you will have to do a lot of flipping back and forth between the pages, but if you like puzzles or games like clue, this will be a hit for you.
** “The murderer will always lie, and the other suspects will always tell the truth.” **
As its subtitle (“100 Elementary to Impossible Mysteries to Solve Using Logic, Skill, and the Power of Deduction”) indicates, “Murdle: Volume 1” by G.T. Karber involves increasingly difficult mysteries to solve, starting with fairly easy and gradually ending with much more challenging puzzles.
“Murdle” follows mysteries solved by Deductive Logico, allowing the reader to also solve each of his short mysteries. With titles like “Eat, Drink, and Be Merry, for a Jerk Just Died,” “The Body in the Moonlit Ruins” and “UFO, What’d You Know?,” the stories create a storyline following Deductive Logico’s career.
The mysteries also include intriguing characters — like Dame Obsidian (“a mystery write whose books have sold more copies than the Bible and Shakespeare combined”), Captain Slate (“a real-life astronaut. The first woman to travel around the dark side of the moon, and also the first to be suspected of murdering her copilot”) and Chef Aubergine (“It is said that she once killed her husband, cooked him, and then served him at her restaurant. It’s not true, but just the fact that it’s said about her tells you something”) — and fascinating locations, like the Investigation Institute (“a recently founded organization that investigates spiritualism and other related phenomena”) and a Potentially Haunted Mansion (“people keep seeing ghosts here, especially around the furnace in the basement”). They also include intriguing weapons, like a cauldron, a ghost detector and a skeleton arm.
Utilizing logic puzzle charts to solve, I would not recommend reading this book in e-reader form, as you need to mark the puzzle charts to solve each short mystery. As the difficulty increases, the puzzles add more characters, locations and weapons, as well as motives, to make the puzzles harder to solve.
To assist readers in their quest, the book ends with hints for all 100 mysteries, as well as the solutions.
Fans of mysteries, characters like Sherlock Holmes, authors like Agatha Christie, and logic puzzles will love “Murdle: Volume 1,” which is due out June 13.
Five stars out of five.
St. Martin’s Griffin provided this complimentary copy through NetGalley for my honest, unbiased review.
